title Design across multi-scale datasets by developing a novel approach to 3DGANs

summary The development of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) has accelerated the research of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in architecture as a generative tool. However, since their initial invention, many versions have been developed that only focus on 2D image datasets for training and images as output. The current state of 3DGAN research has yielded promising results. However, these contributions focus primarily on building mass, extrusion of 2D plans, or the overall shape of objects. In comparison, our newly developed 3DGAN approach, using fully spatial building datasets, demonstrates that unprecedented interconnections across different scales are possible resulting in unconventional spatial configurations. Unlike a traditional design process, based on analyzing only a few precedents (typology) according to the task, by collaborating with the machine we can draw on a significantly wider variety of buildings across multiple typologies. In addition, the dataset was extended beyond the scale of complete buildings and involved building components that define space. Thus, our results achieve a high spatial diversity. A detailed analysis of the results also revealed new hybrid architectural elements illustrating that the machine continued the interconnections of scale since elements were not explicitly part of the dataset, becoming a true design collaborator.

summary As chimeras of the city and its entangled natural environments are distributed across the planet, Convoluted City opens up a space where new notions of the built environment can begin to emerge. True- and false-color remote sensing images were curated and processed with neural networks, and we demonstrated that by converting generative adversarial network (GAN)-generated images into dithered material deposition descriptions, two-dimensional image data can be converted into physical, materially heterogeneous objects (Figures 1 and 2). The models were exhibited at the Resilienze Festival in Bologna, Italy, in June 2023.

summary During the 1980's, ABACUS, a research unit at the University of Strathclyde developed an interest in the ability to model and manipulate large geometrical databases of urban topography. Initially, this interest lay solely in the ability to source, capture and store the relevant data. However, once constructed, these models proved genuinely useful to a wide range of users and there was soon a demand for more functionality relating to the manipulation not just of the graphics, but also the range of urban attributes. Although a number of improvements were implemented there were drawbacks to the wide adoption of the software produced. The problems were almost all due to deficiencies in the then current hardware and software system available to the professions, and although this strand of research continued to be pursued, most of the development had to be focused on research applications and deployment. However, the recent advent of the Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) standards have rekindled interest in this field since this language enables many of the issues that have proved problematic in the past to be addressed and solved. The potential now exists to provide wide access to large scale urban models. This paper focuses on the application of VRML as applied to the 'Glasgow Model'.

The metaphor used by these sites varies enormously from virtual galleries to virtual cities and style varies from abstract to reality. Additionally these worlds are populated by virtual objects, some having reactive or interactive properties, including movement, audio, video, databases, artificial intelligence etc. Perhaps the most stimulating embodiment of these new environments are those that offer the participant the opportunity to meet and communicate with other visitors exploring the same virtual space/world. The Glasgow Directory is an established 3D web space, with around 10,000 visitors per year. The model represents approximayely 10,000 properties in the city and is populated by contextual information on its culture and socio-economic topography. This paper will describe the background to this VR space, and suggest a set of design criteria for successfully deploying multi-user software within this and similar environments. These criteria will take into account lessons learned by 'observing' and analysing how participants interact with the existing system under different conditions and also what benefits they perceive on entering the environment via the multi-user interface. summary The purpose of this research is to consider the behaviour of workers from the viewpoint of territory. We hypothesized that “objects on the desk show territory” from our past research. First, we developed the PWAS. This system creates a territory analytical figure from interval photography pictures. And then, experiments were carried out to consider the behaviour of workers in three different conditions. We especially focused on personal workspace, one of territory, because it is very important in considering the behaviour of workers. From this research, we obtained several suggestions regarding the determinant of personal workspace in the office and the influence which physical environment has on personal workspace. From the above, this research shows that territory is very important to understand the behaviour of workers. In addition, it is meaningful that the appraisal techniques using the PWAS obtains these result to some extent.

summary This study focuses on generating geometric design alternatives for an airport roof structure with an evolutionary design method based on optimizing solar heat gain and daylight levels. The method incorporates a parametric 3D model of the building, a multi objective genetic algorithm that was linked with the model to iteratively test for various geometric solutions, a custom module that was developed to simulate solar conditions, and external energy simulation environments that was used to validate the outcomes. The integral outcome was achieved through an iterative workflow of many software tools, and the study is significant in dealing with several space typologies at the same time, taking real-life constraints such as applicability, ease of operation, construction loads into consideration, and satisfying design and aesthetic requirements of the architectural design team.

summary This paper focuses on the development of a knowledge model in the context of energy efficiency and indoor climate interventions, their impacts on each other and on architectural design preferences (for instance architectural expression or any spatial functionality aspect) via an existing house case study. In addition, it attempts to discuss how this type of model can be a reference for a decision support tool and be applied to the (re)design of dwellings. The model is considered to provide an integral knowledge base for the design professional both to evaluate existing designs and to use it as a support during design and decision making in order to reach the best possible solution, with optimal performance in terms of indoor comfort, energy-efficiency and overall design performance. In other words, its aim is to enable the assessment of the performance of the end result with respect to design choices, beforehand. In this paper, design performance is modeled by means of fuzzy logic operations. It is a method to deal with subjective and vague requirements such as low energy consumption, low overheating risk, high comfort, etc. The method of intelligent information processing is explained and a partial application is presented.

summary This paper reports a case involving computational practices in design process with an aim to understand the role of digital and non-digital tools in the design process. Following an ethnographic approach, we aimed at understanding the nature of the interactions among team participants which are human and non-human in a distributed system. summary The paper reports key instances from our field observations involving computational design practices to understand the process of generating and assessing alternative design options. Following an ethnographic approach, we investigate the nature of interactions within the team, which we conceptualize as a distributed cognitive system. We have observed a persistent effort –mostly driven by team leaders- to make the design idea -and design process in general- more legible and transparent for individuals within the team as well as others including clients and consultants. Through situated observations of collaborative computational practices, we investigate how design ideas are represented and externalized in a distributed cognitive system with the intention of achieving a legible schema to guide the design process. We report our interpretations concerning the concept of legibility and its various dimensions which predominantly relate to the need to clarify and justify the core design drivers and approaches in form-finding.

summary The research presented in the paper formulates part of the methodological approach of a recently completed PhD thesis. The principle aim of the thesis is to achieve simultaneous integration of tower subsystems which can coherently adapt to their internal and external context during the initial phases of the design process. In this framework, the tower subsystems are grouped as the structural system, floor system, vertical circulation system, facade system, and environmental system. The paper focuses on the implementation of the specific biomimetic analogies towards the integration of tower subsystems through computationally generated dynamic systems. The biomimetic analogies are the mechanical and organizational properties of branched constructions, the mechanical properties of the bamboo stem, and the micro-structure of the porcupine quill/ hedgehog spine. Each biomimetic analogy is described in relation to the design domain. Methods of employing the mathematical and geometrical principles of the biomimetic analogies during design explorations are elaborated. Outcomes of the design output are outlined and discussed with a concentration on achieving tower subsystem integration, differentiation, and co-adaptation properties.

summary This paper presents a novel approach for the creation of metal lightweight self-supporting structures through the employment of metal kerfing and robotic sheet panel expansion. Research objectives focus on the synthesis of material behavior on a local scale and the structural performance on a global scale via advanced computational and robotic methods. There are inherent structural properties to expanded metal sheets which can be employed to achieve an integrated building system without the need for a secondary supporting structure. A computational workflow that integrates Finite Element Analysis, geometrical optimization, and robotic toolpath planning has been developed. This workflow is informed by the parameters of material experimentation on sheet metal kerfing and robotic sheet metal expansion on the local panel scale. The proposed methodology is applied on a range of panels with a custom-built robotic fabrication setup for the design, fabrication, and assembly of a one-to-one scale working prototype.

summary The paper argues that the tower needs to respond to its environment by changing from a closed building typology towards a heterogeneous, differentiated open system that can adapt to the changing conditions within and around it. This argument is supported by focusing on the analogies and principles of specific biological examples in order to propose computationally-generated self-organizing systems. The goal of analyzing these models is to integrate their structural and geometrical characteristics with the aim of overcoming high lateral loading conditions in towers, as well as elaborating on the existence of multi-functionality and integration throughout the subsystems of the tower. A series of computational models which abstract the biological properties and articulate them with a generative approach through the use of agent-based systems are implemented according to designated evaluation criteria.
