summary This paper presents an conceptual framework for the construction of generative mapping processes as a basis for creating active design tools in the domain of architecture. Such generative processes are seen as key components within evolutionary systems that manipulate populations of alternative solutions in order to discover previously unexplored possibilities. Solutions are represented in two forms: as highly encoded genotypes referred to as design seeds and as decoded phenotypes referred to as design proposals. The generative process maps the design seed to the design proposal. The discussion of generative processes is in two parts. In the first part it is argued that any generative process that aims to create a wide range of solutions that differ from each other in fundamental ways must focus on a limited subcategory of possible designs. It is proposed that the endeavour to create active design tools demands that the focus be on the designer's highly personalised style, called a design-schema. The second part discusses how to uncover the essence of an architectural design-schema. In particular, it is argued that implicit and familiar aspects of buildings must be scrutinised in order to reveal the knowledge that is essential to capturing and codifying a design-schema. A range of rationalisations and conceptualisations of built form are presented with examples to illustrate possible routes of analysis. Finally, in conclusion, the possibility of discovering universal generators common to many divers generative processes are discussed.

summary Evolutionary designis an approach that evolves populations of design variants through the iterative application of a set of computational procedures. For architecture and urban design, the developmental procedure typically needs to be capable of generating bounded variability, whereby design variants are both highly variable and highly constrained. This paper proposes a template for creating such developmental procedures. The template uses decision chain encoding techniques in order to generate a sparse skeleton model, and then uses standard parametric modelling techniques in order to generate a detailed form model. A demonstration is presented where the template is used to create a developmental procedure for generating design variants for a large residential project.

summary In evolutionary design algorithms, the evolutionary procedures have a major impact on the quality of the genotype-fitness mapping, which in turn impacts the performance of the algorithm. Two key issues affecting the quality of a mapping are the size of the genotype space and the locality of the mapping. In order to systematically investigate the role that genotype space and locality have on evolutionary performance, a set of experiments are conducted using benchmark test cases consisting of simple LEGO structures. Three different developmental procedures are implemented and tested. The results confirm that locality is critical in achieving good performance and in some cases may have a greater impact than genotype length.

summary Generative design tools can accelerate the optioneering process by allowing designers to quickly generate large numbers of design variants, thereby enabling a wider and more thorough exploration to be conducted. This paper focuses on procedures for generating inner city street networks and city block massing studies for sites within existing urban areas. A novel procedure is proposed that is capable of subdividing complex non-orthogonal sites into similarly sized well-formed plots and subsequently further subdividing these plots into sizes appropriate for selected city block typologies. The application of the procedure is demonstrated on a site in Singapore.

summary This paper reports on the development of a multi-objective evolutionary developmental design environment, called EDDE. The goal of the system is to make it easier for designers to use evolutionary techniques to explore design possibilities. The system consists of a generic evolutionary core into which a set of design specific scripts need to be plugged in. The system uses a web based client-server architecture that can either be run on a single computer or on multiple computers in parallel. Initial experiments have shown the system to be effective in evolving designs.

title A Framework For Generating And Evolving Building Designs

summary This paper describes a comprehensive framework for generative evolutionary design. The key problem that is identified is generating alternative designs with an appropriate level of variability. Within the proposed framework, the design process is split into two phases: in the first phase, the design team develops and encodes the essential and identifiable character of the designs to be generated and evolved; in the second phase, the design team uses an evolutionary system to generate and evolve designs that embody this character. This approach allows design variability to be carefully controlled. In order to verify the feasibility of the proposed framework, a generative process capable of generating controlled variability is implemented and demonstrated.

summary In early stages of architectural design, highly simplified minimal models are often preferred while in the later stages maximal Building Information Models (BIM) are required that include the relevant information for detailed design documentation. This research focuses on the transition from minimal to maximal models and proposes a semi-automated workflow that consist of two main steps: analysis and templating. The analysis step starts with the minimal geometric model and decorates this model with a set of semantic and topological attributes. The templating step starts the decorated model and generates a transitional BIM model which can then be readily altered and populated with high resolution building information. A demonstration of two test cases shows the feasibility of the approach.

summary Designers interested in applying evo-devo-design methods for performance based multi-objective design exploration have typically faced two main hurdles: it’s too hard and too slow. An evo-devo-design method is proposed that effectively overcomes the hurdles of skill and speed by leveraging two key technologies: computational workflows and cloud computing. In order to tackle the skills hurdle, Workflow Systems are used that allow users to define computational workflows using visual programming techniques. In order to tackle the speed hurdle, cloud computing infrastructures are used in order to allow the evolutionary process to be parallelized. We refer to the proposed method as Evo-Devo In The Sky (EDITS). This paper gives an overview of both the EDITS method and the implementation of a software environment supporting the EDITS method. Finally, a case-study is presented of the application of the EDITS method.

summary Building Information Modelling systems enable the creation of associative parametric models that include sets of interlinked parametric objects. Graph-based modelling systems on the other hand enable the creation of parametric models with more complex iterative behaviours. Parametric BIM workflows aim to link graph-based systems to BIM systems. A key requirement of such workflows is the ability to generate associative BIM models. However, current approaches to creating such workflows are complicated by the fact that the process of cooking is only able to generate explicit geometry. An alternative approach is proposed in which the cooking process is able to generate associative models, thereby enabling more user friendly and streamlined BIM workflows to be created.

summary In this study, the perceptions of on a computer screen displayed street photographs, were compared with the experiences of their real-life counterparts. Using a semantic descriptive method, SMB, experimental subjects assessed eight urban environments, presented both in field and on computer screen. Assessments were made in different light and seasonal conditions. It was shown that the perception of street pictures, presented on computer screen, did correspond well with the experience of the outdoor originals in most of the used semantic descriptive dimensions. Discrepancies between the two presentations were generally small and comparable with the minor perceptual differences between the various light conditions. Deviations could also be ascribed to certain non-perceptual factors, like the subjects' backgrounds or the environments' cognitive peculiarities. The findings indicated also possible improvement of the computer presentation technique by widening the pictures' informational content.

summary Design of an efficient and suitably rigid support structure of a tall building is constantly a challenge for architects and engineers. Recently this challenge is enormously increased by the safety requirements conditioned by numerous emergency reasons. Among others one should mention here about effects of fire or a terrorist attack. The complex forms of structural systems have to be examined in many ways. Comprehensive analyses of these systems are carried out by application of suitable numerical models of these systems. The paper contains examples of shapes of structural systems proposed by the author together with definitions of their numerical models prepared in the programming language Formian.

summary This study is concerned with the building thermal performance education in the context of computer application. The project contains the original script coded in Maxscript for use in Autodesk 3ds Max. The tool workflow and functionality focus on the thermal calculations connected with sculpturing manipulation of architectural volume in pre-conception project stages, when detailed project solutions are undefined. The algorithm is based on the manual methods included in the curriculum. The paper also presents a study of software analyzing thermal performance as a justification for the script vision and educational implementation. The script is rather an addition than alternative for existing software, so it does not assume any resignation from more sophisticated products.

summary A new approach to design - Curvilinear forms designed in synthetic digital space - indicates the direction of a new turn in architecture, interest in its structural and environmental aspect. The presented case studies show how curvilinear forms of such architecture coexist with the historic context and how they inscribe in to the existing urban fabric with a complex historical substance. Following the Zeitgeist, the new architecture reconfigures the expression, reception and materiality, as well as uses the context to validate its existence. The features of this new architecture may be referred to the achievements of the Baroque and considered in a wider context of historical changes in the urban fabric.

summary The paper presents the analyses of potential of networked media and computer tools for acting with the digital representations of local cultural values in order to describe and manage architectural cultural heritage. The classification of cultural heritage identifiers is presented, focussing on its applicability to organise digital storage and computer-assisted acting with cultural heritage.The objective of the paper is to inspire discussion about representing of “cultural identity” of digital data, in emphasize to possibilities of creating more digital tools and methods for management of cultural heritage. It is stated that handling complexity of architectural design should refer to heritage values. Generally, digital representations of architectural objects, similarly to real architecture, must have their cultural identities.

summary The problems of storage of local cultural heritage in digital databases, are reported in the paper. An exemplar case of RuralXML framework is presented. Three main groups of challenges relating to “culturally rich” databases are recognised:1. Estimation of the significance of digital databases for supporting design process, educational needs and scientific investigations;2. The conceptual problems with digital representation of “the paper heritage”3. The technical problems related to the architectural databases.The most important aspects of the problem are mentioned, as a background to a discussion about the reciprocal dependencies between technology and local values, i.e. how technology supports acting with the local architectural heritage, and how “cultural significance” values technology. We claim that digital technology not only enables storage and management of such data, but it also adds a new dimension to the design, making it “locally-sensitive” and oriented towards context by means of employing digitally archived architectural data. The accessibility to information about the “local” architecture heritage is important for local as well as global design. The premises for such statements, are presented.

summary Building's spatial structure described in a BIM model can be used for retrieving the information required for determining the shortest path within the building. The matrix method and the visibility method are the two main ways of dividing space into prime factors. Both are widely used to find the shortest path. In order to compare the performance of both methods, several tests were carried out with various versions of the floorplan modification (room area, the surface of internal walls, distance between the entrance, and exit in a straight line and within the boundary marked by walls of the maze). The results revealed significant differences between the visibility graph and the matrix method.

summary Agent-based modelling method was used in the study to simulate the behaviour of the crowd pushing against the "bottleneck" areas in the building. The described research involved a simulation testing of the throughput of the staircase used for the evacuation of a building located on a university campus. The study proposes a proprietary method for investigating throughput in a two-dimensional model using the horizontal compound of the average speeds achieved on the stairs by users, considering their age. The method used makes it relatively simple to study the maximum throughput of a stairwell separately from other factors affecting evacuation performance. Based on the results obtained in simulations, the capacity value in the studied situation was determined and several behaviours related to crowd density and stairway speed were observed. This method can be used to simulate the distribution and number of emergency exits from a building using only the maximum number of evacuated occupants, without modelling all floors of the building.

Protospace software environment and SwarmCAD software application are introduced and physical, real scale prototypes of architectural installations illustrate the new approach to creating architecture.
