summary Flight Patterns is a 48 inch box kite that studies how spatial and perceptual complexity can be developed through the structural logic of the space frame. The project reinvestigates Alexander Graham Bell's tetrahedral kite as a potential architectural structure through a logic of hierarchy and difference, trading lift for a complex three-dimensional order of intricately stacked volumes.

title Horizontal Forming in Additive Manufacturing: Design and Architecture Perspective
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2020.1.203
source D. Holzer, W. Nakapan, A. Globa, I. Koh (eds.), RE: Anthropocene, Design in the Age of Humans - Proceedings of the 25th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, 5-6 August 2020, pp. 203-212
summary Extrusion based three-dimensional additive manufacturing technology forms objects by driving the material through a nozzle depositing a linear structure through vector-building blocks called roads. In a common 3-axis system, the roads are stacked layer upon layer for forming the final object. However, forming overhanging geometry in this way requires additional support structures increasing material usage and effective printing time. The paper presents a novel Horizontal forming (HF) approach and method for forming overhanging geometry, HF is a new extrusion-based AM approach that allows rapid and stable forming of horizontal structures without additional support in 3-axis systems. This approach can provide new design and manufacturing possibilities for extrusion AM, with emphasis on medium and large-scale AM. HF can affect the outcome's aesthetic and mechanical properties. Moreover, it can significantly accelerate the production process and reduce material waste. The present paper maps the influence of various parameters employed in the HF method, providing a deeper understanding of the printing process. Additionally, it explores and demonstrates the potential functional and aesthetic characteristics that can be achieved with HF for industrial design and architectural products.

title Parametric Tools and Creativity in Architectural Practice
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2015.613
source Emerging Experience in Past, Present and Future of Digital Architecture, Proceedings of the 20th International Conference of the Association for Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2015) / Daegu 20-22 May 2015, pp. 613-622
summary This paper empirically tested the relationship between creativity and computing tools in two different architectural practice settings: one that extensively uses parametric tools for design and fabrication and another that predominantly uses conventional CAD tools in design. The paper surveyed 14 parametric practices and 17 non parametric practices from the UK. The results were statistically analysed using IBM_SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). The analysis of variance between the 2 groups revealed significant differences on the four domains of creativity. Statistical variance between the two groups on originality was big. Also the length of time subjects used parametric tools correlated significantly with three measures of creativity (fluency, variety and elaboration). Cluster analysis on design cognition of the two groups showed significant pattern differences on how each group structures the design process.

title The Bishopsgate Tower Case Study
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 5 - no. 1, pp. 62-81
summary This paper summarizes the ongoing research on the Bishopsgate Tower in the City of London designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. We present a pre-rational geometry computational solution targeting a constraint-aware exploration of the architectural design-space, while interactively optimizing building performance in terms of constructability and cost-efficiency. We document a novel approach in building metrics optimization supported by parametric technologies and embedded analytical algorithms. The process is indicative of how computational methods will develop in the future and help designers find solutions for increasingly complex spaces.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2002.285
source CAADRIA 2002 [Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / ISBN 983-2473-42-X] Cyberjaya (Malaysia) 18–20 April 2002, pp. 285-292
summary In the last decade, the ubiquitous computing paradigm has pushed computation out of desktop and made computational services pervasive throughout a physical environment. In this paper, we describe the work in progress in developing ubiquitous/pervasive applications supporting digital design media presentation. The result of the experimental study in various spatial settings is reported. Finally, we present a model of interaction towards a human-centered reactive environment, and discuss some interaction and social issues that must be addressed in implementation.

title A Shape Independent Theory of Space Allocation
source Environment and Planning B. 1977. vol. 4: pp. 37-50 : ill. includes bibliography
summary A theory of space allocation in architectural design is presented. The theory is completely independent of the shapes of the spaces. The problem is broken down into four hierarchical levels of abstraction. The top level is the number of spaces. The second level consists of the adjacencies between the spaces, represented as abstract graphs. The third level is concerned with the different planar embeddings or geometries of the adjacency graphs. The bottom level is represented by labelled bubble diagrams. At each level, the number of design alternatives is finite and it is shown how they can be systematically enumerated

title Creating architectural models from images
source EUROGRAPHICS'99
summary We present methods for creating 3D graphical models of scenes from a limited numbers of images, i.e. one or two, in situations where no scene co-ordinate measurements are available. The methods employ constraints available from geometric relationships that are common in architectural scenes - such as parallelism and orthogonality - together with constraints available from the camera. In particular, by using the circular points of a plane simple, linear algorithms are given for computing plane rectification, plane orientation and camera calibration from a single image. Examples of image based 3D modelling are given for both single images and image pairs.

summary Computers, the new digital media, liberate the duality of concepts of space in human civilization. The construction and simulation powers of digital media trigger all kinds of unlimited imagination. The new space of this kind may be called digital space or virtual space. This new space is between mental and physical spaces because it provides designers with not only unlimited imaginality of mental space but also live-inside perception of physical space. A new concept of space of mankind is thus generated.

summary The design of virtual architecture is currently ill-defined and lacks a framework for understanding existing designs. We present a basis for the representation of virtual architecture that follows from the idea of conceptual metaphor. This approach addresses the limitations of current environments for designing virtual architecture by providing a basis for combining visualisation and object design.

summary This paper describes the developments of the CUMINCAD database since 1999 when it was first presented and some statistical information, how the service is being used. CUMINCAD started as a bibliographic database storing meta information about CAADrelated publications. Recently, full texts are being added. The process of creation of electronic copies of papers in pdf-format is described as well as decisions which were taken in this context. Over the last two years 20.000 users visited CUMINCAD. We present a brief analysis of their behavior and interaction patterns. This and the forthcoming possibility of a full-text-search will open up a new perspective for CAAD-research.
