summary Exploring problems through multiple alternatives is a key aspect of design. In this paper, we present a prototype system as an extension to existing parametric CAD tools that enables parallel generation and editing of design alternatives. The system is built on two fundamental ideas. First, use of subjunctive dependency graphs enables simultaneous work on multiple design variations. These graphs capture and reveal complex data flow across alternative parametric CAD models. Second, prototype-based modeling provides a weak notion of inheritance enabling incremental description of differences between alternatives. The system is intended to be general enough to be used in different CAD platforms and other systems using graph-based modeling. The three basic system functions are definition of alternatives (variations) using prototype-based modeling, structural and parametric divergences of the prototypes, and interactive comparison. The goal of this research is consistent with the general qualities expected from any creativity support tools: enabling exploration and simultaneous development of variations.

summary With increased computing capabilities and large screen displays, the opportunity to support multiple designs in a single interface has recently become practical. Generating a large number of design alternatives is still a challenge but equally is to manage, review, understand and make-sense out of this multi-dimensional design space. Especially, when we consider the human cognitive limitations and the overly crowded informational displays. This research focuses on developing spatial metaphors based on the previous design literature and the findings from a study conducted to understand how to manage large design spaces with thousands of alternatives. We compare the existing design gallery systems used in practice with the spatial metaphors proposed in this paper. The goal is to develop a spatial structuring toolkit for interface designers of such tools.

summary Today’s generative design tools and large screen displays present opportunities for designers to explore large number of design alternatives. Besides numerous studies in design, the act of exploring design space is yet to be integrated in the design of new digital media. To understand how designer’s search patterns will uncover when provided with a gallery of large numbers of design solutions, we conducted a lab experiment with nine designers. Particularly the study explored how designers used spatial structuring of their work environment to make informed design decisions. The results of the study present intuitions for development of next generation front-end gallery interfaces for managing a large set of design variations while enabling simultaneous editing of design parameters.

summary The existing research on design space exploration favors the exploration of multiple parallel designs, however the act of exploring a design space is still to be integrated in the design of new digital media. We conducted an experiment to understand how designers navigate through large numbers of design alternatives generated from parametric models. We analyzed the data with a purpose-built visualization tool. We observed that participants changed the task environment and took design actions, frequently combining these into action combinations. Five tasks emerged from our analysis: Criteria Building, Criteria Testing, Criteria Applying, Reflection and (Re)Setting. From our analysis, we suggest several features for future systems for interacting with design alternatives.

summary If a space is a sentient being, how would it recognize the environment to establish interactive relationships with people and objects? The modern living environment is full of ubiquitous computing and data flows, the smart space is equipped with rich technologies allowing data exchange between devices for the purpose of meeting human demands. However, the lack of development for a basic environment with cognitive abilities presents a challenge for creating an adaptable space, which can grow and control our surroundings to enhance our behaviour. Thus, the goal of this study is to propose a basic cognition of a sentient space. Firstly, the author designed the methodology for a sensorimotor through learning biological mechanism. Three adaptive strategies of exploratory behaviour are then developed to operate the cognitive map of the space. Lastly, the process is visualized to enable human interaction. Through the on-site installation, usability of the prototype is verified and positive user feedbacks were obtained. In conclusion, the ultimate goal of the research is to develop a space with the characteristic of a sentient being through a prototype, also, it allows users to understand how human activities affect the cognition embodied in the space.

summary The number of Virtual Design Studio experiments that use a Digital Pin-up Board (WWW) and video conferencing tools is rapidly increasing. As we see that several schools have introduced group-ware to support asynchronous communication of their projects, it is possible to regard that techniques for asynchronous communication have already been developed to some extent. However, participants of those projects still have difficulty with synchronous communication. For example, though designers often desire to exchange models among members to get critical feedback and achieve fast problem solving while working at their desks, there are few CADs that can support concurrent synchronous design communication among members. The first half of this paper discusses a model of synchronous design communication that uses CAD models, and then proposes a prototype of tools that use Microsoft NetMeeting and AutoCAD R14: GW-CAD III. In the middle, a user interface system that enables designers to conveniently model and exchange separate sets of models necessary to elaborate different aspects of design is proposed: "Network Clipboard" "Modeling Space", "Plan Face", and "Section Face". Finally, this paper discusses the results of several experiments that used the prototype.

summary Natural organisms through their evolutionary developments, acquire adaptive morphological and behavioural characteristics within their environmental contexts. Through homeostatic behaviours, organisms, individually and collectively, will sustain internal and external equilibrium in face of environmental fluctuations. There is a wide range of morphological and behavioural traits across multiple species that are rooted in their homeostatic mechanisms throughout their lives. This paper presents an evolutionary design workflow with embedded homeostatic principles to generate a building cluster that is adapted to the contexts with extreme solar radiation.

summary There are many discussions about spatial consensus or further to “reuse” the design of Chinese Garden in the modern context. For addressing this question, we need to be able to represent the spatial elements of Chinese Garden digitally. However, only few researches in computational design field start to tackle the problem. Furthermore, most of literatures we found are basically the description of abstract or sometime vague concepts. The scope of this research— spatial composition, an efficient description of spatial elements of Chinese Garden in literatures and their relations will be the goal of this research. In this research, we analyze on spatial elements and characteristics of Lin Family Compound to create a suitable database that can offer further researches. For organizing the information we collect, we propose a system called DiGE using the EntityRelationship Data Model. In addition, we will use natural language processing to deal with the unclear data of words depiction.

summary Automata based modeling of urban environments focuseson the bottom up emergence of particular phenomena through interactions at the disaggregated level. Two popular approachesare Cellular Automata (CA) for modelling fixed automata and Agent Based Modelling (ABM) for modelling mobile automata.However, certain urban phenomena cannot easily be modelled by either CA or ABM alone. This research focuses on one suchphenomenon, referred to as leap-frog development, which is a discontinuous and dispersed type of urban growth. A hybridautomata model is proposed for modelling such phenomena that combines both CA and ABM into a single integrated model. Theproposed model is demonstrated by applying it to a case-study in Dhaka city for simulating the growth of informalsettlements associated with the readymade garment industry.

summary The relationship of different performance objects may be very complicated that designers can't guarantee the improvement of one object don't affect the others. Multi-objective optimization algorithms provide Pareto optimal design solutions, but because of the nonlinearity introduced by the objective functions, the relationships in the objective space do not extend to the decision variable space and vice versa. Based on the design of building blocks and west facade in a practical project, the paper put forward a visualized method for optimization process of building performance, and combine the multi-objective optimization algorithm with the visualization of fitness landscape, so that architects can easily obtain the knowledge of complex relationships between building performance and building parameters. It is more conducive to obtain a design scheme which can balance the requirements of appearance and performance at the same time, and achieve the ultimate goal of improving the efficiency of design.

However, due to the limited bandwidth of the Internet transfer of detailedCAD based assembly models is slow. Therefore, tools based on polygonized representations of assembly models have been utilized during collaborative design. Thesemodels are primarily used for visualization, which is an important activity during modeling. However, providing the designers with the ability to perform real-time geometricmodification, assembly constraints specification and concurrent design of different components/sub-assemblies will enable designers to collaborate effectively during design.This paper presents a new geometric representation called the AREP and a prototypical system (cPAD) that uses this representation, which implements the collaborationparadigm by supporting these activities.

summary In the present study we adopted the tasks and the experimental procedures used in a recent series of study by Cooper (1990, 1991) for the purpose of examining how we utilized two-dimensional information in a line-drawing of visual objects to construct the corresponding three-dimensional mental structure represented by the 2-D displays. We expected that the stimulus materials we used avoided some of the problems that Cooper's stimuli had, and with that we examined the effect of complexity on the process of constructing 3-D models from 2-D displays. Such a manipulation helps to elucidate the difficulties of solving problems that require spatial abilities. We also investigated whether or not providing information representing an object viewed from different standpoints would affect the construction of the object's 3-D model. Some researchers have argued that 3-D models, once constructed, should be viewer-independent or viewpoint-invariant, while others have suggested that 3-D models are affected by the viewpoint of observation. Data pertinent to this issue are presented and discussed.

summary This paper proposes a performance-driven design workflow based on Total Sunlight Hours evaluation. The objective is to investigate an optimal solution of a building massing design meeting solar radiation criteria as early as in the conceptual design stage. In our paper, such a process is demonstrated through a case study on an Experimental Social Housing project. We illustrate how design constraints are encoded with the evaluation criterion, Total Sunlight Hours (TSH), through an integrated computational workflow. Alongside with such a computation-intensive process, we also experimented with the same design project using a conventional design approach. The advantages and disadvantages of using a performance-driven computational workflow over a conventional design process are discussed and presented. In particular, we examine how a performance-driven design workflow can be integrated within the iterative design process and how human designers interact with computation to investigate optimal design solutions.

summary Inspired by intelligent skin, this research constructs a soft pneumatic robotic architectural system based on the interaction between inflatable material agents and the human body. It aims to provide flexibly changeable scene modes for dynamic inhabiting through responsive spatial performance. From the idea of the Fun Palace and the structure and performance spatial methodology to the proposal of responsive/soft architecture and relevant examples such as Furl and Robot Soft, the literature review provides the foundation and direction for the establishment of research experiments. The research methodology is based on structure and performance, oriented to explore soft material agents, link input information and output modules to realize the manifestation of human-space interaction and spatial performance and assemble the basic configuration of the system. As a result, a synergistic architectural interaction system like a media center that can provide a variety of adaptive space scenes is built, which can realize real-time perception and responsive control of the interactive process, and at the same time provide richness of scene performance beyond established architectural configurations, confirming the possibility of creating a behaviorally responsive architecture by integrating modularly morphing spaces, AI-sensing systems, and interaction technologies. This study explored responsive human settlements by expanding soft pneumatic robots in architecture. It can expand to fields such as machine cognition at the input level, further realize the real-time feedback system at the output level, and can evolve with the information interconnection of urban landscapes and residential communities in terms of spatial interaction. The work gives a convincing vision of architectural intelligence through soft robotics and is expected to continue to develop and bring more inspiring innovations with its integrated methods and connotations.
