summary This study introduces the Meta-Modeling process adopted from the Model Based System Engineering field (MBSE) to explore an approach for the generation of design alternatives beyond the restrictions of the Parametric Models that mainly produce geometric variations and have limitations in terms of topological transformations during the exploratory design tasks. The Meta-Model is the model of attributes and relationships among objects of a particular domain. It describes objects and concepts in abstract terms independent from the complexity of the geometric models and provides mapping mechanisms that facilitate the interfacing with parametric parts. The flexibility of these computer-interpretable and human-readable models can contribute to creatively manipulate the design knowledge embedded in parametric models.

summary We describe a computer program VOLUME for interactive 3D modelling of building which can be used in many problems (heat losses calculations, architectural evaluation, ...) where a geometric representation is required. The program is more than a tool to input a geometry: it is also a tool for design; manipulations are very easy and many design solutions can be tried. We then discuss about developments for improving the quality of that tool in the design process.

summary This paper discusses issues raised during an experiment about the use of digital fabrication technologies in non-industrial contexts in three concurrent fronts: The first front was to get familiarized with the production ecology of a non-industrial building context, the favela. The second front was to verify the accessibility of digital fabrication technologies outside the industry by building a low cost CNC milling machine based on DIY instructions available in the internet. And the last front was to develop useful solutions with this technology to that context. Partial results are guidelines for improving the technology in order to fit the context

summary This report investigates different kinds of Urban Performance in Thames Path, South Bank of Thames River. Urban Performance is defined here as the expression or manifestation of different social groups in the city space regarding the appropriation of a specific place for its spatial practices. The Urban Performances are intrinsic to the cultural expression of the city and revealed through the spatial experience of both performer and spectator. The aim of this paper is to shed light on different kind of urban performances and how are they linked to spatial and syntactic properties of space. This topic is intrinsic in the space syntax theory due its fundamental relation between spatiality and human activity. The research method used were, direct observations by static snapshots and traces (related with human movement) and a survey of potential attractors, active facades and path widths. The results were overlaid with spatial analysis in terms of performers isovists and syntactic analysis through visibility graph. The findings show a strong relation between performers’ use of space and visibility in the urban area, and a high influence of the cultural attractions and public services that works as movement attractors. The discussion is developed through the research findings and theories of spatial experience putting forward varied interpretations related with the research topic and the selected site. The report concludes that the urban performances in Thames path is determined by the human co presence in the space, due to this strategic points chosen along the path by the performers are strongly related with the visual connections in the system. Furthermore, the attractors play an important role shaping the spatial experience and urban character of the studied area.

title Information Spaces for Mobile City Access

summary This paper describes two complementary European research projects that share common interests and goals.The work described is intended to facilitate city analysis and support decision-making. The first project focuses on the distribution, access and ease of use of city data. The system allows access to historical data concerning key buildings in Liverpool, England, via a suite of web-based tools and a palmtop device. The second project looks at extending the functionality of traditional computer aided design (CAD) software to enable geometric and semantic data to be combined within a single environment. The system allows those involved in city planning to better understand the past and present development pattern of an area so that their decisions on future proposals are better informed.The paper concludes by describing a system that integrates particular aspects of the two projects, and the potential that this integration can bring.This new work provides mobile access to historical city development data, current city information and tools to support urban project development.

summary While the teaching of the phenomenon of form as well as space is normally seen within an environment of free experimentation and personal expression, other directions prove to be worth of pursuit. The proposed paper represents such an exploration. The generation of controlled complexity and structural transformations have been the title of the project which forms the base of this paper. In it, the potential for creative development of the student was explored in such a way, that as in the sciences a process can be reproduced or an exploration utilized in further experimentation. The cube as a well proven B.A.U. or basic architectural unit has again been used in our work. Even a simple object like a cube has many properties. As properties are never pure, but always related to other properties, and looking at a single property as a specific value of a variable, it is possible to link a whole field of objects. These links provide a network of paths through which exploration and development is possible. The paper represents a first step in a direction which we think will compliment the already established basic design program.

summary In this paper, relations between music and visual perception are investigated using statistical analisys of the entailment made amongst them by different subjects in several experimental situations designed for such purpose. The goal, is to discover a set of elements and management mechanisms that are common to both field, from wich it is posible to detect significant constants and discard atypical relations. Finally, we will seek to develop a series of mathematical models that may be implemented as software to analize music and synthesis of forms, and simulate human analisys of relations between them.

summary The purpose of this experience consisted of linking two methodologies usually used exclusively in the study of the design operation in the university academic environment: working with cardboard models and augmented reality. The methodology used consisted of work in groups based on skills to build cardboard models, to model in 3D, and to work with augmented reality. They developed interior space designs through the interaction of physical models (made of cardboard) and observed models on those physical models through systems equipped with applications to view augmented reality. Among the main results of this experience are the possibility of interacting with dynamic objects modeled in 3D in the physical field of the cardboard model, and the successful integration of two work methodologies (analog and digital), at least in one of the stages of the design operation.

summary The study aimed to develop and test an environmentally friendly, easily deployable, and affordable solution for socio-economically challenged populations of the world. 3D-printing (additive manufacturing) was used as a rapid prototyping tool to develop and test a façade system that would modulate air velocity through modifying nozzle profiles to utilize natural cross ventilation techniques in order to improve human comfort in buildings. Constrained by seasonal weather and interior partitions which block the ability to cross ventilate, buildings can be equipped to perform at reduced energy loads and improved internal human comfort by using a façade system composed of retractable nozzles developed through this empirical research. This paper outlines the various stages of development and results obtained from physically testing different profiles of nozzle-forms that would populate the façade system. In addition to optimizing nozzle profiles, the team investigated the potential of collapsible tube systems to permit precise placement of natural ventilation directed at occupants of the built space.

Communication needs are specified and implemented in a prototype based on a modular knowledge-based approach for simulation of a distributed multi-user system. The results of these simulations are reported, which show communication to be scalable as the numbers of applications and the size of the design increases. Finally, the implications of the results on real distributed systems are discussed.

summary This paper is concerned with the ongoing changes and the evolution of CAAD using machine-assisted techniques. It is feasible to create a hypothesis of the identity of the discipline depicted in the archived published output, and semantically link it to the data cloud. This allows for expansion of the meanings embodied in the research and inference about what CAAD is, and to trace back how the field progressed. We present several case-studies showing how this inference is done and finally, observations are elaborated and an outlook on further work is discussed.

summary The development of expert systems (ES) for manufacturing problems indicates a need to interact with potentially large amounts of data, much of which resides elsewhere in the ES user's organization. A large amount of information required for planning, design, and control operations can be made available through an existing database management system (DBMS). The need for an ES to access that data is critical. This paper presents two approaches to the development of ES- DBMS interfaces, both query-language based. One approach uses a procedural attachment to the ES language to obtain the required data via the DBMS query language, while the other one uses a separate interface program between the ES and the query language of the DBMS. The procedural attachment is able to acquire data from a DBMS at a faster rate than the interface program; however, the procedural attachment lacks knowledge of the DBMS schema. On the other hand, the interface program sacrifices speed but promotes flexibility, as it has the capability of selecting which DBMS to extract the required data from and allowing augmentation of schema knowledge outside of the ES. A disadvantage of the interface approach is the amount of time involved in data retrieval. The process of writing information to disk files is I/O intensive. This can be quite slow, particularly in PROLOG, the language used to implement the ES. Thus the use of such an interface is only suitable in applications such as design, where extremely fast I/O is not required

summary This paper addresses ergonomic drawbacks in NASA’s modular Multi-Mission Space Exploration Vehicle’s (MMSEV) latest prototype, 2B’s nosecone, to propose new iteration based on considerations such as mass minimization, visibility maximization, and structural integrity. With 2B as a benchmark, and using computational tools typically used in the AEC industry to carry out FEA analysis, comparisons are made with potential design changes. The numerical and visual data such as weight, and stress distribution, provided by the benchmark analysis, served as metrics for comparison and redesign. In turn, this design development exercise attempts to bring together the different design approaches to design, held by human- factors designers and structural engineers.
