title Parametric Urban Design: Joining morphology and urban indicators in a single interactive model
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2012.1.167
source Achten, Henri; Pavlicek, Jiri; Hulin, Jaroslav; Matejovska, Dana (eds.), Digital Physicality - Proceedings of the 30th eCAADe Conference - Volume 1 / ISBN 978-9-4912070-2-0, Czech Technical University in Prague, Faculty of Architecture (Czech Republic) 12-14 September 2012, pp.167-175
summary A parametric urban design system integrating GIS data in a CAD environment is proposed as a platform for discussing urban plans providing flexibility and information access in an interactive fashion. The proposed system links calculations of urban indicators with the parameter manipulation of the layout geometry, therefore allowing for a systematic update of indicators according to design modifi cations. Hence, design may be fine-tuned in an informed manner enhancing the quality of design decisions.

title Parametric urban design: An interactive sketching system for shaping neighborhoods
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2011.225
source RESPECTING FRAGILE PLACES [29th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-9-4912070-1-3], University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Architecture (Slovenia) 21-24 September 2011, pp.225-234
summary In this paper we show the structure of an urban design parametric system. The system is dynamic and builds an interactive relation with the designer updating the layout and related data at each input change. The responsiveness of the system allows the designer to gain awareness on the qualitative consequences of each design move by comparing a design state with a set of urban indicators and density measures which are automatically calculated along with the geometrical updates.

title An Urban Grammar for Praia: Towards Generic Shape Grammars for Urban Design
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2009.575
source Computation: The New Realm of Architectural Design [27th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-0-9541183-8-9] Istanbul (Turkey) 16-19 September 2009, pp. 575-584
summary This paper presents a shape grammar for planned urban spaces intending an implementation for generative urban design. This implementation will form part of an urban design support tool defined to formulate, generate and evaluate urban designs. The goal is to formulate urban program descriptions according to context conditions using a description grammar and generate alternative design solutions using a shape grammar. The generation is guided by several evaluation processes performed by an evaluation module. In this paper we are focusing on the definition of the generic shape grammar using an existent urban plan as a case study. The aim is to encode the design moves of the urban designer into generic grammar rules amenable for specific instantiations through the customization of rule parameters.

title The city as a street system: A street description for a city ontology
source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary The street system is an important component of the city ontology created for a generative urban design tool and should be able to integrate the many visions or interpretations that designers or other urban design agents may have about streets. This paper describes several characteristics of the street system, with its components organized into object classes which are the shape sets of algebras used by a generation module to generate street network representations that can be assessed by a GIS platform.

title Grammars of designs and grammars for designing - grammar-based patterns for urban design
source T. Tidafi and T. Dorta (eds) Joining Languages, Cultures and Visions: CAADFutures 2009, PUM, 2009
summary Analytical work has demonstrated the potential of shape grammars for capturing rules embedded in existing design styles, and generating designs within such styles that match given design contexts. However, the creation of grammars for new design styles, from exploratory rules to design synthesis, remains elusive. The combined use of patterns and discursive grammars is here proposed as a way of encoding the semantics behind recurrent urban design operations and enable the development of a tool to support the creation of new grammars. The idea is that by exploring the combination of generative patterns designers may arrive at new grammars.

title Monitoring urban design through generative design support tools: a generative grammar for Praia
source Proceedings of 15 Congresso da APDR, Cidade da Praia, Cabo Verde.
summary Abstract Urban planning and design has a considerable impact on the economic performance of cities and regions. It is a complex process that extends for a long period and involves many participants. The lack of integrated tools to support this process hampers the ability to maximize the response of plans to contextual conditions while using the least resources. This paper describes research that aims to develop such a tool, integrating formulation, generation, and evaluation capabilities. It is focused on the generation module which relies on the encoding of Urban Induction Patterns (UIP) using shape grammars. A grammar for the extension plan of the city of Praia is presented as one of the case studies used to support UIP definition and illustrate its application. The paper also discusses how the proposed tool can be used for developing and monitoring urban plans.

title Structuring a Generative Model for Urban Design: Linking GIS to Shape Grammars
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2008.929
source Architecture in Computro [26th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-0-9541183-7-2] Antwerpen (Belgium) 17-20 September 2008, pp. 929-938
summary Urban Design processes need to adopt flexible and adaptive procedures to respond to the evolving demands of the contemporary city. To support such dynamic processes, a specific design methodology and a supporting tool are needed. This design methodology considers the development of a design system rather than a single design solution. It is based on patterns and shape grammars. The idea is to link the descriptions of each pattern to specific shape rules inducing the generation of formal solutions that satisfy the pattern. The methodology explores, from the urban designer point of view, the capacity of a shape grammar to codify and generate urban form (Duarte et al, 2007). This paper defines the ontology of urban entities to build on a GIS platform the topology describing the various components of the city structure. By choosing different sets of patterns the designer defines his vision for a specific context. The patterns are explicated into shape rules that encode the designer’s interpretation of the pattern, and operate on this ontology of urban entities generating solutions that satisfy the pattern’s concept. Some examples of the topological relations are shown.

title On the Discovery of Urban Typologies: Data Mining the Multi-dimensional Character of Neighbourhoods
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2009.269
source Computation: The New Realm of Architectural Design [27th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-0-9541183-8-9] Istanbul (Turkey) 16-19 September 2009, pp. 269-278
summary In sustainable urban development the first stage of the urban design process should consist of a pre-design phase where the context of the site is analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. In this paper we present a methodology for data mining an urban Geographic Information System (GIS) data set, consisting of three main phases: representation, analysis and description. The process reveals a series of block and street typologies at various levels of detail that highlight the different character of two neighbourhoods. This methodology is demanding in the preparation phase and requires a high level of GIS and statistics expertise in the analysis phase. However, it successfully addresses the complex multi-scale and multi-level nature of cities in a systematic way, providing a tool for systematic profiling of neighbourhoods, which is site and problem specific.

source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 561-565
summary This paper describes a design experiment of a reception desk. Automated procedures were used in the process: a parametric design generated the form and connections. Computer models and physical prototypes were produced in order to develop construction details and preview results. We compared this exercise with the method used to design Aviva Stadium in Dublin. It was possible to conclude that the use of a generative method along with automated procedures did not restrict creativity, allowing the quick exploration of multiple design alternatives.

source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 453-457
summary As a consequence of the emergence of models based on the notions of disequilibrium and uncertainty, cities have being seen as intrinsically complex nonlinear systems subject to sociospatial changes that occur, simutaneously, in many scales. The present paper analyzes three models to simulate urban segregation dynamics. Schelling’s model shows how can emerge unexpected highly segregated global patterns from local preferences to live close to each other. Epstein and Axtell’s model reveals its pedagogic role through the manipulation of specific parameters. Portugali’s model emphasizes the cognition and learning capabilities of agents to recognize patterns and change their behaviour accordingly.

summary From the complex perspective of modern information society, knowledge and digital culture, we have detected limitations and obsolescente levels of much of the university educational system. We consider that teaching and learning reflect a beta protoparadigm state in constant construction. We value new ideas within the limits of education, communication and transmedia aesthetics, which contribute to the visibility of innovative practices and transformations. We reflect about necessary changes in the current education, from the diversification and reinvention of the use of educational technologies to liquid infrastructures. Our intention is to contribute to the conceptual frameworks development to fit sustainable strategies and result transferences towards classroom practices known as learning ecosystems.

summary This study aims to better ascertain the influence that urbanistic parameters exert on the production of solar photovoltaic energy regarding different contexts in the city. Modifications implemented between the years of 2012 and 2016, especially on variables such as Maximum Lot Coverage, Floor Area Ratio, and Setbacks, have been evaluated through virtual models that cover areas in three different city districts. Amongst other implications, an increase in the area occupied by the buildings, as well as a decrease in the distance between them, occurred, causing more mutual shading and the loss of the photovoltaic potential associated with the building envelope.

summary Pedagogical tradition is to focus its curriculums in studies that encourage the students in mental mechanisms which are favorable to the acquisition of a thought supported in the visual language and in the workshop. Current information technologies have produced a displacement in the ways the young people know, operate and relate to the world. A definitively cognitive shift has been provoked from the traditional written semantic decoding to visual semantic decoding, different operational skills have acquired, and a shift of intersubjetive communications from the personal experiential space to the virtual space.
