summary In experimenting with digital processes for simulating the behavior of tension-active cable nets, a method was developed for creating informed geometries by utilizing computational meshes that carry properties of structure, space, and material. A spring-based particle system provided the dynamics to simulate the flow of tension force through the geometry. Particular functions were scripted to embed logics for fabrication and analysis of spatial parameters. This formulated a lightweight, reactive design tool for which multiple cable net morphologies could be quickly generated. This paper will describe the experiments in creating the method to generate such cable net morphologies, and discuss the potential application for this computational framework to apply to other architectural systems.

summary This paper presents strategies for the design of bending-active structures through the introduction of modern computational design methods, exploring their architectural potential through contemporary means of design, engineering and robotic manufacturing. As a case study the ICD/ITKE research pavilion’s information modeling process is depicted: how form-finding experiments guided the development of various models that synthesize data for design, simulation, analysis and fabrication. The paper explains the integration of relevant material information into generative computational design processes and concludes by comparing the resultant data models with a scan of the built prototype.

title Mismatched Metaphor: User vs. System Model in Computer-Aided Drafting

summary We report findings from an extensive study of the users of a Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) system. Our observations suggest that the CAD system is used inefficiently, because users approach computer_aided drafting from a T-square metaphor reflecting their past experience with traditional drawing media. This prevents them from discovering and using effectively powerful system commands that have no equivalent in manual techniques. These findings suggest that we should rethink the ways in which CAD users are trained and manuals are written, and that we introduce CAD users to a more strategic use of CAD, particularly to a Detail/Aggregate/Manipulate (DAM) strategy that takes advantage of the compositional logic underlying a design.

Our tools not only shape our products, they shape our lives. Technology can influence everyday life and also affect the structure of our society. Architecture is an information-intensive profession, and throughout the world information-intensive activities are being changed by technology. The use of computer-aided information processing in planning and construction brings about a period of dramatic change, and the dimensions of technological change will be breathtaking. In the years to come, CAD will be an expanding field in the architectural office, but how long will it be before architecture is routinely produced on a CAD system? There appear to be three issues: (1) cost; (2) time; (3) quality.

summary This paper describes SEED-Layout, a module of SEED that supports the generation of schematic layouts of the functional units specified in an architectural program. SEED-Layout provides capabilities that allowdesigners to generate and evaluate rapidly different layout alternatives and versions; to explore the trade-offs involved; and to engage generally in an iterative, highly explorative design process. The resulting"design space" is complex, and the paper describes current efforts to provide designers with intelligent "navigation" aids that encourage them to explore interesting portions of this space without "getting lost."The paper concludes with a brief description of the current implementation and directions for future work.

title Simultaneous Form Generation and Performance Evaluation: A "Two-Way" Inference Approach

summary The conventional approach toward performance evaluation transforms given design attributes into performance indicators, and designers can improve these indicators only indirectly through the manipulation of design attributes. This paper outlines a contrasting "two-way " inference approach that allows designers to also manipulate the performance indicators directly and observe the resulting changes in design attributes. The advantages of this approach and its limitations are outlined. Methodological and implementation difficulties that arise from it are introduced, and possible solution strategies are described. A first prototype for a system that implements and demonstrates this approach is outlined. The larger debate about 'functionalism " touched by this approach, and its response to it, are briefly reviewed.

summary The present use of computers in the design studio focusses on automating routine tasks and on increasing drawing productivity. We assume that the impact of computers in design can be more profound and present a series of exercises for two contrasting design studios that build on our teaching and computing experience. 'Me first studio uses the computer as a design evaluation tool. The second studio demonstrates the use of computers for simple design generation tasks. In both cases, a very general and important educational objective is pursued, and computers become an integral part of the exercise.

summary In February 1990 the University of Kaiserslautern founded the new teaching and research department "Computer-Aided Design and Construction in Environmental Planning and Architecture". Unlike other German universities, the speciality of the new teaching department is in the common education of architects and environmental planners (including urban planning), so that a wide range of computer systems is at their disposal: computer-aided architectural design systems just as geographic information systems, picture processing or information systems to support urban planning etc. No other German university disposes of this kind of common education in a single teaching department. The following aspects will be discussed: (-) The general concept of education in three dimensions, viz. a dimension of application concerning architecture and urban planning, a dimension of technical features concerning computer applications and a dimension of critical judgement. (-) Contents of education and teaching concept including examples and students' resonance. summary A procedure is described which generates dissections of rectangles into rectangular components in order to obtain solutions to space-allocation problems which are restricted through topological and dimensional constraints. Solutions are generated in two steps: step 1 determines basic geometric properties of the arrangements to be produced, and step 2 computes the dimensions of the spaces in such an arrangement. Both steps are based on `wall representations' of the solutions. These representations allow geometric relations and operations to be transformed into relations and operations defined on character strings. They furthermore allow the (possibly infinite) set of solutions to be systematically searched for a finite set of `principal options'. summary Several computer programs that enumerate rectangular dissections as solutions to certain layout problems have established a distinct paradigm for dealing with the crucial theoretical issues involved. The present paper suggests an extension of the paradigm to include `loosely-packed arrangements of rectangles,' which are of wider applicability in an architectural context. The paper introduces orthogonal structures to represent these arrangements and establishes the conditions of well-formedness for these structures. It presents a grammar to enumerate orthogonal structures and suggests that best use is made of the grammar if it is incorporated into a generative expert system, able to serve as a vehicle to discover, encode and utilize a broad range of constraints and criteria in the generation of layout alternatives

summary The present paper outlines a plan for the teaching of architectural composition with computer assistance.The approach is to introduce students to a series of architectural languages characterized by a vocabulary of elements and a grammar whose rules indicate how these elements can be placed in space. Exercises with each language include the analysis of precedents; the generation of forms using a given rule set; and follow-up studies with an expanded rule set. The paper introduces languages and exercises through illustrative examples. This architectural content can be taught in the traditional way. The use of computers is motivated by expectations which are stated, and some basic requirements for the needed software are listed. Work to develop this software has started.

summary The aim of this paper is to examine the role of the analogies in the parametric modeling, particularly as factor of induction of creativity in architecture design process. For this purpose two experiments are presented. In the first one the students tested the relationship involving parametric modeling in the Paracloud and Rhino, that resulted in physical models produced by laser cutter. In the second experiment the students produced algorithms in the Grasshopper, resulting in families of structures. The results allow us to affirm that the parametric modeling stimulates the creativity, therefore allow combining parameters that result in unexpected discoveries.

summary This article investigates modern unbuilt houses designed by Vilanova Artigas and Carlos Cascaldi in Sao Paulo. The results indicate peculiar indoors features of these residences. Starting from scanned original drawings it was possible to produce 3D geometric models, and the simulation of the materials appearance in the interior spaces of these houses. The programs of these six residences are organized in half-levels, ramps, double height, inner courtyard, zenithal lighting and structural solution defining architecture. The goal is to investigate through renderings and walkthroughs in animations how the architects defined the internal spaces, establishing connections and visual-spatial continuity between floors.
