summary Agent-oriented modelling is one of the simulation methods for emergent behavior of a complex system that could be considered for application of urban city structures. Using advanced script techniques, the behavior and evolution of structures in the bottom-up strategies for the development of environment could be simulated in architecture and urbanism as well. The paper presents a research subproject in the area of verifi cation of the processes of spatial and social interaction of the agents according to the logic of defined intrinsic rules of Swarm behavior in the simulation model of the selected area. The research builds mainly upon two selected requirements of the bottom-up strategy: the approach distances to places of interest and mutual standoff distances between urban elements.

title Sense of Place in Virtual Heritage Environment: A Review

summary The use of computer technology is becoming a necessity to many organizations particularly as a means of representation and visualization. In the context of culture and heritage it is often developed in the form of virtual heritage. This is due to the fact that some of these intangible values are faded or even lost in museums they are placed, or buried in its physical remains and ruins. The concept of portraying the richness of sense of place via the use of virtual reality (VR) technology is seen to be of great potential to give value to the heritage sites. Thus, VR allows a unique representation of the intangible heritage elements while evoking the user’s senses, emotions, memories, meanings and interpretations, though these are arguably complex to accomplish. This paper reviews literatures on factors that influence the character of place and sense of place, and the use of VR technology and virtual world design to suggest presence for virtual heritage development.

The team work is interdisciplinary and it is composed by designers, sustainable and inmotics specialist. They all verified the proposal's structure, sustainability and micro electricity.  It is inclusive, attends the needs of all kind of users and answers to the socio-economic features of the milieu.

summary The paper describes an ongoing cooperation of architecture students with museum educational services and visually impaired persons. The project aims at conveying non-haptic art like paintings or graphics in public exhibitions to visually impaired people (blind or partially sighted). The concept combines rapid prototyping technologies with art interpretation and strategies for transporting visual information by haptic expressions. To reach this goal the students produce small and haptic explorable exhibits of the paintings by using rapid prototyping technologies and manufacture hand-outs, which can be touched by the blind people during guided tours at the exhibition.

summary We canvas issues in using neural imaging via EEG to map human responses to spaces. We describe the technology, some experiments by others relevant to architecture, and two of our own studies. One involves testing EEG as a supplement to user preference studies of urban typologies. The second involves recording the movement and affective (emotional) states of a pedestrian while moving through open spaces in Edinburgh. We produce map overlays of several such walkers as a method of mapping responses to urban spaces.

summary This paper offers an initial and ongoing investigation into the research area of Virtual City Models (VCMs). It builds upon previous research carried out by the VirtualNewcastleGateshead (VNG) team by providing an overview of VCMs multifunctions and emerging issues but specifi cally investigating the obsolescence factors and obsolescence-prevention strategies. This paper is part of a PhD research and provides a preliminary exploration of the issues described above. The study will conclude by identifying the progress of VNG thus far and the strategies employed by the VNG team to tackle the obsolescence factors identifi ed in this paper.

title Potential Use of Structural Layout Optimization at the Conceptual Design Stage

summary Despite recent developments in computer-aided design in architecture, both in terms of form generation techniques and performance-based design tools, there still appears to be polarization between the ‘visual’ and the ‘technical’ elements of design. Two causes of this are discussed: long-standing tradition within the discipline and perception of design as primarily a visual exercise. Structural layout optimization is a technique which enables automatic identification of optimal arrangements of structural elements in frames. As the technique appears to have the potential to help reduce the polarization between the visual and the technical elements of design, it can be considered as an ‘integrative’ form generation tool. Applications of the technique are considered via three design examples, demonstrating both its potential and areas where refinement is required before it is suitable for application in practice.

summary The paper is a position paper, not a report about a research project. It concerns the paradigm-shift that is taking place in the CAAD software and its implications for the business of architecture and more importantly, for the education of future members of the profession. Twenty years ago the use of CAAD software as a replacement for hand drafting was starting. Since then the transformation is complete: hardly a final project in the universities is drawn by hand. Currently, we are witnessing a second paradigm shift and its name is BIM. The meaning of BIM is rooted in two significant differences to current CAAD software and this will have implications for teaching and practicing architecture. The first difference is the way the software structures information in the CAAD file. The standard way to save CAAD information was to organise simple geometric objects according to membership in groups and to sort them according to a layer-metaphor, which primarily controlled the visibility of the geometric elements. Three-dimensional modelling is/was nothing more than the same structure with a more complex geometry. BIM software changes this structure by storing classes of geometries and then to store the specific values of individual geometries according to factors that can be determined by external or internal logical factors. The implication for architects is that we have the chance to be the people in control of the building information model, so long as we invest the time and energy to fully understand what is happening to the building information during the planning process. If we ignore this, the real danger exists that the last control of the building’s final configuration will be usurped. As educators we are currently teaching students that will be leaving the schools in 2012 and beyond. By then, the paradigm-shift will be in full motion and so it behoves us to consider which skill sets we want the next generation of architects to possess. This means not just teaching students about how to use particular BIM software or how to program a certain parametric/genetic algorithm in a form-finding process. We need to teach our students to take the leadership in building information management and that means understanding and controlling how the building information flows, how the methodologies that are used by the consulting engineers affect our building models, and knowing what kind of logical inconsistencies (internal or external) can threaten the design intention.

summary This paper questions the representational logics of a new class of digital-material practices incorporating material performance. Presenting the concept of ‘textile logic’, the paper discusses how computational design tools that allow for a parametrisation of material behaviour are foregrounding the examination of structural principles that lie outside traditional compressive logic. By pointing to the structural thinking of Vladimir Shukhov, Buckminster Fuller and Robert Le Ricolais, as well as contemporary practitioners such as Cecil Balmond and Peter Testa the paper examines the precedents for incorporating tensile self-bracing as a structural principle and how textiles can become a model for architectural design. The paper presents the research by design enquiry ‘Shadow Play’ examining the involved traditions, methods and material practices of textile design and the here embedded systems of material specification can be advantageously ported to digital design.

summary The paper introduces the methodology related to the topic of citizen-driven urban design and revises the idea of on-site participation of end-users, which could prospectively lead to customisation of architectural and urban space in a full-scale. The research in the first phase addresses the engagement of information technologies used for idea sketching in participatory design workshop related to local urban issues in the city of Chur in Switzerland by means of the Skity tool, the sketching on-line platform running on all devices. Skity allows user, which can be individual citizens or a community, to sketch, build, and adapt their ideas for the improvement of an urban locality. The participant is the expert of the locality because he or she lives in this place every day. The content of this paper is focused on the participatory design research project conducted as a study at the ETH Zürich and the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft HTW in Chur in collaboration with Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore, mainly concentrated on the first step of the methodological approach introduced here.

summary A city, defined as a unity of inhabitants with their environment and showing self-creating and self-maintaining properties, can be considered as an autopoietic system if we take into account its bottom-up processes with unpredictable behaviour of its components. Such a property can lead to self-creation of urban patterns. These processes are studied in well-known vernacular architectures and informal settlements around the world and they are able to adapt according to various conditions and forces. The main research objective is to establish a computational design-modelling framework for modelling autopoietic intricate characteristics of a city based on an adaptability, self-maintenance and self-generation of urban patterns with adequate visual representation.The paper introduces a modelling methodology that allows to combine planning tasks with inhabitants' interaction and data sources by using an interchange framework to model more complex urban dynamics. The research yields preliminary results tested in a simulation model of a redevelopment of Tanjong Pagar Waterfront, the container terminal in the city of Singapore being transformed into a new future centre as a conducted case study.

summary The paper theorises and elaborates the idea of crowd-driven assemblies for flexible and adaptive constructions utilising automatic technologies and participatory activities within the context of twenty-first century cities. As economic and technological movements and shifts in society and cultures are present and ongoing, the building technology needs to incorporate human inputs following the aspects of customisation to build adaptive architectural and urban scenarios based on immediate decisions made according to local conditions or specific spatial demands. In particular, the paper focuses on large-scale prototyping for urban applications along with on-site interactions between humans and automatic building technologies to create on-demand spatial scenarios. It discusses the current precedents in research and practice and speculates future directions to be taken in creation, development or customisation of contemporary and future cities based on participatory and crowd-driven building activities. summary The paper theoretically elaborates the idea of individual users' customisation activities to create and configure responsive spatial scenarios by means of reconfigurable interactive adaptive assemblies. It reflects Gordon Pask's concept of human and device interaction based on its unpredictable notion speculating a potential to be enhanced by artificial intelligence learning approach of an assembly linked with human activator's participative inputs. Such a link of artificial intelligence, human agency and interactive assembly capable to generate its own spatial configurations by itself and users' stimuli may lead to a new understanding of humans' role in the creation of spatial scenarios. The occupants take the prime role in the evolution of spatial conditions in this respect. The paper aims to position an interaction between the human agents and artificial devices as a participatory and responsive design act to facilitate creative potential of participants as unique individuals without pre-specified or pre-programmed goal set by the designer. Such an approach will pave a way towards true autonomy of responsive built environments, determined by an individual human agent and behaviour of the spatial assemblies to create authentic responsive built forms in a digital and physical space.

summary The MSc Bio-Digital Architecture at Kent School of Architecture & Planning is a post-professional program developing a specialist approach to architectural thinking and design execution, encouraging students to engage with broader theoretical debates that are pertinent to contemporary practice. The program emphasizes the conundrum of “what is space” and provokes students to explore the concept of space and the problem of configuring space in architecture. Taking an interdisciplinary approach (spanning theoretical biology, social science, systems theory, cybernetics, semiotics and computation) students are expected to establish ways and means of rethinking and designing architectural space. In the current situation, where the integrity and primary role of architecture is seriously challenged by specialized research and partial interpretations of the discipline, there is a growing need to articulate a body of knowledge and understanding capable of reconciling the fragmented areas of knowledge within the given reality of current contemporary architectural practice. The aim of the course is to establish a comprehensive understanding of architecture rooted in the humanities, with an emphasis on the digital turn in architectural discourse and theory, to integrate knowledge of specialized disciplines into a unified and meaningful whole. The integrative nature of the student investigation’s opens the possibility to come to terms with the situational structure of architecture and can serve at the same time as a foundation for a more fully developed human ecology.

summary In this paper, we present a method for generating fast conceptual urban design prototypes. We synthesize spatial configurations for street networks, parcels and building volumes. Therefore, we address the problem of implementing custom data structures for these configurations and how the generation process can be controlled and parameterized. We exemplify our method by the development of new components for Grasshopper/Rhino3D and their application in the scope of selected case studies. By means of these components, we show use case applications of the synthesis algorithms. In the conclusion, we reflect on the advantages of being able to generate fast urban design prototypes, but we also discuss the disadvantages of the concept and the usage of Grasshopper as a user interface.

summary Virtual reality creates an effective communication platform with a high degree of perception and exploration, increasing the benefits of VR applied functions.This research paper reports a virtual reality function of using the micro-simulation editor-player with XML file in the virtual reality environment.The details of the function are presented.The function aiming at combining visual and textual data in VR model visualisation, was developed by the researcher, and was included in the micro-simulation plug-in of a virtual reality program,VR Studio version 6, previously known as UC-Win/Road, by the program developers.The research paper discusses the computer simulation techniques and uses in virtual reality in general.The research paper proceeds to introduce a case study of construction process visualization in the virtual reality environment, in which the newly developed function is utilized to simultaneously visualise data reports related to the stages of VR model visualisation.The concluding remarks accentuate this micro-simulation function with its potential uses in different fields.

summary This paper explores the interaction and different types of representations enacted in a BIM-enabled environment that involves interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary collaboration among teams of designers in an architectural praxis context. By means of an ethnographic study conducted over the course of an architectural project from schematic design to construction documents, including five disciplines and twenty subjects, genres of communication interfaces are identified between BIM-authoring tools, sketching interfaces and domain specific analysis tools, and explored within the realm of distributed cognition. Implications in architectural practice and education are then discussed.

Smart Geometry provides advanced design concepts and increases alternative variations. Parametric design softwares also add more rules and relations on the design process. Obviously, the Islamic module and proportions are used as design generators that result in extracting a number of alternatives easily in a little time. Generative Components (GC) is the parametric software used to achieve the desired objectives of this research.

summary Ecological and environmental issues are playing an important and larger role in corporate and manufacturing strategies. For complete creative design process, buildings require both for construction and manufacturing, due to their comparatively long life cycle for maintenance, significant raw material and energy resources. Thinking in terms of product life cycles is one of the challenges facing manufacturers today. “Life Cycle Management” (LCM) considers the product life cycle as a whole and optimizes the interaction of product design, construction, manufacturing and life cycle activities. The goal of this approach is to protect resources and maximize the effectiveness during usage by means of Life Cycle Assessment, Product Data Management, Technical Support and last but not least by Life Cycle Costing. In this paper the environmental consciousness issues pertaining to design, construction, manufacturing and operations management are presented through computer intelligent technologies of this 21century. So, this paper shows the existing approaches of LCM and discusses their visions and further development.

summary Physical Digitality is the second volume of the conference proceedings of the 30th eCAADe conference, held from 12-14 september 2012 in Prague at the Faculty of Architecture of Czech Technical University in Prague. The companion volume is called Digital Physicality. Together, both volumes contain 154 papers that were submitted to this conference. Digitality is the condition of living in a world where ubiquitous information and communication technology is embedded in the physical world. Although it is possible to point out what is “digital” and what is “real,” the distinction has become pointless, and it has no more explanatory power for our environment, buildings, and behaviour. Material objects are invested with communication possibilities, teams are communicating even when not together, and buildings can sense and respond to the environment, each other, and to inhabitants. Digital is no longer an add-on, extra, or separate software. Reality is partly digital and partly physical. The implication of this condition is not clear however, and it is necessary to investigate its potential. New strategies are necessary that acknowledge the synergetic qualities of the physical and the digital. This is not limited to our designs but it also infl uences the process, methods, and what or how we teach. The subdivision of papers in these volumes follow the distinction made in the conference theme. The papers in Physical Digitality have their orientation mainly in the physical realm, and reach towards the digital part. It has to be granted that this distinction is rather crude, because working from two extremes (digital versus physical) tends to ignore the arguably most interesting middle ground.
