summary During a design process, few methods allow designers to evaluate if and how the future building will match and affect its intended use and its intended users. Computer simulation techniques have focused on prediction of human behavior in built environments in order to overcome this lack; nevertheless, their applications are limited to representation of specifi c behavioral aspects while a reliable representation of building response to actual use is still missing. Based on current developments in the video game industry, the research described here aims to establish a new approach to simulating human behavior in buildings, centered on a clear definition of use scenarios as specific structures of active entities called Events. They provide information about occurrences happening during the use process in terms of Actors involved, Activities performed and Space where the event takes place. Equipped with AI engines, events control and coordinate the actors’ behavior during the simulation, representing their interaction, cooperation and collaboration.

summary In our times, in a complex and universal village where problems are intertwined and pervasive beyond our imagination, we need new approaches to deal with them – appropriately. In a previous work we highlighted the importance to reason ontologies: a ‘world’ f.i. a building – as a mental image – is not a Linnaeus’s classifi cation (structured set of entities) but a system (goals oriented set of classes) able to reasoning upon selectively chosen entities belonging to different Realms (ontology universes) (Fioravanti et al., 2011a). The general aim of our research– to be an effective aid to design – is to simulate wo/man as designer and user of designed spaces, hence how mental skill can be computably included in new tools able to tackle these problems. This paper is focused on the fi rst role: how actor-designers approach design problems and how the inference mechanism can help them and affect the design process. A ‘Building Object’ - the dual system of Spaces and Technology elements – is inferred in several ways according to different goals and the inference mechanism can, simulating human mental shortcuts, optimize thinking.

summary The behavior of a human being in a building, its activities, its interactions with it and with other people are certainly a highly complex phenomenon extremely hard to predict and evaluate. At the same time, the response of a built environment to future users’ needs is one of the key factors of its performance. The Agent-based Modeling paradigm is considered potentially the best way to represent human behavior but, in the building design field, its experiences are limited to representation of partial aspects of human behavior in discrete events. Currently, a more "extended" representation of human behavior able to offer an overview of the human activities related to the building ‘functioning’, is missing,. This lack is due to the complexity of interaction among users and built environment, and to the extensive knowledge, provided by different disciplines, needed to reliably represent it. The proposed research focuses on the construction of a general representation template of user-actor, easy to implement and flexible enough to structure the large amount of data affecting human behavior. The development of the ontology-based template shown in this paper can lead to a user-agent’s entity whose parameters and behavioral rules can encode and represent several ‘aspects’ of real users and their interactions with the other entities (building components, furniture, other people) in a built environment.

summary During building design processes, designers have to predict and evaluate future building performances oriented to its intended use and users. Current BIM and IFC technologies support designers allowing data exchange and information interoperability but, since their lack in semantics, they don’t provide any knowledge implementation about how the designed building will be actually used and how people will interact with it. The research described in this paper aims to overcome this shortcoming by developing a new modelling approach, oriented to representation and management of knowledge related to future building use and users. The proposed representation model is based on an already accepted ontology-based structure and will make this large amount of knowledge accessible and usable by designers during architectural design processes, in order to enhance the final quality of the design product.

summary In this paper, we propose a new approach to simulating users’ behavior in yet un-built buildings. For this purpose, we have developed a model that connects two different representations: a formal representation of the building use, by means of a method borrowed from Business Process Modeling and Notation (BPMN) approach; and a game-engine based 3D virtual environment, where this process is effectively simulated and integrated with some autonomous behaviour of users/agents. The model has been applied to two test cases, where the activities of doctors, nurses, patients, and visitors in different hospitals were tracked, simulated, and reviewed by medical professionals for validation.

summary Predicting future users’ behaviour and their activities in a building is a highly complex task that designers have to face during the design process. Despite its importance, few methods exist that can predict and help evaluate this type of building performance during the design process itself. Simulative approaches are gradually overcoming this shortcoming, but at present their application is limited to the representation of specific occurrences and behavioural performance aspects, such as emergency egress. Based on current developments in the video game industry, our research aims to establish a new approach to human behaviour simulation in built environments, based on a clear and reliable representation of the use processes occurring in a building. At its core is simulation based on the notion of events, defined as active entities on their own, comprised of space, people, and activities. These events entities are structured into collections called narratives, which represent and allow the simulation of the step-by-step performing of activities by users in a built environment.

summary The introduction of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) approach has facilitated the management process of documents produced by different kinds of professionals involved in the design and/or renovation of a building, through identification and subsequent management of geometrical interferences (Clash Detection). The methodology of this research proposes a tool to support Clash Detection, introducing the logical-operative dimension, that may occur with the presence of a construction site within a hospital structure, through the integration of a BIM model within a Game Engine environment, to preserve the continuity of daily hospital activities and trying to reduce negative impacts, times and costs due to construction activities.

summary The use of meta-design tools to support the early stages of the design process is widely proven in literature. Among these tools, the adjacency matrix and the bubble diagram provided the various professionals involved - not only in the AEC sector - with some useful information mainly regarding the connection types between spaces and the sizing of their dimensions. With the evolution of design and the change of architectural aims (e.g. sustainability, refurbishment), it is not fruitful, especially related to complex buildings (e.g. hospital, airport), to manage spaces and their connections through the traditional Adjacency Matrix and its dual (Bubble Diagram). These tools, used as they were originally designed, do not consider other characteristics but basic topological ones and are still linked to 2D geometry. For this reason, this research aims to increase the unexplored design potential of these tools considering huge advances in building object representation and links with knowledge. The first research steps led to a 3D analysis capable of providing knowledge on the connections and adjacencies between spaces and its environments located on different floors. Therefore, we decided to define further goals, breaking limits of the "adjacency" concept for a more extendable and general concept of "relation" between spaces and environments.

summary Along with the regeneration of complex cultural sites, a growing awareness regarding the essential role of ICT tools and technologies has emerged from past knowledge, research and intervention for future valorisation actions. However, within these processes, the artefact regeneration phase struggles to consider some peculiar aspects related to the material and immaterial evidence and uncertainties. Such a unique field can be supported by standard ontology conceptual formalism. Nevertheless, as it frequently occurs, it may not be enough to handle uncertain information, requiring the introduction of advanced tools for a deeper understanding and a better structure definition to manage those large sets of heterogeneous knowledge. A promising approach to handle uncertainty and to address this issue is the integration of fuzzy logic with usual technologies and semantic tools. In fact, the fuzzy set theory aims to describe indefinite concepts through a generalised notion of set. This paper aims to explore the possibility of a system based on fuzzy ontologies to manage the real complex semantics during heritage investigation and conservation processes. The expected outcome is to improve both the represented knowledge and to automatize the comprehension, recognition and valorisation of these assets by a reasoning system on ontologies.

summary Digital information systems are widely used for heritage documentation and management activities. The creation of 3D models based on different survey techniques, like photogrammetry and laser scanning, allows a fast collection of the studied assets in the form of geometry dimensions and point clouds. However, the raw geometric information and the mesh/solid converted data need to be associated with semantic annotation, defined as external and formalized knowledge of the architectural artifact. This paper proposes a workflow using Semantic Web-related technologies to support point cloud segmentation activity of archaeological artifacts. The suggested approach is based on analyzing and integrating different layers of information through three main phases: the digital acquisition phase, the geometry creation phase, and the semantic enrichment phase. The defined framework is then applied to the archaeological case study of Tivoli to highlight how the workflow can significantly improve the quality and effectiveness of data segmentation in the existing heritage documentation processes by providing a solid basis for the generation of detailed and semantically enriched geometric information models. Finally, the creation of this system prototype will give overall support to aid the interpretations and value recognition of heritage sites thanks to the capability of representing and managing the categories (in Aristotle’s sense) and the uniqueness of concepts applied to this peculiar and paradigmatic case study.

summary In a built heritage process, meant as a structured system of activities aimed at the investigation, preservation, and management of architectural heritage, any task accomplished by the several actors involved in it is deeply influenced by the way the knowledge is represented and shared. In the current heritage practice, knowledge representation and management have shown several limitations due to the difficulty of dealing with large amount of extremely heterogeneous data. On this basis, this research aims at extending semantic web approaches and technologies to architectural heritage knowledge management in order to provide an integrated and multidisciplinary representation of the artifact and of the knowledge necessary to support any decision or any intervention and management activity. To this purpose, an ontology-based system, representing the knowledge related to the artifact and its contexts, has been developed through the formalization of domain-specific entities and relationships between them.

summary This paper presents a system for simulating human behaviour in built heritage artefacts aimed at supporting the decision-making processes for their possible re-use.Its goal is to predict the mutual influence between the occupancy phenomena and the architectural heritage environment, in order to optimise the balance between efficiency requirements of spaces and preservation needs of the heritage artefact. The proposed system is based on the integration of a BIM environment with a game engine that allows the modelling of the built environment and the simulation of its use phenomena at the same time. A central role in the systems is played by the distribution of Artificial Intelligence among Virtual Users, process entities (the activities) and the building components, ensuring the coherent representation of the use processes and the direct measurement of their impact on the artefact.

summary This research investigates the development of a new modelling and simulation approach for building design - defined as Agent-Based Building Modelling - that moves from the current object-oriented representation (such as in BIM) to an agent-based one. In the proposed approach, the representation domain is extended in order to include users and hosted activities, and the static modelling of the building is integrated with the dynamic simulation of its functioning. For this purpose, this paper presents a general template of the agent that ensures homogeneity of formalisation of the different typologies of entities (building components, spaces, V-Users, activities) and support the virtual simulation of the use process.

summary In BIM processes, the concept of Common Data Environment - CDE - has often been depicted as a key element for successful collaboration and information sharing among different actors but, in current practice, acts as a mere documentation repository ineffective for true collaborative purposes. Therefore, the idea of CDE seems to be overrated on the one hand and unexploited on the other, while effective collaboration is still far from being decisively supported. To overcome this lack, the present research focuses on the definition of a new generation of CDEs, enhanced with an information level for knowledge integration provided by different information carriers such as models and datasets. The paper discusses its development through a graph database platform and dedicated methodologies for data retrieval and query, to verify coherence and consistency of information among different models.

summary Although HBIM is nowadays a common practice in processes and activities aimed at the investigation, documentation and conservation of architectural heritage, some doubts are emerging regarding its capabilities of fulfilling architectural heritage representation and semantics requirements. In this context, this work presents Open-ArcH, a digital approach for architectural heritage representation that relies on the integration of HBIM methodology with a knowledge base developed by means of graph databases, with two major objectives: 1) it supports the formalization of the complex semantics that it is necessary for a full comprehension of the artefact, currently poorly managed by HBIM application, and 2) the openness and flexibility ensured by the graph database technology allow for its adoption in heritage investigation and conservation processes by the different actors involved, providing them with the capability of collaborating to the construction of the knowledge base of the artefact.

title A simulation model for building use re-thinking after the COVID-19 emergency

summary COVID-19 infection is forcing designers and building managers in re-thinking the use and experience of architectural spaces, as well as the interactions within the people in it. To support this difficult task, this research is working on a simulation model, based on agent-based modeling, able to predict the use phenomena of buildings and provided quantitative and qualitative feedback regarding the impact of re-defined use processes to COVID-19 infection risk. The derived platform is particularly designed to support the testing of visiting scenarios in museums and galleries, potentially helping them in their re-opening phases.

summary This paper presents the development of SIENA - Space Identity Evaluation aNd Assignment - based on duck typing for automatic recognition and semantic enrichment of the architectural spaces. This method is known in computer science as a form of abductive reasoning and leverages on the observable features of an object in order to establish its recognition. As result, the spatial identity is object-oriented and can be dynamically defined. In this research, the duck typing approach has been achieved with the support of BIM methodology and graph database. The former allows information-based modeling of an architectural project while the latter makes possible the representation of the knowledge along with their relationships. Consequently, this research may have many possible applications, especially as a valid design support tool in the very first design stages. Furthermore, an efficient spatial identity detection could contribute to the development of further human-machine interactions and therefore a possible optimization of the design process.
