The use of a game is particularly useful as it makes it possible to simplify the complex terms of the problem and, through the game itself, makes it easier to study knowledge engineering tools, communication protocols and the areas of an ICT implementation of a general model of collaborative design. In the following several characteristics of the game are given (also with reference to other games) such as; participating actors (Wix 1997), the “pieces” (construction components) used, the modular space employed, the PDWs/SDW dialectics, the screenshot of the interface prototype, the score.

summary The present paper is focused on exploring a new paradigm in architectural design process that should raise the bar for a mutual collaboration between humans and digital assistants, able to face challenging problems of XXI century. Such a collaboration will aid design process freeing designer from middle level reasoning tasks, so they could focus on exploring - on the fly - design alternatives at a higher abstraction layer of knowledge. Such an assistant should explore and instantiate as much as possible knowledge structures and their inferences thanks to an extensive use of defaults, demons and agents, combined with its power and ubiquity so that they will be able to mimic behaviour of architectural design human experts. It aims other than to deal with data (1st layer) and simple reasoning tools (2nd layer) to automate design exploring consequences and side effects of design decisions and comparing goals (3rd layer). This assistant will speed up the evaluation of fresh design solutions, will suggest solutions by means of generative systems and will be able of a digital creativity.

summary Traditional design paradigms take into account phases as the process were subdivided rigidly in boxes to which pertain specific building entities, actors and LODs. In reality the process of design, a building f.i., it is not so much organized in series, nor designers deal with just a specific LOD. The process is intertwined and actors mix various type entities with different accuracy. To manage these problems, we need a new paradigm and new tools able to take immediately into account satisfied/unsatisfied constraints, to trig on consequences of choices made as far as it is possible and to link fluently and bidirectionally a 2nd layer of building abstraction (BIM) with a 3rd one of knowledge abstraction. An on-the-fly link has been established between BIM and a swarm of agent-based simulations.

summary Architecture, nowadays, is an even more demanding activity in which complexity is the keyword: complex forms, complex functions and complex structures require sophisticated facilities and components, for example, ‘The Cloud’ of D. and M. Fuksas in Rome. These complexities can give rise to numerous risks, among which fire is frequently a central problem. The fire safety norms do not involve an approach integrated with other instruments or building model (BIM), but provide a list of information and constraints. These codes are now shifting away from a prescriptive-based towards a performance-based method due to recent progress in fire safety engineering. Following this approach, a case study simulation of a multi-purpose centre was carried out in Tivoli, near Rome. This simulation allowed greater freedom in architectural composition, a lower risk to people, a larger number of material and building components used and higher safety standards to be achieved. The model is based on the FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) language, a simulation code for low-speed flows, focused on smoke, particle and heat transport by fire.

summary Architectural design is a purpose-oriented collective process defined in time, split up into phases, carried out directly or indirectly by numerous professional profiles and characterized by the co-presence of numerous disciplines and specialist skills. The efficiency of a shared design among multiple designers depends on how much the actor’s semantics of the used terms are interpreted correctly by all the other actors involved in the design process without misunderstandings. The chosen way to find an answer to these questions is the development of a Collaborative Architectural Design system based on Knowledge formalized by Ontologies. An ontology has been implemented using three different approaches to define an entity based on Lisp, Protégé and Altova.

summary To help architects in real life work it is needed to clarify what a building is from their point of view. Till now we have seen that building design aid programs are mainly conceived from an “external” perspective, that of computer scientists. Difficulties related to architectural design support programs result from: an insufficient overall model of the building; an inadequate formalization of information; an underestimated complexity inherent in the design process. To overcome these difficulties we introduce a ‘systemic’ building model that takes into account discipline-specific goals by means of relation structures to relate entities of domains and ontologies to formalize knowledge.

summary This paper describes an iterative design process to create an anthropomorphic end-effector for a collaborative robot in construction. The focus is on improving the palm or juncture of the handlike end effector. Anthropomorphic end effectors typically have stiff, rigid palms that only provide support to the fingers rather than being an active part of the end effector. This research contributes to new knowledge through a detailed investigation of the role the palm has in improving the grip strength and control. This control and strength is essential for operating tools commonly used on construction sites. Consequently, the paper asks the question and investigates if a flexible palm could provide added support and grip for end effectors needed for complex processes.Via an action-based research method, the paper uses soft robotic techniques to experiment with a range of pneumatic iterative solutions to create a functioning palm, inspired by the human hand. The resulting end effector will aim to mimic the behaviours of the human hand.This investigation, its proposed hypothesis, methodology, implications, significance and evaluation are presented in the paper.

summary This paper describes the design and development of anthropomorphic end effectors for collaborative robots for use in the construction industry. The research focuses on the form and function of the end effectors including an in-depth investigation of soft robotic techniques and sensor technologies. There is critical and legislative demand for automation in construction to meet increasing labour shortages, a growing population and ensure safe work environments. In an attempt to address these demands industry originally looked to replace human labour, however, in the last 5 years, the focus has shifted to human-machine collaboration, particularly collaborative robots. To ensure safety and increase productivity, end effectors also need to be well designed and collaborative. This research, its proposed hypothesis, methodology, implications, significance and evaluation are presented in the paper.

title Computation-Universal Voxel Automata as Material for Generative Design Education

summary This paper is a report on the educational application of a voxel automata system for massively parallel execution of computation-universal cellular units in the generative design field. The software, designed and co-developed by the author to enable developmental strategies in generative design - for example with respect to 3D design generation, semantic self-evaluation and self-replication - was applied in teaching at the School of Design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University to achieve two goals: to teach programming as part of the School’s Interactive Systems Design stream and to teach generative concepts at a theoretical, yet hands-on and highly intensive level. An introduction to the software, its development and its functions as well as a discussion of the teaching/learning experience is given, highlighting design educational aspects and student design work. The paper concludes with an analysis of how student approaches to generative concepts have been affected by the tool and how ideas and feedback from students have supported the ongoing development of the voxel automata system and its documentation.

Available textbooks related to algorithmic form generation, discussing algorithmic growth, artificial life, fi-actal images, emergent behaviour and the like have originated in the field of mathematics. This resource provides an abundance of examples and generative approaches but when adapted to design education, it poses great interdisciplinary challenges which are addressed in this paper. Experiences in generative design teaching are presented, focusing on the relation between algorithmic reproduction of nature (as emphasized by authors in the mathematical field) and innovation (as commonly emphasized in design education). This discussion leads to a derivation of pedagogic suggestions as early steps on the way towards theories and curricula of generative design teaching, addressed to curriculum planners, generative design teachers as well as novices of the field such as undergraduate students.

summary In this paper we discuss recent developments in the ongoing implementation of a toolkit for developmental generative design and form finding. We examine tissues of face-centered cubically close-packed voxel cells and topologically related structures for the possibility of 3D data conversion and of rapid prototyping applications. summary In this paper, we present a procedure to derive algebraic parameters from geometrically described truncated hyperbolic paraboloid surfaces. The procedure uses parametric modelling and optimisation to converge on close algebraic approximations of hyperbolic paraboloid geometry through a successive breakdown of vast search spaces. We illustrate this procedure with its application to the surfaces of the 1958 Philips Pavilion designed by Le Corbusier and Iannis Xenakis. This application yielded previously unavailable parametric data of this building in algebraic form. It highlights the power of the parametric design and optimisation toolkit, both in terms of automated search and epistemological enablement.

summary Electronic sensors, controllers, displays and actuators can significantly enhance the value of physical models as processes of use, interaction and transformation take center stage in various fields of design. These technologies allow the development of novel computer interfaces for new kinds of interaction with virtual models, and in the future they will allow new types of active building components and materials for automated construction and dynamic runtime adaptations of inhabitable environments. However, embedding programmed logic into physical objects seems to confront designers and model makers with a steep learning curve outside the domains of their traditional expertise. The variety of alternative technologies and development tools in this area has a particularly disorienting effect on novices. Some early experiences however suggest that mastery of this learning curve is easily within reach, given some basic introduction, guidance and support. It is the purpose of this paper to provide designers with a starting point for explorations into this area, to give orientation and to demonstrate some possible development approaches and results.
