summary This paper discusses the potential offered by Virtual Reality (VR) and accompanied gesture-based devices as tools for architectural design and simulation. This is done by outlining a workflow and by demonstrating an experimental study for the development of an interactive, flexible and parametric shading device consisting of bending-active wooden strips. More specifically, the project focuses on the relationship between physical inputs acquisition and virtual experience of two users in space. Through the use of Kinect and VR headset, the first user is responsible to check and control the shading system regarding the shape and sun direction. The aim is to create configurations that serves his/her shading needs by moving his/her hand in order to hide the sun in a game like procedure until satisfactory shading is acquired. The second user, through the use of a leap motion sensor and a projection screen, is able to check and control the efficiency of structure in terms of bending behavior and environmental impact, also in a loop of possibilities. Using the thump and pointer fingers he/she controls the bending behavior by watching a screen that shows in different colours the bending factor of each element. At the same time, the distance between his/her hands controls the number of elements in order to achieve the optimal rate between material consumption and shading. The two users can intervene sequentially or concurrently during the process. A series of investigations related to shading rate and bending behavior as well as minimum material consumption leading to lower environmental impact are conducted. This attempts to offer useful conclusions as regard the potential application of immersive VR technology as mechanism for decision-making in architecture and simulation but also in the fabrication of the suggested shading device.

summary Latest advances in digital architectural design enable applications of computation and fabrication strategies for the development of adaptive mechanisms. Adaptive design processes, influenced by environmental and human related conditions, are only developed partially with regard to the design, fabrication, and multi-objective performance based context. The current paper proposes an adaptive design process that investigates the design of a kinetic structure emphasizing material behaviour, embedded technology and computation. In parallel, it allows design proposals to adapt or transform with regard to geometrical configuration and structural behaviour according to external and internal influences. An adaptive hybrid structure is developed at digital and physical prototype level, where its behaviour is examined in real time under the influence of physical conditions. The development is based on a holistic design approach driven by environmental and human activity related conditions, while focusing on the application of elastic materials and embedded technology.

summary In recent years a number of techniques based on the subdivision principle have been suggested for detecting the curves resulting from the intersection of two parametrically defined surface patches. Silhouette curves of surfaces can also be detected using analogous techniques. Usually the output is a set of pixels or line segments which form the complete curve, though not necessarily in an ordered manner. This paper presents data structures for maintaining the result of subdivision, and algorithms for tracing the curves in a continuous fashion. Using a few iterations of the Newton-Raphson technique the curve points may be refined to any required precision. For each point on the curve the nonlinear equations are chosen by looking at the local topological nature of the curve so as to guarantee convergence of the Newton-Raphson technique in one or two iterations

summary The paper investigates the design loop of parametrically creating an architectural shape based on the analysis of the specific wind situation of the design site, continuously testing the design's performance in the wind using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and subsequently adjusting the formed architectural shape based on the wind simulations' results. An optimal shape for the determined behavior in the wind is sought in this iterative process. The design strategy is being developed as an attempt to create a sustainable and effective alternative design approach for the changing future environment. The complexity of the process, particularly the need of the repetitive wind tunnel adjustment for every new design situation, or the need of external post-processing software for displaying the wind results of every new architectural shape remains a disadvantage in the search for an optimal architectural solution.

summary This paper discusses the development of a bio-inspired compliant mechanism for architectural applications and explains the methodology of investigating movements found in nature. This includes the investigation of biological compliant mechanisms, abstraction, and technical applications using computational tools such as finite element analysis (FEA). To demonstrate the possibilities for building envelopes of complex geometries, procedures are presented to translate and alter the disclosed principles to be applicable to complex architectural geometries. The development of the kinetic façade shading device flectofold, based on the biological role-model Aldrovanda vesiculosa, is used to demonstrate the process. The following paper shows results of FEA simulations of kinetic curved-line folding mechanisms with pneumatic actuation and provides information about the relationship between varying geometric properties (e.g. curved-line fold radii) and multiple performance metrics, such as required actuation force and structural stability.

summary The current study explored different spatial training methods and investigated the sequence of processed-based mental simulation that was facilitated by various structures of external spatial representations, including 3D technology in Computer Aided-Architectural Design (CAAD), spatial cues, and/or technical languages. The goal was to better understand how these components fostered planning experiences and affected spatial ability acquisition framed as the formation of spatial mental models, for further developing spatial training environments fundamental to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, specifically for architecture education and cognition. Two experiments were conducted using a between-subjects design to examine the effects of spatial training methods on spatial ability performance. Across both studies learners improved in their spatial skills, specifically the learners in the 3D-augmented virtual environments over the 3D-direct physical manipulation conditions. This study is built upon the work in the fields of computer-user interface, visuospatial thinking and human learning.

summary The purpose of this work is the discussion of issues related to the use of interactive multimedia for the documentation of buildings and cities. These issues emerged from the analysis of the cities of Havana and Rio de Janeiro, as researched at PROURB, the Graduate Program of Urban Design of the School of Architecture and Urbanism, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Interactive multimedia applications have been developed through many years. Some areas presented mature works, other are still researching specific forms to employ the available resources of this new media. In this situation are the interpretations of buildings and cities, which still hasn't found a proper language for it's complexly and scale. Interactive multimedia has many resources which are adequate for buildings and cities' analysis and representation. Two questions may be considered crucial for the use of hyperdocuments in architecture and urban planning and design: the first allows us a glimpse of a technique which can document the bridge between the architectís space imagining and this space experienced by it's users. The second issue is the proximity between the role of the architect and those of the author of interactive multimedia.

summary Through the evaluation of advantages and limitations of 3D historic city models, this paper aims to analyze the contribution of those tools to the city history representation. One should overcome limitations such as incomplete information, impediments to acknowledge hypotheses representations, intense labor requirements or difficulties to encourage a historical reflection. We argue that creative systems that are carefully planned towards history’s thorough understanding are more effective than those applications which focus on the development of high quality images. Those issues are illustrated by the system prototype “Rio-H”, which presents an alternative to communicate the history of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The research on the relevance of the computer application can be carried out thanking to the establishment of a CAD laboratory as a supporting facility of the Department of Architecture which was established in 1999 through QUE Program (Quality Undergraduate Educative) granted by the World Bank in undergraduate program proposal selection in Indonesia. It can therefore be identified how well students can improve their talents and skills in design subject. The laboratory is used not only in educational activities, it is also used to develop the computer application in design especially 2D and 3D design and the perspective drawing presentation.

summary Computer Aided Architectural Design software is a necessary tool for the architectural design of a visible object or model. In residential development, an estimation of time/cost corresponding to the design is needed in order to complete its successful project. But available feasibility supporting tools usually lacks ability to share their information. To solve this limitation, this research proposes a design of Graphic User Interface (GUI) for collaborative financial feasibility through an architectural design process in housing project. The development of the GUI starts from collecting some information and requirement from National Housing Authority of Thailand. A heuristic decision making approach based on financial analysis are then designed for both design processes and feasibility processes of the project. Finally, design of the GUI is an integration of CAAD engines, design standards and financial feasibility analysis. Proposed GUI for collaborative financial feasibility is also tested and verified with some information from sample past projects of the National Housing Authority. From the experimental results, This GUI allows designers to improve the design of the project in real-time by inspecting the result of their design via the part of the architectural design-oriented GUI called myMonitoring and Scratch Pad. Together with planning, collaborative financial feasibility is focusing on the four main financial parameters which illustrated the possible chance of the project: Net Present Value (NPV), Benefit-Cost Ratio (B/C), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and Payback Period. The core system was developed on Java Technology such as JSP and Swing empowered by 3D game engine. In addition, “Virtools” as an authoring tool was applied to improve interactive 3D virtual environment and explore rapid online system prototyping.

summary Nowadays, artificial intelligence (AI) plays a vital role in developing future trends and technology. Artificial intelligence approaches and applications have been developed over several decades to achieve AI systems for architectural creation to replace architectural design by humans at certain levels. However, the current development of AI models and architectural creation frameworks is inadequate and unsatisfactory. Moreover, limited studies on AI applications have focused on vernacular design or traditional architecture. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study aiming to develop a deep learning tech- nology that can design traditional architectures. This study aims to investigate the aspects of architectural design for vernacular architecture, while focusing on traditional Thai houses, and finding the proper types of generative adversarial networks (GANs) leveraged for architectural creation. By exploring its implications in the architectural field, this study proposes an approach of GANs for designing a specific architectural project style, and provides a model of CycleGAN in architectural creation using an empirical study on Thai vernacular houses as a case study. After training, the results show that the AI model can be applied to the design of modern Thai houses by enriching modern international houses with characteristics of traditional Thai houses. The primary transforming identities of the Thai vernacular architecture selected by the AI model exhibit a high gable (with top element), “Pan-lom” (windbreak on the gable), Thai-style platform (usually leaving the first floor as open space), and wood texture (including color and Thai-style assembly pattern).

But the data storage devices used are heterogeneous and typically include relational database management systems (DBMS), GIS and CAD files. As a result, data are present in different locations on different platforms and under different schemas. This poses a problem for software applications meant to support decision-making in urban design that require input from more than one data source. This dissertation demonstrates how data warehousing—combined with object-oriented data modeling—is able to provide a general solution for this problem. Data warehousing is a technique initially developed for business applications, but is equally useful for urban design: The data warehouse constitutes a communication layer between the urban design applications and data sources. It makes the data available through a unified interface that hides the sources themselves and represents that data in terms of a general-purpose, preferably object-oriented, model. The dissertation also describes an implementation prototype of the data model and the data warehouse. The test case of this research is the city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia, which faces significant urban design and planning issues in connection with the pilgrimage (Hajj) that brings millions of visitors to the city every year.

summary Evaluating the use of architectural and urban spaces is an important issue for architects and urban designers who wish to enhance space usability. Space usability is crucial in crowded spaces such as Mataf areas. Millions of people come to the city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia every year to perform Hajj (Islamic Pilgrimage) and Umrah. A cornerstone of Hajj and Umrah spirituals is to perform Tawaf, which is the circumambulation of the Ka'bah in the center of the Holy Mosque in Makkah. The areas of performing Tawaf (called Mataf) become very crowded during Hajj and the last ten days of Ramadan. This paper demonstrates how we utilized Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze pedestrian movement while performing Tawaf. During the Hajj of 1424 H (2004 in the Georgian Calendar), several GPS devices were used to collect pedestrian movement coordinates at specific time intervals. Computer software for tracking analysis is used to visualize and analyze the pattern of pedestrian movement in Tawaf. The software allows users to view temporal data, which can be set up with past time windows for historical data analysis. The findings of this research show levels of service and flow rates throughout different zones and times of Mataf. They indicate the most critical zones and times for Tawaf during Hajj. They also visually demonstrate the track pattern of pedestrian movement at different locations in the Tawaf area. The paper concludes with some redesign recommendations to remove obstacles and facilitate pedestrian movement in Tawaf. The approach described in this paper can be implemented in architectural and urban design space modifications to improve pedestrian movement in open spaces.

summary In the context of data-driven culture, built space still maintains low responsiveness and adaptability. Part of this reality lies in the low resolution of live information we have about the behavior and condition of surfaces and materials. This research addresses this issue by exploring the development of a deformation-sensing composite membrane material system following a bottom-up approach and combining various technologies toward solving related technical issues—exploring conductivity properties of graphene and maximizing utilization within an architecture-related proof-of-concept scenario and a workflow including design, fabrication, and application methodology. Introduced simulation of intended deformation helps optimize the pattern of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) to maximize membrane sensitivity to a specific deformation type while minimizing material usage. Research explores various substrate materials and graphene incorporation methods with initial geometric exploration. Finally, research introduces data collection and machine learning techniques to train recognition of certain types of deformation (single point touch) on resistance changes. The final prototype demonstrates stable and symmetric readings of resistance in a static state and, after training, exhibits an 88% prediction accuracy of membrane shape on a labeled sample data-set through a pre-trained neural network. The proposed framework consisting of a simulation based, graphene-capturing fabrication method on stretchable surfaces, and includes initial exploration in neural network training shape detection, which combined, demonstrate an advanced approach to embedding intelligence.
