summary This paper addresses challenges in harnessing the full potential of Building Information Modelling (BIM) as an architectural design instrument, from a pedagogical perspective. It introduces a plural and flexible BIM framework that integrates parametric modelling, data-flow scripting and design performance simulation techniques creatively in the design process. The framework is demonstrated through an academic endeavour, where students explored the articulation of distinct workflows, departing from the yet-fresh Rhino.Inside.Revit technology to evaluate ecological implications of architectural design. This involved computing potential resonances existing between building form (material and geometric configurations) and environmental conditions (such as solar exposure, energy performance and embodied carbon dynamics) over two proposed application scenarios: Stage 1 and Stage 2. Unlike other jour-nals in this field, Automation in Construction has been dedicated to exploring the processes and tools used by the A/E/C community, rather than its products. It has been dedicated to issues concerning the A/ E / C community specifically, and to methods, practices and tools that make use of computers in particular, thereby filling a void which existed, until its inauguration, within the A/E/C community's publications.

summary Evaluation can be defined as measuring the fit between achieved (or expected) performances and stated criteria. It is complicated by the multi-criteria and multi-level modalities of design, where an overall balance of performances is preferred to maximizing the performance of a few characteristics, and where evaluation must be performed at different design phases, each characterized by a different informational profile. Each design modality requires a different approach to evaluation: the Multi-Criteria modality requires evaluation of a proposed solution at a particular design phase from multiple points of view, while the Multi-Level modality requires the evaluation of a particular performance characteristic at several different design phases. This paper discusses the multi-modal nature of evaluation and prediction in design, exemplified by some of the approaches that have been proposed to support them computationally. It then argues for the need to develop an integrated, multi-modal design evaluation paradigm.

summary The attractiveness of shape operators to end-users of geometric modeling systems stems from their intuitive clarity. Their implementation, however, is one of the most difficult algorithms in computational geometry. This complexity is further increased by the special properties of surfaces, such as orientation, that places the algorithm in the domain of manifold theory more than of set theory. A theoretical base for applying the set-theoretic operators of union, intersection and difference to spatial domains is presented, along with an algorithm that is successful in negotiating these complexities and all their special cases (in particular the presence of coincidental surfaces). The general principles of representing solids through their bounding surfaces and topics in manifold theory and boolean algebra relevant to understanding the algorithm are also discussed. The algorithm has been successfully implemented in three different geometric modeling systems over a period of four years. Some example of its application are included

title CAD Technology Transfer: A Case Study

summary Transferring innovative university-based research results to the industry or practice that will ultimately use them is an arduous, time-consuming effort. One way to effect this technology transfer is to develop a demonstrable prototype product and then find or form a corporation that can expand the prototype into a full product and market it to the profession. Another way, which can shorten the transfer process, is to "sell" the idea, rather than the product, to a corporation that has the vision, the resources and the technical competency to support its development, with the intent to eventually market it. In this paper, we describe a case study of this latter approach, based on our seven year experience of researching, developing and transferring innovative architectural CAD technology. We describe the birth, growth, and maturity of Worldview, a computer-aided design and modeling system for use by architects. The project was initiated in 1983, and went through five software versions, numerous grants and grant extensions, two granting corporations, and extensive field testing. The software has developed into a mature system, with sufficient functionality appropriate for commercial distribution. The paper describes not only the factual chronology of the project, but also highlights the advantages and drawbacks of market-oriented university research. We conclude with suggestions as to how the process may be improved, and how problems and obstacles can be minimized.

summary This paper presents an analytical approach for the subdivision of curved surfaces made of rectangular patches, exploiting the properties of the Bernstein-Bezier surface representation. It is presented and demonstrated for the recursive subdivision of a patch into 4 sub-patches. It utilizes the linear dependency between the parametric vectors and the surface to re-parametrize the equation of the patch, and builds a quadtree of the patches. This method is useful for reducing the curvature of individual patches until some arbitrary criterion of planarity has been reached. Once reach, patches can be intersected analytically, to find the locus of intersection between two curved surfaces

summary A general purpose, research oriented, interactive modeling system is presented. It is based on two different coherent polyhedral shape representations: a planar graph, used for computation and data manipulation, and relational-database for compact store and general communication with application programs. The two representations effectively partition the system shape-space into active and inactive shapes, respectively. These are explicitly interchangeable by the user, keeping the actual workspace at a manageable size. The basic functionalities provided by the system include the combination of primitive shapes into complex objects by means of spatial set operators (union, intersection and difference), their modeling by means of scaling, rotation and translation, spatial interference detection and graphical display capabilities

summary Determining the inclusion of a point in volume-enclosing polyhedra (shapes) in 3D space is, in principle, the extension of the well-known problem of determining the inclusion of a point in a polygon in 2D space. However, the extra degree of freedom makes 3D point-polyhedron containment analysis much more difficult to solve than the 2D point polygon problem, mainly because of the nonsequential ordering of the shape elements, which requires global shape data to be applied for resolving special cases. Two general O(n) algorithms for solving the problem by reducing the 3D case into the solvable 2D case are presented. The first algorithm, denoted 'the projection method,' is applicable to any planar- faced polyhedron, reducing the dimensionality by employing parallel projection to generate planar images of the shape faces, together with an image of the point being tested for inclusion. The containment relationship of these images is used to increment a global parity-counter when appropriate, representing an abstraction for counting the intersections between the surface of the shape and a halfline extending from the point to infinity. An 'inside' relationship is established when the parity-count is odd. Special cases (coincidence of the halfline with edges or vertices of the shape) are resolved by eliminating the coincidental elements and re-projecting the merged faces. The second algorithm, denoted 'the intersection method,' is applicable to any well- formed shape, including curved-surfaced ones. It reduces the dimensionality by intersecting the polygonal trace of the shape surface at the plane of intersection, which is tested for containing the trace of the point in the plane, directly establishing the overall 3D containment relationship. A particular O(n) implementation of the 2D point-in-polygon inclusion algorithm, which is used for solving the problem once reduced in dimensionality, is also presented. The presentation is complemented by discussions of the problems associated with point-polyhedron relationship determination in general, and comparative analysis of the two particular algorithms presented

This book introduces the concept of modeling objects in the computer's memory so it can be used to aide the process of their design. Modeling is defined as an hierarchical abstraction of data and operators to manipulate it, subject to semantic integrity constraints that guarantee the realizability of the designed artifact in the real world. Starting with general concepts of modeling, the book moves on to discuss the modeling of shapes (form) in two and in three dimensions. The discussion covers both topology and geometry. Next the book introduces the concept of shape transformations (translation, scaling, rotation, etc.), both in absolute and in relative terms. The book then introduces the concept of assembly modeling, and adds non-graphical attributes to the representation. It concludes with a discussion on user interface and parametrization. The book includes many examples written in Pascal that complement the theory, and can be used as a basis for building a geometric modeling engine. It also includes exercises, so it can be used as a text book for a two-semester advance course in geometric modeling

summary Generalizing the computational geometric support for the representation of designed artifacts over multiple different levels of symbolic abstraction (e.g., sketches, solid modeling, and drafting) is discussed. First, the need for integrating the representation and manipulation of points, lines, polygons and solids for the purpose of facilitating the design of artifacts at many levels of design abstractions established. Second, a vertically integrated model that supports the representation and manipulation of points, lines, polygons, and solids without redundancy, is presented. The particular roles of the operators and the operandi are discussed, along with their hierarchical integration. The utility of the model is demonstrated in performing operations that involve multiple different levels of data abstraction, such as splitting solids at an arbitrary polygon inscribed on their boundary. Finally, a particular implementation of the integrated model is presented. This implementation is based on the Hybrid Edge, a derivative from Baumgart's Winged Edge and Eastman's Split Edge models. The Hybrid Edge distinguishes between the roles of edges as topological adjacency information carriers and their role as carriers of directionality information. This distinction permits the Hybrid Edge to handle the different combinations of adjacency and directionality requirements imposed by different abstraction levels in the integrated model

summary The primary uses of computers in the construction industry have been shifting, over the past four decades, from the evaluation of proposed design solutions, to their graphical (and other) representation, and more recently to facilitating collaboration among the various professionals who are involved in the design process. The paper argues that what may appear to be shifts in emphasis actually represents convergence on a single, original goal: the use of computers to help designers assess the quality, desirability, and the implications of their creations. The paper shows how the formerly independent components can be joined into an integrated collaborative design environment, where they build upon and strengthen each other. Moreover, the paper argues that this convergence represents the future of CAAD research and development, providing the appropriate answer to the upcoming needs of the construction industry, whose products have become too complex and must abide by too many requirements for any one professional to handle all by himself. The paper argues that further improvements in the overall quality of the products, and the process of their design, will only accrue when the heretofore separate solutions are considered together, as integral parts of an overall solution. The paper describes the efforts that have been made by the CAD Research Group in Berkeley over the past six years in developing an integrated collaborative design environment that can facilitate multidisciplinary, a- synchronous design of buildings. The environment includes several semantically-rich, shared product representations, a network of distributed evaluators, and graphically enhanced collaboration and negotiation tools.

summary Digital technologies are becoming a popular vehicle for the re-creation and dissemination of cultural heritage, in the form of modeling buildings, people, and their activities. Video game engines can be used to let user virtually "inhabit" the digitally recreated worlds made accessible via the Internet, opening them up to people who otherwise would never be exposed to these cultural sites. Yet, like every medium ever used to preserve cultural heritage, digital media is not neutral: it impacts the represented content and the ways the audience interprets it. Perhaps more than any older technology, it has the potential to affect the very meaning of the represented content in terms of the cultural image it creates. This paper examines the applications and implications of digital media for the recreation and communication of cultural heritage, drawing on the lessons learned from a project to recreate the thriving jazz and blues club scene in West Oakland, California, in the 1940s and 1950s.

summary This paper presents the results of a quantitative analysis to measure the development of creative design ideas in design protocols. It presents a working definition of design creativity used in the analysis followed by the method of study. Five sets of video and audio data were collected from experiments that involved two designers designing similar tasks in three different settings: face-to-face, an Internet GroupBoard, and a 3D virtual world. The most creative pair was selected for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Our result shows that designers developed more design ideas in the face-to-face setting than in the 3D virtual world settings.

summary This paper presents the development of a prototype XMLbased 3D campus map using the 3D VML library. Many universities in the U.S. use two-dimensional (2D) raster image to provide the campus map along with additional building information on their Web site. Research shows that three-dimensional (3D) expression of the 3D objects helps human beings understand the spatial relationship between the objects. Some universities use 3D campus maps to help visitors more intuitively access the building information. However, these 3D campus maps are usually created using raster images. The users cannot change the view point in the 3D campus map for better understanding of the arrangement of the campus. If the users can navigate around in the 3D campus map, they may be able to locate the building of their interest more intuitively. This paper introduces emerging Web technologies that deliver 3D vector graphics on the Web browser over the internet, and the algorithm of the prototype XML-based 3D campus map. Some advantages of using VML in delivering the interactive 3D campus map are also discussed.

summary This paper focuses on analyses of the feasibility of telerobotic and autonomous systems in hazardous environments. The hazardous environments are divided into three missions: area clearance, removal of unexploded ordnance, and hazardous waste removal. This paper identifies the factors impacting military's missions on various operating systems. Then, a decision support system based on fuzzy logic is developed for studying these factors to determine the feasibility of automating military's environmental restoration operations. The last part of the paper provides a set of recommendations for technology policy development.
