summary Contemporary responsive architecture often tries to achieve optimised building performance in response to changing environmental conditions. In the precedents a key area of responsiveness is in the building façades or skins. Often however, the skin is made from discrete components and separated equipment. T his research explores the potential for designing responsive architectural morphing skins with kinetic materials that have integrated sensing and luminous abilities. Instead of embedded individual discrete components, this approach intends to integrate the sensing devices and building skins as one ‘single’ entity. This investigation is conducted by project. The project is Blanket, which aims to provide an alternative approach for a lightweight, fl exible and economical sensory architectural skin that respond to proximity and lighting stimuli.

summary Existing media façades do not function as fenestration devices. They have been used mainly for visual communication and aesthetic purposes. This paper introduces a responsive morphing skin that can act as an active fenestration device as well as a media skin. We investigate new possibilities of using form-changing materials in designing responsive morphing skins that respond to environmental conditions and act as a communicative display. The design experiment that embodied this investigation, namely Blind, serves as a new layer of analogue media brise-soleil for existing space. It communicates the relationships between interior and exterior spaces visually and projects mutable imageries to the surrounding environment through sunlight. The design process of Blind simulates the responsive behaviour of the intended architectural skin by integrating physical computing and parametric design tools. This process includes the integration of soft apertures and architectural morphing skin to introduce a novel design method that enables an architectural skin to be a means of communication and fenestration. It responds to changing stimuli and intends to improve the spatial quality of existing environments through two types of transformations: morphological and patterned.

title Dynamic skin: Interacting with space: An inter-media interface between people and space

summary Space in its physical form provides the major architectural experience for the people inside the space. How people interact with their surrounding space dynamically is a noteworthy research topic. Architectural skin (or “skin” in this project) is the physical interface between people and their surroundings. The skin in this sense represents an inter-media that receive/sense the interactive behaviours of people and react back into space. Further, the skin needs to be mediated and reacted dynamically according to the interaction behaviours. With the case studies, the knowledge of skin design has achieved and then applied to develop three prototypes. In order to achieve the feasibility of skin design for dynamic skins, the multiple channels of input sensors are desired. Thus, a system called dynamic skin is proposed and details of process are evaluated. In order to incorporate the diverse scenario appeared in the cases and prototypes, a distributed system approach such as multi-agent system design is appealing to us. We propose a distributed dynamic skin platform that cannot only provide sufficient interaction between people and space, but also extending such space to the cloud and network.

title Mapping the Experience of Space

summary This paper aims to contribute to the discussion and our understanding of time-based mapping of visual information. Our approach is to enhance the traditional contextual static analysis through the acknowledgement of the body and the senses as key indicators of perceptual spatial experience. The time-based mapping paradigms have produced different ways of designing space by leveraging perceptual and other sensorial understanding, leading to the formation of variables (or parameters) which at the same time turn themselves as catalysts for other variables. The potential for a constantly evolving reinterpretation of the perceptual experience and for associated paradigm to shift suggest a multiplicity of design possibilities for urban areas that also need to adapt to the new requirements of contemporary living. In essence, the paper will bring to light the deployment of tools (digital and analogue) to turn static invisible data to dynamic visible data. In other words, we want to explore how the data can be treated as a generative system, enabling students and tutors alike to experience space which accounts for sensory performances and behaviours within the space.

summary As we stand with our feet on earth’s outermost surface we build an architecture today that is much like it was several thousand years earlier, in an attempt to extend that outer shell with one of our own making. Artificial masses are built from a refinement of this existing geologic layer into materials of stone, steel, concrete, and glass that assemble to produce new pockets of space through the buildings they create. However, the sixth century BC writer Thales of Miletus put a different perspective on this: he insisted that we live, in reality, not on the summit of a solid earth but at the bottom of an ocean of air (Holmyard 1931). And so, as architecture continues to build up the outermost layer of earth’s surface through a mimicking, embellishing, and enhancing of the materials which it comes from, it raises the question of why we have not brought a similar relationship to the materialities at the bottom of this “ocean” of air to create the spaces we call architecture. If you were looking to level a complaint with the architectural profession, stating that it has not been ambitious enough in scope would not be one. Architects have never shied away from the opportunity to design everything from the building’s shell to the teaspoon used to stir your sugar in its matching cup. But it would seem that the profession has developed a rather large blind spot in terms of what it sees as a malleable material with which to engage. Architects have made assumptions as to what is beyond our scope of action, refraining from engaging a range of material variables due to a belief that the task would be too great or simply beyond our physical control. So even though we are enveloped by them continuously, both on the exterior as well as the interior of our buildings, it must be assumed that the particles, waves, and frequencies of energy that move around us are thought by architects to be too faint and shaky to unload upon them any heavy obligations, that they are too unwieldy for us to control to create the physical boundaries of separation, security, and movement required of architecture. This has resulted in a cultivated set of blinders that essentially defines architecture as a set of mediation devices (surfaces, walls, and inert masses) for tempering the environmental context it is situated in from the individuals and activities within. The spaces we inhabit are defined by their ability to decide what gets in and what stays out (sunlight, precipitation, winds). We place our organizational demands and aesthetic opinions on the surfaces that mediate these variables rather than seeing them as available for manipulation as a building material on their own. The intention here is to recalibrate the materialities that make up that environmental context to build architecture. The starting point is a rather naive question: can we design the energy systems that course in and around us daily as an architectural material so as to take on the needs of activities, securities, and lifestyles associated with architecture? Can the variables that we would normally mediate against instead be heightened and amplified so as to become the architecture itself? That which many would incorrectly dismiss as simply “air” today—thought to be homogeneous, scale-less, and vacant due in part to the limits of our human sensory system to perceive more fully otherwise—might tomorrow be further articulated, populated, and layered so as to become a materiality that will build spatial boundaries, define activities of individuals and movement, and act as architectural space. Our environmental context consists of a diverse range of materials (particles and waves of energy, spectrum of light, sound waves, and chemical particles) that can be manipulated and formed to meet our needs. The opportunity before us today is to embrace the needs of organizational structures and aesthetics by designing the active context that surrounds us through the material energies that define it.

title Virtual Mock-up Simulation of Building Skins for Design to Fabrication Integration

summary With the growing demand for mock-up integration into late design and pre-construction phases, there is an increasing gap between the virtual design model of the building and the construction model. The gap is reinforced by lack of strong iterative exchanges between design and fabrication and consequently the construction of the building skin systems. This paper will discuss the research being conducted using virtual mock-ups as an earlier insertion of fabrication parameters into design process and presents a solution to bridge this gap. Studies of model integration will be introduced using component-based 3D-CAD modeling to link front and end user scenarios.

summary The interesting distinction established by Collin Rowe and Robert Slutzky regarding the concept of transparency in modern architecture can be further enriched in relation to digital architecture and the new ways in which architects may address the design of material limits. The polarity between materiality and virtuality, between being and appearance is challenged with the concept of eversion and could lead to what we have referred to as virtual transparency. The intricate performative latticed skins designed and fabricated thanks to C.A.D./C.A.M. techniques have produced different states of transparent visual effects that either conceal or partially suggest silhouettes producing latticed transparencies. Finally, the development of next generation liquid crystal displays may introduce highly responsive transparent membranes in architecture allowing a one step further virtual transparency that could be described as translucent transparency.

summary The premise of this paper addresses the limited shared vocabulary of landscape architecture and architectural design - evident in the application of terms such as ‘spatial design’ and ‘spatial planning’. In their current usage, such terms emphasize the visible, terrestrial, pedestrian perspective level, often to the absolute exclusion of a spatial, ie. volumetric, comprehension of the environment. This deficit is acutely evident in the education of Landscape Architecture and Architecture, and discussion of their shared ground. The dominant document to map such analysis and design is the plan, or 3d-dimensional representations of the same, restricted to an extrusion or height map. GIS techniques in spatial design tend to be weighted towards visual, surface based data (slope analysis, exposure, viewshed etc.). Our goal within this domain lies in transforming aspects of the intangible - the characteristics of open space itself - into a form that is legible, quantifiable, and malleable.

summary Pneumatic systems are increasingly utilized in various fields. Applications of such systems include interactive installations, architectural skins, bionic designs, wearables, soft robotics, and more. This trend has heightened the need for professionals in design and art to integrate pneumatic systems into their work. However, most pneumatic simulation software emphasizes the expertise of devices; operating logic in different fields can become obstacles for designers. In this paper, we introduced a lightweight toolkit for interactive planning of pneumatic systems in design, built on the parametric modelling software Rhino Grasshopper. Our toolkit focuses on the comprehensive consideration of space, equipment, human sensory experience, and interactive scenarios. Users can map real equipment functions onto a virtual model within the 3D software, and these elements are organized in virtual space and linked in the visual programming interface to form the pneumatic system's initial framework. Three pneumatic design cases are used to test the toolkit, including one displayed at an art and technology exhibition. An integrated workflow is shown to produce preliminary pneumatic system diagrams and interactive scenario simulations. This proposed approach provides opportunities for integration and creative applications in the pneumatic and design fields based on modelling software familiar to designers.

summary This paper presents the design of a novel material system with sensing, form-changing and luminous capacities for responsive and kinetic architecture. This aim is explored and evaluated through an experimental design investigation in the form of an architectural skin. Through experimentation with alternative materials and a rigorous process of designing the responsive material systems,a new architectural skin, namely Blanket, emerged from this research. The newly developed responsive material system is an amalgamation of silicone rubbers and glowing pigments, molded and fabricated in a prescribed way—embedded with shape memory alloys on a tensegrity skeletal structure to achieve the desired morphing properties and absorb solar energy to glow in the dark.Thus, the design investigation explores the potential of the use of form-changing materials with capacitance sensing, energy absorbing and illumination capabilities for a morphing architectural skin that is capable of responding to proximity and lighting stimuli. This lightweight, flexible and elastic architectural morphing skin is designed to minimize the use of discrete mechanical components. It moves towards an integrated “synthetic” morphing architecture that can sense and respond to environmental and occupancy conditions.

title Designing Architectural Morphing Skins with Elastic Modular Systems

summary This paper discusses the issues of designing architectural skins that can be physically morphed to adapt to changing needs.To achieve this architectural vision, designers have focused on developing mechanical joints, components, and systems for actuation and kinetic transformation. However, the unexplored approach of using lightweight elastic form-changing materials provides an opportunity for designing responsive architectural skins and skeletons with fewer mechanical operations. This research aims to develop elastic modular systems that can be applied as a second skin or brise-soleil to existing buildings.The use of the second skin has the potential to allow existing buildings to perform better in various climatic conditions and to provide a visually compelling skin.This approach is evaluated through three design experiments with prototypes, namely Tent, Curtain and Blind, to serve two fundamental purposes: Comfort and Communication.These experimental prototypes explore the use of digital and physical computation embedded in form-changing materials to design architectural morphing skins that manipulate sunlight and act as responsive shading devices.

summary Adaptive building systems aim to enhance user comfort and reduce energy consumption in buildings. However, sensing the environment and generating relevant motion requires complex systems. The high costs associated with the installation, maintenance, and energy consumption of traditional systems hinder their widespread adoption. A more efficient alternative can be found in nature by harnessing the intrinsic properties of materials. Recent studies inspired by pinecones showed that wood bilayers with different swelling and shrinking ratios can passively shape change in response to environmental humidity. The morphing direction is determined by fiber orientation, which can be controlled by extrusion-based 3D printers. The existing literature highlights several challenges in utilizing hygroscopic wood actuators for climate-responsive building skins, including the predictability of motion, response speed, and scalability. Hence, this research investigates the design space at both mesostructural and macrostructural levels for controlled, scaleable motion. To this end, a series of experiments were conducted in a controlled environment to observe the actuation dynamics. The experiments explored design parameters including thickness, porosity, bilayer ratio, layer orientation, and 3D printing parameters such as layer thickness and printing order. Collected data were utilized to construct a model that can predict the actuation and find the configuration for the required motion. Two implementations of this model are proposed. While the first design makes use of combined actuators for motion amplification, the latter employs pre-stressed bistability to control the timing of motion. Both designs were tested at scales of 1/2 and 1 to 1, using a wood-based filament and wood veneer as actuators, respectively. The results demonstrate that the use of multiple joined actuators significantly increases the actuation speed. Moreover, it is shown that the humidity level required to trigger the shape-shifts can be tuned thanks to the pre-stressed bistable structures. This is promising in terms of adaptability to diverse climates and enhancement of energy efficiency in buildings.

summary Virtual reality creates an effective communication platform with a high degree of perception and exploration, increasing the benefits of VR applied functions.This research paper reports a virtual reality function of using the micro-simulation editor-player with XML file in the virtual reality environment.The details of the function are presented.The function aiming at combining visual and textual data in VR model visualisation, was developed by the researcher, and was included in the micro-simulation plug-in of a virtual reality program,VR Studio version 6, previously known as UC-Win/Road, by the program developers.The research paper discusses the computer simulation techniques and uses in virtual reality in general.The research paper proceeds to introduce a case study of construction process visualization in the virtual reality environment, in which the newly developed function is utilized to simultaneously visualise data reports related to the stages of VR model visualisation.The concluding remarks accentuate this micro-simulation function with its potential uses in different fields.

summary This paper explores the interaction and different types of representations enacted in a BIM-enabled environment that involves interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary collaboration among teams of designers in an architectural praxis context. By means of an ethnographic study conducted over the course of an architectural project from schematic design to construction documents, including five disciplines and twenty subjects, genres of communication interfaces are identified between BIM-authoring tools, sketching interfaces and domain specific analysis tools, and explored within the realm of distributed cognition. Implications in architectural practice and education are then discussed.

summary It is noted that architects need new and quick methods designing the historic architectural styles, as well as restoring the historical urban areas particularly the Islamic ones. These designs and restorations should adapt to the basics of the Islamic style used; general concept, module and features. Smart Geometry provides advanced design concepts and increases alternative variations. Parametric design softwares also add more rules and relations on the design process. Obviously, the Islamic module and proportions are used as design generators that result in extracting a number of alternatives easily in a little time. Generative Components (GC) is the parametric software used to achieve the desired objectives of this research.

summary Ecological and environmental issues are playing an important and larger role in corporate and manufacturing strategies. For complete creative design process, buildings require both for construction and manufacturing, due to their comparatively long life cycle for maintenance, significant raw material and energy resources. Thinking in terms of product life cycles is one of the challenges facing manufacturers today. “Life Cycle Management” (LCM) considers the product life cycle as a whole and optimizes the interaction of product design, construction, manufacturing and life cycle activities. The goal of this approach is to protect resources and maximize the effectiveness during usage by means of Life Cycle Assessment, Product Data Management, Technical Support and last but not least by Life Cycle Costing. In this paper the environmental consciousness issues pertaining to design, construction, manufacturing and operations management are presented through computer intelligent technologies of this 21century. So, this paper shows the existing approaches of LCM and discusses their visions and further development.

summary Physical Digitality is the second volume of the conference proceedings of the 30th eCAADe conference, held from 12-14 september 2012 in Prague at the Faculty of Architecture of Czech Technical University in Prague. The companion volume is called Digital Physicality. Together, both volumes contain 154 papers that were submitted to this conference. Digitality is the condition of living in a world where ubiquitous information and communication technology is embedded in the physical world. Although it is possible to point out what is “digital” and what is “real,” the distinction has become pointless, and it has no more explanatory power for our environment, buildings, and behaviour. Material objects are invested with communication possibilities, teams are communicating even when not together, and buildings can sense and respond to the environment, each other, and to inhabitants. Digital is no longer an add-on, extra, or separate software. Reality is partly digital and partly physical. The implication of this condition is not clear however, and it is necessary to investigate its potential. New strategies are necessary that acknowledge the synergetic qualities of the physical and the digital. This is not limited to our designs but it also infl uences the process, methods, and what or how we teach. The subdivision of papers in these volumes follow the distinction made in the conference theme. The papers in Physical Digitality have their orientation mainly in the physical realm, and reach towards the digital part. It has to be granted that this distinction is rather crude, because working from two extremes (digital versus physical) tends to ignore the arguably most interesting middle ground.

This extends beyond material and component databases of building materials, but involves time, construction knowledge, material properties, space logic, people behaviour, and so on. summary The use of digital design and fabrication technologies in architecture has followed a paradigm shift, which has seen the topology, form and structure of architecture pushed to incorporate areas such as climate, construction, acoustic etc. While these digital technologies are intended to enhance the processes and performance, a discussion of aesthetics has been ignored. Surmising that the use of digital technology enhances the performability and effi ciency aspects of architecture as well as the aesthetics, this research questions what the new relationships and arrangements for structure and ornament are. What are the challenges when structure uses a process-based logic and is sensitive to materiality whereas the aesthetics has a representation-based logic and is not sensitive to materiality? The authors of this paper contribute to this debate by using the notion of tectonic as a platform for gaining and creating knowledge about this issue and examining the issues through the design and prototyping of a Multi-functional Pavilion.

title Symbiosis of Structural & Non-Structural properties in Building

summary This paper highlights the different interplays between structural and non-structural parts in building artifact as the result of modes of building processes and massing. The massing is understood as processes of assembling material into a body through which we identify with the building physically. In the last decade architecture discipline as the result of technological inventions has faced shifts in the design processes, massing processes and topology of the artefact. In which we witness integral coexistence between the structural and non-structural elements of building. In this paper the seeds of this integral interplay is scrutinised through the study of design and massing processes of a multi-functional pavilion prototype as a case study.
