summary This paper presents a practical experience developed within the framework of a network of researchers dedicated to develop projects of technology transfer, training and research in the field of innovation, involving virtual reality, augmented reality and advanced interaction. The group develops visualization oriented technologies and aim to socialize the experiences developed. In this sense was created an Electronic Guide to cultural routes in southern Brazil, exploiting the contemporary concept of ubiquitous tourism, in which users access tourism content with mobile devices, using sensitivity to context, semantic web and advanced visualization, thus rescuing the memory and regional architectural heritage.

summary A so-called “Design Process Investigation toolbox” (DPI toolbox), has been developed. It is a set of computational tools that simulate spatial-structural design processes. Its objectives are to study spatial-structural design processes and to support the involved actors. Two case-studies are presented which demonstrate how to: (1) study the influence of transformation methods on design instances and (2) study the influence of transformation methods on the behavior of other transformation methods. It was found that in design instances with the same type of structural elements the influence of a specifically varied transformation method is more explicit; while, when different types are present this influence is more undetermined. It was also found that the use of two specifically different structural modification methods have little influence on the sub-sequential spatial transformation method.

summary Based on our current daily rate, 85,410 hours is the average amount of time that an adult in the United States will spend on their phone in a lifetime (Howarth 2023). This is time spent texting, tweeting, emailing, snapping, chatting, posting, and interacting with an interface which each of us carry in our pocket. Kelly Dobson explains, “We psychologically view the cell phone as an extension of our bodies, which is why when you accidentally forget it or leave it behind you feel you have lost apart of yourself” (2013). In reality, this device is just one of many technologies which affect our relationship with our bodies and the physical world. Additionally, Zoom meetings, social media networks, on-line shopping, and delivery robots, all increasingly detach our bodies and our senses from our everyday experiences and interactions. In response to digital culture, Liam Young writes, “Perhaps the day will come when we turn off our target ads, navigational prompts, Tinder match notifications, and status updates to find a world stripped bare, where nothing is left but scaffolds and screens” (2015). Make no mistake; the collection of projects shared in these field notes is intended to be a counterpoint to such a prophesied future. However, the intent is not to try to compete with technology, but rather, to consider the built environment itself as an interface, encouraging interaction through feedback and responsivity directly related to human factors, finding ways to re-engage the body through design.

summary The project’s objective is to study spatial-structural design processes and to support the involved actors; to that end a computational tool so-called Research Engine (RE) has been developed. The RE seeks to fulfill four aims: (1) to study the influence of transformations methods on design instances; (2) to study the influence of transformations methods on the behavior of other transformations methods; (3) to aid in finding “best compromised” or interesting spatial and structural design instances; and (4) to serve as design support tool, providing useful information in early stages of the design process. The paper describes the RE framework and its implementation. Case-studies are presented which showcase the RE’s capabilities and demonstrate that it does fulfill the previously stated aims.

summary In recent years, academia has deviated from the lecture-based model to a hybridized system of instruction and experiential learning. Experiential learning aids students in understanding collaborative processes in architectural praxis and exposes them to engaging learning opportunities, a critical component of architectural studio education (Nijholt et al. 2013). During the COVID-19 outbreak, students are barred from accessing on-campus facilities. This causes a redevelopment of curricular delivery and disrupts experiential learning which heavily relies on in-person interaction. It is imperative for instructors to retain experiential learning in the transition to virtual instruction. This paper explores experiential learning within virtual platforms for instruction. Through outlining the implementation of technologies, capitalizing on connectivity, and maximizing opportunity for digital problem solving, the authors posit a framework that other educators may adopt. The paper concludes with a case study of a virtual design-build project, and the various techniques implemented in retaining experiential learning during the pandemic.

summary Over the past several decades, the conception and construction of formal complexity has disregarded the realities of material waste, costs, and accessibility. By engaging the isometric relationship between flatness and three-dimensional form, the research shown here investigates how waste-conscious approaches to geometric innovation can create new architectural languages. Specifically, the work deploys a subset of curved-crease folding that uses planar reflections referred to as sectional mirror operations to create unique forms comprised of composite cylindrical and conical surfaces (Figure 1). Whereas known studies in curved-crease folding typically explore singular (one-off, figural) compositions (Davis et al. 2013), this process develops a module aggregation strategy to suggest large inhabitable structures as both figural and field-like conditions.

summary The intent of this research is to study potential improvements and optimizations in the context of robotic fabrication paired with Augmented Reality (AR), leveraging the technology in the fabrication of the individual part, as well as guiding the larger assembly process. AR applications within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry have seen constant research and development as designers, fabricators, and contractors seek methods to reduce errors, minimize waste, and optimize efficiency to lower costs (Chi, Kang, and Wang 2013). Recent advancements have made the technology very accessible and feasible for use in the field, as demonstrated by seminal projects such as the Steampunk Pavilion in Tallinn, Estonia (Jahn, Newnham, and Berg 2022). These types of projects typically improve manual craft processes. They often provide projective guidelines, and make possible complex geometries that would otherwise be painstakingly slow to complete and require decades of artisanal experience (Jahn et al. 2019). Building upon a previously developed robotic tube bending workflow, our research implements a custom AR interface to streamline the bending process for multiple, large, complex parts with many bends, providing a pre-visualization of the expected fabrication process for safety and part-verification purposes. We demonstrate the utility of this AR overlay in the part fabrication setting and in an inadvertent, human-robot, collaborative process when parts push the fabrication method past its limits. The AR technology is also used to facilitate the assembly process of a spatial installation exploring a unique aesthetic with subtle bends, loops, knots, bundles, and weaves utilizing a rigid tube material.

summary This paper presents the results of research and development of Building Energy Simulation (BES) visualization methods. In this effort the authors used Building Information Modeling (BIM) Authoring Tools’ Application Programming Interface (API) to visualize BES results in BIM. We also used an external database to store and manage the object-based simulation results from a BES tool. Based on these methods, we created a prototype: Building Energy Performance Visualization (BEPV), which translates information from the result database to the Energy Performance Indicator (EPI) parameter in BIM. Using the prototype, when BIM models are created for building design, the building energy performance can be expressed visually as color-coding on the BIM, allowing users to see energy flows directly. The developed prototype lets architects use BIM as a common user interface for building design and performance visualization, and may improve their designs in early stages.

summary There has been a significant need for the new urban design apparatus that carries out performance analyses of the urban models, since the code reform movements focused on the sustainable urban developments. This research explores the use of parametric Building Information Modeling to enable stakeholders to intuitively understand the implications and consequences of urban design codes. We investigate whether key regulations can be captured as algorithms and ontologies in parametric BIM and Object-Oriented Programming. Then we present our prototype of parametric urban models in a BIM platform that explains (1) the extent which urban design code information can be parameterized in BIM and (2) the methods how parametric models can hold code information. The results show that our prototype enables real-time manipulations of code requirements and interactive visualization of code allowances.

summary Gottfried Semper, in his 1851 text The Four Elements of Architecture, famously classifies architecture into four elemental parts: the hearth, the roof, the enclosure, and the mound, describing the role of the last three to be the “defenders of the hearth’s flame against the three hostile elements of nature (Semper 2011).” Modernity has witnessed the role of enclosure evolve to that of a sealed envelope, or one which meticulously separates the ‘natural environment,’ from the internally regulated environment as part of modern comfort. The post-modern advent of the rain-screen has further separated the layer of exteriorized cultural expression from the structuring envelope, removing the ornamental aspect of Semper’s enclosure, from the enclosing layer. This habit of casting the natural processes out of our building envelopes has resulted in the rapid depletion of space for biodiversity within our cities. Joyce Hwang in her essay “Living Among Pests,” has suggested that the needed reconnection of biodiversity with our urban buildings will force a re-examination of “facade articulation to take on more responsibilities. Ornament will become performative” (Hwang 2013).

summary The construction industry faces numerous challenges related to productivity, sustainability, and meeting global demands (Hatoum and Nassereddine 2020; Carra et al. 2018; Barbosa, Woetzel, and Mischke 2017; Bock 2015; Linner 2013). In response, the automation of design and construction has emerged as a promising solution. In the past three decades, researchers and innovators in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) fields have made significant strides in automating various aspects of building construction, utilizing computational design and robotic fabrication processes (Dubor et al. 2019). However, synthesizing innovation in automation encounters several obstacles. First, there is a lack of an established venue for information sharing, making it difficult to build upon the knowledge of peers. First, the absence of a well-established platform for information sharing hinders the ability to effectively capitalize on the knowledge of peers. Consequently, much of the research remains isolated, impeding the rapid dissemination of knowledge within the field (Mahbub 2015). Second, the absence of a standardized and unified process for automating design and construction leads to the individual development of standards, workflows, and terminologies. This lack of standardization presents a significant obstacle to research and learning within the field. Lastly, insufficient training materials hinder the acquisition of skills necessary to effectively utilize automation. Traditional in-person robotics training is resource-intensive, expensive, and designed for specific platforms (Peterson et al. 2021; Thomas 2013).

summary Commercial complexes have played an increasingly important role in contemporary cities. Due to the occurrence of crowded people or equipment overhauls, some paths in a commercial complex may become impassable, which can be seen as disruptions to its spatial system. This paper provides a practical method to quantify the spatial resilience of a commercial complex taking Beijing APM as an example. This study can be divided into the following three steps. First, transforming the realistic spatial path system to a directed network model. Second, using topological, metric, and angular distance as edge weight to calculate the centrality and present its distribution. Third, using two disruption processes, randomized and attractor-guided strategy, evaluates the spatial networks resilience. There are three conclusions from this study. The first one is the process of disruption is non-linear, and there is a phase transition process when it reaches the critical threshold. The second one is the most efficient disruption method is the topological BC attractor-guided strategy. The last one is the resilience of a commercial complex, whose 3D spatial networks resilience is lower than the 2D spatial networks resilience by comparison with Duan and Lus (2013) study.

summary The term ‘height-active’ coined by Heino Engel refers to “structure systems, of which the main task is to collect loads from horizontal planes . . . and to vertically transmit them to the base . . . or high-rises accordingly.” (Engel 2013, 14) The focus of this paper is on the characteristics of height-active wood structures due to their vertical extension and susceptibility to horizontal loading. We shall argue that “more innovation can be expected from the advanced understanding of material characteristics, which can be integrated and taken advantage of in the design process, rather than homogenized, approximated or ignored.” (Correa, Krieg and Meyboom 2019, 74) Conventional construction, insofar, has employed linear and planar wood elements in a hierarchical manner. There is an interest to take advantage of wood’s flexibility to innovate free-form high-rise wood structures. Digitized material application of wood has a wide range of technical and functional adaptation. This field notes essay highlights the importance of three main material characteristics of wood – elasticity, anisotropicity, hygroscopicity – for structural design typology of evolving high-rise endeavors.

summary Evaluation of design ideas is an important task throughout the life cycle of design development in the AEC industry. It involves multiple stakeholders with diverse backgrounds and interests. However, there is limited computational support which through this collaboration is facilitated, in particular for projects that are complex. Current systems are either highly specialized for designers or configured for a particular purpose or design workflow overlooking other stakeholders' needs. We present our approach to motivating participatory and collaborative design decision-making on alternative solutions as early as possible in the design process. The main principle motivating our approach is giving the stakeholders the control over customizing the data presentation interfaces. We introduce our prototype system D-ART as a collection of customizable web interfaces supporting design data form and performance presentation, feedback input, design solutions comparisons, and feedback compiling and presentation. Finally, we started the evaluation of these interfaces through an expert evaluation process which generally reported positive results. Although the results are not conclusive, they hint towards the need for presenting and compiling feedback back to the designers which will be the main point of our future work.

summary Flows have been a persistent theme as a rational and formal basis for architecture. This paper introduces a flow-based design framework for architecture using parametric modeling and machine learning analysis. It explores the integration of flows’ rational and figurative aspects into the early stages of the design process. The research employs para- metric tools and machine learning algorithms to represent and analyze flows, focusing on the artisanal and craft processes aiming for circular proto-typology as a transfor- mative architecture. The framework involves three stages: 3D flow modeling, machine learning analysis of formal and topological properties, and process-based programming and optimization. The results include volumetric representations of 16 artisanal flows and the classification of nodes based on their formal and topological characteristics. The framework enables the exploration of flow-driven architectural design, and bridges the gap between human interpretation and computational design. The research contributes to understanding flows to form in architecture, and the potential of machine learning in shaping architectural space.

summary Finding national identities from its traditional heritages might be an important research issue especially for Asian architects and researchers. Nevertheless, it is noticed that the structure of Korean traditional architecture has not been fully explored in a systematical or computational manner and its information is not shared efficiently. This study thus explores a computational way of structuring construction knowledge and building information of Korean traditional architecture.Ý To do this, we select a well-known old temple building, Buseoksa Muryangsujun, one of the oldest Buddhist temple in Korea, as a prototype. We first build an accurateÝ three-dimensional model of the building with an aid of a traditional building expert, categorize its building components, and then analyze their connectivity and the connectivity patterns and rules by especially focusing on the capital order system, called Gongpo. The result of the study shows several schema diagrams representing the wooden construction data model carefully designed for an intelligent building simulation and generative system that will be developed in the near future.Ý The paper also demonstrates a way of computationally describing some shape grammars that explain the components' connectivity.

summary The global construction industry is the single largest consumer of materials on the planet. Of that material consumption anywhere between 10-20% will end up in landfills as waste. Currently, there are three approaches to tackle this problem - reduce, reuse, and recycle. Concentrating purely on the challenge of reducing waste this research aims to address the problem of waste in the construction industry by addressing it in the preliminary design stage. It does so by asking the research question if computational design offers opportunities towards lean construction or to achieve Zero Waste by understanding waste as a data management challenge. For our research materials are specified in databases outlining geometrical and quantitative information either in material supplier databases (homepage) or in architecture and construction databases via Revit or Grasshopper. Consequently, one can collect via web scraping, investigate via databases, inspect and compare via Grasshopper and Python these databases to understand if one can transform data into information towards material use and consequently into knowledge on waste production and reduction. This investigation, its proposed hypothesis, methodology, implications, significance, and evaluation are presented in the paper.

summary In this study, a tsunami evacuation simulation system was developed using a game engine and open data to reflect the conditions of a local emergency situation at low cost. Chigasaki City, which is a heavily populated urban area and tourist destination along the coast of Japan, was selected as the target area for this study. A total of 20 simulations were conducted using 20,000 evacuation agents categorized as child, adult, or elderly residents or visitors randomly placed on the road surface in the target area. The simulation results indicate that a 10.60% agent damage rate may occur for a tsunami of height 10 m. In lowland areas where the river flows inland, tsunamis were observed to move up the estuary, trapping agents between the river and the coast. In such inland areas, several areas with no tsunami evacuation buildings were observed. Thus, the low-cost simulations provided by the proposed system can provide necessary support for planning and designating appropriate tsunami evacuation buildings in disaster-prone areas.

summary This research project was part of the design and construction of the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers (MEL) at the University of Virginia (UVA). The MEL was dedicated to an estimated 4,000 enslaved persons who worked at UVA between 1817 and 1865. The 80-foot-diameter memorial is a tapered toroidal shape composed of 75 stone blocks. This project demonstrates how computational design tools along with robotic digital fabrication can be used to achieve unique social and experiential effects in an architectural application. The memorial’s design was informed by an extensive community engagement process that clarified the importance of including a visual representation of enslaved people on the memorial. With this input, the eyes of Isabella Gibbons were selected to be used as a symbolic representation of triumph on the outer wall of the memorial. The MEL project could not rely solely on prior methods or existing software applications to design and fabricate this portrait due to four particularities of the project: material, geometry, representation, and scale. To address these challenges, the MEL design team employed an interdisciplinary collaborative process to develop an innovative parametric design technique: parametric photo V-carve. This technique allowed the MEL design team to render a large-scale photo-realistic portrait into stone. This project demonstrates how the synthesis of artistic motivations, computational design, and robotic digital fabrication can develop unique expressions that shape personal and cultural experiences.
