title Identificação de Geometrias Implícitas na Arquitetura a Partir de Realidade Aumentada [Alignment Identification of Implicit Geometries in Architecture from Augmented Reality]
source SIGraDi 2013 [Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Chile - Valparaíso 20 - 22 November 2013, pp. 44 - 48
summary For the initial stages of architectural training one of the strategies traditionally used is to study design cases. This exercise can help in the comprehension of implicit geometries and design processes. The use of the golden ratio, for example, is recurrent in the history of architecture. However, adequate instruments are necessary for this kind of statement. This paper demonstrates the use of Augmented Reality with this goal: virtual elements are viewed overlaying the architecture or its representation, configuring a “digital proportion measurer”. The comprehension of known architectural practices assists in structuring methods and constructing repertoires for architectural design.

summary The goal of this article is to conceptualize and structure a theoretical proposed framed of ethics in digital technology in architectural design. The methodological vision of this proposal is one of complex epistemology, which seeks to understand applied ethics in a multicultural reality and the digital processes that reformulate contemporary architectural vision. The proposed “Method 7.1: Re-action in Multi-re-form” is based on Edgar Morin’s “Method 6, Ethics”, and Victor Martin’s “Applied Ethics.” The Method 7.1 is formed by seven ethical dimensions that constitute a pattern of complex thought that systematizes the values for the production of techno-architecture.

title “Seeing” with the Hands: Teaching Architecture for the Visually-Impaired with Digitally-Fabricated Scale Models
source Global Design and Local Materialization[Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 978-3-642-38973-3] Shanghai, China, July 3-5, 2013, pp. 159-166.
summary Accessibility of information for the visually-impaired has greatly benefited from information and communication technologies (ICT’s) in the past decades. However, the interpretation of images by the blind still represents a challenge. Bidimensional representations can be understood by those who have seen at least sometime in their lives but they are too abstract for those with congenital blindness, for whom three-dimensional representations are more effective, especially during the conceptualization phase, when children are still forming mental images of the world. Ideally, educators who work with the visually-impaired should be able to produce custom 3D models as they are needed for the explanation of concepts. This paper presents an undergoing project that aims at developing a protocol for making 3D technologies technically and economically available to them.

title A New Extended Perspective System for Architectural Drawings
source Global Design and Local Materialization[Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 978-3-642-38973-3] Shanghai, China, July 3-5, 2013, pp. 63-75.
summary This paper presents the work carried out by a multidisciplinary team of researchers, gathering knowledge in architecture, drawing, geometry, mathematics and computation. The research was directed in order to create a computational tool for architectural visualization - a new digital perspectograph - with the use of a new theoretical and operative approach to linear perspective. A new kind of projection surface, a parametric one, is added to the perspective concept under current tools. The mutations of this surface are explained and a set of graphical outputs is shown. A workshop with architecture students took place to help test and validate the concept and the computational prototype.

summary Location-based mobile applications have been a rising theme for academics in the field of urbanism and in urban and transportation, because of the potential of transformation they might bring to the urban landscape (De Souza e Silva, 2013). One of the possibilities we study here is to observe social encounters fostered by commuting rides. In this paper, we try to examine the practice from the broad perspective of estimating the environmental benefits, in a context where digital information technology is wielded to address problems old and new (Townsend, 2014). This paper aims to analyze the potential of transformations that new ICTs bring to urban mobility, using as case study the official ridesharing system of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the Carona? project. The system was developed focusing on the reduction of the number of motorized trips to the University, as well as the amount of CO2 generated by them. Here we analyze the dynamics of ridesharing, using the system data, and also try to observe the role it may play towards the promotion of integration in the UFRJ community.

title Arte da Manipulação: As Interações entre Fotografia e Arte na Era Digital [The Art of Manipulation: The interaction between Photography and Art in the Digital Era]
source SIGraDi 2013 [Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Chile - Valparaíso 20 - 22 November 2013, pp. 655 - 658
summary The questions on this article point to a different understanding of the image with its different medias, more specifically where the digitalization and manipulation of the image unfocussed the once sharp and clear frontiers between photography and painting. The contemporary visual artists share a desire for the impurity and contagion in the relations between the photographic and the pictorial. The works alternate themselves between these bases besides exploring new relationships between them. It is not important anymore how an image derives into another, and today the term image manipulation can be applied for both photography and painting.

summary This paper discusses the experience of the initial phase of introduction of the BIM paradigm in the undergraduate program in Architecture and Urbanism (evening course) of FAUFBA. We started from the premise that BIM should be adopted gradually and integrated with the various subjects of the course, and should be initiated through the disciplines of graphic representation. The proposal for this course is presented and practices are discussed, as they were experienced in the discipline of Computing and Design II, which deals with this paradigm. It was observed that BIM process requires significant changes, as it encountered some initial resistance from the students. However, this approach increases the understanding of building and facilitates the project documentation. Furthermore, the understanding of the scope of the paradigm was crucial to the effective use of the adopted tool.

title Overcoming Repetition: Robotic fabrication processes at a large scale
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 11 - no. 3, 285-300
summary In the context of the Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) of ETH Zurich, the Professorship for Architecture and Digital Fabrication of Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler has set up a robotic laboratory to investigate the potentials of non-standard robotic fabrication for high rise constructions in Singapore. The high degree of industrialisation of this dominant building typology implies standardisation, simplification and repetition and accounts for the increasing monotony evident in many Asian metropolises. The aim of this research on material systems for robotic construction is to develop a new and competitive construction method that makes full use of the malleable potential of concrete as a building material. A novel, spatial, robotic "weaving" method of a tensile active material that simultaneously acts as the form defining mould, folds two separate aspects of concrete-reinforcement and formwork-into one single robotic fabrication process (see Figure 1). This in-situ process could permit the fabrication of structurally differentiated, spatially articulated and material efficient buildings.

summary The Brazilian Performance Standard (NBR 15.575/2013 – Housing Buildings – Performance) is changing the design process of residential buildings, imposing new acoustic performance criteria. In this Context, the present paper proposes the programming of a Revit plug-in for verifying sound insulation of walls between environments, collecting information of the building’s model from a parameter database, calculating values of the elements’ sound reduction index and allowing to ponder constructive systems’ performance. The application aims to amplify productivity of designers and to provide greater control over technological solutions, assisting in the compliance with performance criteria.
