title The “Franziszeische Kataster” (land register) – Only a historial Map?

summary Franz I. of Austria that the legislative and technical hindrances were cleared away in order to commence with big changes. One cantruly say that it was due to his land tax patent from the 23rd of December 1817 that he founded the main land register of Austria andof the whole empire. The basic ideas of this patent are still valid today.This land register, named after it’s originator, was also said to be a “stabile” land register because the net profit rate, which wascrucial for the rating of taxation, was to be stabilized without giving consideration to higher productivity or diligence except to casesin which the fertility of the earth was destroyed by natural phenomenon.The land register was developed for the city of Vienna in the years 1819 to 1824. This land register of Vienna was scanned and digitized by the Urban Archaeology of Vienna. Since the launching of the “Kulturgüterkataster (Cultural Heritage Cadastre)“ in 1996, the individual municipal departments of the City of Vienna have developed a massive body of know-how regarding the various fields of interest. In particular, the inventoryingand evaluation of architectural objects as implemented by the City of Vienna could be easily adapted to other EU cities. It has alreadybeen suggested to initiate corresponding EU projects or participate in such.The long-time objective is an Internet portal. Based on the applications and competence developed in Vienna, the cultural assets of European metropolises could be digitised to present them in a novel forum. Lovers of culture, historians and urban planners would thus dispose of an instrument that renders urbanistic research much more efficient. Here, the “Franziszeischer Kataster“ could play a key role. Especially in the candidate countries in Eastern and South-eastern Europe, land surveying to this day would be unthinkable without this land register. A digital version of the register, could provide enormous support to the surveyor’s offices in the new Member States.

summary The project IDEA+ aims to develop an “Integrated Design Environment for Architecture”. Its goal is providing a tool for the designer-architect that can be of assistance in the early-design phases. It should provide the possibility to perform tests (like heat or cost calculations) and simple simulations in the different (early) design phases, without the need for a fully detailed design or remodeling in a different application. The test for daylighting is already in development (Geebelen, to be published). The conceptual foundation for this design environment has been laid out in a scheme in which different design phases and scales are defined, together with appropriate tests at the different levels (Neuckermans, 1992). It is a translation of the “designerly” way of thinking of the architect (Cross, 1982). This conceptual model has been translated into a “Core Object Model” (Hendricx, 2000), which defines a structured object model to describe the necessary building model. These developments form the theoretical basis for the implementation of IDEA+ (both the data structure & prototype software), which is currently in progress. The research project addresses some issues, which are at the forefront of the architect’s interest while designing with CAAD. These are treated from the point of view of a practicing architect.

summary This article refl ects on the digital reconstruction of the Vinohrady Synagogue in Prague, which was demolished in 1951. Based on an international collaboration through the Erasmus program, expertise derived from other Viennese synagogue reconstructions at TU Vienna was combined with a resource organization methodology developed at KU Leuven. The reconstruction process is carried out using BIM software, which poses some particular attention on the software methodology and model structure, but at the same time illustrates the added value of a BIM approach, when comparing with more traditional CAD modelling systematics. Of particular interest is the approach for modelling complex geometry, integrating with more traditional 2D documents and for visualizing reconstruction assumptions within the 3D model representation.

summary This paper shows the result of a partnership between architects, cartographer and civil engineers, masters and undergraduate students, researchers focused on digital representation technologies applied to architecture, to perform three-dimensional scanning of entire buildings, internally and externally. The study is directed to exploring different types of representation which can be obtained from a point cloud to attribute accessibility to information regarding architectural heritage: the cloud itself, as an accurate record of the current state, form and appearance of the scanned objects; direct visualization in virtual tours; the acquisition of architectural documentation; the representation of appropriate models for 3D printing.

summary Questioning the importance and impact of design thinking methodologies in the architectural design studios is a backbone of architectural education in twenty first century. 3D printing and digital manufacturing are disruptive technologies that are changing architects and designers daily lives. These trends require new skills, based on a deep understanding of digital continuum from design to production, from generation to fabrication. This continuity transcends the merely instrumental contributions of a person-machine relationship to praxis, has begun to evolve as a medium that supports a continuous logic of design thinking and making. Design thinking methodologies associated with digital fabrication emerged as a leading technological and design issue of digital research and design. As designers, we are witnessing a no frontier between computational design and digital fabrication. For this paper is taken into consideration the work of two architecture studios that share a unique background on new methodologies by embracing the digital technology in their own practice. Their work reflects on new design methodologies facing the expansion of digital technology in architectural practice. This paper discusses the possibility of new design thinking methods driven by digital fabrication.

title Sensing Material Systems - Novel Design Strategies

summary The development of new building materials has decisively influenced the progression of architecture through the link between built form and available material systems. The new generation of engineered materials are no exception. However, to fully utilise these materials in the design process, there is a need for designers to understand how these new materials perform. In this paper we propose a method for sensing and representing the response of materials to external stimuli, at the early design stage, to help the designer establish a material awareness. We present a novel approach for embedding capacitive sensors into material models in order to improve material performance of designs. The method was applied and tested during two workshops, both discussed in this paper. The outcome is a method for anticipating engineered material behaviour.

summary Different geometric structures are investigated in the context of discrete surface representation. It is shown that minimal representations (i.e., polyhedra) can be provided by a surface-based method using nearest neighbors structures or by a volume-based method using the Delaunay triangulation. Both approaches are compared with respect to various criteria, such as space requirements, computation time, constraints on the distribution of the points, facilities for further calculations, and agreement with the actual shape of the object

summary The article presents an Assistive Technology product design, which aims to overcome the medical product idea, considering its aesthetic configuration, and aims to change the concept of mass production into custom manufacturing. The methodological process was to obtain the user’s body 3D model, for subsequent parameterization by using the Grasshopper’s Rhinoceros Plugin software. It is believed that the digital manufacturing process provides a more flexible production, especially in the prototyping and testing stages, which seems a competitive advantage over companies that do not use them.

summary Archetypes are psychological concepts described by the renowned Swiss psychologist Cari Jung. It is possible identify archetypal forms in eminent buildings of different regions and ages, recognizing archetypes as a multi-cultural liaison for various architectures. These concepts function as basic precedents of spatial design in different geographical and historical contexts. The emerging digital culture is establishing a plethora of virtual environments, through web-pages of the Internet, global TV, multimedia CD, video games and immersive devices. These virtual environments offer electronic activities and tools for architectural practice. In both senses, virtual architectures conforms to the visual and spatial characteristics of technologies. Thus, electronic capabilities establish digital habitats and references to contemporary architecture. Since virtual architectures are immaterial constructions, perceptual properties guide the spatial and formal design. In that sense, archetypes allow a basic vocabulary for the design of virtual architectures, linking them to cultural history and giving them a human orientation.

summary This project examines how interconnected artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted workflows can address the limitations of current language-based models and streamline machine-vision related tasks for architectural design. A precise relationship between text and visual feature representation is problematic and can lead to "ambiguity‚ in the interpretation of the morphological/tectonic complexity of a building. Textual representation of a design concept only addresses spatial complexity in a reductionist way, since the outcome of the design process is co-dependent on multiple interrelated systems, according to systems theory (Alexander 1968). We propose herewith a process of feature disentanglement (using low level features, i.e., composition) within an interconnected generative adversarial networks (GANs) workflow. The insertion of natural language models within the proposed workflow can help mitigate the semantic distance between different domains and guide the encoding of semantic information throughout a domain transfer process.

summary This paper emphasizes feedback from a pedagogical experiment in the context of teaching collaboration and design to multidisciplinary teams. A digital collaboration tool, a multi-touch table and collaboration software, was used as a support for discussion and decision-making for weekly project review meetings. The experiment participants' feedback on the use and usability of the digital collaboration tool highlights the potential for the use of synchronous collaboration technology and project-based learning for higher-level education. It also highlights the need for a transition towards implementation of digital tools at project review sessions.

summary This paper presents a comparative study of Dense Stereo Matching (DSM) tools to generate point cloud from digital photogrammetric restitution. The capability of four different state-of-the-art software systems as Photoscan (Agisoft), 3DF Zephyr Free (3Dflow), Remake (Autodesk) and Recap 360 (Autodesk) is examined to document a historical object. The main aspects compared are: processing time, export file formats, file size, quality and density of point clouds obtained from tools standard parameters. From the literature review, the analysis and the experiments, it is possible to evaluate the potential of DSM technique for the existing building documentation.

summary The concept of parametric design combines software and 3D modeling application that provides to designers, architects and engineers a new method for design development. This article aims to create a device for bicycle parking aided by a parametrization process using Grasshopper plug-in. Thus, we develop an algorithm in which its parameters can be modified accordingly to the esthetic-formal configuration required by the project. In order to evaluate the effect of a parametric value over the structure and resulting form, a rendering is created with each parameter change to visualize the resulting design interactively.

summary This article presents the scenario of programming use by architects and engineers, creating their own unique tools. The goal is to emulate and understand the phenomenon of BIM software customization by developing plug-ins that can explore the human-environment relationship. Demonstrates the process for building a plugin that seeks to equalize the theory of accessibility technical standards, visually impaired and architects. Uses Design Science Research methodologies to guide the construction of artifacts for specific practical problems and the Collaborative Design / Codesign to understand and know the users' expertise. It is argued that the low quality of projects that include elements for the orientation of the visually impaired in Brazil is often related to an unstructured methodology in which important aspects such as the real needs of this group and the human-environment relationship are neglected.

summary The technological breakthrough on photovoltaic facades and the high potential for installing photovoltaic (PV) systems in the city of Salvador are the motivation for this article. This case study explores the feasibility of implementing solar energy technology on a building facade, proposing a design method for optimizing insolation performance by the form-finding process in a parameterized shape. The goal was to generate a parametric design workflow, in which it could be found some facade shapes, generating triangle and quadrilateral supporting grids, leading to better results in the total amount of radiation in comparison to the basic flat facade. In these supporting grids were evaluated also the fitting in the distribution of quadrilateral commercial PV cells, measuring its geometric compatibility. By the results, it could be verified the gains and losses in PV potential in several instances obtained by the form-finding process, as the potentials to consider this in the design of every building.

summary Replacement operations, where an element at any topological level may be replaced by another element at the same or different topological level, are defined. Their potential as design tools which may be incorporated in a CAD system is investigated and demonstrated through the experimental implementation of two such operations in MARCOS, a Modeling Architectural Compositions System. MARCOS has been written in C. It is highly interactive and runs on an Apple Macintosh IIx. The two operations which have been implemented are the face -> volume and volume -> volume replacements. They were chosen for their potential as generators of architectural forms. Examples of architectural compositions produced through the use of replacement operations are also illustrated.

summary The formal education of future professionals requires training in four basic skills: abstraction, systemical thought, experimentation and collaboration. The capacity of abstraction allows to understand and manage realty in different ways in order to create opportunities to reinterpret and reorganize the information. The systemical thought promotes the distinction and the interpretation, teaching how they should be interpreted and how they can be refuted. They should learn how to analyze the reality from different points of view, under different conditions, which allows imagining new alternatives and possibilities. Through the experimentation we look for different possibilities and results and verify analogies and relevant differences, comparing with previous ideas. Another relevant aspect is the capacity of collaborating, sharing troubles and solutions, building new knowledge.
