summary Facade design is becoming increasingly complex, forcing architects to more frequently resort to analysis and optimization processes. However, these processes are time-consuming and require the coordination of multiple tools. Algorithmic Design (AD) has the potential to overcome these limitations through the use of algorithms implemented in Textual Programming Languages (TPLs) or Visual Programming Languages (VPLs). VPLs are more used in architecture due to their smoother learning curve and user-friendliness, but TPLs are better suited than VPLs for handling complex AD problems. To make TPLs more appealing to architects, we incorporated VPLs' features in the textual paradigm, namely, Visual Input Mechanisms (VIMs). In this paper, we propose an extension to an existing AD framework for the design exploration, analysis, and optimization of facades to support a TPL-based approach that handles VIMs.

summary Although structural performance has a crucial role in the overall design, its analysis is often postponed to later design stages. This largely occurs because analysis processes are time consuming and require the use of specific models and tools. This problem is then aggravated by the number of design variations that have to be analysed until an acceptable solution is found. However, the implementation of design changes at later stages is limited, as also is their impact on the solution's final performance. Fortunately, with algorithmic design, we can overcome these limitations, as it not only supports complex designs and facilitates design changes, but also automates the production of the specific models and their subsequent analysis and optimization. In this research we focus on buildings façades, proposing an algorithmic design system to support their design, structural analysis, and optimization.

summary The present paper describes an innovative design education system tried out at two different architecture schools in Brazil, with opposite approaches to the use of CAD. The experimental courses had two main goals: (1) to explore the use of logical operations in design, such as symmetry, recursion, parameterization, and combinatorial analysis, and (2) to apply these techniques with the use of the computers, using CAD not only as a representational tool, but rather as an explorative, customizable and programmable design aide for the creative process. The experiments resulted in a number of interesting compositions, design projects and programs, and assessment questionnaires revealed a real change in students’ attitude towards the use of CAD in architecture.

summary Ambiguity can be defined as the coexistence and/or coalescence of two incompatible aspects in the same reality. Ambiguity manifests itself * in pathologic processes occurring in matter, e.g. at the critical state of the solid ¬ ® liquid phase transformation. * during the process of measurement of quantum structures: a process formally very similar to the process of perception. * Systematically, in our mind, during the process of perception - especially during visual perception of paintings or acoustic perception of music.Therefore ambiguity is an intrinsic feature of the process of perception and an intriguing step in the way toward the formation of thought. Ambiguity is continuosly experienced in our mind: every act of perception culminates into the critical state of a dynamic instability of the interiorized image, where the incoherent heap of sensory stimuli merges into coherent visual or auditive thinking. In turn, since perception is essential for life, we should look at ambiguity not so much as to a fastidious travel companion, but rather as to a fixed course toward perception itself, scientific thought and aesthetic emotion: ambiguity is a permanent cultural value.

summary This paper aims to analyze interactive multimedia and visualization techniques for architectural theory publications. Unfortunately, the available literature about multimedia, visualization, hypertext and related systems in this area is not consistent. The majority of articles present descriptions of ideas, designs, and prototype or working systems claimed to be advantageous on the basis of the author’s intuition and lacking useful evaluation on their utility and ease of use for their intended users. The paper reviews the features of a research project outcome, which investigates an iconic building of the late 1930’s in Brazil. It examines the differences and similarities between a hypertext/multimedia system – a CD-ROM – with a comparable non-hypertext or non-computer product – a book – that deals with a specific subject: Architectural Theory. summary The cellular automaton concept, a reduced form of automaton concept (specific , in the beginning, to cybernetics and computer science) relates to the notion of local order, dear to Abraham Moles, and refers to the creation of a complex order in a set of cells ( or pixels for digital images) based on a simple law which determine the colorimetric state of each pixelaccording to the colorimetric state of its nearest neighbours. I will examine one-dimensional automata and then two-dimensional ones. I will study theirmorphogenetical properties in the case of neutral values and then of chromatic ones. I will talk about my own creative work, closely related to an "orientated morphogenesis".This latter has its place quite naturally in Generative Art . I will look at paradigmatic explorations,parametric creations, programming perturbations, conditional choices, "chromatisation" and hybridation. To finish, I will describe the last stage of the work which consists, if necessary, of reworking the initial files so as to modify then through "software creation".

summary Finding automated methods to track the presence of hu- mans can help designers understand workplaces. Methods to under- stand the patterns of human movement in workplaces using beacons, badges and sensors are being developed. Whilst the results are promis- ing, they can be costly and may require the manual setup of expensive equipment. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is widely adopted due to its high degree of accuracy, however, is inapplicable in indoor environments due to the physical limitations of satellite attenuation. There is no comparably ubiquitous positioning system that can be used to make device-driven position tracking that is specifically adapted to indoor environments. With the increasing popularity of phones, watches and fitness tracking bands with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, we explore the potential of these wireless radios as a low-cost alternative to monitor human movement. As the costs of technology continue to decrease, the means to build a low-cost tracker through WiFi and Bluetooth enabled devices in an indoor environment become possible. Furthermore, is it possible to develop a low-cost tracking device using only commodity hardware that is able to accu- rately automate and record presence in space with sufficient veracity?

summary For some years ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has been worldwide a hot topic and, especially in the European academic environment, a very fashionable word. No matter where the road would lead to, almost any ICT related project was welcomed as the next step towards a brand new and even better system of education. In the meantime CAAD (Computer Aided Architectural Design) plays a role of utmost importance during a range of stages in the design process or building project.In this situation a research project is set up to develop an educational environment where CAAD meets ICT. The first application was turned down as the proposed (ICT) technology wasn’t available, according to committee judging. After proving them wrong, the second application was more successful. Even though the project was set up for local values, education in CAAD and related topics in Belgium, it was situated in a networked (internet) world.After running the project for a period of two years a list of pros and cons can be made up. Moreover, both local and on a global scale, ideas have changed.

summary Building with additive manufacturing is an increasingly relevant research topic in the field of Construction 4.0, where designers are seeking higher levels of automation, complexity and precision compared to conventional construction methods. As an answer to the increasing problem of scarcity of resources, the presented research exploits the potential of Fused Deposition Modelling in the production of a lightweight load-responsive cellular lattice structure at the architectural scale. The article offers an extensive insight into the computational processes involved in the design, engineering, analysis, optimization and fabrication of a material-efficient, fully 3D printed, lattice structure. Material, structure and manufacturing features are integrated within the design development in a comprehensive computational workflow. The article presents methods and results while discussing the project as a material-efficient approach to complex structures.

summary Whilst it is often argued that computers have an positive role to play in the educational process, design tutors frequently view computer based design work as being of inferior quality to that of designs produced by traditional means. This may be no fault of the technology, but more likely a consequence of a student’s inappropriate use of that technology. It could be argued that part of the role of the design tutor is to encourage students to use technology in a more appropriate way, rather than to totally discourage the use of computers in their designs. The introduction of computer technologies has led to new ways of designing, which may be very different to the methods of design that are traditionally taught. This paper proposes that the successful implementation of CAAD in Architectural design education, can only be achieved if design tutors fully appreciate and embrace these new design methodologies, in a way which extends beyond the need to simply accept the new technology.

summary Despite an apparently common assumption that science and myth are totally incompatible approaches to architecture, especially as related to architectural design, the author argues that science and myth are both explanations of phenomena, each different, but both valid. Positing the desirability of a research and design process that would take advantage of both approaches, it addresses the problems of existing conceptual categories and the possible productive relationship between myth and science for architecture. The investigation has developed a new experimental methodology for assessing building designs and an enabling tool “ASSET”. A first VR model of a building has been produced as a vehicle for evaluating the methodology and ASSET and, incidentally, influencing the design of the building. An experi-ment has been completed to assess if design constraints have been fulfilled.

summary This paper describes the integration of machine intelligence into an immersive architectural sculpture that interacts dynamically with users and the environment. The system is conceived to function as an architectural envelope that might transfer air using a distributed array of components. The sculpture includes a large array of interconnected miniature structural and kinetic elements, each with local sensing, actuation, and machine intelligence. We demonstrate a model in which these autonomous, interconnected agents develop cooperative behaviour to maximize airflow. Agents have access to sensory data about their local environment and ‘learn’ to move air through the working of a genetic algorithm. Introducing distributed and responsive machine intelligence builds on work done on evolving embodied intelligence (Floreano et al. 2004) and architectural ‘geotextile’ sculptures by Philip Beesley and collaborators (Beesley et al. 1996-2006). The paper contributes to the general field of interactive art by demonstrating an application of machine intelligence as a design method. The objective is the development of coherent distributed kinetic building envelopes with environmental control functions. A cultural context is included, discussing dynamic paradigms in responsive architecture.

summary Space accepts pervasive technologies as an architectural feature inherent to design. As such, architecture is developing various links to video surveillance, crafting a new use and a new user of space. Consequently, a new type and layer of interaction is taking place in architectural space. We extend the experimental nature of 3D Virtual Environments to encompass our surveillance studies, and explore the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV). This paper contributes to the thinking of the architect positioning herself as the user of space while designing, replacing her as an empowered orchestrator of all the technologies attached to buildings.

summary The process of overcoming the digital divide has led to the formation of common interest groups. Network communication has become not only a mean, but also a conditioning for the horizontal structure of groups that are also dedicated to transforming urban spaces. Known as processes of bottom-up urbanism, these groups add virtual layers to urban space, and acting in a cybrid way they make inseparable the actions that occur on the virtual or material environment. This research is dedicated to understanding the dynamics of communication in a Facebook group created in one of these bottom-up urbanism processes.
