title Integrating AI Image Generators to First-Year Design Studio: “Invisible Cities” Reimagined with AI Subtitle

summary AI technology has been widely used for image generating during the design process both in academia and industry. There are hesitations to integrate AI image-generating software into design education due to copyright and ethical issues. However, its spread is inevitable, and students should be aware of the pros and cons of using AI technologies. Hence, this study aims to examine the effect of AI image generators on the design process of first-year design students. Passages from Italo Calvino’s book “Invisible Cities” were given to the students, and they were expected to work in groups of 2-3 to design 3D physical models abstracted from the scenarios by the book’s utopian cities. Since AI image generators work based on text prompts, the students extracted keywords from the book’s chapters to generate images. With the support of the images generated by the AI image generators, they developed final visuals and abstract physical models of utopian cities. Based on the outcomes, we observed that AI image generators were used for three main goals by the students: (1) spatial organization, (2) details of the modules, and (3) abstraction/realization of the spatial atmosphere. Based on this analysis, we discussed the role of AI image generators among the polars of being a tool and co-designer in the design process.

summary Circular Economy (CE) is a new production and consumption model aiming to redefine processes sustainably by adopting the "take-make-reuse-recycle" concept in all industries, including the architecture-construction industry. Studies show that we spend more than the current amount of Earth's natural resources and need to reduce global resource production and consumption by a third. This paper investigates the "design by research" method to translate theoretical circular economy concepts into practical village-scale design activities in urban + architecture studio education. The studio aims to develop a design model for circular villages that are affordable, sustainable, and socially connected. Circular villages can collectively positively impact the land and each other. For this study, Sille village in Konya–Turkiye has been analyzed from macro-region scale to micro village scale through the year-long M. Arch graduate urban + architecture design studio. Three main approaches were prominent in developing circular/sustainable planning and design strategies for the village: (1) self-sufficiency in terms of resources, food, energy, and workforce, (2) continuity of natural-cultural values and aspects along with the associative collective memory and contextual relationships and (3) utilizing digital tools in the application of circularity concepts. Exploring the potentials and limits of digital tools to accomplish the circularity principles at urban and architectural design levels brings novel insights to the design notion in architectural education.

summary In this paper we report on the ongoing development of a toolkit to support the design of column and beam layouts for reinforced concrete structures in China. We present a visual, human- and machine-readable notation for architects and structural engineers to rapidly model column and beam layouts, as well as our underlying considerations. In conjunction with the toolkit, which consists of a CAD package, an editor, a parser, and an interpreter, the notation addresses aspects of local construction practice and supports design considerations including appearance, structural viability, constructability, and cost.

summary There is a strong relation between playful learning and the environment children inhabit. An environment can easily turn into a medium for play while its patterns and children's interactions with these patterns can turn into experiences of learning. Developed upon findings from an analog pilot study and built with an open source electronic platform and piezoelectric sensors, our prototype translates children's physical actions into responses of an interactive device. Experiments with children using the prototype support, in part, a unifying approach to designing playful learning environments embedded with tangible spatial interaction.

summary This paper takes the 25th anniversary conference of CAADRIA as an opportunity to reflect on the association as well as the changing landscape of CAAD research in Asia. Following a discussion of CAADRIA and its organisational structures and procedures, the paper analyses and reflects on past and current developments of our research community. To this end, CAADRIA publication keywords are examined to visually map the development of the association since such keywords started to be recorded consistently 12 years ago. The paper calls for a revived critical discourse on fundamental questions of our field in general, and some disconnects between CAADRIA's mission and its current direction in particular. It concludes with a discussion of potential directions for CAADRIA for the coming 25 years.

title Machine learning in the discipline of architecture: A review on the research trends between 2014 and 2020

summary Abstract Through the recent technological developments within the fourth industrial revolution, artificial intelligence (AI) studies have had a huge impact on various disciplines such as social sciences, information communication technologies (ICTs), architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). Regarding decision-making and forecasting systems in particular, AI and machine learning (ML) technologies have provided an opportunity to improve the mutual relationships between machines and humans. When the connection between ML and architecture is considered, it is possible to claim that there is no parallel acceleration as in other disciplines. In this study, and considering the latest breakthroughs, we focus on revealing what ML and architecture have in common. Our focal point is to reveal common points by classifying and analyzing current literature through describing the potential of ML in architecture. Studies conducted using ML techniques and subsets of AI technologies were used in this paper, and the resulting data were interpreted using the bibliometric analysis method. In order to discuss the state-of-the-art research articles which have been published between 2014 and 2020, main subjects, subsets, and keywords were refined through the search engines. The statistical figures were demonstrated as huge datasets, and the results were clearly delineated through Sankey diagrams. Thanks to bibliometric analyses of the current literature of WOS (Web of Science), CUMINCAD (Cumulative Index about publications in Computer Aided Architectural Design supported by the sibling associations ACADIA, CAADRIA, eCAADe, SIGraDi, ASCAAD, and CAAD futures), predictable data have been presented allowing recommendations for possible future studies for researchers.

summary The making of ancient gold wreaths is one of the unique and forgotten crafting activities, which has influenced various modern designs such as jewelries, furniture, wall decorations and ornaments. Wreath designs stand as good examples for hands-on material computation, since they are made from gold, which is known for its extraordinary durability and malleability. In this study, we try to decompose the overall rules by investigating the design development of ancient gold wreaths. The crafting activity stand as an essential attribute, which alters visual grammar rules. By decomposing the visual rules, we are able to define the relations between crafting, material properties, making techniques and visual appearance.

summary This paper approaches the literature that combines the fields of Architectural Computing and Architecture and Urbanism produced in Latin America during the first two decades of the 21st Century. The main objective is to map the advancement of Digital Technology in Architecture and Urbanism in the context of the Third Industrial Revolution, in order to identify perspectives towards a Fourth Industrial Revolution. As methodology was applied a chronological survey of the literature produced in book format, predominantly printed in the 21st Century by Latin Americans researches in leading digital themes. At last, it can be verified that the production is still very scarce and still has not incorporated, in a significant way, the themes related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

summary Since 2008 the preference for using different programming methods (Rhinoscript) had been analyzed using blogs. Searching for answers to explain the negative tendency of this year (from 48,063 to 16,332), a second repository was created (Grasshopper) featuring interactive methods and techniques. It has been discovered that of the five geographic regions analyzed Latin America is the only one that preferred the interactive interface (18% over programming). This shows that we are still keeping a strong dependency on the use of stable and safe technologies over disruptive ones that proved to be more efficient in design and fabrication.

summary This paper proposes basic design instruction as a possible setting for introducing the concept of design computing to architecture students in the first year of their education. The argument is based on two viewpoints. The first extends the positivistic understanding of computation to visual reasoning in general. The second recognizes visual design activity as a reasoning process. The author suggests that, in order for computation to be embedded in the ways of design thinking, an understanding of it needs to be built-in, both as concept and as practice, into learning about the design process. The study draws attention particularly to basic design instruction as a setting for design and computation to be learnt concurrently. Examples from the first year curriculum at Middle East Technical University are given to illustrate the discussion.

summary Two exhibits made evident that complex shapes generated through scripts are the attention focus of both educators and professionals. These projects did not start with traditional representation conventions (front view, plan and cross section) but with biological, geometrical or mathematical references, where patterns are recurrent. Using scripts it is possible to write and represent possibilities; blogs allow the publication of the results. In this context, a blog was created (2008) to publish methods and subjects extracted from workshops and manuals featuring rhinoscripting. During a year more than 57000 users accessed; the results of this documentation are hereby presented.

summary We analyse the problem of creating didactic material for teaching and evaluating mathematics in the first year of a School of Architecture. By using visual programming, science professor used codes (formulae) to represent in a software their proposals, instead of drawing them themselves. Through this experience we create a database of codes with computational solutions that allows faculty to modify, reuse, visualise and print in the same platform that she students will use while developing their designs. In this way we aim to maximise the link between mathematics and design as fundamental base for the control of complex shapes.

summary This study offers two key contributions. Firstly, it introduces the concept and framework of "section grammars" (SecG), which is derived from Stiny's shape grammars. Secondly, it investigates the potential of SecG in generating existing and alternative section layouts for ancient underground cities. The case study focuses on Derinkuyu, which is located in Cappadocia, Turkey. The study thoroughly examines the components of the Derinkuyu underground city, presents its parameters, and explains the rules based on the relations between these components. The study employs these elements and rules to generate an existing satellite city as well as a new synthetic satellite city. Finally, the paper discusses the outcomes of implementing the SecG framework. This study contributes to shape grammar studies by integrating the subtractive (carving) approach and the topological relations observed in underground cities into the proposed framework.

summary In moments when the artisanship tradition seems to disappear because of industrial production, we analyze cases where digital fabrication and visual programming were used in Latin American craft, encouraged by architects with skills in digital tools. The situations confront artisans with access to digital platforms and internet, use of learned skills, and the need to modify the technological level in their products and processes. Regional initiatives, which could change contemporary design history in the region with the establishing of a trans-disciplinary systematized synergy, show that traditional materials are used and unique components maintain their originality, from a region that attempts to enter into new global markets.

summary In this paper we present a method of synthesizing data in the narrative discourse of two architecture publications, in order to analyze, compare and explore to what extent it is possible to understand a book on different abstract levels using static data. The information in the book is reorganized and shown in different diagrams, used as a didactic visualization method. This allows the representation of a set of kinetic information that cannot be perceived simultaneously.

summary The contemporary “built environment” as conceived by designers – be it actual or virtual; be it architecture, landscape, industrial products or, more purely, art – is increasingly generated using powerful computational tools that are shaping the culture of the design professions, so much so that the phrase “digital culture” aptly applies. Designers are rightly inclined to believe that the emerging contemporary landscape – especially in thriving global cities like New York, London and Tokyo – has recently been and will continue to be shaped in important ways by digital design. That will surely be the case. However, design does not exist in a material vacuum. Someone pays for it. This essay argues that the primary shaper of global cities today is another “digital culture”, one defined by the confluence of professions and institutions that constitute our global financial markets. The essay explores the common origins of these two cultures – design and finance; the prescient insights of Archigram into the cybernetic future of cities; the spatial implications of nomadic “digitized” capital and the hazards of desensitizing – in many ways, dematerializing – the professional practices of design and finance. The purpose of the essay is not to establish primacy of one over the other. Especially in the case of urban design, they are interdependent. The purpose is to explore the connection.

summary Teaching architecture is not primarily an instructional process but rather a process of interaction and experience. In this context multimedia material can be used to provide an active educational environment where students learn by doing. To yield an effective learning system expertise from various fields have to be combined. This paper emphasizes the technological challenges of multimedia applications in architectural design education. We discuss two research prototype systems and analyze the influence of the underpinning technology on the performance of the overall system design. Finally we give technical requirements that are demanded for next generation systems and propose a framework for concerted research action.

summary Due to the rising interest in urban visualization, a number of issues have emerged that need to be solved for practical application. The most prominent of these issues are: visualization performance and security. Visualization speed concerns the usability of urban visualization. In order to make urban visualization practical, it is necessary to completely hide all latency of loading data. Here we will demonstrate techniques like multi-threading, different rendering methods and level-of-detail that our platform uses to maintain interactive frame-rates in the face of the large amounts of data that are common in urban visualization environments. The secondissue, securing the geometry and image information contained in an urban model is of eminent importance for the owner of the data. We will point out a number of techniques that have been incorporated in our viewing platform in order to maintain a high level of data security: data compression and encryption, obfuscation of access keys, compression and encryption of executables. While perfect security is an unattainable goal, the multi-staged approach of security in our system significantly raises the cost of illegally obtaining access to the geometry or image data. By demonstrating solutions for both issues our framework serves as a viable platform for urban visualization.
