summary This collaborative research project demonstrates the viability of using robotic fabrication and industrial polymer technologies in the fabrication of highly versatile and individually designed acoustically performative walls. Driven by the formal parameters which significantly impact the acoustics of a space through diffusion, in particular differentiated and aperiodic surface depth, a customizable system and fabrication process was developed in which an injection moulded element and a secondary insert are placed uniquely by robot and then joined through a process of ultra-sonic welding.

summary Mesh-Mould is a novel robotic fabrication system for complex, non-standard concrete structures. The system folds together formwork and reinforcement, the two most labour intensive aspects of concrete constructions and offers an alternative approach to the current modes of prefabrication by suggesting an in-situ fabrication process (Figure 1). The paper outlines the development of the Form-work/Reinforcing Meshes through several iterations of physical and digital tests. Initially starting from simple triangulated 3D lattices, the structures evolved to become more complex and differentiated. The incorporating of flow enhancing ducts and surface perimeters with diverse surface aperture densities facilitates an optimal concrete flow and material distribution within the mesh.

summary The recent convergence of computational design and digital fabrication has made new forms of architectural materialization possible. A workshop conducted at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology investigated how differentiated lightweight metal structures may be designed and fabricated under these new conditions. The workshop aim was to complete three such structures; each one is aggregated from aluminum profiles that are robotically assembled according to computationally driven geometric logics. The key challenge was to enable participants, assumed to lack programming and robotic fabrication experience, to design and construct their structures within imposed time constraints. This paper describes the subsequent development of accessible computational design tools and a robust robotic fabrication method for the workshop, and highlights the key decisions taken with their implementation. The workshop results are discussed and the design tools evaluated with respect to them. The paper concludes by recommending an approach to developing computational design tools which emphasizes the importance of usability and integration with the fabrication process.

summary In digital design-to-fabrication workflows in architecture, in which digitally controlled machines perform complex fabrication tasks, all design decisions are typically made before production. In such processes, the formal definition of the final shape is explicitly inscribed into the design model by means of corresponding step-by-step machine instructions. The increasing use of augmented reality (AR) technologies for digital fabrication workflows, in which people are instructed to carry out complex fabrication tasks via AR interfaces, creates an opportunity to question and adjust the level of detail and the nature of such explicit formal definitions. People’s cognitive abilities could be leveraged to integrate explicit machine intelligence with implicit human knowledge and creativity, and thus to open up digital fabrication to intuitive and spontaneous design decisions during the building process. To address this question, this paper introduces open-ended Prototype-as-Artefact fabrication workflows that examine the possibilities of designing and creative choices while building in a human-robot collaborative setting. It describes the collaborative assembly of a complex timber structure with alternating building actions by two people and a collaborative robot, interfacing via a mobile device with object tracking and AR visualization functions. The spatial timber assembly being constructed follows a predefined grammar but is not planned at the beginning of the process; it is instead designed during fabrication. Prototype-as-Artefact thus serves as a case study to probe the potential of both intuitive and rational aspects of building and to create new collaborative work processes between humans and machines.

summary In this work in progress report we present the results of a four week design studio with graduate students as part of a broader research project on investigating digital additive fabrication processes and their implications on architectural design.In a simple test arrangement we realized the digital design and additive fabrication of two by three meters brick walls. The use of bricks, being the primary module for construction, and at a relatively coarse resolution, allowed us to concentrate on the design of completely programmed walls encompassing material-dependent parameters. The resulting prototypes depict the great potential of the integration of the design and the fabrication process. Non-standardized solutions can be easily accomplished as the design data is directly used to control the fabrication process. In using an additive digital fabrication process, a novel architectural product of the kind “brick wall” emerged, which could not have been conceived or fabricated manually.

summary This paper presents a computational design method that integrates capabilities to manage material and fabrication tolerances occurring during the robotic assembly of spatial timber structures with tight-fit connections. This is achieved by building a data-base of tolerances measured during the robotic assembly process, which then allow for tolerance simulation as part of an assembly sequence planning method based on the Kruskal algorithm. Through a combination of optimization and linear regression techniques, the developed method enables designers to minimize deviations of their designs and diminish the risks of misfits during fabrication. In consequence, it allows for tolerance-aware designs.

summary Brick construction has a long and rich structural and aesthetic traditions in architecture, which can be traced back to the origins of our civilization. However, despite the remarkable works of Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Kahn, Eladio Dieste or Alvar Aalto in the 20th century, the application of this construction process to address more irregular geometries is very difficult to be achieved by conventional manual means. In this context, the last decade assisted to emergence of robotic applications in architecture. While Gramazio & Kohler looked for solving non-standard brick structures, others, like the S.A.M. robot initiative, are interested in improving the productivity in the fabrication of regular brick structures. By surveying the recent advances on bricklaying automation, this paper is interested in reflecting on the actual role of manual brickwork. In doing so, the authors present the Brick Tower experiment developed at the DFL/CEAU/FAUP, where two different fabrications processes are critically compared: a robotic and a manual one, which is aided by a video projection technique. By describing and illustrating this experiment, the authors argue that it is possible to expand the traditional craft of bricklaying by devising simple strategies to increase the human capacity to understand and materialize more elaborated geometries. This research avenue can be relevant if one considers that manual work should remain the most common form of brickwork practice in the next decades.

summary This research proposes a novel approach for interactive visualizations of acoustic datasets for architects and non-acoustic experts. It introduces a series of simple acoustic properties for users with basic knowledge of acoustics and describes methods for low- and high-dimensional data visualizations. It describes the computational workflow and uses a design scenario to demonstrate the proposed visualizations. Finally, it discusses the challenges of developing such methods, their advantages, limitations, and future work.

summary The use of generative systems has been widely investigated in the architectural design process through different procedures and levels of autonomy to generate form.The digression from abstract pre- existing notions of vocabulary and rules – even when resulting in emergent forms – to address complex real- world contexts is yet a challenging undertaking.This paper explores incorporating context in the process of designing using generative systems from ideation to fabrication, and explores the relationship between the emergent nature of generative design and the situated act of designing while using generative design tools.A course offered for 3rd year architecture students at the Department of Architecture, Ain Shams University, Egypt, was designed for this purpose. 110 students employed systems including shape grammars, L- systems, fractals and cellular automata, to design and fabricate 8 group projects.A discussion around emergence and situatedness is presented, with special attention to the designing process from ideation to fabrication.

summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary Several architectural studies tackled the methodologies of teaching the architectural design subject in general and their relation to the use of computer in particular. The trends varied in accordance with the research that is relevant to the subject due to its importance in generating new architectural models, but it didn’t crystallize a theoretical framework that identifies clear and specific vocabularies related to the methodology of teaching the computer-aided architectural design. The current study discusses the importance of this concept in an attempt to explore the particular problem represented by the non-clarity of this methodology in the department of architecture in Mosul University. Therefore, the problem of the research crystallized and its objective and its methodology were identified and this was represented by constructing a theoretical framework which includes several main items. Then the theoretical framework was applied to selected projects of architectural department students in order to manifest the particularity of teaching the computer-aided architectural design. Results showed the distinction of this department as this methodology led to the derivation of different architectural products in accordance with the particular effects using the computer technologies. The results also manifested the change in the architectural design trend that was caused due to the digital intervention in the way of the student's thinking from one hand and the components and the elements of the building from the other hand that the quality of the design can be improved by using the computer and the quantity will be more in shorter time.

summary This study describes a didactic method for the introduction of parametric design in graphic and digital geometry courses in architectural training. It started with the recognition of the concept of parametric design and the investment in the appropriation of Grasshopper associated with Rhinoceros. Paper folding exercises were configured both physically and in the digital space. Through an interactive dynamic between traditional processes, by hand and digital, and parametric design, a learning path was defined in a playful manner which highlights the differences between methods of representation and its implications for the design action starting from a first semester of training.

summary This paper began by architectural drawings’ study in the Middle Ages, among them, the drawings of the Villard de Honnecourt’s sketchbook, foreman of the thirteenth century. Through these drawings we could analyzed how the construction and design process of Gothic cathedrals was developed in the construction site. This study aimed to analyze the difficulties in the construction process by reading the drawings, as well as its own richness graphic. The project presents the redesign and the analysis of the Honnecourt and Gothic cathedrals as well as the execution of reduced physical models.

summary Traditionally media facades have been created using 2D surfaces, not dissimilar to televisions. As computational architecture continues to explore non-Euclidian shapes it is a logical process to investigate the use and possibilities of emerging complex curved surfaces for the display of media content to match architectural design aspirations with demands of ubiquitous city concepts of penetrating surfaces with information. Drawing on existing architectural knowledge of ruled surfaces the paper outlines the implementation of adopting existing principles from architecture and mathematics to contemporary discussions in media architecture. It demonstrates that ruled surfaces can function as media facades by simulating ten different ruled surface types in Grasshopper and overlaying them with different video content. Based on the results the team proceeded to build a 1:1 prototype of a hyperbolic paraboloid to test if the simulated results in the computer matched with the physical model. The prototype was further tested using media content to observe the visibility of the display from various viewing positions. Based on the findings the paper concludes that ruled surface media facades are feasible. This investigation, its proposed hypothesis, methodology, implications, significance and evaluation are presented in the paper.

summary In this paper we report on the ongoing development of a toolkit to support the design of column and beam layouts for reinforced concrete structures in China. We present a visual, human- and machine-readable notation for architects and structural engineers to rapidly model column and beam layouts, as well as our underlying considerations. In conjunction with the toolkit, which consists of a CAD package, an editor, a parser, and an interpreter, the notation addresses aspects of local construction practice and supports design considerations including appearance, structural viability, constructability, and cost.

summary This article aims to describe the ephemeral qualities that typography acquires in the digital context, caused by the polyvalence of the algorithmic code, which, from generative programming, allows the user to interact with the typographic object. These reflection are realized through the study of four projects: “Lettree” (2004), “Pyrographie” (2005), “Falling in Love” (2016) and “He liked Thick Word Soup” (2014). The observations were made by drawing a comparison between the concept of “matter” in the computational scenario proposed by the design philosopher Vilém Flusser (2015) and the quality of “fluidity” observed in the images created by digital generative programs.
