summary This paper is part of the research on Generative Design and is inspired by the ideas spread by the following paradigms: the Internet of Things (Auto-ID Center, 1999) and the Pervasive/Ubiquitous Computing (Weiser, 1993). Particularly, the research describes a number of case studies and, in detail, the experimental prototype of an interactive-design object: “Grow-1”. The general assumptions of the study are as follows: a) Developing the experimental prototype of a smart-design object (Figure 1) in terms of interaction with man, with regard to the specific conditions of the indoor environment as well as in relation to the internet/web platforms. b) Setting up a project research based on the principles of Generative Design.c) Formulating and adopting a methodology where computational design techniques and interactive prototyping ones converge, in line with the principles spread by the new paradigms like the Internet of Things.

summary This paper discusses the process of production of the prototype of R.I.C.A. (Catas Altas Ideas Network), a digital interface to trigger social transformation in the town of Catas Altas, Minas Gerais, Brazil, which is part of the Masters “From discourse to dialogue: urban digital interfaces for the recovery of the public realm”. It introduces Catas Altas and its social inequality showing the imbalance between the power of the mining companies that explore the town and its powerless population. It then presents the action research steps that informed the design of the interface R.I.C.A., both technically and socially, and the first use of the prototype empowering the community to discuss the public space.

summary Simultaneous interdisciplinary architectural design from the very start of a project faces challenges in properly sharing information across disciplines. This research developed a method and related digital tool to improve collaborative design and aimed at making selected information to be shared faster and more transparently. The method consists of developing alternative parametric solutions for different parts of the design in such a way that crucial parameters form a link between these parts. The digital tool has been developed for Grasshopper and permits synchronic (real-time over the Internet) and a-synchronic sharing of these parameters. The design alternatives are evaluated with specific criteria, pros and cons in an Internet Forum and discussed via a video-conferencing tool. Decisions are then taken in a collaborative manner through voting. The paper describes the method based on a case study.

summary This article relates an experiment linking two types of forms: geometric forms generated from algorithms by mathematical functions and sonic forms generated from algorithms and linked to the first. In order to formalize a graphical and musical object called “sonic object" were used the following tools: the environment of a graphic program, the C# language and the Midi-dot-Net musical library. Diverse equations are used to generate the geometric shapes which generate periodical, cyclical and circular movements. Other equations used in the experiment are formulas adapted from the Edward Lorenz's Strange Attractor. Current research into the problem of the generation of patterns of movement, such as that of Jules Moloney, and research which deals with algorithms which generate shapes, such as that of Robert Krawczyk, have been taken as references and parameters for comparison for this work..

summary This paper describes an adaptive decision-making design framework for investigating the synergies between aesthetically-driven and performance-driven criteria, specifically in designing the material behaviour of an electroresponsive building envelope system. An immersive and interactive simulation environment developed in the C++ programming language provides a computational tool for testing the visual and energetic performance of a dynamic building envelope as it negotiates bioclimatic energy flows with participants’ aesthetic preferences and interactions. Experiments in bioresponsive feedback loops examine the impacts that user engagement and real-time energy performance feedback have on participants’ design choices. Preliminary results demonstrate that exposure to energy performance feedback and to the collective design choices of multiple users leads to adaptive decision-making that favours synergistic system performance with the potential for increased socio-ecological connections. Critically, this research provides new methods for supporting the design of emerging material behaviours for dynamic building envelopes that can negotiate multiple performance criteria.

summary Presently there is a progressive tendency to incorporate parametric design strategies in urban planning and design. Although the computational technologies that allow it are recent, fundamental theories and thinking processes behind it can be traced back to the work conducted at the Institute for Lightweight Structures (IL) in Stuttgart, between the 1960’s and 1980’s. This paper describes an experimental urban research work based on Frei Otto and Eda Schaur's thoughts on unplanned settlements, and on the form-finding experiences carried out at IL. By exploring the digital development of parametric and algorithmic interactive models, two urban design proposals were developed for a site in Porto city. Out of this experience, this paper suggests that today the act of design can benefit from a deeper understanding of the natural processes of occupation and connection.

summary This work was motivated by the relationship my family has with the radio apparatus. My grand mother, her brothers and sisters, they were the first generation exposed to the radio in Colombia and always have had numerous radios in their homes to avoid loneliness, to keep informed with the news and to listen to the music. Even today, every single room at their homes has a radio on with a different transmission; some of them are transportable or mobile. An interview with my grandmother was the starting point to recognize the 2 concepts that lead the project: mobility and sound experience.

summary The paper details computational mapping and modeling techniques from an ongoing design research project titled Irradiated Shade, which endeavors to develop and calibrate a computational toolset to uncover, represent, and design for the unseen dangers of ultraviolet radiation, a growing yet underexplored threat to cities, buildings, and the bodies that inhabit them. While increased shade in public spaces has been advocated as a strategy for “mitigation [of] climate change” (Kapelos and Patterson 2014), it is not a panacea to the threat. Even in apparent shade, the body is still exposed to harmful, ambient, or “scattered” UVB radiation. The study region is a binational metroplex, a territory in which significant atmospheric pollution and the effects of climate change (reduced cloud cover and more “still days” of stagnant air) amplify the “scatter” of ultraviolet wavelengths and UV exposure within shade, which exacerbates urban conditions of shade as an “index of inequality” (Bloch 2019) and threatens public health. Exposure to indirect radiation correlates to the amount of sky visible from the position of an observer (Gies and Mackay 2004). The overall size of a shade structure, as well as the design of openings along its sides, can greatly impact the UV protection factor (UPF) (Turnbull and Parisi 2005). Shade, therefore, is more complex than ubiquitous urban and architectural “sun” and “shadow studies” are capable of representing, as such analyses flatten the three-dimensional nature of radiation exposure and are “blind” to the ultraviolet spectrum. “Safe shade” is contingent on the nuances of the surrounding built environment, and designers must be empowered to observe and respond to a wider context than current representational tools allow.

summary The integration of performance evaluation into the building design process becomes increasingly important in order to respond to demands on contemporary design with respect to the future of our built and natural environments. This paper presents work on the second iteration of an implementation of a design performance optimization framework that attempts to respond to the challenges of integrating analysis and optimization into the design process. Main challenges addressed are speed of feedback through implementation on the cloud, utilizing parallelization of computations and availability of results in the computational context of the model through leveraging the parametric nature of the application; The goal is to enable designers in their decision-making throughout the design process with focus on earlier phases of the design process during which changes can be implemented faster and at much lower costs than in later phases of design or even during construction and occupation.

summary Technological innovation has been an important driving force in architecture, enabling and inspiring architects and engineers by giving them new tools for solving existing problems. In the last two decades, the exploration of digital design and fabrication technologies has stimulated the development of a variety of interests and strategies to materialize increasingly complex and customized solutions in architecture, with traditional building materials. Reinforced concrete is the most widely used material in the building industry today and throughout its history has been the subject of vast research into its performance as a construction material and its tectonic potential in architecture. As such, the introduction of digital fabrication processes in concrete construction represents the biggest prospect for renovation of our built environment and at the same time, presents particular difficulties and opportunities, which are now being addressed. In an effort to investigate the alternative design and material possibilities in concrete emerging from the use of digital fabrication technologies in architecture, this paper proposes a focused view of digital fabrication applied to concrete construction with two areas of research. By framing the research in the context of reference works in concrete architecture of the 20th century, this paper describes and illustrates taxonomy of existing and possible types of integration of digital fabrication technologies in concrete architecture in the realms of Practice and Research.This characterization allows the authors to frame the relation between material, technology and architecture in different environments regarding the same material, extracting a clear image of existing processes, their potential and shortcomings, as well as expectations for future developments.

summary This paper describes part of a wider research that aimed at using Shape Grammar to generate more diverse and interesting urban spaces in Brazilian Social Housing developments.A shape grammar corresponding to design patterns was inferred from the PREVI Lima urban plan developed by C.Alexander [1] in the 1970s.The grammar was inferred from the plan layout and from the text instructions (or pattern descriptions) presented by Alexander, and can be applied to design new plans within a wider formal universe than what the plan layout would suggest.The final section of the paper points towards the development of generic grammars as a way of encapsulating good qualities of certain design projects and applying them to new situations.

summary This paper develops a multi-agent computational model to simulate the effects of designer-user interactions on the design of products, interactions that are both direct and indirect. The architecture of an agent-based computational system is described, with emphasis on how it models situated design computing and cognition, including both designer and consumer agents. Indicative results obtained from running simulations are presented. The primary contribution is to demonstrate that situated design computing and cognition can be modelled using Computational Social Science methods.

title Design variable analysis and generation for performance-based parametric modeling in architecture

summary Many architectural designers recognize the potential of parametric models as a worthwhile approach to performance- driven design. A variety of performance simulations are now possible within computational design environments, and the framework of design space exploration allows users to generate and navigate various possibilities while considering both qualitative and quantitative feedback. At the same time, it can be difficult to formulate a parametric design space in a way that leads to compelling solutions and does not limit flexibility. This article proposes and tests the extension of machine learning and data analysis techniques to early problem setup in order to interrogate, modify, relate, transform, and automatically generate design variables for architectural investigations. Through analysis of two case studies involving structure and daylight, this article demonstrates initial workflows for determining variable importance, finding overall control sliders that relate directly to performance and automatically generating meaningful variables for specific typologies.

title Simulation Heuristics for Urban Design

summary Designing simulations for urban design not only requires explicit performance criteria of planning standards but a synthesis of implicit design objectives, that we will call ‘purpose rules’, with computational approaches. The former would at most lead to automation of the existing planning processes for speed and evaluation, the latter to an understanding of perceived urban qualities and their effect on the planning of cities. In order to transform purpose rules into encoded principles we argue that the focus should not be on defining parametric constraints and quantities, but on aligning the perceptual properties of the simulations with the strategies of the stakeholders (planner/ urban designer/ architect/ developer/ community). Using projects from the Computational Design and Research group at Aedas [CDR] as examples, this chapter will discuss how an open framework of lightweight applications with simple functionality can be integrated into the design and planning process by using computational simulations as urban design heuristics.

summary In this paper we present an outline of a newly started project to develop a tool which connects BIM to a manufacturing technique like 3D printing. First we will look some promising manufacturing techniques. We will design a small dwelling and export it into a BIM, from which we will extract our data to generate the path the nozzle has to follow. The chosen path is constrained by the material properties, the design and speed of the nozzle. To validate the system we develop a small VR tool in which we mimic a manufacturing tool.

summary Creativity with its various processes is involved in all design actions. Creativity used in architectural design is different than creativity in other domains. However, creativity in general with its related cognition processes has no general theory. This research proposes certain activities of initial architectural design phases in which the role of activity is important. The research proceeds to present a case study of two architectural design studios in which a VR environment is employed in order to investigate the effect of VR use on the creativity in those initial design phases. The research applies a methodology of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Various architectural design factors are neutralized to overcome the influence generated from human factors variation and design thinking prejudice on architectural designing and the associated creativities.

summary The use of generative systems has been widely investigated in the architectural design process through different procedures and levels of autonomy to generate form.The digression from abstract pre- existing notions of vocabulary and rules – even when resulting in emergent forms – to address complex real- world contexts is yet a challenging undertaking.This paper explores incorporating context in the process of designing using generative systems from ideation to fabrication, and explores the relationship between the emergent nature of generative design and the situated act of designing while using generative design tools.A course offered for 3rd year architecture students at the Department of Architecture, Ain Shams University, Egypt, was designed for this purpose. 110 students employed systems including shape grammars, L- systems, fractals and cellular automata, to design and fabricate 8 group projects.A discussion around emergence and situatedness is presented, with special attention to the designing process from ideation to fabrication.
