Bio-data related to emotions, heart and respiratory rate, are mediated by dancers and gives them control over music and video- mapping on stage. A creative process occurs through successive approaches, where technical possibilities are systematically explored until controlled, then body expression is lead by Alba Emoting, building an artistic discourse. Video-mapping is used for lighting purposes, creating a visual atmosphere for dancers. Fusion of media on stage creates synesthetic scenery where physical and digital aspects combine and interact in a codependent relationship.

summary The problem at hand is to ensure that the perception by means of Augmented Reality (AR) is hence reliable and opinions resulting from a Participatory Design (PD) mediated by this technology could be incorporated into the design solution. This paper presents the evaluation of multiple 3D models recognition in AR, with or without an auxiliary projection. Leisure area designs involve urban equipment of various dimensions that are visualized simultaneously. Therefore, it was necessary to verify if the participants were capable of recognizing them and which would be the best way to visualize: exclusively with the iPad screen or with the iPad associated with an external projection – to verify whether the visualization using an external projection would amplify the visualization area. The results obtained in the evaluation were used to improve the AR application and also, to develop guidelines for the AR use in a PD.

summary Many situations related to natural environment and human activities increase the risk related to housing and create a demand for rapid post-disaster solutions. The solutions implemented by both the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the local and national organizations should fulfill the requirements of the temporarily displaced populations. However post-disaster design faces many challenges in its process making the response always more complex. At the same time, computer-based design is a growing approach in both architectural practice and research. The research described in this paper aims to help in finding solutions to design issues by addressing the potential of computer-based architectural design support. It is applied to shelter and camp development and takes into account physical, contextual and climatic parameters. The outcome is a design process for shelter and camp, which has been validated by a parametric prototype experiment in a case study. This should support humanitarian teams and contribute to enhancing the quality of design as well as to reducing the time required for the design and construction processes.

summary This paper presents an Augmented Reality application intended to establish a link to site history, approaching cultural heritage issues simulating the metaphor of time tunnel. It presents an initiative to bring technology to the end user, in order to rescue the past through AR of a plaza with cultural importance that suffered intervention with time. The work was developed as an exercise of a Virtual Reality class in a Graduate Program. The class exercise involved understanding uses of AR, development of AR applications and user perception of the built environment through the augmented lenses provided by AR applications. The method proposed for the exercise was the field study developed in seven steps: AR scope definition, preliminary exploration, AR application formulation, data collection and user perception evaluation. Four AR applications were developed and evaluated: 360 panorama and an overlap image, 3D object, and video with historic information. On site, users demonstrated surprise with the experiment and no difficulty of use, however transposition to the significant record of a past time varied with AR application and simplification of implementation.

summary In this paper we examine the adaptations cellular automata (CA) are typically subjected to when they are applied to architectural designing. We argue that, despite a number of earlier studies that portrayed CA as generic generative design tools, the transition from generic CA to specific design tools is not yet well understood. To describe this transition, we first examine this aspect in a number of previous studies relating CA to architectural design. In a following detailed analysis of an applied design case study, we trace similarities between findings made in the literature review to findings made in the case study and extend them with additional observations. We conclude with a summary of challenges and opportunities met by architectural designers employing and developing CA for design purposes.

summary We analyse the problem of creating didactic material for teaching and evaluating mathematics in the first year of a School of Architecture. By using visual programming, science professor used codes (formulae) to represent in a software their proposals, instead of drawing them themselves. Through this experience we create a database of codes with computational solutions that allows faculty to modify, reuse, visualise and print in the same platform that she students will use while developing their designs. In this way we aim to maximise the link between mathematics and design as fundamental base for the control of complex shapes.

The purpose is to study the architectural design process from parametric modeling (through CNC machining) and assembly operations to production by way of a full-scale experimental pavilion. summary Virtual reality opens a new world of a great potential for both research and experimentation by allowing new forms of unbuilt sensible architectural space. The paper starts with a sketch of the current context in Virtual Reality and continues by outlining the development and structure of the research “project Anywhere”. The project is an easily deployable, wireless, multi-user, augmented reality app-system that offers full body immersion through body, head and hands tracking. It can host multiple concurrent users, able to move freely in the virtual space, by moving in the real, and also perform actions through a gesture interface to affect their shared environment. Concluding, we describe the inherent properties of such a space, which we propose as a novel spatial medium for architecture, through an example of a potential application.

summary The article proposes to explore the concepts of storytelling (Lupton, 2020 and Xavier, 2015) and ubiquity (Santaella, 2013 and Santos, 2021) applied to the design of natural and invisible interfaces (Benyon, 2011). With Natural Interface it is possible to interact with devices directly, without needing the help of a mouse or keyboard. To do so, it presents as a case study the project “Criatura de Luz” (2015), by Estúdio Guto Requena, carried out to compose the new facade of the WZ Hotel (Sao Paulo). The purpose of this research is to understand the role of the designer in the creation of interfaces that are not only interactive, but that begin to propose immersive and ubiquitous narratives in design projects and the method for this analysis will be the case study from the design perspective as storytelling proposed by Lupton (2020). The aim is to do exploratory research to provide greater familiarity with the problem.

summary We present a tool which empowers 'green' design freedom for architects by presenting ever expanding choices in components and materials and automatizing their configuration and placement. Several time- and resource- consuming initial design iterations are eliminated by optimizing the energetic efficiency of the building in the original draft phase. The smart, efficient, energy producing building of the future can thereby offer increased cost and energy efficiency, security and comfort, without any compromise in style and form - on the contrary, the proposed tool stands to open up a novel palette of creative 'green' architectural design elements, which would effectively be co-designed by architects. The proposed algorithmic CAD design tool allows direct integration of renewable sources in the architectural design phase, taking into account local meteorological and solar radiation conditions. Furthermore locally optimized evolution and modification of renewable components integrated into the building's structure is possible, leveraging an increasingly wide range of possibilities in form, finish and renewable energy generation.

summary The present paper is a mapping study of digital fabrication laboratories in Latin America. It presents and discusses results from a survey with 31 universities’ fab labs, studios and independent initiatives in Latin America. The objective of this study is fourfold: firstly, to draw the cultural, social and economic context of implementation of digital fabrication laboratories in the region; secondly, to synthesize relevant data from correlations between organizational structures, facilities and technologies, activities, types of prototypes, uses and areas of application; thirdly, to draw a network of people and institutions, recovering connections and the genealogy of these fab labs; and fourthly, to present some fab labs that are intertwined with local questions. The results obtained indicate a complex “homo faber” network of initiatives that embraces academic investigations, architectural developments, industry applications, artistic propositions and actions in social processes.

summary The article presents a mapping of digital fabrication laboratories in South America from the architecture and urbanism field. First, it draws a brief context of implementation of facilities and growing of expertise highlighting economic, academic and cultural aspects. Second, it presents some data mapped from 31 laboratories of the region, as infrastructure, and correlations between uses and applications. Third, it organizes the mapped laboratories in two significant approaches for the region’s context: works focused on technological development and actions directed to the social and environmental development. Fourth, it infers some possible steps of the field in the region in the near future.

summary In the past three years, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have become an important new way for universities to reach out to possible matriculates, life long learners and alumni. Although MOOCs already cover a vast amount of subjects and curricula, it is remarkable to ascertain the lack of Architectural Design courses on the main platforms like edX and Coursera. Online courses do cover design aspects, e.g. about styles and building materials, but 'design as activity' is an exceptional subject in the portfolio of available MOOCs. In contrast, the CAAD community was one of the first to develop Virtual Design Studio's (VDS) and experimental predecessors of MOOC platforms, such as the AVOCAAD course database system (Af Klercker et al. 2001). Yet, the query 'MOOC' still does not ring a bell in the CUMINCAD publication database (per May 2015). In this paper I will explore a palette of design education settings, in order to find a fit to what a MOOC platform can offer. I will compare the 'MOOC-ability' of Design Education to chances in Virtual Design Studio's and developments in ubiquitous mobile platforms.

summary This paper categorizes the implementation of specifically CAD/CAM into architectural design education following two main pedagogical models: Discrete and Integrated. In order to evaluate the integrated pedagogical model, the authors conducted a one- day-workshop for basic design students (34 first-year, two second-year) in April 2015, at the Faculty of Fine Arts & Design at Izmir University of Economics in Turkey. summary C-LITH is the reconsideration of the architectural building unit through the exploration of new composite techniques and materials. Our project develops individual compo- nents that exploit the strength, lightness, and variability possible with carbon ber laments when paired with computation, digital fabrication, and hand assembly. Traditionally, architectural units made of brick or concrete are small and multiple, heavy, dif cult to vary, and are much better in compression than tension. Using carbon ber laments to create variable units allows for larger individual units that can vary in both shape and structural performance as needed. Our units, developed through winding pre-preg carbon ber tow around disposable molds, bene t structurally from the quasi-isotropic properties that are developed through the winding patterns. The specific structural capacities of the units remain to be understood through further testing and analysis, which falls outside the scope of this current research. At this junction, structural capacities have been determined empirically, i.e. will it stand? Most importantly, as a formal study, our units address the use of carbon ber at the scale of architectural production. A majority of the effort involved in materializing C-LITH was the development of a two-fold prototypical manufacturing process that produces the components and assembly. For this we invented a method to quickly and cheaply construct variable cardboard molds that could withstand the wound casting and baking steps, but could also be easily weakened through water immersion to be removed. For the assembly we developed a rigid dummy-jig system to hold the joint plates in position with a high level of precision but could also incrementally absorb the adjustment errors unavoidable in hand assembly systems. Using a simple pin connection the resultant structures can be easily disassembled for transportation and reassembly elsewhere.

summary The idea of an emergent or generative form based on repeating rules of development borrowed from the field of developmental biology has provided fertile ground for inspiration for architectural theory and computational design. With simple constraints developed iteratively, complex geometry and form generation can be distilled down to a list of developmental rules or functions in order to deterministically generate form. The ideas and illustrations of naturalists on organic form and developmental biology leading back to the turn of the 20th c., such as the work of D'arcy Wentworth Thompson and Ernst Haeckel, have inspired architects from Louis Sullivan all the way to contemporary generative design. This study revisits this design tradition of biomimetic geometries based on deterministic rules for the iterative development of forms based on biological analogs and models for growth. A series of semi-regular compound patterns were developed using parametric modeling and iterative rules. These geometries were then applied to surface topologies as a decorative tactile embellishment resulting in complex thermodynamic conditions. A series of physical prototypes where then developed with different high-relief patterns and pattern densities. Positive prototype geometries were then produced using stereolithography for casting plaster molds for the production molding of finished ceramic pieces for thermal analysis using digital thermography. By studying the performance of these complex geometries as physical prototypes under controlled experimentation, high-relief surfaces and the resulting thermodynamic conditions can be understood not just qualitative experience, but also quantitatively through measured performance metrics and innovative tools for analytical analysis.

summary This paper introduces an ongoing study that aims to combine location-based social network analyses and topological space syntax analyses for reading the city and developing urban strategies, compatibly with city center expansion trends. This study focuses on: a) Analyzing/visualization of the big data that emerged from location-based social networks that exposes activity trends of the study area. b) Revealing relationships between activity distribution and potential movement axes -that achieved through space syntax analysis- c) Evaluating potential movement axes and activity trend relations for reasoning urban decision making.

summary Responsive architecture is one of the growing areas of computational design that is not getting adequate attention in CAAD curricula. A pedagogical approach to designing responsive systems requires more than the typical knowledge, tools or skill sets in architectural design studios. This paper presents a framework for integrating responsive and kinetic systems in the architectural design studio. The framework builds on findings of two design studios conducted at The American University in Cairo, Egypt. In both studios, students were asked to design elements of responsive architecture that work towards the development of their projects. The paper demonstrates the process and outcomes of both studios. It then demonstrates how concepts of integrated project delivery are incorporated to propose a framework that engages students in designing, fabricating and operating responsive systems in different phases of the design process. A discussion follows regarding dynamics of design studio in light of the proposed framework.
