title Implications of Including Fully Participating Furniture and Fittings in Numerical Simulation Models

summary Many simulation teams create models of empty buildings, e.g. without furnishings and fittings. Such virtual worlds lack many of the thermal and visual artefacts by which we make thermal and visual judgements and some numerical tools only abstractly treat the physics of furnishing and fittings. This paper explores what happens if sunlight actually falls on desks and chairs and filing cabinets rather than the floor as well as what happens if interior artefacts were treated with the same rigour as facades by the simulation engine and are available for use in visual assessments. Typically increasing model resolution is a tedious process and added detail if included, may not be fully utilised. To explore removing such barriers, a data store of pre-defined entities, which include provenance, visual form, explicit thermophysical composition, light distributions and mass flow attributes has been introduced in ESP-r. ESP-r facilities for calculating view-factors and insolation distributions have been updated to include this extended data model. Issues related to creating and managing such entities is discussed and the impacts of their use is quantified.

summary Evolutionary methods with artificial selection have been shown to be an effective human-computer technique for exploring design spaces with unknown goals. This paper investigates an interactive evolution of visual programs currently used in popular parametric modelling software. Although parametric models provide a useful cognitive artifact for designers to interact with, they are often bound by their topological structure with the designer left to adjusting (or optimising) metric variables as part of a design search. By allowing the topological structure of the graph to be evolved as well as the parameters, artificial selection can be employed to explore a wider design space more suited to the early design stage.

summary New advances in 3D modelling and visualization tools for large-scale landscape and construction projects have been achieved recently. The introduction of the new 3D digital modelling and visualization tools, e.g. CAD, VR, GIS and BIM initiated a huge shift in the way planners and designers develop, communicate and present project scenarios. This paper outlines the challenges, new trends and workflows connected to the use of new tools and how it’s been practiced and experienced by professionals and stakeholders as observed in Norway. The observation shows that the latest developments are providing new potentials for performing better communication and collaboration. Planners could now demonstrate many aspects of a project which exceed the usual minimum requirements. An important functionality is the capability to work with huge amount of data-sets for large-scale projects which were previously almost impossible to work with.

title Visualisation of multiscale datasets in numerical models of complex systems

summary Recently advanced visualisation techniques receive increasing attention among scientists and engineers. These techniques should not only allow a direct analysis of multidimensional structures to provide intiutive and quick comparison of experimental data with model results, but also yield quantitative measures to support or negate the model itself. A key phenomenology of complex systems is that they are multiscale, i.e. the structures of interest in the data are on the wide range of spatiotemporal scale. Here we examine a simple, yet generic, example, a sandpile (avalance model), the threshold coupled map lattice (CML). The emergent phenomenology is broadband, but is represented on a (finite) grid. To study the 3-dimensional evolution of the threshold CML model of a sandpile as a function of control parameters, a semi-immersive virtual reality (VR) environment has been used. Sandpile profiles are calculated in real time and are superimposed over the colour grid respresenting one of the control parameters. This represents a generic problem of visualising multiscale structures in datasets derived from non-linear systems. The software models were developed in OpenGL and Glut library and will ultimately be implemented in semi-immersive VR on ImmersaDesk. To achieve sufficient speed in real-time display and to ultimately facilitate computational steering, the full data set must be represented geographically in a compact form without loss of information.

summary The paper explains a didactical method for training students that has been run three times to date. The premise of the course is to combine students from different faculties into interdisciplinary teams. These teams then have a complex problem to resolve within an extremely short time span. In light of recent works from Joy and Kurzweil, the theme Robotics was chosen as an exercise that is timely, interesting and related, but not central to the studies of the various faculties. In groups of 3 to 5, students from faculties of architecture, computer science and mechanical engineering are entrusted to design, build and program a robot which must successfully execute a prescribed set of actions in a competitive atmosphere. The entire course lasts ten days and culminates with the competitive evaluation. The robots must navigate a labyrinth, communicate with on another and be able to cover longer distances with some speed. In order to simplify the resources available to the students, the Lego Mindstorms Robotic syshed backgrounds instaed of synthetic ones. The combination of digitally produced (scanned) sperical images together with the use of HDR open a wide range of new implementation in the field of architecture, especially in combining synthetic elements in existing buildings, e.g. new interior elements in an existing historical museum).ural presentations in the medium of computer animation. These new forms of expression of design thoughts and ideas go beyond mere model making, and move more towards scenemaking and storytelling. The latter represents new methods of expression within computational environments for architects and designers.its boundaries. The project was conducted using the pedagogical framework of the netzentwurf.de; a relatively well established Internet based communication platform. This means that the studio was organised in the „traditional“ structure consisting of an initial 3 day workshop, a face to face midterm review, and a collective final review, held 3,5 months later in the Museum of Communication in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. In teams of 3 (with each student from a different university and a tutor located at a fourth) the students worked over the Internet to produce collaborative design solutions. The groups ended up with designs that spanned a range of solutions between real and virtual architecture. Examples of the student’s work (which is all available online) as well as their working methods are described. It must be said that the energy invested in the studio by the organisers of the virtual campus (as well as the students who took part) was considerably higher than in normal design studios and the paper seeks to look critically at the effort in relation to the outcomes achieved. The range and depth of the student’s work was surprising to many in the project, especially considering the initial hurdles (both social and technological) that had to overcome. The self-referential nature of the theme, the method and the working environment encouraged the students to take a more philosg and programming a winning robot. These differences became apparent early in the sessions and each group had to find ways to communicate their ideas and to collectively develop them by building on the strengths of each team member.

summary Describing design as a sequence of steps cannot convey the complexity of social interactions that it embodies. Design is not merely a process, but a co-evolution of efforts and events in various places and times—both synchronous and asynchronous. Designers share their values, effort and expertise within design settings via artifacts that further the design process. Increasingly, these design settings in academia, research, and professional practice combine physical and virtual modalities such as immersion, projection, and a range of interaction technologies. Peter Anders has described such spaces as cybrids: hybrids that integrate virtual and physical space. In these settings, designers use overlapping physical and virtual artifacts and tools to arrive at a co-operative design resolution. Within collaborative design, these artifacts take on an additional role. As embodiments of design ideas and actions, they become media for communication. Donald Schon asserts that design should be considered a form of making, rather than primarily a form of problem solving, information processing or research. Indeed the line separating creation from design is becoming increasingly blurred. For the design artifact itself may become a part of the design proposal—its virtual presence incorporated within a cybrid structure or object. We may in the future see a proliferation of cybrid settings that support collaborative, digital design. The technologies for this already exist in collaborative tools, networked computing, scanning and immersive media. However, it will take a creative vision to see how these disparate tools and devices can integrate within the ideal design setting.

summary In a climate where standard methods of construction are being challenged, developments in engineered timbers are allowing mass timber construction to be explored as a sustainable alternative to current building methods that can change the future of the built environment. Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is at the forefront of this evolution and, with the advancement in computational design and digital fabrication tools, there lies an opportunity to redefine standard construction. This project creates connections inspired by traditional Japanese joinery that have been adapted to be used for the panel construction of CLT structures. Using a combination of digital modelling and advanced digital fabrication, the project utilizes CLT offcuts as a primary connection material. The system not only reduces waste but also mitigates thermal bridging and lowers the number of connection points whilst increasing the ease of building and fabrication. Connection systems are designed and prototyped using a robotic arm and are then evaluated within the context of a building scale and considers largeâ€scale fabrication and onâ€site assembly whilst continuing to focus on the reduction of waste.

title The Age of Spiritual Machines: When Computers Exceed Human Intelligence

summary How much do we humans enjoy our current status as the most intelligent beings on earth? Enough to try to stop our own inventions from surpassing us in smarts? If so, we'd better pull the plug right now, because if Ray Kurzweil is right, we've only got until about 2020 before computers outpace the human brain in computational power. Kurzweil, artificial intelligence expert and author of The Age of Intelligent Machines, shows that technological evolution moves at an exponential pace. Further, he asserts, in a sort of swirling postulate, time speeds up as order increases, and vice versa. He calls this the "Law of Time and Chaos," and it means that although entropy is slowing the stream of time down for the universe overall, and thus vastly increasing the amount of time between major events, in the eddy of technological evolution the exact opposite is happening, and events will soon be coming faster and more furiously. This means that we'd better figure out how to deal with conscious machines as soon as possible--they'll soon not only be able to beat us at chess, they'll likely demand civil rights, and they may at last realize the very human dream of immortality. The Age of Spiritual Machines is compelling and accessible, and not necessarily best read from front to back--it's less heavily historical if you jump around (Kurzweil encourages this). Much of the content of the book lays the groundwork to justify Kurzweil's timeline, providing an engaging primer on the philosophical and technological ideas behind the study of consciousness. Instead of being a gee-whiz futurist manifesto, Spiritual Machines reads like a history of the future, without too much science fiction dystopianism. Instead, Kurzweil shows us the logical outgrowths of current trends, with all their attendant possibilities. This is the book we'll turn to when our computers

summary In this paper we investigate the possibilities of new typologies of urban public space for high density environments. The premise for the project would be that with new high-density typologies, it would be necessary to consider a difference in the nature of urban public spaces rather than a difference in degree from the status quo. From observations of urban patterns that drive collective, hybrid spaces around Asia, relationships between urban attributes are drawn. For this paper we shall focus on the particular case of Linked Hybrid, Beijing, China, as an elevated urban public space. A literature review focuses on reviewing key theories to construct and adopt a rating system to develop an empirical framework to evaluate the case studies and extract the key attributes. These rated attributes are then abstracted in a real-time model that enables user manipulation. The purpose is to create a tool to better observe the effects and evolution of planning decisions for future urban spaces in high density contexts. The preliminary results are consistent with the idea that selected spatial parameters of a space may be embedded into a “barcode” and referenced as a type. The combination of different types, hence their parameters may be used for effective replication of their characteristics to improve the decision-making process for urban designers. The research is not intended to reproduce the successful urban public spaces but rather result in a catalogue of typologies which can be referred to during the initial stages of planning to provide an indication of spatial qualities.

This technology is designed to aid the typical scientist or engineer in learning and using computer graphics productively, including writing his own programs and interfacing to software specialists who will write and maintain his programs. Key aspects of the current development include the creation and incorporation of a visually-oriented learning package for graphics geometric perception and graphics programming, as well as a sophisticated control environment which aides the user in obtaining a quick understanding of and access to the system. summary UrbanLab is a computer system supporting urban and regional design. The papers outlines two leading aspects of this large research project, aimed respectively to make explicit the dynamic of the design in its time and geographic dimensions, and to interactively represent the interplay of some, explicitly, recognised factors, for instance the role of a multitude of different (local) actors in the design process. UrbanLab has been applied to several projects at different scales. We consider the applications to dynamically and interactively generating models of an Alpine valley. The modelling in the spatial and temporal dimensions provided us with the elements to study the evolution over the next twenty years.

summary Composition and performance of Computer Music still keep some of the features of traditional music, together with new ones. Rhythm, melody, harmony can still be present in new paradigms (even if they are not necessarily required when dealing with computer music), but new compositional parameters are coming to light, causing the term «music» not always to be appropriate to describe new phenomena of sonic art. This paper will show some new paradigms of this kind of sonic art, as well as different view of old ones. Any past dogmas should be wiped out when dealing with digital arts. The rebellion against tonality of the first half of 20th century is surpassed now, and I believe that new music could use harmonic intervals without generating conflicts with the ideological problems which arose at that time (even if there are still many people who don’t admit it). Actually, digital domain opens a huge amount of unexplored worlds, making any past ideological dogma a prison we should free ourselves from. Nowadays, making music has many things in common with visual arts and scientific research. Many musical parameters can be applied to video arts, architecture, and vice-versa. Structure of sound has a lot of similarities with many other physical phenomena such as inner atomic structure, particle physics, astronomy, biology etc. This paper will deal with new uses and interpretations of old musical parameters (rhythm, harmony, melody) together with a presentation of some of the new ones. Debated topics are: ? Harmonic/inharmonic sounds, rhythm and melodies. The Deep Harmony (the harmony of spheres or cosmic harmony CYCLES). ? The inner structure and evolution of a single sound ? Interpretative music: Music generated by exploration of soundscapes or sonic architectures, generative processes constrained by interpreter’s gestures, state transitions between musical structures. ? Generative music: stocastic generation, algorithmic composition, levels of action. ? Music or non-music this is the problem (a terminology problem) ? Hyper-spatial music, virtual times, hyper-times. Time travels by means of sonic matter. ? Visual music. Generating 3D video by means of musical processes.

In recent years, initiatives have been promoted to boost the development of air transport, among which the BIM BR strategy stands out, instituted by decree n-9.983 (2019), decree n-10.306 (2020) and more recently, the publication of the airport design manual (SAC, 2021). In this context, this work presents partial results of a doctoral research based on the Design Science Research (DSR) method for the application of Machine Learning (ML) techniques in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) subarea, aiming to support SAC airport project analysts in the phase of project evaluation. Based on a set of training and test data corresponding to airport projects, two ML algorithms were trained. Preliminary results indicate that the use of ML algorithms enables a new scenario to be explored by teams of airport design analysts in Brazil.

summary The spaces we live in are increasingly entwined in a complex weave of architecture and technology. With the evolution of intelligent devices that work in the background, design of place will eventually be a seamless integration of not just efficient but also experiential and virtual technologies. This signals a paradigm shift because “smart” architecture affords users a new interaction with architecture. In spite of such promises, we have seen interactive architecture ideas and “smart” environments only within laboratory walls or in the form of simplistic implementations. Perhaps the reason is simple. Rachael McCann asks if the integration of technology within the context of an increasingly information-driven modern era has abandoned the body in favor of the mind (McCann 2006). If we acknowledge that “smart” computing has the opportunity to transcend an efficient backbone to generator of experiences, perhaps we, as designers, must reconsider our position and strategy in this modern world. This paper is designed as a critical essay—one which evaluates interactive architecture and “smart” environments within the context of today’s socio-cultural climate. The paper hopes to open a discussion about the role of computing as architecture and the role of the architect in the design of such architecture.
