summary This paper is based on the development of a Hypermedia Information Delivery System called ArchiSpace, by the Department of Architecture, The University of Hong Kong to produce a comprehensive knowledge of a Curtain Wall system. A set of construction drawings of the building were analysed and converted to the 3D hypermedia system format. The focus of this study is the use of the hyper-model environment in information organization and once the 3D hypermedia system is formed the information on the curtain wall system is accessed by the use of hyper-text environments hyper-image environments, and hyper-model environments. The paper analysed that the hyper-model access method seems to be more appropriate than the hyper-text and hyper-image access methods for users who do not have any knowledge pre-requisites. The results obtained by this research are being applied to improve the user friendliness for information access within a hyper-model environment.

summary Size, shape and disposition of windows in walls has long been an integral expression of style in architecture. As buildings have grown taller the relationships of the windows to the ground plane and to the surrounding environments have become more complex and difficult to predict. Traditionally architects have had to use their own knowledge, experience and feelings in the design of windows. There may be few, if any, scientific bases for their decisions. The difficulty in making good design decisions is compounded because many criteria for window design, such as daylight, sunlight, ventilation, sound, view and privacy have to be considered simultaneously. It is here that computers can help, on the one hand, by providing ‘expert knowledge’ so that architects can consult the cumulative knowledge database before making a decision, whilst on the other hand, evaluations of the decisions taken can be compared with a given standard or with alternative solutions.

‘Expert knowledge’ provision has been made possible by the introduction of hypertext, the advancement of the world wide web and the development of large scale data-storage media. Much of the computer’s value to the architects lies in its ability to assist in the evaluation of a range of performance criteria. Without the help of a computer, architects are faced with impossibly complex arrays of solutions. This paper illustrates an evaluation tool for two factors which are important to the window design. The two factors to be investigated in this paper are sunlighting and views out of windows.

Sunlight is a quantitative factor that can theoretically be assessed by some mathematical formulae provided there is sufficient information for calculation but when total cumulative effects of insolation through the different seasons is required, in addition to yearly figures, a design in real-time evolution requires substantial computing power. Views out of windows are qualitative and subjective. They present difficulties in measurement by the use of conventional mathematical tools. These two fields of impact in window design are explored to demonstrate how computers can be used in assessing various options to produce optimal design solutions. This paper explains the methodologies, theories and principles underlying these evaluation tools. It also illustrates how an evaluation tool can be used as a design tool during the design process.

summary In this paper we show how very high-volumes of raw WiFi-based location data of individuals can be used to identify dense activity locations within a neighbourhood. Key to our methods is the inference of the size of the area directly from the data, without having to use additional geographical information. To extract the density information, data-mining and machine learning techniques form activity-based transportation modelling are applied. These techniques are demonstrated on data from a large-scale experiment conducted in Singapore in which tens of thousands of school children carried a multi-sensor device for five consecutive days. By applying the techniques we were able to identify expected high-density areas of school pupils, specifically their school locations, using only the raw data, demonstrating the general applicability of the methods.

summary Modest in budget and ephemeral in nature, STOCK SPACE was installed, exhibited, and dismantled over a five-day period at the Toronto National Trade Center as part of an invited exhibition of concept spaces at the 2005 Toronto Interior Design Show. Occupying 450 square feet within an 110,000-square-foot convention center, STOCK SPACE was small, vertical, warm, and quiet, in contrast to the immense horizontality of the mechanically cooled trade floor of nearly 40,000 exhibitors and attendees. STOCK SPACE was an investigation of limits. Material had to fit through doors and on our CNC milling bed. It had to clear staircases, be carried by hand, and be stored compactly within the confines of our fabrication area. STOCK SPACE was an exercise in subtraction. The space was created through the removal of stock material from a conceptually full volume that measured 24’ long x 18’ wide x 12’ tall. High density EPS foam in 4’x 8’ x 16” modules provided a light and machinable medium capable of recording the vestigial marks of fabrication as well as providing adequate dampening and insulation. The resulting assemblage of stacked modules embodied traits of the orthographic grid associated with the length and width of the stock, the topographic contours associated with the depth of the stock and the isoparametric grooves of the resulting surface. The collective composition of these elements was the analytical result of maximum machining curvature.

summary This paper takes a first step in characterizing a novel field of architectural research - aerial robotic construction (ARC) - where aerial robotics is used not only for construction, but as a guiding principle in the design and fabrication process. Featuring autonomous flying vehicles that lift small building elements and position them according to a precise digital blueprint, ARC offers a comprehensive new approach to architecture research and technology. Developed by the research groups of Gramazio & Kohler and Raffaello D'Andrea at ETH Zurich, ARC offers unique advantages over traditional approaches to building: it does not require scaffolding, it is easily scalable, and it offers digital integration and informational oversight across the entire design and building process. This paper considers 1) research parameters for the individual components of ARC (such as module design, connection methodologies, vehicle cooperation, and construction sequencing/synchronization), and 2) the architectural implications of integrating these discrete components into a systemic, unifying process at the earliest stages of design. Fidelity between the design concept and the full-scale construction is of particular concern.

Man throughout the time stored information in his “inside” which can give us probably an answer to how the representation of our environment came out, and how it guides our lives, our behaviour and health. Many sciences have tried and are still trying to explore the “inside” of man to provide him with health, better satisfaction for his needs and desires. But although all sciences have the well being of human beings as a common aim they have also isolated themselves from each other. Due to this, it can be said that there is a lack of exchange of knowledge and it only shows that an interdisciplinary movement is necessary. In this paper, a research that was conducted at Bilkent University in the year 2000 will be utilised to clarify these statements about the perception and representation of space by the help of colours and forms.

summary The demands for rapid response to complex problems, flexibility, and other characteristics of today's workplace, such as a highly trained work force, have led many organizations to move from strict hierarchical structures to a more flexible project team organization. The organizational structure is broader and flatter, with greater independence given to organizational units, in this case the project teams. To understand the relationship between project team communication patterns and the design and layout of team space, a study was conducted of an architectural office before and after a move to new space. The study involved three project teams. Information was collected on individual communication patterns; perceptions of the ease of communication; and the effectiveness of the design and layout of physical space to support these communications. In order to provide guidance for critical decision-making in design, these communication data were correlated with a series of measures for the specification of team space enclosure and layout. These group/team space measures were adaptations of existing measures of individual work space, and included an enclosure measure, based on an enclosure measure developed by Stokols (1990); a measure of visual field, based on the "isovist" fields of Benedikt (1979); and an "integration" measure, based on the work of Hillier and Hanson (1984). Results indicate both linear and non-linear relationships between interaction patterns and physical space measures. This work is the initial stage of a research program to define a set of specific physical measures to guide the design of supportive work space for project teams and work groups within various types of organizations.

summary This research focused on building a software system on VR-CAVE for multiple users’ interaction with various media, alongside simultaneous communication amongst users. While all users interact with virtual objects in VR-CAVE concurrently, by means of several kinds of input device, including conventional mouse and keyboard, PDAs, mobile phones and laptops, users can communicate with each other through the most natural way at the same time. The system prototype was implemented and still in development for extension on the strength of supporting more input device and media formats. Further research would make VR-CAVE not only a representing tool, but a platform for design communication and evaluation, or a collaborative design environment.

summary The dualities of ‘Humanity and Nature’, ‘Organic and Inorganic’, Artificial and Synthetic’ are themes that have permeated architectural discourse since the beginning of the 20th c. The interplay between nature and machine can be directly related to the 19th c. discussion of nature and industrialism that was exemplified in the works of Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright that spawned the organic architect movement. Echoes of these dichotomous themes have been resuscitated with the introduction of computational and information processing as a fundamental part of contemporary theory and critical praxis. The ability to go beyond simplistic dualities is promised by the introduction of data informed multi-variable processes that allow for complex parametric processes that introduce a range of criteria within evaluative design frameworks. The investigations detailed herein focuses on surface morphology development that are explored and evaluated for their capacity to reintegrate the ideas from genetic and developmental biology into an architectural discourse that has historically been dominated by the mechanistic metaphor perpetuated throughout the modern era. Biological analogues in nature suggest that the zone of decoration plays an important role in the environmental response and climate adaptability of architecture. The building envelope represents the greatest potential energetic gain or loss, as much as 50 %, therefore the architectural envelope plays the most significant role in energy performance of the building. Indeed, from an environmental performance standpoint, the formal response of the envelope should tend toward complexity, as biology suggests, rather than the reduced modernist aesthetic. Information architecture coupled with environment and contextual data has the potential to return the focus of design to the rhizome, as the functional expressions of climatic performance and thermal comfort interplay within other cultural, social and economic frameworks informing the architectural artifact. Increasing the resolution that ornament requires in terms of geometric surface articulation has a reciprocal affect on the topological relationship between surface and space: the architectural envelope can respond through geometry on the surface scale in order to more responsively interface with the natural environment. This paper responds to increasing computational opportunities in architectural design and manufacturing; first by exploring the historical trajectory of discourse on nature vs. machine in architecture, then exploring the implications for utilizing environmental data to increase the energy performance of architecture at the building periphery, where building meets environment creating the synthetic Built Ecology.

summary As computer technology matures, our growing ability to create large systems is leading to basic changes in the nature of programming. Current programming language concepts will not be adequate for building and maintaining systems of the complexity called for by the tasks we attempt. Just as high level languages enabled the programmer to escape from the intricacies of a machine's order code, higher level programming systems can provide the means to understand and manipulate complex systems and components.
