summary This paper commences by outlining notions of creativity before examining the role of emergence in creative design. Various process models of emergence are presented; these are based on notions of additive and substitutive variables resulting in additive and substitutive schemas. Frameworks for both representation and process for a computational model of creative design are presented. The representational framework is based on design prototypes whilst the process framework is based on an evolutionary model. The computational model brings both representation and process together.

summary This paper introduces conceptual designing within an F-B-S framework. It then goes on to describe a number of models of designing before introducing the notions of situatedness and situated acts. The remainder of the paper describes the role of situatedness and situated acts in conceptual designing. It attempts to show that a number of otherwise difficult design phenomena are modelable using situatedness and situated acts. A demonstration example concludes the paper along with some of the research issues this view of designing brings with it.

summary This paper describes some recent cognitively-based and computationally-based research on representing and reasoning about shapes. The cognitive studies are based on protocol analyses of designers and indicatethat visual reasoning in design involves drawings of shapes and their relationsin the generation of unexpected results. The computational studies are concerned with the development of qualitative representations of shapesthat can be used to reason about shapes. Two representations are described: half-planes and landmark-based qualitative codes. Reasoning using these representations is presented.

Topological constraints on objects are used to represent various types of groups where the groups produce repeating patterns. A process model of visual rhythm discovery is developed. summary The aim of the Expert Systems in Computer-Aided Design conference was to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences related to expert systems in computer-aided design, to present and explore the state-of-the-art of expert systems in computer-aided design, to delineate future directions in both research and practice and to promote further development. Seventeen of the nineteen papers accepted were presented with each presentation followed by a round table discussion. The discussion was taped, transcribed and edited and forms part of this volume. The authors came from seven countries, whilst the attendees represented some thirteen nationalities. There is an implicit structure in the ordering of the papers, commencing with system architectures, representation tools through applications to specific design concerns. These papers demonstrate the wide variety of knowledge engineering tools needed in computer-aided design. It is interesting to observe the progression over these three conferences in the ratio of computer scientists to design researchers amongst the authors. The balance over the period has swung from a predominance of computer scientists to a predominance of design researchers. We are beginning to see knowledge engineering development driven by designers' needs

The adequacy of any representation is critical for information processing in computer-aided design. Shape representation using shape elements and spatial relationships are elaborated and the construction of shape schemas and characteristics of shape schema are investigated. A representation for patterns in architectural shapes is demonstrated.

Feature- based approaches founded on qualitative representations have been used. This paper extends the qualitative representation developed for two-dimensional shapes to three-dimensional objects. It uses the qualitative representation to detect features. An example of the application of this representation is presented.

summary This paper presents an evolutionary approach to style emergence in architectural designs. Emergence is the process of making features explicit which were previously only implicit. Style is considered as a set of common characteristics of a group of designs. It is interpreted using a language model as an analogy and is represented at the genetic level. An evolutionary system based on genetic engineering is developed. It emerges style by locating the genetic structures which produce that style. Preliminary results are presented.
