summary The papers represent a wide variety of exploration into the uses of computers in architecture. We have tried to impose order onto the collection by organizing them into six sessions: Metaphor, Mission, Method, Modeling for Visualization, Modeling, and Generative Systems. As with any ordering system for such a diverse selection, some session papers are strongly related while others are loosely grouped. Madness, an additional session not in the proceedings, will include short presentations of work in progress. Regarding the individual papers, it is particularly exciting to see research being conducted that is founded on previous work done by others. It is also interesting to note that half of the papers have been submitted by teams of authors. Whether this represents "computer supported cooperative work" remains to be seen. Certainly the work in this book represents an interesting and wide variety of explorations into computer supported design in architecture.

summary With the research help of Wolfgang Wagener, the students in our computer graphics class are using form•Z, 3D Studio, and Premiere to document and interpret the work of Raphael Soriano. These images are from a class currently underway in fall semester, 1998, at USC. The students are responsible for modeling, rendering, and animating (with the help of GIFBuilder), their buildings in form•Z, with an emphasis on exterior form. Then they model, render, and animate their projects in 3D Studio concentrating on the interior and interpreting how the building might have been furnished. Other studies covered the use of QuickTime VR and Web page development. Additional work will be done to make the work more “realistic” in response to critiques by Wagener. The next stage of the project is to explain the important features of the building through the use of Premiere. Students may choose to use a purely documentary style or MTV approach or other presentation “style” as long as they clearly define the intent of the presentation and then execute it.

summary Many schools of architecture have been attempting to integrate computer applications into their curriculum. This paper will briefly discuss computer-aided design courses that are offered at USC, courses that are similar to those being offered at many universities, and then describe three exceptional cases where the student initiated the use of the computer in a way that was unexpected and different from the methods being taught. A result of conscious deliberation by the student, this experimentation resulted in unexpected discoveries by the instructors of the course. It is this digital serendipity that we wish to explore and discuss. Only occasionally do we hear much about these explorations in formal proceedings and conferences, but they are some of the most intriguing and interesting aspects of computer integration in design.

summary Digital representations have progressed tremendously from the earliest wireframe images to realistic ray-traced renderings that are often indistinguishable from real-life. Yet, in many cases, in the fooling of the eyes, one should not also fool the brain. Especially in the reconstruction of the past, it may be useful for the visualization to also contain information about the certainty of the result. Methods exist to show what data was missing and is now restored and the confidence level of the reconstruction. This in-progress summary paper will discuss the overall usefulness of many of these techniques and list methods from architecture, archaeology, and other fields towards providing information beyond the visualization.

summary We characterize Participatory Design (PD) as a maturing area of research and as anevolving practice among design professionals. Although PD has been applied outside of technologydesign, here we focus on PD in relation to the introduction of computer-based systems at work.We discuss three main issues addressed by PD researchers; the politics of design; the nature ofparticipation; and method, tools and techniques for participation. We also report on the conditionsfor the transfer of “PD results” to workers, user groups, and design professionals that have characterizedPD over time and across geopolitical terrains. The topic of the sustainability of PD within anorganizational context is also considered. The article concludes with a discussion of common issuesexplored within PD and CSCWand frames directions for a continuing dialogue between researchersand practitioners from the two fields. The article draws on a review of PD and CSCW literatures aswell as on our own research and practical experiences.

summary Developments made in the Rapid Prototyping and CAD/CAM (including CNC and Laser) Technologies are giving designers the advantage of building physical realities, at whatever scale, directly and automatically from computer files, with the explicit implications of speed, precision and flexibility. Yet there are modeling details that can only be solved through the use of specialized materials, accessories and miniature tools which neither fall under the CNC, laser or rapid prototyping categories, but complement them. The most emphatic aspect of this research is to show how technical expertise, craftsmanship and detailing in the making of physical models require the intervention of not-so-well-known tools and machines. In the absence of an ideal technology to convert all 3-d digital models into physical models, and despite the advent of CAD-CAM and Rapid Prototyping, the combination of high technology and miniature tooling becomes the ultimate way to go in order to solve many modeling requirements.

title Physical Modeling: the Convergence of Cutting-edge Technologies and Miniature Tooling

summary When Rapid Prototyping and CAD/CAM technologies (including CNC and Laser Cutting) became affordable, ten years ago or so, their reception within model-making circles turned from positive to disappointing because of their incomplete adaptability to the making of architectural objects. Then it was discovered, just few years later, that many modeling details can only be worked out through the use of specific materials, accessories and miniature tools which neither fall under the CNC, Laser or Rapid Prototyping headings. This new situation has implied, among other things, that the status of the model is to be defined in terms of a convergence of particular technological possibilities. Using two specific models as examples, the present article will debate this convergence, which is now allowing a smooth and fluid interaction between several model-making techniques. The tendency of model-making to move closer to the real act of building will also be highlighted.

summary The universe of digital fabrication does not only allow buildings to be produced as quick, precise, multiply-generated objects (prototypes) but also reduces, in a very specific way, their presence as original entities. This implies a radical disjunction between the past and the future of the building industry, with all the intrinsic changes and transformations that might affect both the architectural product and the maker. Drawing mainly on Walter Benjamin’s work on technical reproducibility and information, but also on Barthes’ theory of fashion, the present paper will try to analyze the theoretical and practical implications of these transformations.

summary The miniature replicas of multi-billion dollar property development projects provide every year a spectacle of the vast imagination of architects and master developers at Cityscape Dubai exhibition. The technical aspect of the model-making industry component is a complex one in that it often engages the modelling of very subtle structures such as twisted towers. One illustration of these is the Infinity Tower in Dubai Marina (designed by SOM). To be completed in 2011, this 330-metre high-rise is composed of 80 floors and is intended to be the world’s tallest high-rise featuring a 90_ twist. Each floor rotates by 1.2 degrees to attain the full 90_ spiral, creating the shape of a helix. The paper discusses the physical modelling of this tower, with a description of both the digital and the constructive parts.

summary This paper summarizes the development of goBIM, a model viewer, markup, and data-querying environment that utilizes Apple’s iPhone and Autodesk’s Revit software. Geometric and database information are written to a user defined server location via a custom Revit plugin. Model geometry and database information are loaded at run-time from the web server to the goBIM iPhone application, using a cellular network connection or WiFi. The user can then navigate the 3D environment, selecting objects to view their associated database information. The user has the ability to tag elements in the model with additional data, which can then be pushed back to the server and reloaded in the local version of the Revit model. BIM data can now be accessed anywhere there is a WiFi or cellular network connection available.

Natural disasters and climate change, crime and terrorism, disabilities and society ageing - architects, designers and scientists active in the built environment domain are not able to eliminate all the risk, dangers and problems of contemporary world. On the other hand, they have social and moral responsibilities to address human needs and take up this multifaceted challenge. It involves a co-operation and, moreover, an interdisciplinary and user-oriented approach. The complexity of raised problems should not discourage us, on the contrary, it should stimulate activities towards living up to human dreams of a better and sustainable tomorrow. This calls for a revision of methods and tools applied in research, teaching and practice. Where are we? What are the milestones and roadmaps at the end of the second decade of the 21st century? Do we really take the most of the abundance of accumulated knowledge? Or we skip to explore another undiscovered domains? We invited academicians, researchers, professionals and students from all over the world to address the multifaceted notions of using computing in architectural and related domains for developing a better tomorrow. Approaches discussing the theme from the perspective of computer aided design education; design processes and methods; design tool developments; and novel design applications, as well as real world experiments and case studies were welcomed. In order to specifically address some of the questions above, we defined subthemes and organised specific sessions around these subthemes, during the conference as well as in the proceedings.

summary According to eCAADe's mission, the exchange and collaboration within the area of computer aided architectural design education and research, while respecting the pedagogical approaches in the different schools and countries, can be regarded as a core activity. The current session follows up on the first Contextualised Digital Heritage Workshop (CDHW) held on the occasion of eCAADe 2016 in Oulu (D. di Mascio et.al.) This event was thought to represent the first of a series of future contextualized digital heritage workshops and hence, the name Oulu interchangeable with the name of any other city or place. The second CDHW took place in the framework of CAADRIA 2017 in Suzhou (D. di Mascio & M.A. Schnabel) and focussed on sharing and dissemination of heritage information and personal experiences, such as narratives.The primary objective for the 2018 digital heritage session is to engage participants in an active discussion, not the longer format presentation of prepared positions. The round table itself is limited to short opening statements so as to ensure time is allowed for viewpoints to be exchanged and for the conference attendees to join in on the issues discussed. The panel will review past practices with the potential for guiding future direction.

summary This paper attempts to analyse the results of the multidisciplinary project focused on the holistic approach to education in the field of architectural history and conservation with an extensive use of computer technology. The skills trained usually separately within autonomous courses were brought together to form a “task force” project addressed to the students from two universities in different countries. The increased role of architectural design within a historical context and the need for the corresponding changes in the undergraduate course curricula is also stressed. What is more, the experiment revealed to be an interesting method of exploitation of the power of the computer as a design tool and, what is more, as a design stimulator in the early stage of the architectural design process. In this way the paper contributes also to the discussion on integration of IT within design studio.

summary This paper seeks to illustrate the meaning of multimedia, and more significantly, the importance of implementation of the technology in architectural education and practice as it is today. In order to achieve this, the paper presents an analysis examining the evolution of the definition of multimedia, and then, attempts a classification of multimedia applications in architecture. For the first time, such a classification was created in 1995. It is timely, then, seven years later and in the context of a dramatic advancement in the field, to take stock of how multimedia technology is impacting the sphere of architectural education and practice and to suggest an updated classification.
