title Design Considerations Due to Scale Effects in 3D Concrete Printing

summary The effect of scale on different parameters of the 3D printing of concrete is explored through the design and fabrication of a 3D concrete printed pavilion. This study shows a significant gap exists between what can be generated through computer aided design (CAD) and subsequent computer aided manufacturing (generally based on CNC technology). In reality, the 3D concrete printing on the one hand poses manufacturing constraints (e.g. minimum curvature radii) due to material behaviour that is not included in current CAD/CAM software. On the other hand, the process also takes advantage of material behaviour and thus allows the creation of shapes and geometries that, too, can’t be modelled and predicted by CAD/CAM software. Particularly in the 3D printing of concrete, there is not a 1:1 relation between toolpath and printed product, as is the case with CNC milling. Material deposition is dependent on system pressure, robot speed, nozzle section, layer stacking, curvature and more – all of which are scale dependent. This paper will discuss the design and manufacturing decisions based on the effects of scale on the structural design, printed and layered geometry, robot kinematics, material behaviour, assembly joints and logistical problems. Finally, by analysing a case study pavilion, it will be explore how 3D concrete printing structures can be extended and multiplied across scales and functional domains ranging from structural to architectural elements, so that we can understand how to address questions of scale in their design.

summary Building Performance simulation is escalating towards design optimization worldwide utilizing computational and advanced tools. Egypt has its plan and agenda to adopt new technologies to mitigate energy consumption through various sectors. Energy consumption includes electricity, crude oil, it encompasses renewable and non-renewable energy consumption. Egypt Electricity (EE) consumption by sector percentages is residential (47%), industrial (25%) and commercial (12%), with the remainder used by government, agriculture, public lighting and public utilities (4%). Electricity building consumption has many divisions includes HVAC systems, lighting, Computers and Electronics and others. Lighting share of electricity consumption can vary from 11 to 15 percent in mixed buildings as in our case study which definitely less that the amount used for HVAC loads. This research aims at utilizing shape morphogenesis on facades using geometric shape grammar to enhance daylighting while blocking longwave radiations causing heat stress. Mixed-use building operates in daytime more than night which emphasizes the objective of this study. Results evaluation is referenced to LEED v4.1 and ASHRAE 90.1-2016 window-to-wall ratio calibration and massive wall description. Geometric morphogenesis relies on three main parameters; Pattern (Geometry Shape Grammar: R1, R2, and R3), a reference surface to map from, and a target surface to map to which is the south-western façade of the case study. Enhancing Geo-morph rule is to guarantee flexibility due to the rotation of sun path annually with different azimuth and altitude angles and follow LEED V4.1 enhancements of opaque wall percent for building envelope.

summary This article analyses some of the proposals produced in the late 1970´s by the American contemporary artist Dan Graham, in which he uses technical means to investigate the audience´s perception and behavior. The questions raised highlight reciprocity phenomena and identity constructions – factors that affect our experience and behavior in contemporary cities daily life. All of these issues derive from Graham´s investigations of the main information and communication technologies (media) produced at that time, and which continue to offer reflections on current relationship between technical means and the subject – that is, his/her condition as audience, observer, spectator or user.

summary The gradual rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing visibility among many research disciplines affected Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD). Architectural deep learning (DL) approaches are being developed and published on a regular basis, such as retrieval (Sharma et al. 2017) or design style manipulation (Newton 2019; Silvestre et al. 2016). However, there seems to be no method to evaluate highly constrained spatial configurations for specific architectural domains (such as housing or office buildings) based on basic architectural principles and everyday practices. This paper introduces an automatic constraint-based consistency checker to evaluate the coherency of semantic spatial configurations of housing construction using a small set of design principles to evaluate our DL approaches. The consistency checker informs about the overall performance of a spatial configuration followed by whether it is open/closed and the constraints it didn't satisfy. This paper deals with the relation of spaces processed as mathematically formalized graphs contrary to existing model checking software like Solibri.

summary The increasing population size of cities makes the urban fabric ever more complex and more disintegrated into smaller areas, called neighbourhoods. This project applies methods from geoscience and software engineering to the process of identification of those neighbourhoods. Neighbourhoods, by nature, are defined by connec- tivity, centrality and similarity. Transport and geospatial datasets are used to detect the characteristics of places. An unsupervised learning algorithm is then applied to sort places according to their characteris- tics and detect areas with similar make up: the neighbourhood. The at- tributes can be static like land use or space syntax attributes as well as dynamic like transportation patterns over the course of a day. An un- supervised learning algorithm called Self Organizing Map is applied to project this high dimensional space constituting of places and their attributes to a two dimensional space where proximity is similarity and patterns can be detected – the neighbourhoods. To summarize, the proposed approach yields interesting insights into the structure of the urban fabric generated by human movement, interactions and the built environment. The approach represents a quantitative approach to ur- ban analysis. It reveals that the city is not a polychotomy of neigh- bourhoods but that neighbourhoods overlap and don’t have a sharp edge.

summary This paper reports an academic experimental research conducted at the University of Brasilia. The goal of this study is to develop a product that allows to mitigate the restricted access to visual content such as the study of typography for vision impaired people. Plaques were constructed with input letters in different typefaces making a two-dimensional shape into a three-dimensional object that can be perceived haptically. The modules were presented to visually impaired people who identified the specific characteristics presented.

summary We present our research on the use of immersive stereo- scopic visualisation in interaction with collections of architectural rep- resentations. We investigate the processing and visualisation of multi- ple model representations from architectural datasets. We develop two models for locating collections of datasets in spatial contexts, namely a realistic gallery and a synthetic landscape. We evaluate and report the qualitative interactive experience with two forms of contextual in- teraction within a novel stereoscopic immersive visualisation (cylin- drical projection) environment. The use of immersive stereoscopic visualisation conveys aspects and dimensions of the collections that would not be possible without the forms of contextual interaction, the gallery metaphor and the synthetic landscape to interact with the ar- chitectural collections. The combination of abstract representations with realistic sense of scale and interaction provide the user with an immersive experience to convey the collective form.

summary Complexity-grounded paradigms and self-organization based strategies promise enormous potential when channeled in a design process, but their current stage of development (while delivering groundbreaking results in recent years) hasn't significantly impacted yet the widespread architectural practice. Still, the tendency (in the development of technology and society) is clearly towards an increase in complexity and distributed intelligence, henceforth it is of primary importance to adopt a design approach that allows the harnessing of such potential and convey it in the creation of outcomes that favor a richer and heterogeneous ecological entanglement. To tap this kind of potential in an open-ended process requires a design approach that re-defines the distribution of control, choices and information throughout the whole process (including materials and fabrication processes).The paper explores the possibility of such design approach in the territory that links education and research through a series of Master Thesis developed at the University of Bologna and comparing them to other case studies developed worldwide.

summary This paper includes a brief history about the beginning of the practical application of real genetics to architecture and design. Genetics introduces a privileged point-of-view for both biology and the digital realm, and these two are the main characters (the protagonists) in our posthuman society. With all of its positive and negative aspects, the study of genetics is becoming the cornerstone of our posthuman future precisely because it is at the intersection of both fields, nature and computation, and because it is a science that can command both of them from within—one practically and the other one theoretically. Meanwhile, through genetics and biodigital architecture and design, we are searching at the frontiers of knowledge for planetary benefit. In order to enlighten us about these issues, the hero image (Figure 1) has been created within the framework of scanning electron microscope (SEM) research on the genesic level, where masses of cells organize themselves into primigenic structures. Microscope study was carried out at the same time as the aforementioned genetic research in order to find structures and to learn typologies that could be of interest for architecture, here illustrated as an alternative landscape of the future. summary The knowledge of when the amorphous masses of cells organize themselves into a first structural level is relevant for the architect. The architecture must also attend structural and economic stresses, following efficiency, as living beings do: something that we can learn from nature ("biolearning"), although that level can only be reached with microscope. So this becomes a useful tool for architectural research. Examples of this are presented here, seeking first to discover, analyze and evaluate microscopic structures of plants and animals. summary This paper presents a study that comes from the idea to use human synaesthesia to think and make multisensorials things. The work was based on the principles of syhaesthesia as sensory phenomenon and considering two kind of manifestation called grapheme-color and phoneme-color. The synaesthetic experiences were mapped developping codes, interfaces and devices, to generate digital data, that through Arduino were transmitted to material objects, and visualized with leds RGB. The synaesthesia, made sharable, tangible and experimentable by everyone, can be conceived as tool to generate complex associations between senses and as a natural source to understand and generate multisensoral things.

summary The use of models is one of the oldest media for creating, communicating and representing ideas throughout the ages. An investigation into the nature and characteristics of two modelling techniques in architectural design, i.e. physical and digital modeling, was conducted in the educational and professional domains in two countries. The aim of this study was to establish: (a) the degree of tangibility in model making as opposed to conventional and computational design approach; and (b) the iconic limitation of both types of modelling in design. To this end a survey was carried out among practising architects and students of architecture to establish their preferences and practices with respect to physical and virtual modelling. Some face-to-face interviews were conducted and an online questionnaire was distributed to both the aspiring and established architects. Data gathered through the questionnaire survey, interviews and photographs of the modelling process was analysed to come to tangible conclusions. Hence, this paper presents an insight into the merits and demerits of both the physical and virtual modeling techniques as seen through the eyes of professional and training architects.

summary It has been proposed that, after the internet age, we are now entering a new era of the '/Augmented Age/' (King, 2016). Physician Michio Kaku imagined the future of architects will be relying heavily on Augmented Reality technology (Kaku, 2015). Augmented reality technology is not a new technology and has been evolving rapidly. In the last three years, the technology has been applied in mainstream consumer devices (Coppens, 2017). This opened up possibilities in every aspect of our daily lives and it is expected that this will have a great impact on every field of consumer's technology in near future, including design and fabrication. What is the future of design and making? What kind of new digital fabrication paradigm will emerge from inevitable technological development? What kind of impact will this have on the built environment and industry? FlowMorph is a research project developed in the Bartlett School of Architecture, B-Pro AD with the collaboration of the authors and students as a 12 month MArch programme, we developed a unique design project trying to answer these questions which will be introduced in this paper.

summary Musical improvisation is a complex field of the study of creativity wherein the musician - according to jazz pianist Herbie Hancock - improvises by 'starting with nothing' and 'ending up with something'. We explore a 'Musico-Spatial Design' creative practice design research project that uses parametric spatial design tools to research musical improvisation, then takes knowledge gained from this process to illuminate aspects of improvisation within parametric spatial design processes. Our investigation of musical and parametric spatial design improvisation provides insights into how both novices and experts engage in improvisation and how they don't really 'start with nothing' but bring into the design conversation a varying range of referents to inform designerly intent.

summary Reviewing the current research trends in robotic fabrication around the world, the trajectory promises new opportunities for innovation in Architecture and the possible redefinition of the role of the Architect in the industry itself. New entrepreneurial, innovative start-ups are popping up everywhere challenging the traditional model of the architect. However, it also poses new questions and challenges in the education of the architect today. What are the appropriate pedagogical methods to instill enthusiasm for new technologies, materials, and craft? How do we avoid the pure application of pre-set tools, such as the use of the laser cutter has become, which in many schools around the world has caused problems rather than solving problems? How do we teach students to invent their tools especially in a society that doesn't have a strong background in the making? The primary focus of this paper is on how architectural CAAD/ CAM education through the use of robotic fabrication can enhance student's understanding, passion and knowledge of materiality, technology, and craftsmanship. The paper is based on the pedagogical set-up and method of an M. Arch I studio that was taught by the author in fall 2016 with the focus on robotic fabrication, materiality, traditional timber construction systems, tool design and digital and physical craftsmanship.

summary This article focuses on the use of computational tools to provide dynamic assessment and optimized arrangements while planning and discussing interventions in urban areas. The objective is to address the use of algorithmic systems for generating and evaluating urban morphologies guided by Transit-Oriented Development principles. Transit- Oriented Development is an urban development model that considers geometric and measurable parameters for designing sustainable cities. It advocates compact mixed-use neighborhoods within walking distance to a variety of transportation options and amenities, seeking to result in optimized infrastructure provision and energy-efficient low- carbon districts. This article presents algorithmic experiments for the optimization of a rapid transit district, through its urban morphology and services’ location, providing an accurate Transit-Oriented Development modeling. The main findings of this study highlight that the combination of Transit-Oriented Development and algorithmic–parametric tools has the potential to significantly contribute to a process of responsible planning and, ultimately, to mitigate global warming.
