summary In this paper I describe the use of social cartographies as a tool for design students in a social innovation process with communities. I show the process since the first approach to the communities until the end of the cartographic process and its outcomes. I present the advantages of using social cartographies when facilitating social innovation processes: the high involvement of the participants, how it helps to construct a common language, how it allows to understand the community and how it helped the design students to apprehend the tool for their design practice.

title Programming construction robots using virtual reality techniques

summary The paper describes a new approach to programming construction robots, using virtual reality (VR) techniques. The new approach is needed because both traditional and new methods of programming industrial robots, described in the paper, have specific drawbacks, which become crucial in the construction arena. This is because of the ever-changing environment of construction and its nature, a prototype or one-of-a-kind, industry. As a result, construction robots need much more programming than their industrial counterparts, which is labor intensive using known methods and is not compensated by mass production. The VR approach is demonstrated with the Multi-Purpose Interior Finishing Robot (MPIR) for a masonry task, accompanied by a detailed description of the VR-based programming model and approach.

title Process and quality control with a video camera, for a floor-tilling robot

summary The paper describes the development of a floor-tiling robot. Both the development and the performance measurements of the robot were carried out with a graphic simulation system. Based on those measurements and on a time study of the corresponding manual work, the robot's work output is expected to be 2–5 times higher than that of the manual work. It was decided to concentrate, at this stage of the development, on the robot's autonomy at a workstation, which means that all operations at a workstation –– stabilizing and calibrating, loading tiles, etc. –– including real-time quality assurance (QA) are done without human intervention, while the transfer between workstations is assisted by an operator. The QA function has to identify the exact location and orientation of tiles to be taken, since they may be expected to differ from those specified in the robot's program. This is needed in order to allow accurate placing of the tiles in straight lines and with a uniform distance between them. Additionally, the QA function has to identify defective tiles. A computer vision system was developed to perform the QA functions. The prototype, its operational principles, and the experiments are described. The system's limitations are discussed together with needs for further research.

summary This paper discusses the need for automatic data extraction, processing, and transfer [computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) interfacing] between the design and constructionphases as a key element in computer-integrated construction (CIC). The CAD/CAM interface eliminates the need for manual interfacing between these two computer-aided phases. The CAD/CAM interfaceimproves the process of the constructed facility realization by eliminating the manual data processing and thereby reducing many sources of errors. It also makes the process more cost-effective because it reduceslabor inputs, especially those presently invested in robot programming. A model for automatic data extraction, processing, and transfer is proposed for the tile-setting paradigm. The model generates constructionmanagement data as well as data needed for automatic on-site construction (robotics). The model is implemented in the AutoCAD and AutoLISP environments. The model and the implementation system weretested in the laboratories with a scaled robot adapted to perform interior finishing tasks.

summary There is an absence of lightweight, sustainable construction materials in contemporary Haitian construction, a fact highlighted in the disproportionate loss of life in the 2010 Port-au-Prince earthquake. Between 2014 and 2017 the authors delivered a series of architectural design workshops in Haiti to raise awareness and develop design skills for bamboo using computational design tools. This paper provides a review of these workshops and a preliminary evaluation from surveys conducted with the course participants. Results showed architectural education had changed perceptions of bamboo and showed potential positive ecological impact due to subsequent reforestation activities instigated by participants. Weaknesses were in the lack of subsequent use of parametric modelling software. Bamboo material knowledge and a new architectural design methodology have been most relevant to their professional or academic work.

summary City Digital Twins (CDT) can play a pivotal role in consolidating and visualising complex urban big data, promoting rapid and informed decision making in contemporary cities. Beyond rich contextual data, these tools offer features like interactivity, 3D models and data visualisation, making them ideal for urban planning and design explorations. However current CDT implementations primarily focus on data visualisation and lack any robust design support. Simultaneously, generative urban prototyping occurs in specialised tools, detached from this rich contextual data. This study, on the Virtual Singapore (VSg) CDT platform, explores how the platform’s existing data, interactivity and 3D visualisation capabilities can facilitate rapid prototyping through generative machine learning techniques trained on the city’s unique planning texture; and discusses the challenges and limitations of the platform in supporting the development of such tools, along with potential improvements. The study aims to advance CDTs beyond static data consumption and visualisation towards generative tools for urban planning and decision-making processes.

title On Linguistic Aspects from a Cross-cultural Perspective

summary The goal of this paper is to discuss the issue of culture and its relationship to language and cognition by dealing with a number of lexical concepts, grammatical concepts and cultural scripts. Taking a moderate view, I reconcile universalism and ethnocentrism and argue that the study of culture-specific aspects of language has both a theoretical and practical importance. The role of universal semantic primes is obvious in culture-specific words such as the Japanese amae (a peculiarly Japanese emotion) which, though unique and untranslatable, can be accurately and intelligibly defined in terms of semantic primes (Wierzbicka, 1996). The view that meanings cannot be fully transferred from one language to another is supported by the difference in meaning manifested in the different range of use of the word happy (a common, everyday word in modern English) and joyful (a more literally and stylistically marked term.). A cross-linguistic analysis of the concept ‘happy’in English, Romanian, German, French, Italian, points to the so-called ‘traditional Anglo-Saxon distate for extreme emotions’. As far as aspects of grammar connected with culture are concerned, I compare expressive grammatical devices like intensifiers in English, Romanian and Italian. The question the paper addresses is whether constructions like syntactic reduplication(e.g. bella bella) and the absolute superlative (e.g. bellissimo) are indeed linked with what has been called ‘the theatrical quality’ of Italian life (Barzini, 1964) or not. Relative to Romanian, I assume that the idea of intensity of a state or action is conveyed, in certain registers, by terms and expressions pertaining to basic element source domains such as fire (e.g. frumoasa foc ‘fire-beautiful’) and earth (e.g. frumusetea pamantului ‘beauty of the earth’) and also by syntactic reduplication (e.g. frumoasa-frumoaselor ’beauty of the beauties’). Finally, I approach aspects of pragmatics which are culturally determined in the sense that they express cultural norms, values, ideals, attitudes. For instance, preferences are expressed directly in English while in Japanese this manner is contrary to the ideal of enryo ’restraint, reserve’.

summary As the founder of MIT's Media Lab and a popular columnist for Wired, Nicholas Negroponte has amassed a following of dedicated readers. Negroponte's fans will want to get a copy of Being Digital, which is an edited version of the 18 articles he wrote for Wired about "being digital." Negroponte's text is mostly a history of media technology rather than a set of predictions for future technologies. In the beginning, he describes the evolution of CD-ROMs, multimedia, hypermedia, HDTV (high-definition television), and more. The section on interfaces is informative, offering an up-to-date history on visual interfaces, graphics, virtual reality (VR), holograms, teleconferencing hardware, the mouse and touch-sensitive interfaces, and speech recognition. In the last chapter and the epilogue, Negroponte offers visionary insight on what "being digital" means for our future. Negroponte praises computers for their educational value but recognizes certain dangers of technological advances, such as increased software and data piracy and huge shifts in our job market that will require workers to transfer their skills to the digital medium. Overall, Being Digital provides an informative history of the rise of technology and some interesting predictions for its future.

summary Digital media are transforming the practice and teaching of design. Information technologies offer not only better production and rendering tools but also the ability to model, manipulate, and to understand designing in new ways. This paper outlines a thirteen-step methodology used in a seminar that teaches design students how to see, think, and form space using both digital and physical media.

The paper describes a systematic approach that follows the tradition of the Bauhaus principles of craftsmanship and visual perception. Precedents are drawn from the use of light, color and texture in the visual arts such as the glass collage assemblages of Albers and Moholy-Nagy’s camera-less photogram. References are also drawn from Kandinsky’s diagrammatic analysis of still life drawings and Kepes’s idea of the language of vision.

The focus of the paper is how digital media and physical material can be used interchangeably as instruments in a design environment. The investigation centers on developing teaching methods for seeing, thinking and making of spatial design. A sequence of experimental exercises stimulates students’ intuition and powers of analytical observation. This systematic approach helps students explore how space can be perceived and informed by using types of media that are significantly different in their nature. The methodology explores the concerns and techniques of making and exploring space through the use of light, shadow, motion, color and transparency.

summary This paper present the process of virtual world’s adaptation to the vision of the real environment designed by the children of two primary Thai schools – a state school and a private school. The main point of the present paper is presentation of empirical research that is an analysis of four exercises – inquiries in which I asked children to draw the elements of their city and social life. The first task was to represent a route from home to school. Next, children were asked to draw the plan of their school, on which they had to differentiate the places dedicated to them, the common spaces and the spaces for another people. The last exercise done at school was related to the description of their family and their closest friends. At the end, the children were asked to draw an inside of their houses with the maximum of details. The results of representations of the daily life environments analysed and synthesised were rebuilt with the graphic computer tools. They will serve as the base of the conception of a 3D virtual village dedicated to the Thai children.

summary The main goal for the architects or planners is to understand a perspective of the user. The foundation of the design process is to create buildings and environments, which will be both innovative and functional for all types of users, including adults and children. While planning the environments for children the particular aspects should be considered. The important questions are: What kind of contact does child have with the city, urban places and buildings? How does the child construct the picture of the city? What kind of urban or architectural spaces contributes to the relation that a child has with the environment? Most of the previous studies concentrating on creation of spaces for children have focused on the perspectives that have adults. According to CAADRIA 2010 paper, the objective of our study was to “learn about” (get to know the) children’s perception of everyday places. The main goal of the project was to define an appropriate tool for the design process. We identified three elements, which were considered to be the most important for child’s identification with environment: home, school, and the journey from home to school. For this purpose, children living in a residential community in Bangkok were surveyed. Contrariwise to the quantitative approach (Neisch, 2010), the concept of Colour – Code Models of space propose a qualitative development of this research – a graphic language which allow to understand the children’s spatial world, the novel way to analyze and present space, useful for educate architects and planners.

summary The present research introduces a novel parametric approach for the construction of PPE, a face mask inspired from takeaway food packaging and kirigami techniques. The technique requires only foldable planar material with no gluing or binding. The design is customizable to the users face using an augmented reality application and automatic processing in the Grasshopper environment. Using the proposed workflow, a personal mask can be constructed from a cutting and folding pattern printed on any household 2d printer. This makes it one of the most affordable and fast techniques for artisanal PPE existent now.

title Source Studio: Teaching Programming For Architectural Design

summary The architectural studio framework presented here is based on the use of programming as central form generation reflexive medium (Schon, 1983). Its aim is to teach architectural design while introducing a different approach toward computer tools by enabling students to fully explore variations in their designs through the use of coding for form definition. It proposes the students to reflect on their design process through its confrontation to algorithmic formalization (Mitchell 1990). This results in exercising the synthetic re-thinking of their initial sketch intents to comply with the difficult task of fitting the language syntax. With the proliferation and constant replacement of computer tools among the architectural practice, a shift appears in the attitude towards introducing students to different tools: studio teaching is branded by specific software platforms advocated by the teaching team. A lack of generalized view, independent of commercial CAD software, is problematic for the definition of new teaching tools suited for this constantly evolving situation (Terzidis, 2006).

summary This is a revised and updated edition of Graham Nerlich's classic book The Shape of Space. It develops a metaphysical account of space which treats it as a real and concrete entity. In particular, it shows that the shape of space plays a key explanatory role in space and spacetime theories. Arguing that geometrical explanation is very like causal explanation, Professor Nerlich prepares the ground for philosophical argument, and, using a number of novel examples, investigates how different spaces would affect perception differently. This leads naturally to conventionalism as a non-realist metaphysics of space, an account which Professor Nerlich criticises, rejecting its Kantian and positivistic roots along with Reichenbach's famous claim that even the topology of space is conventional. He concludes that there is, in fact, no problem of underdetermination for this aspect of spacetime theories, and offers an extensive discussion of the relativity of motion.

summary Starting from the need for assistive technologies and resources for children with atypical development, this article aimed to evaluate the application of a set of teaching materials, co-created for elementary school children, made through digital fabrication by architects, presenting the application in the school environment of the first workshops with teachers who work with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. To this end, a literature review was carried out on Codesign, Autism Spectrum Disorder, assistive technologies and educational toys. It also presented the relationships between the design process and the children's learning process. The research was divided into stages of bibliographic review, field research through interviews, and action research with teachers. At the end of this work, we hope to understand the concepts and teaching approaches for children with ASD, and with this, evaluate whether it is possible to create an equitable and effective school environment, stimulating the maker culture.

summary The project “IDA Bicycle” proposes the virtual study and exploration of the use of digital technologies in the virtual development of an urban bike without the construction of three-dimensional physical models. With the use of graphic platforms and adequate software for each stage of the project it was possible to study new configurations for the object. The new systems of design and simulation of reality makes possible the careful study of aesthetic forms and aerodynamics of the bike. It was also possible to carryout tests that analyzed the structural quality of the object.

title CAPTURING THE ENVIRONMENT: using photogrammetry to register the built environment for simulation

summary This study tested two forms of data gathering, three different methods of data registration, and two of modeling for the creation of 3D models of heritage landmarks. The applications on elements of three different scales were tested, a Cathedral, a Monument, and an Art Panel. The open-source Meshroom resulted in the best model in measures of mesh detail, reconstruction capability, and mesh refinement, regardless of the data acquisition method. Results may aid researchers and designers in choosing a workflow that suits their needs developing the best model possible, according to the tools they have at their disposal.
