summary In this paper, we will stress the importance of usability as a key quality characteristic for the Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) software prototypes. We claim that usability evaluation practices can assist the integration of human factors and the accommodation of local differences. These practices are not solely limited to interface tests, but they can also provide valuable information on the possible added values of CAAD software prototypes, increase the overall product quality and thus contribute to the sustainable development of the CAAD research field. In this context, we aim to initiate a constructive discussion on this topic by reviewing various usability frameworks and highlighting possible opportunities and challenges of applicable evaluation methods. Consequent to this discussion, we will elaborate on our recent findings relating to the reliability and effectiveness of particular evaluation methods applied to a web-based geographic virtual environment prototype. In conclusion, we will introduce a new “design usability” framework that is suitable for CAAD software development; which suggests a variety of design usability quality characteristics, cost-effective evaluation methods and possible influence factors in the evaluation process.

summary In this paper, we discuss the different applications of virtual city and environment models within different frameworks and try to reveal their important qualities in relation with their approaches for creating prospective urban developments. Certain uses of urban models and technologies are examined through seven critical cases with a focus on (what) is being modeled, place (where), actors (who), date (when), objectives (why) and approaches (how) adopted for design and development. In the elaboration part, we evaluate and comparatively discuss the interrelated conditions or circumstances that form the setting for these models. In conclusion, a new understanding of Geographical Virtual Environments is reviewed and the critical questions that can determine the future prospects are addressed.

summary In this paper, we will discuss the opportunities and challenges of using a Web-based Geographic Virtual Environment Prototype, primarily developed in the framework of a long-term research project by Pak and Verbeke (2011), as a complementary medium to support an international urban design studio. We reconfigured and rescaled this prototype with the objective of encouraging students to make a collaborative, open-source and location-based analysis of the fragile project area (the Brussels-Charleroi Canal) and share their findings with each other. During this eight week long experimental study, the students were able to effectively use the environment during the analysis phase of the urban design studio; despite their heterogeneous profiles. They created an online inventory that covers five gigabytes of analysis findings, sketches, photos, maps, studio presentations and texts describing their experiences. This environment shows the power of crowdsourcing and online collaborative analysis. Moreover, the findings of our online student survey demonstrate a general positive attitude towards the use of the Virtual Environment Prototype.

summary In this paper, we will explore the potentials of low-cost portable immersive environments that combine textile structures, gesture-based interfaces and multiple projections. Our aim is to develop affordable, easy to set up, portable and inviting immersive spaces that can serve as an interface between a web-based geographic virtual environment, experts and lay people. In this context, after the introduction, we will review a variety of methods, conceptual tools and materials related to textile tectonics and techniques which can be individually used or combined for the development and construction of portable immersive spaces. In the next section, we will discuss the opportunities and challenges of using a low-cost gesture-based interface (Kinect) to support “touchless” interactions. Consequently, we will present the design alternatives of low-cost portable immersive spaces that we have synthesized from our background studies. This will be followed by the observations and findings from our prototype development, implementation and preliminary testing processes. In conclusion, we will discuss our conclusions and recommendations regarding the future development of low-cost portable immersive spaces.

summary The manufacture of concrete funicular shells often relies on traditional formwork construction techniques to provide a sculptured cavity for the fluid material to occupy (Bechthold, 2004). While this enables a predictable geometric outcome, the extensive use of timber and/or steel to construct these formworks account for up to 60% of the total production cost of concrete and are discarded after the casting is complete (Lloret et al. 2014). Thus, we propose an alternative method to create prefabricated modular systems out of concrete casted in customised tubular knitted membranes. These perform as a network of struts that can be affixed onto 3D printed nodes of a singular design. Altogether, these components serve as a kit-of-parts that can be transported to site and assembled together to create shell geometries.

summary In this paper we describe an integrated decision-making environment that brings together several different building simulation tools, and provides the data management and process control required for their integrated use, from the initial, schematic phases of building design. The output of one tool is easily used as input to another, either directly, or after appropriate manipulation to ensure compatibility, which makes the whole integrated environment more than the sum of its parts. A simple graphical user interface, common to all simulation tools, allows access to all building parameters and supports multicriterion judegment by allowing side-by-side comparison of multiple alternative designs with respect to multiple performance parameters.

summary This paper describes a research studying the tactical appropriation of location-based informational media in urban space. More specifically, we are concerned with using these techniques as a ludic tool to shed light in the processes of urban transformations and preservation of heritage in the city of Rio de Janeiro, using Morro do Castelo as a case study. This research is divided in three parts: the first comprises a historical review of the demolition of Morro do Castelo; the second consists in the elaboration of a set of points of interest related to the theme downtown Rio; the third involves the creation of a proof-of-concept prototype using the Actionbound platform, conducting a few field tests to evaluate the consistency of the itinerary. The results indicate the potential of location-based games as a tool for cultural heritage education, as well as the inherent difficulties in designing such experiences.

summary One of the major challenges facing the professionals involved in the home modification process is to succeed in adapting the environments in a way that enables an optimal fit between the individual and the setting in which he or she operates. The challenge originates primarily from the fundamental characteristic of design - one can see and test the final result of home modifications only after they have been completed. The goal of this study was to address this problem by developing and evaluating an interactive living environments model, HabiTest, which will facilitate the planning, design and assessment of optimal home and work settings for people with physical disabilities. This paper describes the HabiTest tool, an interactive model that has been implemented via an immersive virtual reality system which displays three-dimensional renderings of specific environments, and which responds to user-driven manipulations such as navigation within the environment and alteration of its design. Initial results of a usability evaluation of this interactive environment by users are described.

summary Our research objective is searching for a model of an projection process that appropriately involves digital systems and analog proceedings of Industrial Design projection by taking advantage of each medium. Aim is to amplify projection abilities of students by increasing their expressive and cognitive possibilities. For this reason, we have finished an experimentation within a class of digital graphics. We have found that analog means are a motivation in learning with digital tools, assuming that the technique is guided by the concept already defined by means of software experimentation. In addition, we have concluded that students learned more dynamic, because it was focused to practice and not to pure theory, which can be easily forgotten by students.

summary This paper outlines the features of responsive architecture with emphasis on sensing-based kinetic design. The emphasis of our work is mainly on developing kinetic design methods that apply to responsive architecture. The kinetic design method is demonstrated by an experimental system called Mimosa. Mimosa is a responsive architecture prototype that can alter its shape in response to climate conditions. summary An emerging need for interactive architecture is currently making buildings mutable, flexible in use, and adaptable to changes in climate by introducing robotic systems. However, the feasibility of the seamless integration of building construction details and kinetic robotics has become a critical issue for developing robotic architecture. The objective of this work is to develop a robotic architecture with an emphasis on the integration of cellular robotics with a distributed kinetic building surface. The kinetic building surface integrates an actuating system, a localization and remote control system, which become part of the kinetic building system. This paper presents a systematic framework by reviewing theories and related work of robotic architecture and automated control. An architectural design scheme is proposed to simulate a scenario of application in a physical space. The functionality of the electrical and control system and the integration of the effects of actual construction were examined by a prototype of a kinetic surface. Our prototype presents a feasible construction method, and a prominent energy-saving effect. The potential strength and restrictions of the cellular robotic approach to architectural applications are discussed. The applicability of the prototype system and issues about controlling the behavior of spatial robots are demonstrated in this paper.

summary The underlying surface temperature is an effective evaluation index to study the urban micro-scale thermal environment. For surface temperature acquisition, the thermal infrared camera mounted on a unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) can reduce field work intensity, improve data collection efficiency, and ensure high accuracy at low cost. In order to convert the 2D thermal image into a more intuitive 3D thermal model, the UAV-based thermal infrared 3D reconstruction is adopted. The key element of thermal infrared 3D model reconstruction lies in the processing of thermal infrared images with low resolution and different temperature scales. In order to improve the quality of the final thermal 3D model, this paper proposes the reconstruction of the detailed 3D mesh using visible images (higher resolution), and map then mapping thermal textures onto the mesh using thermal images (low resolution). In addition, absolute temperature values are extracted from thermal images with different temperature ranges to ensure consistence between color and temperature values in the reconstructed thermal 3D model. The thermal 3D model generated for an existing residential area in Nanjing successfully displays the temperature distribution of the underlying surface and provides a valuable basis for outdoor thermal environment assessment.

summary Digital environmental simulations can present a computational bottleneck concerning the complexity of geometry. Therefore, a series of workarounds, ranging from cloud-based solutions to machine learning simulations as surrogate simulations are conventionally applied in practice. Concurrently, contemporary advances in procedural modelling in architecture result in design concepts with high polygon counts. This leads to an ever- increasing resolution discrepancy between design and analysis models. Responding to this problem, this research presents a step-by-step approximation workflow for handling and transferring high-resolution geometries between procedural modelling and environmental simulation software. The workflow is intended to allow designers to quickly assess a design’s interaction with environmental parameters such as airflow and solar radiation and further articulate them. A controllable voxelization procedure is applied to approximate the original geometry and therefore reduce the resolution. Controllable in this context refers to the user’s ability to locally adjust the voxel resolution to fit design needs. After export and simulation, 3d results are imported back into the design environment. The colour properties are re-mapped onto the original high- resolution geometry following a weighted proximity technique. The developed data transfer pipeline allows designers to integrate environmental analysis during initial design steps, which is essential for accessibility in the design profession. This can help to environmentally inform generative designs as well as to make simulation workflows more accessible when working with a wider range of geometries. In this, it reduces the perceived discrepancy between the concept and simulation model. This eases the use and allows a wider audience of users to develop co-creation processes between computation, architecture, and environment.
