summary Buildings with complex shapes are increasingly being constructed using digital fabrication tools. However, many building components nevertheless require specialised skills for their assembly at the construction site, even if the manufacturing has been streamlined. In this study, by practising an agile design process that repeats the method of ‘Add-on the tool’ and ‘feedback on form and material, we devised a construction method that allows unskilled workers to be involved in the fabrication of pavilions and the creation of complex curved surfaces without requiring special skills, so long as the rules of assembly are determined. In this study, a method of achieving large curvatures using wire bending of Y-shaped wooden units made of 4-mm thick lauan veneer boards was proposed, in which large curvatures were used to design two-dimensionally curved surfaces with continuous wavy shapes. This method was also used to control the force applied to the wires by controlling their lengths. The free curved surface with the elastic bending of the plywood allowed a height of 2.3 m and a span of 6 m.

summary With the advancement of augmented and virtual reality technologies both in scale as well as accessibility, the Metaverse (Stephenson, 1992, Hughes, 2022) has emerged as a new digital space with potential for the application of architectural creativity and design. With blockchain integration, the concept of the Metaverse shows promise in creating a “decentralised” space for design and creativity with rewards for its participants. As a platform that incorporates these technological components, does the Metaverse have utility for architectural design? Is there something truly novel in what the Metaverse brings to architectural computing, and architectural design? The paper constructs a qualitative knowledge graph that can be used for the evaluation of various kinds of Metaverses in and for architectural design. We use Design Science Research methods to develop the knowledge graph and its evaluative capacity, stemming from our experience with two Metaverses, Decentraland and Cryptovoxels. The paper concludes with a discussion of knowledge and practice gaps that are evident, framing the opportunities that architects might have in the future in terms of developing Metaverse(s).

summary Quadtree representation of two-dimensional objects is performed with a tree that describes the recursive subdivision of the more complex parts of a picture until the desired resolution is reached. At the end, all the leaves of the tree are square cells that lie completely inside or outside the object. There are two great disadvantages in the use of quadtrees as a representation scheme for objects in geometric modeling system: The amount of memory required for polygonal objects is too great, and it is difficult to recompute the boundary representation of the object after some Boolean operations have been performed. In the present paper a new class of quadtrees, in which nodes may contain zero or one edge, is introduced. By using these quadtrees, storage requirements are reduced and it is possible to obtain the exact backward conversion to boundary representation. Algorithms for the generation of the quadtree, boolean operation, and recomputation of the boundary representation are presented, and their complexities in time and space are discussed. Three- dimensional algorithms working on octrees are also presented. Their use in the geometric modeling of three-dimensional polyhedral objects is discussed

summary In this study, we revisit the concepts of abstraction and materialization with regards to the theoretical framework of new materialism. Underlining the changing relationship between design through abstraction (DtA) and design through materialization (DtM) in design history, we propose an integration of the two towards achieving design emergence. Additional to a theoretical framework, we provide a showcase through material experiments of plaster and abstractions in the form of shape computation. We discuss results as parameters for future digital implementations and potentials for design practice and education.

summary This research critically challenges the conventional perception of drawings as mere technical blueprints and delves into the intricate integration of design ideation, abstraction, and speculation with geometrical manipulations and semantic labelling. By focusing on unconventional architectural design studio experiments at the undergraduate level, the study aims to explore the role of creativity in speculative drawing. It adopts a 3- dimensional design thinking process that transcends the rigid constraints of traditional drawings and embraces the fluidity of representational norms. Furthermore, the paper elucidates on the pedagogical aspects of the design studio, including the unstructured creativity inherent in the design process. The methodology employed in this study is exemplified through different stages of the design studio, incorporating a variety of representations such as 2D, 2.5D, and 3D,encompassing scalar, geometric, and material transfigurations. To assess the outcomes of the studio, the research utilises correlation diagrams that establish connections between digital drawing features at different stages and the unstructured creativity manifested in the final design. These scatter and correlation diagrams capture the syntactic relationships between the objects within digital drawings. The findings of this study reveals insight on the nuanced interplay between intuitive, reflective, and retrospective aspects of unstructured creativity during the design ideation process. By unraveling the intricate role of digital design tools and methods this research contributes to a deeper understanding of of how design ideation is generated and manifested through the dynamic interplay of the modulating compounds of drawing objects. It highlights the significance of meaningful, conceptual, and speculative representations that directly relate to the creation of buildable forms and architectural spaces. Through its critical insights, this study paves the way for advancements in the field of CAAD and offers valuable perspective for architectural education and practice.

summary Planning methodology over the years, has shifted from situations whereby planners think, plan and design for the people to one whereby both people and planners have become important components of the planning process. Consequently, the important urban planning methodology of the last two decades that utilized mathematical models in the planning process is fast becoming obsolete. The paper argues that model building should move to the creation of urban decision support systems for the planning process through the development of expert systems shells that interfaces existing planning models with the knowledge content of planning and planners. The expert system shells as the set of decision rules for determining how existing supply and demand relationships are applied for modelling land use and transportation would be responsible forguiding the development of appropriate geographical information systems, supporting land use and other models in a coordinated manner, for communicating with these other systems componentsand for guiding interactions between them and the user. Furthermore, decision support systems should be designed to bring the whole of the knowledge base to bear on a problem through a flexible and adaptive solution system that makes explicit use of both the analysts models and the decision makers expert knowledge. It is argued that this understanding leads to the development of three crucial issues for the design of decision support systems in urban and regional planning;namely the development of user friendly integrated urban land-use transportation models, the development of expert geographical information systems and the development of expert systemshells for many of the routine tasks planners deal with.

summary Unprecedented growth of hybrid settlements causes deterioration to the indoor environmental quality. Due to their narrow street-networks and fully packed urban fabric, lower floors are subjected to severe overshadow condition, which has adverse effects on the health of the inhabitants. This paper aims to investigate techniques to mitigate the under-lit indoor environment for a group of buildings with variable heights and orientations, with regard to the urban façades parameters. It reflects an intervention in an existing hybrid settlements, within hot-desert climate, to alter façades configurations for daylight optimization, and ultimately recover the lost indoor quality of users in such contexts.

summary Thank you to the ACADIA team for extending the invitation to come here. For me, it's a really fantastic moment to reconnect with the ACADIA community. I've been dipping in and out of it since -- I think my first ACADIA was in Savannah, Georgia. Does anyone remember what year that was? 2001? 2002? I've been dipping in and out. And I really see this community as a model. You know, we could talk about the Mississippi and how it meanders, and passages of energy and matter and information begin to change. And the ACADIA community meanders across these different territories, but somehow it maintains its particular identity. And that identity, I think, is shrouded within ideals of sharing -- knowledge sharing -- and within a kind of creative design research, you know, rigor, which I find really fascinating.

summary The paper states that, as a result of the schism between architecture as art and engineering as rationalism, the architectural community underestimates the computer as tool with a potential to substantially enlarge the possibilities of building design. It is claimed that the computer could serve as coordination tool for the ruptured design process, as a virtual workbench where all design disciplines sit together and develop their designs in enhanced conscience of what the whole design demands. The paper then concludes, that to develop such software tools, architects must participate in the development of software and may no longer be restricted to the role of applicants, especially during their universitary instruction. The corresponding research and training facilities at the University of Karlsruhe, Faculty of Architecture are described.

summary This paper presents a critical analysis and reflection on stereotomy with the purpose of updating its theoretical discourse. Having risen to the apex of architecture technological possibilities in the 17th century, stereotomic construction lost its importance in favour of iron, steel and other materials and construction techniques brought by the Industrial Revolution. More recently, much owing to the possibilities offered by digital technologies, a resurgence of interest in the subject has spawned various researches which bring stereotomy back to the architectural discourse. Although technological applications and design innovations in service of stereotomy have developed in multiple interesting paths, there is a lack of a common theory on the subject which is capable of relating these multiple apparently diverging stereotomic approaches between each other and, maybe even more importantly, to the classical practice which sparked the development this discipline. The research presented in this paper shows how the digital tools were instrumental in bringing this tradition to architecture contemporaneity and how a current stereotomy is largely supported by these technologies, while keeping strong relations to its classic origin.

summary The developments of digital technology applied to architecture in the recent decades has allowed for direct communication from the studio to fabrication. However, this process is typically dependent on complicated computational processes, enlarging the distance from the benefits of the traditional drawing approaches employed by architects. This research intends to explore possibilities of reenacting the drawing as a means of computational generative design which feeds automated systems of construction. By using a Cobot directed by an algorithm which reads a simple drawn curve on paper, an automated brick wall is built, as demonstrated in two exhibitions. This mixed approach allows for technology in architectural design and construction to be more accessible to a wider audience, while blurring the boundaries between concept and materialization.

title Laying the foundations for using generative AI images in architectural research: do images convey the intended spaces and ambiances?

summary The advent of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) models, such as Stable Diffusion, Open AI's DALL-E2, and MidJourney, has opened the door to a huge range of new possibilities in architectural research and practice. Before architects and researchers can fully leverage these models, it is crucial to assess their proficiency in generating images that accurately depict real spaces and ambiances. Here, we assessed the proficiency of DALL-E2 in depicting intended spaces and intended ambiances, using real photographs from Google Images as a comparative benchmark. Images of eighteen distinct home spaces, each intended to evoke three different ambiances, were generated and presented to human observers. The images were evaluated in terms of their perceived realism, their accuracy in depicting the space and ambiance intended. Findings highlight GenAI's capability in depicting spaces and point to its potential in convincingly conveying ambiances. Beyond the substantive findings, this research highlights the importance of evaluating the rapidly emerging tools enabled by recent developments in AI.

summary The paper presents an ongoing research about the design and a possible use of a responsive flexible mold. The mold is developed by integrating its precedents with automation and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The objective of the design is to provide an immersive design tool which has direct link to fabrication. It allows intuitive interaction to its user in order to help with the design and production of complex forms by supporting the designer's implicit skills with computer. The paper presents the design by illustrating the use of the hardware such as the actuators, the sensor and the projector; and by defining the workflow within the software. summary As computers were newly emerging in the field of architectural design, it was claimed that the impact of computers would change the way architects design and present. However, within the course of computer use in design, although the field of architectural practice might have been altered extremely, in architectural education there still seems to be a bond to conventional mind-hand-paper relation. One of the reasons for that bond is the fact that although being r 1000 elated to many technologies, architecture essentially positions itself around an artistic core that is still fed with conventional modes of creation. Architectural education aims at adopting and working on this very core. One of the major contributors in the formation of this core is the presence of author identity. This paper makes a critical approach to computers in terms of expressing author identity in design presentations especially during design education. We believe that the author identity is important in design education in terms of identifying the potential and skills of the student. Especially in design education the final step of design process turns out to be the presentation, unlike architectural practice where the presented design is actually built. Within this conception, two different studies were held in an educational environment with 160 design students and 20 design instructors. The results of both studies pointed at the fact that the digital opportunities that exist for design education should evolve around preserving and underlining the author identity in design presentations.

summary Since the advent of industrialized processes in modern construction industries, the development of and relationship between computer-aided tools of design and computer-controlled tools of fabrication has steadily yielded new and innovative construction methodologies. Whilst industry has adopted many of these innovations for use by highly efficient machines and flexible processes, their operation is often highly dependent on industrial scales of production, and thus often inaccessible for small-scale, bespoke and affordable application. The prototype integrated joint milling methodology, case study and open-source software plugin ‘Dove’ presented in this paper, explores the efficacy of algorithmic processes in dynamically generating complex tooling paths and machine code for fabrication of bespoke dovetail and finger joints on a 6-axis industrial robot. The versatility, speed and precision of 6-axis robotic milling, allows us to liberate the efficiency, integrity and aesthetic of the dovetail and finger joint types from traditional application, and apply them to new architectures involving mass-customisation, complex form, and diverse materialities. In the development of full-immersion milling toolpaths and back-face filleting techniques that drastically reduce cutting times, tool path complexity and material waste, this study seeks to build upon past and current research by proposing a comparatively simple, efficient and more intuitive approach to robotically-fabricated integrated jointing for application at a variety of scales.

summary The aim of this report is to develop a digital pattern easy to use, which will be a suitable tool to display images and texts for academic purposes. The proposal is done through the configuration of a html code page. Besides the study proposes to carry out a digital catalog in order to make easy the files and communication of graphic and photographic documentation. The case of some urban transformations in Rosario's riverside sets an example of its use and verifies its potential condition.
