Our purpose is to implement a digital tool based on a genetic algorithm, which uses environmental parameters and human interplay to evolve an architectural form. The analysis of design processes and CAD use lead us to mark a transformation of design process at a cognitive level.

summary Our paper presents research on the development of technologies and methodologies to support preliminary design phases through data based modelling. A digital parametric model informs costs evaluations and supports iterative and visual space exploration solutions. Thanks to associative modelling, the architectural conception is renewed and digital tools support design decision-making in a creative way. We propose to make project cost a design parameter through an interactive handling of a 3D geometric model that is relevant to strategic architectural intentions. In our experimentation, cost calculation spreadsheets are linked to a parametric models. An initial substructure of the building cost is defined based on the architectural concepts. The parametric tool directly informs the evaluation spreadsheet and a real time cost analysis is afforded to the designer. The tool supports the design process by displaying immediate feed back to the designer who can consider and control the financial implications of his hypothesis.

summary To generate models of branched and reticular urban layouts, under three different forms of growth (linear, radial, strips), a program designed on AutoLISP Æ for the AutoCAD Æ V-2000 has been proposed. The generated models are both graphical as well as mathematical, and for each case are produced, considering the two variables assumed as inputs: the number of houses and the number of grouping units. The mathematical data is automatically saved in a MSExcel Æ spreadsheet created through a direct connection established from the AutoCAD Æ V-2000.

During the numerous debates on the relationship between multimedia and communication of the project a long list of problems emerged: the understanding and the management of explorable fields opened by these new media; the informative overflow that can introduce irrelevant information; the "interactive" anxiousness that produces a continuous jumping from one theme to another without any understanding; the identification of the right contents of a multimedia product, that requires an elaborate culture of media languages; the education of the users on new models of learning. From the debates emerged in short a principal point: the necessity to study and to experiment a "multimedia tool" able of transmitting knowledge not through a simple sum of data but through a group of information. If every single tool has -its own characteristics and if the combinations are not automatic, then the modes and contents should be examined. Is it possible therefore to invent a strategy of communication?

summary The structure of major European cities was formed in recent years more by stratification of different patterns, as it seems, than by urban planning. Moreover traditional analytical tools - such as cartography, which defines and symbolizes static data and their spatial connections - are not able to decode any more the image of cities. Modern city means not only static form, as public space is not a simple function. city includes movement, temporary objects, changing perceptions, fluxes. Therefore hypertexts could he a chance of building up and propagate a real knowledge about modern city. an effective action to reach qualification and management of urban spaces through citizens direct involvement in the city construction. A hypertext on the Rome quarter "Esquilino" has been carried out as an open structure, to probe the new representation method trough the construction of the real "image" of the quarter, gathering different information as historical, geographic and socioeconomical data, urban projects, citizens proposals.

summary Many in the design community have long claimed that digital mass-customization is cheaper, faster, smarter and more environmentally sustainable than the mechanical mass-production of standardized industrial products; and that the electronic transmission of information is cheaper, faster, smarter, and more environmentally sustainable than the mechanical transportation of people and goods. The global pandemic has tragically proven that a computational alternative to the modern, mechanical way of making, working, and living, now exists, and it is viable. When we had to shut down corporate offices, global megafactories, suburban shopping malls, and intercontinental airports, we did. We did because we had to; but also because today's technology already allows us to do so.

summary By means of clinical analysis, it has been observed that patients who must remain in bed for long periods due to the nature of the pathology they suffer, develope pressure sores by decubitus which become serious complications themselves. In our thesis we intend to propose an alternative from our Industrial Design point of view, we'll explain how to avoid the problems aforementioned. For the development of this thesis we've chosen computer software from CAD systems as an instrumental methodology. These systems allowed as to develop a theoretical model of interface. The empirical foundation on which our model is based, lies on the systematic analysis of the classic technique of pressore sores prevention. In computer simulation, a flexible plate, driven by a set of actuators, defines a kinematic behavior equivalent to the one produced by classic method. Two theoretical models were used, Model 1 and Model 2. Model 2 was created as a consequence of certain functional and ergonomic disorders found in electronic 3D maquettes developed during the design of Model 1. The development of Model 2 became the significant nucleus upon which the exposition of the theoretical model was centered.

summary The operation and construction of buildings account for almost half of the energy use in the United States. To meet global climate change targets, energy consumption of buildings in the long term must be reduced as well as carbon dioxide emissions. This article explores a theoretical building envelope that generates energy and produces water by drawing water vapor out of the air to deliver new sources of water; it lowers indoor humidity in hot and humid climates. The design in this model considers materiality, surface area and environmental conditions to influence build- ing form. The case in this article considers materials and systems application in the design of the building envelope. The hygroscopic building envelope design strategically senses varying conditions of concentration and density of moisture laden air to provide visual indications of its performance. It is a building skin that emulates biological processes by creating pressure differences and transferring energy in various forms.

summary The Vibrant Fields project endeavors to construct novel representational tectonics of urbanization, aiming to comprehend the materiality of forms and the genesis of multispectral relations within complex information systems governing the interplay of atmospheric and embodied energy cycles in the biosphere. This project asserts that any perceivable condition of nature arises from dynamic processes that transcend human sensory perception. The project observes the simultaneous realities and temporalities of urban field information within its ecological context. It investigates the architecture, technology, flora, and fauna of cities in relation to their geographic, geological, and ecological conditions, analyzing multiple temporal historical and geological scales. Inspired by theoretical biology, the project models the urban environment as a systemic entity characterized by modularity, representing the biosphere's dynamic interplay of chemical and physical elements engaged in information exchange within ecological systems, influenced by technology, geography, and atmospheric conditions. summary OTTO (Orthographic Trans-territorial Operator) is a sensory device that collects data on the urban environment through multi-spectral sensing to study urban energy flows. We hypothesize that urban nature and energy are a combination of biological and technological factors that interact in a symbiotic environmental cycle. By examining their relationships, we can gain insight into the impact of climate change. OTTO aims to create a high-res survey of the urban environment by using a new combination of multi-spectral bands. This research maps the relationship between urban form and energy exchange to gain a deeper understanding of urban microclimates through multiple types of energy data.

summary We argue that a re-integration of computer technology into a design curriculum is possible without necessarily displacing traditional subjects or time-honored notions of building and place. An ideal computer curriculum might be one that merges computer technologies into existing courses more progressively than is typical today and at the same time looks to the studio teaching method as a catalyst for shifting perspectives on the relevant areas of design theory and methods. This position paper asserts a framework for a design educational program which integrates the use of computer technology. In posing such a curriculum, this position paper also attempts to work within some professional accreditation constraints that Schools may need to address.

summary The first generations of computer aided design systems were largely characterized by geometrical modeling software that could, in some applications, generate physical output in the form of computer aided manufacturing. More recently the technology has expanded to include a variety of ways to reverse direction, such that physical objects are captured and translated into computer graphics geometrical models. Laser surveying methods that produce point clouds are among the newer technologies that make this possible. The interpretation of the point clouds and translation of them into a computer graphics three-dimensional model can be subject to various mediation processes. This paper reports on a translation environment that interprets the point clouds so as to not just replicate the physical world, but rather encapsulates it towards the refinement and realization of geometry design objectives. A case study of Fountains Abbey, a Cistercian Abbey in the United Kingdom, serves as the basis for experimentation and control of surface geometry.

summary This paper reports on the use of animation to enhance the observable range of choices in parametric rapid prototyping. Animation extends parametric rapid prototyping in three ways. First, it is used to reveal dynamically a set of possible forms from which to pick out one that may best serve a particular design project. That is, by animating the parameters that drive the geometrical model, we can visualize the continuum of alternatives that lie between specific key-framed settings of an architectural form. Second, animation can be used to pre-visualize a series of geometrical constructions for transforming a relatively raw three-dimensional form into one that satisfies the demands of a completed architectural project. Third, animation can be used to pre-visualize transformations of a given structure based on parameters set to adapt to varied conditions. In each case study, physical models were assembled through CNC fabrication.

summary While learning computer-aided modeling techniques, students of architecture should not only gain knowledge on how to model three-dimensional forms, but also how to define and understand the information beneath the shapes. Architectural presentation as an intellectual communication-focused process requires new media to channel information in a contemporary way. These can be text, image, sound, video or a digital model. The integration of augmented reality in teaching computer-aided modeling in architecture school provides more thorough learning experience as it opens new opportunities. The authors present the process of implementing AR technology in architectural education - its theoretical background, the outcome of students' work and technical solutions. They argue that the use of AR interface increases the effectiveness of user-model interaction in comparison to standard mouse-based techniques of three-dimensional manipulation due to the intuitive touch-screen interaction and direct control on the camera.

summary The propose paper presents an ongoing research which main goal is to use cork in a customized modular façade system. Cork is used due to its ecological value, renewable characteristic, insulation properties and aesthetic value. The modular system design is bio-inspired in the microscopic cork pattern and the study aims at reproducing in the façade some of the natural characteristics that enable cork to be suitable for the function it plays in construction. Façades are design by a generative design process based on a parametric shape grammar which encodes shape rules and an algorithm to guide the generation. The developed cork modules are part of a back-ventilated façade system which is assembled upon a substructure that reproduces the cork cell structure and enables both the assemblage of the modules to the support wall and the connection between them.

summary Thermal comfort research has shown that natural ventilation can reduce energy consumption while increasing comfort. However, giving occupants control over their environment introduces uncertainty into building performance which is challenging to emulate using current simulation techniques. Traditionally, window operation is modelled deterministically, for instance by assuming windows to be opened at a predefined temperature. Studies have shown this to be inaccurate, often causing large discrepancies between simulated and actual performance; instead, probabilistic models have emerged based on field study data. The literature on this topic is currently limited to building science and lacks an analysis of how these insights may affect architecture. In a design study, we used evolutionary computation to determine comfort-optimized housing designs for various climates, each time comparing the results of both window operation models. The resulting designs varied considerably; most notably, using the stochastic approach resulted in more shading elements, especially in warmer climates.

title An industry case study using parametric modelling to facilitate Passive House design

summary A Passive House’s airtight, well-insulated building envelope can lower operating energy use but also increase the possibility of overheating during the summer. The Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) Excel modelling tool for Passive Houses treats the entire structure as a single thermal zone; this simplification may be in part to blame for the instrument’s poor capacity to forecast the risk of overheating. The current study offers new information on two subjects. First, we compare PHPP’s overheating evaluation method to that of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers’ (CIBSE) ‘TM59’ standard, which involves conducting dynamic energy modelling at the room level. Our results support the idea that PHPP underestimates overheating. In the analysed case, glazing solar heat gain coefficient, and air change rate were some of the most crucial factors affecting compliance. Second, we highlight the usefulness of parametric design for compliance.

summary There is a lack of impactful tools or guidance for assessing water consumption or where there can be considerable savings from water capture. While there are many online calculators, spreadsheets, and models for considering predicted building water use, none of them introduce learning through motivation in the process. Gamification has been recognized in the literature to support motivation using design elements to promote behavior change and performance to a specific activity. The authors propose the use of simple design elements within an modified building performance methodology that can drive awareness and inform the decision-making process relative to the program.
