title Dynamical structural modeling A collaborative design exploration

summary This study is based on a generative performative modeling approach that engages architects and structural engineers in close dialogue. We focus on knowledge shared between engineers and architects to apply the Finite Element Analysis based structural design technique Evolutionary Structural Optimization [ESO] as a way to understand or corroborate the performance factors that are significant in determining architectural form. ESO is very close conceptually to the dynamical system of matter and forces of growth itself. It has parallels both mathematical and metaphorical with natural evolution and morphogenesis so it has been poignant to apply the approach to a formal architectural case study in which the generative influence of these processes is inherent.

summary This paper outlines a particular component of very well known project: Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Família Basilica in Barcelona (1882– on-going but scheduled for completion in 2026). At the time of writing the realisation of the project has proceeded for 87 years since Gaudí's death (1852-1926). As a building site it has been a living laboratory for the nexus between traditional construction offsite manufacturing and digital fabrication since the computers were first introduced to the project:CAD in 1989 closely followed by CAAD two years later. More remarkably CAD/CAM commenced its significant influence in 1991 with the take-up of sem robotised stone cutting and carving. The subject of this paper is an elevated auditorium space that is one of the relatively few ‘sketchy’ areas that Gaudí bequeathed the successors for the design of his magnum opus.

summary In relation to cities, wind is one of the less studied meteorological parameter. Constant vertical rate variations from meso scale to micro scale, altogether with strenght, direction, velocity of the urban canyon, makes the wind a complex subject of study. To achieve this, a methodological strategy that addresses the wind's multi dimensionality was raised. It was aplied to Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in the world, where most of the time winds come 90% from the same direction with speeds reaching 128 km/h. Wind's constant directional behavior allows the recognition of areodynamic phenomena produced, in the first instance, for the wind profiles influenced by the urban rugosity and then, at morphologycal level, the aerodynamic behavior of the layered fluids over the building bodies, generating a regular pattern between solids and fluids. The strong winds in cities with cold climate influence the use of public spaces, which, not being designed under this conditions, do not develop proper levels of thermal comfort.

summary Numerically controlled digital fabrication (NC) encompasses precise toolpaths generated according to the predefined geometry, material characteristics, type of machining processes, and processing tools. This includes a definition of tolerances, necessary for a successful and smooth assembly process when dealing with component-driven assembly after the components were fabricated. However, the prototyping and assembly practice often encounters a variety of issues in real fabrication and assembly scenarios: humidity of the environment, specific material properties, such as the ability of the stock material to change its dimensions according to the unexpected environmental conditions, unexpected different dimensions of the stock material delivered from a factory or a producer, variety of fabrication producers with different machine types, or unique conditions of a production machine. Therefore, there is a need to adapt the geometry of components to different humidity scenarios and combinations of stock material properties or specific machine or production-related processes, which influence the dimensions, and the tolerances embedded into the process of toolpath generation. To address these, we introduce an adaptive parametric model. This has been created as an open-source and open-access algorithm within the Grasshopper environment to easily modify the dimensions of tolerances according to specific and unexpected conditions. The paper also elaborates on and discusses the limitations of such an approach and the scalability and extendibility of the proposed tolerance engine.

summary This research explores the constructive and expressive capabilities of stigmergic-based creasing patterns integrating structural and ornamental conditions in fibre-composite surface tectonics, generated by the reciprocal influence of multi-agent systems and Non- Linear Time History (NLHT) dynamic structural simulation. Building upon precedents on the use of agent bodies and behavioural tectonics such as the work of Roland Snooks, our approach employs NLTH simulation for the dynamical assessment of the structural failure modes to provide information for agents behaviour and a comparative assessment of the bodies pattern contribution. Considering the obtained results, insights gained on the structural behaviour of multi-agent composite surface tectonics while attempting to explore its embedded architectural, morphological and expressive qualities are discussed.

summary Through 3D printing of a mixture of clay and natural fibres, this paper proposes a first design experimentation to understand the parameters that influence mycelium materials' growth, including inoculation (IS) and fabrication strategies (FS). Given the broad spectrum of complex, interrelated variables, the aim is to provide insight based on many empirical experiments and visual inspection through a series of prototypes. The growth behaviour of mycelium and the visual inspection highlight that the inoculation strategy with a post-inoculation of mycelium in the substrate is the one that assures maximal mycelium colonization. Through empirical testing, we demonstrated control over the growth process by guiding the manual insertion of mycelium spawn with undulated areas on the printed surface generated through an image sampling algorithm. Moreover, such a strategy is viable for future programmed growth artefacts once the interactive insertion of mycelium spawn is substituted with a multi-material technique allowing for controlled growth in selective areas induced by the fabrication technique. In terms of resource optimization, the FS that optimizes the use of the material is the most favourable since it was possible to obtain the same final colonized geometry with less material.

summary The integration of Robot Operating System (ROS) with Human-Machine Collaboration (HMC) currently represents the future tendency toward Autonomous Robotic In-Situ Assembly on Construction Sites. In comparison with the industrial environment, construction sites nowadays are extremely complex and unpredictable, due to the different building components and customized design.This paper presents a visual-based object recognition method and user interface enabling on-site robot arms to autonomously handle building components, to build specific designs without the influence of material, shape, and environment. The implementation is an object recognition approach that serves with KUKA industrial robotic manipulator along with an RGB-depth stereo camera in an eye-in-hand configuration to grasp and manipulate found elements to build the desired structure. Opportunities for using vision-based autonomous robotic in-situ assembly on construction sites are reviewed.

summary One of the research ways carried out in the ARIAM-LAREA laboratory aims at giving to architects computing tools for early evaluation of structures. A particular approach uses dimensional analysis and similitude properties in order to define parameter variation laws. Such laws are illustrated by analytical cases using the theory of strength of materials. For complex structures, a heuristic is proposed to give indications of parameter variation influence on mechanical behavior. Some applications are presented for early determination of structural size and limit values, using computations by finite element method.

summary Clash Detection refers to the identification of geometrical overlaps within a Building Information Model (BIM). This paper seeks to extend the notion of overlapping to activities: Given a construction site within a building, we seek to find clashes between construction activities and occupant routines. Such a situation is often encountered in the context of refurbishments of complex buildings operating 24/7 (e.g. airports, train stations, hospitals, prisons). By finding the influence radii of adverse effects resulting from construction - i.e. dust, noise and vibrations, functions may be temporarily relocated in order to guarantee uninterrupted operation. Our tool CONVIS implements these simulation and scheduling aspects and seeks to provide a digital project plan for refurbishments in the said context.

summary This paper presents the impacts of different street orientations and street zones of a typical Dutch residential area on micro-scale human thermal comfort. The spatial and temporal variation of mean radiant temperature (T mrt ) of a typical summer day in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, is simulated by using an established long- and short-wave 3D radiation fluxes model (SOLWEIG). This model calculates human radiation load and expresses this as a T mrt . Hereby we simulate and analyse the T mrt variations for three zones of a street consisting of a centre area for cars and the adjacent pedestrian zones for pedestrians and bicycles. The streets are azimuth rotated. The simulation and analysis results show various T mrt patterns of the three zones in the different orientations at different periods during daytime. We show that the spatial distribution of T mrt at street level strongly depends on street orientation and street zone. This is crucial since optimizing street configuration will directly influence the human thermal comfort in relation to street orientation and street zone. Finally we present a time adjusted framework of thermal comfort and classify the various T mrt for each zone and orientation.

summary Crowd behaviour in traffic and emergency situations has been recorded and documented since the early 1990s, often using digital representations of balls as an indicator of mass and movement. This paper reports the investigation of the factors that influence human movement in urban spaces and visualises the impact on human movements of changes to an urban design space. Using an agent-oriented approach is the common method for investigating the simulation of crowd behaviour. The relation of grammatical design to crowd behaviour is proposed as an important research area. This area developed since the technology for the advanced design visualisation of avatars or animated characters became available. The authors of the software used in Lord of the Rings and other well-known crowd movies have contributed to knowledge of the key issues in crowd behaviour in particular contexts and general situations. This paper relates experiments in teaching grammatical approaches to architectural design with digital media as a tool with three different implementations: a café, restaurant and gallery. Using a variety of design visualisation techniques gives different understandings of the use of a design space. By representing human movement in a design space in more complex visualisations we see more alternatives for better design more readily. Using notions of grammar, contingency and play to explore simple changes in design, the resulting crowd animations present an insightful early research stage experiment with the theories and models of crowd behaviour.

summary To investigate the influence of the spatial geometric parameters of glazed-atrium on building energy consumption, this study established a prototypical office building model in the hot summer-warm winter region in China, and simulated the effect of energy consumption of six selected factors based on orthogonal experimental design (OED). Through the statistical analysis, the results showed that the floor height and the skylight-roof ratio were the most important parameters affecting the total energy consumption, with the contribution rates of 55.5% and 18.2%, followed by the section shape parameter and the plane orientation. In addition, the floor height and the section shape parameter were closely related to the cooling load and the lighting load, respectively, and both energy consumption could be reduced to a lower degree when the atrium inner interface window-wall ratio was 60%. Finally, the optimized parameter combination and energy-saving design strategies were proposed. This study provides architects with a simplified energy evaluation of atrium spatial geometric parameters in the early design stage, and it has an important guiding significance for the sustainable development of office buildings in the future.

summary Digital Design is not only the title of the 21st eCAADe conference 2003 in Graz but also one of the main keywords in Architectural Education nowadays. Information Technology has managed to influence all fields of the “architectural process” and has developed straight from the calculation tools of the engineers over the CAD drafting boards of big architectural firms to every architectural professional and student. This process was incredibly quick in terms of the architectural chronology but very slow in terms of architectural education at universities (at least in Austria). Not very long ago it was sometimes forbidden to deliver CAD drawings for design projects at our faculty. In fact, the early experiments in using the computer in the design process quite often failed because of the restrictions of the available (and affordable) hard-and software. Today, even our first year students start some of their earliest design experiences quite naturally with the computer. However, there are still many questions to be answered and maybe some new questions to be asked in the relationship between architectural design and the computer. Architectural design is mainly a “game of imagination” and today computer tools start to enhance and support the architects visions after a longer period where they were often reduced by the limitations of the tools. Still, there are many different ways to design because every designer has a different approach towards architectural design and there is no such thing as “the perfect digital design tool” for everyone. We hope that this conference with all the different approaches documented in this book plays a major role in the discussion and development of all these aspects and brings us “one step further”.

summary The project’s objective is to study spatial-structural design processes and to support the involved actors; to that end a computational tool so-called Research Engine (RE) has been developed. The RE seeks to fulfill four aims: (1) to study the influence of transformations methods on design instances; (2) to study the influence of transformations methods on the behavior of other transformations methods; (3) to aid in finding “best compromised” or interesting spatial and structural design instances; and (4) to serve as design support tool, providing useful information in early stages of the design process. The paper describes the RE framework and its implementation. Case-studies are presented which showcase the RE’s capabilities and demonstrate that it does fulfill the previously stated aims.

As will be shown, two broad applications seem to have a particularly robust potential for musical expression. The firstinvolves the use of non-linear dynamics to structure large-scale formal development, while the second directly effects local sound production and gesture. A short discussion defining nonlinear phenomena will lead to creative applications found within the following compositions: MAMRE, for solo violin; CANTOR’S DUST, for voice and electronics; DIVERGENCE, for voices and electronics; ANAPHORA, for solo voice, and; STRINGQUARTET #1. In this paper, the influence of nonlinear dynamics and the scaling of multidimensional parameter spaces will be presented as generating principles for musical composition. summary This study aims at identifying the determinant factors that form the condition of urbanity in urban space. A set of urbanistic attributes, based on sampled parcels of the urban network, is used for a quanti-qualitative analysis. Calculations based on these attributes are used to identify the indicators that express the performative qualities of the place, thus allowing the evaluation of the correlation between the typological characteristics of form and the qualitative expression of the urban space. This methodology points to the attributes of the urban form that are most strongly related to the concept of urbanity and that positively influence the quality of urban spaces in the Brazilian context. Finally, we compare our observation with those available in the European literature, already well established in these matters.
