title Interactive Design Exploration with Alt.Text

summary It is well accepted that search is an effective model for design. Newell and Simons’ Human Information Processing model is foundational to this view. Designers use symbols and structures to express, store, off-load, recall, and manage their work. They mix general and detailed elements, organize their problem-space differently, seek ways to identify repetitive tasks, and utilize external media. An integral aspect of design-search is the comparison of alternatives, because the goal is usually to come close, if not fully satisfy, a set of requirements. Searching problem-spaces with currently available tools is challenging due to a number of issues related to creating and comparing alternative representations of one’s thought process and outcome. In this paper, we present Alt.Text, a prototype that we developed to explore strategies for supporting design search. While Alt.Text only handles text-based documents, we believe that many of its features can be generalized to the domain of architectural design.

summary Responses delivered by a generative synthesis system (GSS) vary between creative solutions and unusable outcomes. The type of GSS response is driven by many factors such as: the design context, designer’s interpretation, implementation environments, design language, and the GSS composition, among many factors. In this paper, we describe a GSS framework to provide a recipe for delivering responses, which can be qualified as solutions. The framework focuses on GSS composition. It includes descriptions for: building blocks, components, and building strategy. The framework is informed by generative design literature and by our experimentation. We present the framework through: a brief background to GSS, metrics, building blocks, components, and building strategy. We also show an example of GSS implementation and offer a brief discussion.

summary The introduction of Rapid Prototyping technology such as 3D printers and diverse Numerically Controlled machines such as laser cutters and milling machines, has made it obvious for many educational institutions, that a paradigm shift is occurring these years, that will forever change the design- and architectural practice, - for better or worse. This paper discusses the current change of role and status of the representation as a means to communicate design in the digital era. It outlines two opposite directions for the development of software technology, and brings forward previous and current research, on the didactic aspects of introducing digital software into the curriculum of architecture and design education. The paper describes a workshop held at the Danish Design School, where students proficient in using digital media, were challenged to use analogue models instead, to rediscover and utilize some of the creative potentials offered by this medium. Two other workshops discussing similar themes with different foci and different participants have been held since. One hosted by the Glass & Ceramic School on Bornholm, where the students are trained as traditional Craftsmen and another hosted by Nordes2009 at AHO in Oslo, where the participants came with a background in the research community. My own research interest lies in establishing or refueling a discussion on the importance of the ambiguity in a physical representation, as opposed to the finite interpretations offered by the digital modeling environment, that the profession is accustomed to work within. This interest has recently been confirmed and renewed by reading “The (soft) Architecture Machine(s)” from 1970+75 and by studying the works of Professor Julio Bermudez and Professor Bennett Neiman.

summary The 21st century brings changes and challenges that impact the economy, society, as well as built and natural environments. Knowledge is seen as an opportunity and a driving force in the global market. Thus, cities invest in innovation and human capital, by increasing the quality of place and urban vitality, which are essential to attract and retain talent and businesses. In this context, innovation districts emerge under the paradigms of Knowledge-based Urban Development and the quintuple helix innovation model. However, the literature still lacks indicators to measure urban vitality for planning these spaces. This work aims to systematically structure the knowledge on urban vitality and its indicators to support the planning of vibrant innovation territories, and to explore the potential to integrate these indicators into city information models (CIM).

summary Based on the concepts of Sustainable Urbanism and performance-based design, this work proposes the development of a neighborhood in the city of Sao José dos Campos (SJC), Sao Paulo-Brazil. The performance-based design method was used through parametric algorithmic tools - such as Grasshopper - for construction, analysis and the urban design multicriteria optimization. Five optimization functions were used: walkability, sunset view, radiation in hot periods, minimum hours of sun exposition and maximum number of floors. The use of optimization software accommodates the numerous conflicting requirements of the model. The results obtained are a systematization of the process and a system that allows various urban solutions based on numerical performance criteria. The selected solutions achieved walkability indicators greater than 80%.

summary We present an Environmental Analysis and Safety Advisor system capable of identify the environmental barriers and hazards found in the homes of elderly people. This augmented reality tool runs on a portable computing device and can be used by informal and formal caregivers without specific knowledge of Accessible Design, to evaluate the safeness of an elderly home environment, ensuring that potential fall hazards are detected and corrected. The system recognizes specific indoor elements of the house (e.g. arm-chair, bed, chair), and then computes and analyses their mutual distances in the environment so that a warning of hazard is emitted in case of need (e.g. loose cable, not enough space to pass a wheelchair). In this context, we implemented object recognition at the category level of miniature versions of real sized furniture and the determination of the distance between neighboring objects, signaling if it is below a certain threshold value. Environmental Analysis tool can then recognize furniture and measure the distance between two furniture elements enabling the system to pop up an alert sign if the space left does not guarantee good accessibility.

summary In this paper we use analysis tools from Space Syntax and objective observation of the human behaviour, to understand the impact of landmarks in the walking patterns of users of spaces. Our case study was a large exterior public open space (University Campus), in which participants could walk freely and simultaneously be tracked by several sensors. We carried Space Syntax analysis for this space, and then collected Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking information and used a mobile eye-tracking device to acquire eye gaze information. The collected data allowed us to map and analyse each subject behaviour in the public space. A more specific analysis was done to four selected landmarks that, according to the Space Syntax analysis, were the ones with higher integration values. Results indicate that landmarks with such higher integration values show also a larger count of fixations and saccades of gaze interaction.

title Displacement feature modelling for conceptual design

summary Although the support of surface features, where a surface feature represents a local geometric detail imposed on a surface, is well-defined on prismatic objects, this is notthe case for sculptured surface models. Current methods often lead to data-explosion, high polynomial results, or procedural solutions. In this paper a method isdescribed that allows explicit modelling of protrusions and depressions in free-form B-spline surfaces. As this functionality is intended to be used by industrial designersduring conceptual design, distinct requirements are formulated to allow its use in this early stage of design. A method is described that calculates a blending geometryapproximating G1 cross-boundary smoothness effectively. Using these requirements and approximations, protrusions and depressions can be modelled with real-timeresponse, and with unprecedented flexibility.

summary Within the field of digitally fabricated housing, the paper outlines a theoretical model for a housing system that combines complete off-site prefabrication with parametric assemblies. The paper then presents some insights on the application of snap-fit joints to the wall assemblies entirely fabricated using agricultural residue panels. Mechanical characterization of the material was performed through axial tension, compression and 4-point bending tests. Guidelines of plastics snap-fit design were applied to the joint design within the elastic limits of the material. Three different full scale wall typology prototypes were built using this jointing technique. The results show that while snap-fits can be a promising solution encouraging self-build in low-cost housing, the brittle nature of the specific agricultural residue panel material necessitates further joint enhancements.

summary This paper introduces new supporting tools in the field of distant collaborative design, namely DCDS and CRTI-weB. These prototypes respectively support: the early stages of design, through the support of the crucial initial step of free-hand sketches shared in real-time, and the asynchronous collaborative activities. The main goal of this paper is to propose the use of these innovative tools as an efficient and realistic way of managing long distance collaboration, to effectively serve the designers’ needs. This proposition is analyzed and addressed through a real-size experiment featuring 30 architecture and architectural-engineering students, working together in real-time at different locations (Belgium and France). This experiment and the necessary survey open up interesting fields of investigation, such as the relevance of the proposed services in supporting distant collaborative design in architecture and the benefit this represents for students to merge the IT aspects and the design studio. The methodology and the replicability are analyzed to increase the level and quality of formation of our students and, finally, a criticism of the tools confirms a benefit for the developing teams.

summary With rapid urbanization, the necessity for sustainable development has skyrocketed, and sustainable urban development is a must. Recent advances in computing performance of urban layouts in real-time allow for new paradigms of performance-driven design. As beneficial as utilizing multiple layers of urban data may be, it can also create a challenge in interpreting and operationalizing data. This paper presents an integrated computational framework to measure sustainability, operationalize and interpret the urban forms performance data using generative design methods, novel performance simulations, and machine learning predictions. The performance data is clustered into three pillars of sustainability: social, environmental, and economical, and it is followed with the performance space exploration, which assists in extracting knowledge and actionable rules of thumb. A significant advantage of the framework is that it can be used as a discussion table in participatory planning processes since it could be easily adapted to interactive environments.

Using a wearablecomputer, design and construction personnel can nowexchange design information quickly and continuouslybetween the point of work on the construction siteand the remote design office. The improved iterationbetween design and construction and much strongerconnection between design personnel andconstruction site afforded by wearable computers maypoint the way to a new kind of integratedarchitectural process. In this study, the goal was todetermine the value of wearable computers inintegrating design and construction by measuringspecific performance characteristics.The resultsinclude findings on productivity, rework andcommunication quality. They reveal that wearablecomputers can improve communication quality andreduce rework, but may have an initially negativeimpact on productivity. These findings suggest thatwearable computers may play a key role in futurebuilding projects, helping to bridge the current dividebetween design and construction.

summary Biomimicry, where nature is emulated as a basis for design, is a growing area of research in the fields of architecture and engineering. The widespread and practical application of biomimicry as a design approach remains however largely unrealized. A growing body of international research identifies various obstacles to the employment of biomimicry as an architectural design method. One barrier of particular note is the lack of a clear definition and methodology of the various approaches to biomimicry that designers can initially employ. This paper attempts to link biological principles with computational design in order to present a design methodology that aids interested architects within the preliminary design phase.

title Disregarded solution spaces: A proposed approach to draw connections between computationally generated solution spaces and actual built case studies

summary Many computational studies generate an array of solutions for a design problem paired with their structural or daylighting performance. An enormous investment of effort and computational time is required to create these simulation-based datasets. However, the generated data is usually bound to the specific case studies they were created to explore. Can this data be useful for application to other design cases? This study employed a generative algorithm to fill a database with perforated shell structures covering a courtyard. A shell by Heinz Isler was chosen to be mapped onto the generated solution space based on its performance. The study found that this method is effective for predicting daylight performance, while structural performance modifications can be a source of inspiration for designing other structural forms.

summary Digital networks are gaining importance as environments for learning and creative collaboration. Technical achievements, software enhancements, and a growing number of applicable principles make it possible to compile complex environments that satisfy many aspects necessary for creative collaboration. This paper focuses on three issues: the architecture of collaborative environments, communication in these environments and the processes inherent to creative collaboration. The information architecture of digital environments looks different from physical architecture, mainly because the material that it is made out of is information and not stone, wood or metal and the goal is to provide appropriate paths and views to information. Nonetheless, many analogies can be drawn between information architecture and physical architecture, including the need for useability, aesthetics, and consistency. To communicate is important for creative collaboration. Digital networks request and enable new strategies for communicating. Regarding the collaborative creative process we have been able to detect principles and features that enhance this process, but there are still many unanswered questions. For example, the environment can enable and improve the frequency of surprise and coincidence, two factors that often play decisive roles in the creative processes but cannot be planned for in advance. Freedom and transparency within the environment are other important factors that foster creative collaboration. The following findings are based on numerous courses, which we have taught using networked environments and some associated, research projects that helped to verify their applicability for architectural practice.
