summary Reciprocal Frame Structures (RF) have broad application potentials. Flexible to using small available materials, they span large areas, including varied curvature and doubly-curved forms. Although not many buildings using RF have been constructed to date, records indicate RF efficiencies where timber was widely used in structures predating modern construction. For reasons of adaptability and economy, advances in computation and fabrication precipitated increase in research into RF structures as a contemporary architectural typology. One can observe that linear timber such as rods and bars feature in extensive RF research. However, interest in planar RF has only recently emerged in research. Hence one can argue that planar RF provides depth to explore new design possibilities. This paper contributes to the growing knowledge of planar RF by presenting a design project that demonstrates an approach in notching systems to explore design and structural performance. The design project, the developed design workflow, fabrication, assembly and evaluation are discussed in this paper.

summary The paper introduces the methodology related to the topic of citizen-driven urban design and revises the idea of on-site participation of end-users, which could prospectively lead to customisation of architectural and urban space in a full-scale. The research in the first phase addresses the engagement of information technologies used for idea sketching in participatory design workshop related to local urban issues in the city of Chur in Switzerland by means of the Skity tool, the sketching on-line platform running on all devices. Skity allows user, which can be individual citizens or a community, to sketch, build, and adapt their ideas for the improvement of an urban locality. The participant is the expert of the locality because he or she lives in this place every day. The content of this paper is focused on the participatory design research project conducted as a study at the ETH Zürich and the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft HTW in Chur in collaboration with Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore, mainly concentrated on the first step of the methodological approach introduced here.

summary This project explores the advantages of employing continuum material topology optimization in a 3D non-standard lattice structure through fiber additive manufacturing processes (Figure 1). Additive manufacturing (AM) has gained rapid adoption in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). However, existing optimization techniques often overlook the mechanical anisotropy of AM processes, resulting in suboptimal structural properties, with a focus on layer-by-layer or planar processes. Materials, processes, and techniques considering anisotropy behavior (Kwon et al. 2018) could enhance structural performance (Xie 2022). Research on 3D printing materials with high anisotropy is limited (Eichenhofer et al. 2017), but it holds potential benefits (Liu et al. 2018). Spatial lattices, such as space frames, maximize structural efficiency by enhancing flexural rigidity and load-bearing capacity using minimal material (Woods et al. 2016). From a structural design perspective, specific non-standard lattice geometries offer great potential for reducing material usage, leading to lightweight load-bearing structures (Shelton 2017). The flexibility and freedom of shape inherent to AM offers the possibility to create aggregated continuous truss-like elements with custom topologies.

title By Any Means Necessary: Digitally Fabricating Architecture at Scale

summary Architectural manufacturing is a balancing act between production facility and a custom fabrication shop. Each project Zahner takes on is different from the last, and not likely to repeat. This means that workflows are designed and deployed for each project individually. We present Flash Manufacturing, a fabrication methodology we employ in the production of architectural elements for cutting-edge and computationally sophisticated buildings. By remixing manufacturing techniques and production spaces we are able to meet the novel challenges posed by fabricating and assembling hundreds of thousands of unique parts. We discuss methods for producing vastly different project types and highlight two building case studies: the Cornell Tech Bloomberg Center and the Petersen Automotive Museum. With this work, we demonstrate how design creativity is no longer at odds with reliable and cost-effective building practices. Zahner has produced hundreds of seminal buildings working with architects such as: Gehry Partners, Zaha Hadid, m0rphosis, Herzog & de Meuron, OMA, Steven Holl Architects, Studio Daniel Libeskind, Rafael Moneo, DS+R, Foster + Partners, Gensler, KPF, SANAA and many more. This paper disrupts conventional discourse surrounding manufacturing/construction methods by discussing the realities of mass customization—how glossy architectural products are forged through ad hoc inventive engineering and risk tolerance.

summary The paper discusses 23 interviewed architects in practice about the role of traditional and digital sketching (human-computer interaction) in communication with the client. They were selected from 1995 to 2018 (the interval of graduation) from three different countries: the Czech Republic (CR), Slovakia (SR), Netherland (NR). To realize three blending areas that impact the approach to sketching: (I) Traditional hand and physical model studies (1995-2003). (II)Transition form - designing by hand and PC (2004–2017). (III) Mainly digital and remote forms of designing (2018–now). Interviews helped transform 31 “parameters of tools use” from the previous theoretical framework narrowed down into six main areas: (1) Implementation; (2)Affordability; (3)Timesaving; (4) Drawing support; (5) Representativeness; (6) Transportability. Paper discusses findings from interviewees: (A) Implementation issues are above time and price. (B) Strongly different understanding of what digital sketching is. From drawing in Google Slides by mouse to sketching in Metaverse. (C) Substantial reduction of traditional sketching (down to a total of 3% of the time) at the expense of growing responsibilities. (D) 80% of respondents do not recommend sketching in front of the client. Also, other interesting findings are further described in the discussion.

summary This paper presents the research development for a base structural module for the Casa Nordeste project. Casa Nordeste is a compact housing experiment that will participate in the Solar Decathlon Latin America competition. It consists of a modular building that houses living, cooking, and sanitizing space. Developments presented are based on digital design and fabrication principles and processes, through algorithms that allow its customization. In this sense, discussions begin with a brief theoretical discussion about the concepts that underline the project: evolutionary housing; digital technologies that improve design and construction; open source construction and generative design systems. The paper finalizes by presenting and discussing developments of three different design aspects of the structural module: (a) geometry of the frames, (b) its modulation, and (c) fittings and joining mechanisms.

summary Architecture is a discipline with a long history of engagement with representational techniques borrowed from artforms such as painting and drawing. Historically, these techniques enable artists to translate three-dimensional space into a two-dimensional medium, while architecture tends to work in reverse, using the latter to express yet-to-be-realized projects in the former. This investigation leads to specific methods of linear perspectival representation that manipulate our perception of spatial depth, such as trompe l’oeil and anamorphic projection. Referencing these methods, we introduce the concept of an optically illusive architecture. While referencing a wide range of visually deceptive effects, we focus on synthesizing two-dimensional patterns into three-dimensional objects for the purpose of producing a depthless reading of three-dimensional space. In this paper, we outline optically illusive architecture and look at the initial stages of a design experiment that attempts to bring the perception of flatness into a three-dimensional object. This is achieved by building a simple algorithm that reverses linear perspectival projection to produce two-dimensional effects through a three-dimensional physical object. We analyze the results by comparing the two- and three-dimensional projections against one another from varying points of view in space, and speculate on the possible applications for such a design.

summary Built on a Situated Computations framework, this project explores preservation, reconfiguration, and presentation of heritage through immersive virtual experiences, and machine learning for new understandings and possibilities (Noel 2020; 2017; Leach and Campo 2022; Leach 2021). Using the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival - hereinafter referred to as Carnival - as a case study, Carnival + AI is a series of immersive experiences in design, culture, and artificial intelligence (AI). These virtual spaces create new digital modes of engaging with cultural heritage and reimagined designs of traditional sculptures in the Carnival (Noel 2021). The project includes three virtual events that draw on real events in the Carnival: (1) the Virtual Gallery, which builds on dancing sculptures in the Carnival and showcases AI-generated designs; (2) Virtual J’ouvert built on J’ouvert in Carnival with AI-generated J’ouvert characters specific; and (3) Virtual Mas which builds on the masquerade.

summary Since the advent of industrialized processes in modern construction industries, the development of and relationship between computer-aided tools of design and computer-controlled tools of fabrication has steadily yielded new and innovative construction methodologies. Whilst industry has adopted many of these innovations for use by highly efficient machines and flexible processes, their operation is often highly dependent on industrial scales of production, and thus often inaccessible for small-scale, bespoke and affordable application. The prototype integrated joint milling methodology, case study and open-source software plugin ‘Dove’ presented in this paper, explores the efficacy of algorithmic processes in dynamically generating complex tooling paths and machine code for fabrication of bespoke dovetail and finger joints on a 6-axis industrial robot. The versatility, speed and precision of 6-axis robotic milling, allows us to liberate the efficiency, integrity and aesthetic of the dovetail and finger joint types from traditional application, and apply them to new architectures involving mass-customisation, complex form, and diverse materialities. In the development of full-immersion milling toolpaths and back-face filleting techniques that drastically reduce cutting times, tool path complexity and material waste, this study seeks to build upon past and current research by proposing a comparatively simple, efficient and more intuitive approach to robotically-fabricated integrated jointing for application at a variety of scales.

This project proposes functional approaches capable of detecting visual elements in the environment that favor the construction of mathematical forms. summary Urban dashboards visualize information about the measured performance, structure, patterns and trends of cities. This paper introduces a concept of urban dashboard as a platform for participation, research, and service development. We present and reflect the development process of the City Monitor, which is a test version of an urban dashboard for the pilot cities participating in the SenCity project. The paper describes and reflects on the concept, structure, and content of the City Monitor and its participatory and iterative development process, through a case study. The case study encompasses a pilot implementation of the dashboard concept in a context of a housing area in the Finnish city of Salo, where intelligent roadway lighting was tested.

summary CNC cutting machines have become essential tools for designers and architects enabling rapid prototyping, model-building and production of high quality components. Designers often cut from new materials, discarding the irregularly shaped remains. We introduce ProjecTables, a visual augmented reality system for interactive packing of model parts onto sheet materials. ProjecTables enables designers to (re)use scrap materials for CNC cutting that would have been previously thrown away, at the same time supporting aesthetic choices related to wood grain, avoiding surface blemishes, and other relevant material properties. We conducted evaluations of ProjecTables with design students from Aarhus School of Architecture, demonstrating that participants could quickly and easily place and orient model parts reducing material waste. Contextual interviews and ideation sessions led to a deeper understanding of current work practices and sustainability issues with CNC cutting-machines, and identified useful features for interactive packing to reduce waste while supporting aesthetic concerns for exhibition quality design projects.

summary Previous research projects (Adel, Agustynowicz, and Wehrle 2021; Adel Ahmadian 2020; Craney and Adel 2020; Adel et al. 2018; Apolinarska et al. 2016; Helm et al. 2017; Willmann et al. 2015; Oesterle 2009) have explored the use of comprehensive digital design-to-fabrication workflows for the construction of nonstandard timber structures employing robotic assembly technologies. More recently, the Robotically Fabricated Structure (RFS), a bespoke outdoor timber pavilion, demonstrated the potential for highly articulated timber architecture using short timber elements and human-robot collaborative assembly (HRCA) (Adel 2022). In the developed HRCA process, a human operator and a human fabricator work alongside industrial robotic arms in a shared working environment, enabling collaborative fabrication approaches. Building upon this research, we present an exploration adapting HRCA to nail-laminated timber (NLT) fabrication, demonstrated through a case study exhibition (Figures 1 and 2).

By defining these parameters, it is expected to assist in the automation of the manufacturing process, as well as through a greater degree of personalization to provide a better user experience in the use of these devices, resulting in a better development of the tasks in a daily basis. The process for the development of an orthosis is presented, as well as possibilities for validation and further development.

summary The construction industry faces numerous challenges related to productivity, sustainability, and meeting global demands (Hatoum and Nassereddine 2020; Carra et al. 2018; Barbosa, Woetzel, and Mischke 2017; Bock 2015; Linner 2013). In response, the automation of design and construction has emerged as a promising solution. In the past three decades, researchers and innovators in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) fields have made significant strides in automating various aspects of building construction, utilizing computational design and robotic fabrication processes (Dubor et al. 2019). However, synthesizing innovation in automation encounters several obstacles. First, there is a lack of an established venue for information sharing, making it difficult to build upon the knowledge of peers. First, the absence of a well-established platform for information sharing hinders the ability to effectively capitalize on the knowledge of peers. Consequently, much of the research remains isolated, impeding the rapid dissemination of knowledge within the field (Mahbub 2015). Second, the absence of a standardized and unified process for automating design and construction leads to the individual development of standards, workflows, and terminologies. This lack of standardization presents a significant obstacle to research and learning within the field. Lastly, insufficient training materials hinder the acquisition of skills necessary to effectively utilize automation. Traditional in-person robotics training is resource-intensive, expensive, and designed for specific platforms (Peterson et al. 2021; Thomas 2013).

summary The design process and ordering of individual components through which architecture is realized relies on the use of abstract "models" to represent a proposed design. The emergence and use of these abstract "models" for building representation has a long history and tradition in the field of architecture. Models have been made and continue to be made for the patron, occasionally the public, and as a guide for the builders. Models have also been described as a means to reflect on the design and to allow the design to be in dialogue with the creator.

The term "model" in the above paragraph has been used in various ways and in this context is defined as any representation through which design intent is expressed. This includes accurate/ rational or abstract drawings (2- dimensional and 3-dimensional), physical models (realistic and abstract) and computer models (solid, void and virtual reality). The various models that fall within the categories above have been derived from the need to "view" the proposed design in various ways in order to support intuitive reasoning about the proposal and for evaluation purposes. For example, a 2-dimensional drawing of a floor plan is well suited to support reasoning about spatial relationships and circulation patterns while scaled 3-dimensional models facilitate reasoning about overall form, volume, light, massing etc. However, the common denominator of all architectural design projects (if the intent is to construct them in actual scale, physical form) are the discrete building elements from which the design will be constructed. It is proposed that a single computational model representing individual components supports all of the above "models" and facilitates "viewing"' the design according to the frame of reference of the viewer.

Furthermore, it is the position of the authors that all reasoning stems from this rudimentary level of modeling individual components.

The concept of component representation has been derived from the fact that a "real" building (made from individual components such as nuts, bolts and bar joists) can be "viewed" differently according to the frame of reference of the viewer. Each individual has the ability to infer and abstract from the assemblies of components a variety of different "models" ranging from a visceral, experiential understanding to a very technical, physical understanding. The component concept has already proven to be a valuable tool for reasoning about assemblies, interferences between components, tracing of load path and numerous other component related applications. In order to validate the component-based modeling concept this effort will focus on the development of spatial understanding from the component-based model. The discussions will, therefore, center about the representation of individual components and the development of spatial models and spatial reasoning from the component model. In order to frame the argument that spatial modeling and reasoning can be derived from the component representation, a review of the component-based modeling concept will precede the discussions of spatial issues.

title CAD Technology Transfer: A Case Study

summary Transferring innovative university-based research results to the industry or practice that will ultimately use them is an arduous, time-consuming effort. One way to effect this technology transfer is to develop a demonstrable prototype product and then find or form a corporation that can expand the prototype into a full product and market it to the profession. Another way, which can shorten the transfer process, is to "sell" the idea, rather than the product, to a corporation that has the vision, the resources and the technical competency to support its development, with the intent to eventually market it. In this paper, we describe a case study of this latter approach, based on our seven year experience of researching, developing and transferring innovative architectural CAD technology. We describe the birth, growth, and maturity of Worldview, a computer-aided design and modeling system for use by architects. The project was initiated in 1983, and went through five software versions, numerous grants and grant extensions, two granting corporations, and extensive field testing. The software has developed into a mature system, with sufficient functionality appropriate for commercial distribution. The paper describes not only the factual chronology of the project, but also highlights the advantages and drawbacks of market-oriented university research. We conclude with suggestions as to how the process may be improved, and how problems and obstacles can be minimized.
