summary Polymorphism, the ability of a substance to exist as multiple, different, crystalline solids is a subject of much interest in the fields of chemistry, pharmacy and crystallography. In some cases, polymorphs can be found to interconvert, usually in response to changes in the physical environment such as changes in temperature or pressure. The ability of structures composed of identical building blocks to interconvert is relevant to the field of architecture where architectural artefacts may require to respond to transient demands. Here we describe the phenomenon of polymorphism and the relevance to the architectural field, together with the development of a bespoke software plugin to allow polymorphic crystal structures to be used in design.

summary According to eCAADe's mission, the exchange and collaboration within the area of computer aided architectural design education and research, while respecting the pedagogical approaches in the different schools and countries, can be regarded as a core activity. The current session follows up on the first Contextualised Digital Heritage Workshop (CDHW) held on the occasion of eCAADe 2016 in Oulu (D. di Mascio et.al.) This event was thought to represent the first of a series of future contextualized digital heritage workshops and hence, the name Oulu interchangeable with the name of any other city or place. The second CDHW took place in the framework of CAADRIA 2017 in Suzhou (D. di Mascio & M.A. Schnabel) and focussed on sharing and dissemination of heritage information and personal experiences, such as narratives.The primary objective for the 2018 digital heritage session is to engage participants in an active discussion, not the longer format presentation of prepared positions. The round table itself is limited to short opening statements so as to ensure time is allowed for viewpoints to be exchanged and for the conference attendees to join in on the issues discussed. The panel will review past practices with the potential for guiding future direction.

summary This research explores the use of large-scale 3D Printing techniques in architecture and structural design. First we will analyse the various methods in large-scale 3D printing in order to choose the method with the most potential to be used to build large-scale residential buildings in the Netherlands. Then we will investigate the properties of this 3D printing technique to determine the new building process, related to building with a 3D Concrete Printer. The freedom in movement of the printer and the properties of the concrete mixture used to print will form the guidelines in the creation of a design language in which both material costs and labour costs are reduced to a minimum. The design language is later applied on the design of a house, which shows the impact 3D Concrete Printing should have on the current boundaries in architecture and structural design.

summary The world is experiencing an ever increasing pace of change and yet our design processes typically follow a waterfall model that make can make change and adaptation difficult. Digital design approaches provide an opportunity to develop agile solutions that are more open to change in the design process. This paper proposes the development of immaterial architectures wherein the material expression is left to later in the design process when there is greater certainty. We describe a series of 3 workshops that employ aspects of agile software development methodologies into architecture. The workshops proposed 3 immaterial pavilions for Delft, Adelaide and Tianjin. This first cycle of three workshops resulted in the design, fabrication and installation of the Agile X UniSA Pavilion in Adelaide. This paper discusses the applicability of agile development methodologies to this process and details a series of adaptations to provide a set of appropriate agile development principles for architecture.

summary This paper proposes and examines a new way of cooperation between human workers and machine intelligence in architectural scale construction. For the transfer of construction information between the physical and digital world, mature technologies such as Radio Frequency IDentifier (RFID), and emerging technologies like Augmented Reality (AR) are used in parallel to supplement each other. Dynamic data flow is implemented to synchronize digital and physical models by following the ID signatures of individual building parts. The contributions of this paper includes the demonstration of current technological limitations, and the proposal of a hybrid system between human and computer, which is tested in order to explore the possibilities of digitally enhanced construction methods.

summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary This paper presents the experience of the first phase of remodeling existing historical and colonial district in Bandung, Indonesia, including existing building façade, streetscape and street furniture. Braga Street is chosen as study case because it is a well-known historical street in Bandung with art deco style buildings constructed during Dutch colonial era. By remodeling it, it could help stakeholders to evaluate existing Braga street condition, to test any modification of buildings along the street and to determine specific regulation for the street. In this case, we use Unity3D and Oculus Rift DK2 for remodeling current situation. We gathered feedback from respondents using a questionnaire given after they experienced the model in VR. Many lessons learned from modeling process and respondents' feedback: higher frame rate to make seamless VR experience by having all components on a low poly model and provide smoother movement to prevent visual discomfort. This paper's conclusion gives suggestions for anyone who want to start architecture modeling in virtual reality for the very first time and how to optimize it.

summary Literature suggests that despite the increasing range and variety of computational tools and technologies, they have not really been employed for designing as extensively as it might be. This is due in part to the numerous challenges and impediments limiting their effective usage such as the methodological, procedural, and substantive factors and limitations, and skepticism about their impact of usage on the design process and outcome. The gap in our understanding of how advanced computational tools could support the design activities and design decision-making has expanded considerably to become a new area of inquiry with considerable room for the expansion of knowledge. This research is a single-case study that has been pursued in two phases: literature review and survey followed by analysis and discussion of the empirical results. The empirical observations were compared to the theoretical propositions and with results of similar research to highlight the areas and the extent to what the IT tools' usage have influenced the outcome of the design process. summary This paper presents a method for translating physical interaction with design objects into parametric relationships. A framework of the method is created to automate the generation of parametric equations as modeling constraints. The prototypes developed for this work link digital models with their physical counterparts to create a hybrid and tangible interface that enables user interaction. The prototypes investigate linear and non-linear types of object relationships for creating parametric models. The results demonstrate a novel approach in architectural design that assists users in creating complex geometric relationships through intuitive interaction.

summary Reciprocal Frame Structures (RF) have broad application potentials. Flexible to using small available materials, they span large areas, including varied curvature and doubly-curved forms. Although not many buildings using RF have been constructed to date, records indicate RF efficiencies where timber was widely used in structures predating modern construction. For reasons of adaptability and economy, advances in computation and fabrication precipitated increase in research into RF structures as a contemporary architectural typology. One can observe that linear timber such as rods and bars feature in extensive RF research. However, interest in planar RF has only recently emerged in research. Hence one can argue that planar RF provides depth to explore new design possibilities. This paper contributes to the growing knowledge of planar RF by presenting a design project that demonstrates an approach in notching systems to explore design and structural performance. The design project, the developed design workflow, fabrication, assembly and evaluation are discussed in this paper.

What is more, despite the passing of 57 years of parametric design's existence we still do not know what parametric design is. summary This paper will discuss and investigate the issues with the concept of 'glitch' in architecture. There are currently two definitions that sit in a symbiotic relationship with each other; Moradi's (2004) and Menkman's (2011). This paper will explore the implications of these two approaches, while investigating the possibility of a third, unique definition (the encoded transform), and what effect they have on the possibility for a 'glitch architecture'. The paper will then focus on the glitches' capacity to be disruptive within the design process. In the context of architecture, it has been previously argued that the inclusion of glitches within a design process can easily create a process that does not 'converge' to a desired design outcome, but instead shifts haphazardly within a set of family resemblances (Austin & Perin 2015). Further to this, it will be revealed that this 'divergent' quality of glitches is due to the encoded nature of architectural production.

summary Driven by technology, this multidisciplinary research focuses on the implementation of a photomechanical material into a reactive wearable that aims to protect the body from the ultraviolet radiation deriving from the sun. In this framework, the wearable becomes an active, supplemental skin that not only protects the human body but also augments its functions, such as movement and respiration. The embedded knowledge enables the smart material to sense and exchange data with the environment in order to passively actuate a system that regulates the relation between the body and its surroundings in an attempt to maintain equilibrium. The design strategy is defined by 4 sequential steps: a) The definition of the technical problem, b) the analysis of the human body, c) the design of the reactive material system, as well as d) the digital simulations and the digital fabrication of the system. The aforementioned design strategies allow for accuracy as well as high performance optimization and predictability in such complex design tasks, enabling the creation of customized products, designed for individuals.

summary This paper discusses the methodology and results of the Maslow's Palace workshops project, which engages with current debates surrounding the democratisation of digital urban design technology and stakeholder decision making, through the implementation of a speculative oriented approach to serious gaming. The research explores how serious games might be used to help marginalised communities consider past, future and present community experiences, reconcile dissimilar assumptions, generate social capital building and design responses and prime participants for further long term design engagement processes. Empirical material for this research was gathered from a range of case study workshops prepared with three landfill-based communities and external partners throughout 2017. Results show the approach helped participants develop shared norms, values and understandings of sensitive topics and develop ideas for future action through "collective tinkering".

summary A city, defined as a unity of inhabitants with their environment and showing self-creating and self-maintaining properties, can be considered as an autopoietic system if we take into account its bottom-up processes with unpredictable behaviour of its components. Such a property can lead to self-creation of urban patterns. These processes are studied in well-known vernacular architectures and informal settlements around the world and they are able to adapt according to various conditions and forces. The main research objective is to establish a computational design-modelling framework for modelling autopoietic intricate characteristics of a city based on an adaptability, self-maintenance and self-generation of urban patterns with adequate visual representation.The paper introduces a modelling methodology that allows to combine planning tasks with inhabitants' interaction and data sources by using an interchange framework to model more complex urban dynamics. The research yields preliminary results tested in a simulation model of a redevelopment of Tanjong Pagar Waterfront, the container terminal in the city of Singapore being transformed into a new future centre as a conducted case study.

summary Algorithmic BIM combines BIM and Generative Design (GD), merging the potentialities of both approaches. In this paper we describe the design process of a set of parametric facades developed using Algorithmic-BIM, and how this approach was integrated into the design workflow of two architectural studios. We demonstrate how the integration of GD together with BIM influenced the whole design process and also the selection of the final solution. Some of the limitations found during the entire process are also addressed in the paper, such as tight deadlines and financial constraints. Finally, we explain the pros and cons of using this design method compared to a traditional BIM approach, and we discuss the implementation of this paradigm in a traditional design practice. This work was developed using Rosetta, an IDE for Generative Design that supports scripts using different programming languages and allows the generation and edition of 3D models in a variety of CAD and BIM applications. The result of this work is an information model of three parametric facades for a residential building, from which we can extract material quantities and construction performance tests.

summary This paper investigates through a review of the current literature on smart cities, reflecting different concepts across different political-social contexts, seeking to contribute to the establishment of a critical framework for smart cities development. The present work provides a review of the literature of 250 selected publications from four databases (Scielo, ScienceDirect, worldwide science, and Cumincad), covering the years from 2012 to 2018. Publications were categorised by the following steps: 3RC framework proposed by Kummitha and Crutzen (2017), the main political sectors of city planning, implementation strategies, computational techniques, and organisation rules. The information was analised graphically trying to identify tendencies along the time, and also, seeking to explore future possibilities for implementations in different political-social contexts. As a case of study, Australia and Brazil were compared using the proposed framework.
