title Teaching 3D Software in a big class: the Method and the statistical analysis in 3D education

summary This paper introduces an experimental course to teach 3D software for more than 200 students at the same time in a semester, and discusses about the quality of results and the statistical analysis. The results are shown as the 3D rendered images made by the students in the general education course. Based on the statistical data from the course, the correlations between the score of students and several factors, such as, access number to online discussion board, gender, software-purchased, degree program, etc. are analyzed.

title Implementations and Applications of DesignMap: Case Studies to Manage an Online Database of Visual Designs

summary This research introduces state-of-the-art techniques in the areas of online libraries, communities, and forums. The research endeavours to describe a computer system called DesignMap that could be categorized as a visual design forum. This system encourages networking and can also be applied as a visual design library. The DesignMap system, which manages and displays a massive number of visual designs in two and three dimensions, was presented and discussed in a previous research. This project, however, is concerned with the application of DesignMap as a tool to search, visualize, modify, and then add designs in a map; these designs are classified based on their formal properties of object relationships. DesignMap users have access to any part or category in the map. The resulting design series created by users of this system present a new and unique form of design collaboration. The research also investigates several applications of the DesignMap system.

summary This paper outlines the work and organizational framework of World16, a working group of 16 professors from around the world that engage in collaborative research on virtual reality (VR) technologies. Because of the abundance of VR software and the resulting fragmentation of research efforts in this field, World16 shares knowledge and resources using a common software package. A common research platform facilitates the sharing of data and the coordination of research efforts among member professors spread around the world. In addition to the organizational practices of World16’s project management team, various tools and methods of sharing research are described. Additionally, World16’s major research projects are outlined as well as the successes and failures of working within a shared software platform. Lastly, future work and goals of World16 are discussed, including the marketing and commercialization of several computational tools created by member professors.

summary This paper introduces the activities of World8, an international working group on virtual reality, and demonstrates the group’s developed VR applications in architecture. Group members come from eight universities around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Chile, Canada, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates. The main objective is to develop a research framework for collaboration between architectural schools and a software developing company. Specifically, the group is looking to create new applications for VR visualizations of urban settings with dynamic agents such as human and vehicular traffic. Models developed by these members are explained, and the project is reviewed based on survey results.

title Rapid SmartCode Modeling - Procedural Modeling for Urban Environments

summary This paper presents an image-driven method to rapidly generate 3D digital urban models for presentation in a real-time Virtual Reality (VR) environment. Several computational tools and methods are developed in order to give the end user the ability to transform a single 2D image into a realistically textured and rendered a 3D urban model. Using this method, city models based on SmartCode, a template for planning and urban design, are generated and presented in a VR visualization tool. The methods to generate VR city models including inputs, process, output, and pipeline are explained. One generated 3D city model is demonstrated in the results section.

summary The research endeavors to investigate the approaches and applications made in areas of online communities and forums in order to benefit from. The research proceeds to present an innovative contribution that could be described as a visual design library, a visual design community, and a novel use of networking in designing. The fields investigated by the research are: Online Communities and Forums, Networking and Collaborative Design, and Online Design Environment. The research contribution includes introducing a computer program called DesignMap that masters and presents a massive number of visual designs in two and three dimensions. The introduced software through its functions not only serves main applications of design disciplines of architecture and urban planning, but also combines significances of the investigated fields. Three comprehensive goals are investigated and introduced through this research: First, the proposed program is a means of getting architects and urban planners, who typically work in the domain of computationally introducing the design environment, involved in the creation and exploration of their designated forms for enhancing objects and spaces. Second, the program provides a design map for any architect and urban planner to search, visualize, modify, and then add designs through a wide range of form categories based on formal properties of objects relationship. Each user can have access to any part or category in this design map. Third, the research introduces the DesignMap as a tool to form and build up a networking community by bringing architects and urban planners with an interest in design area together to share in designing and to create design series.

summary This research attempts to formulate a computational framework for exploring spatial arrangements in the early phases of design. In the physical world, this could be compared to exploring spatial arrangements using cardboard cut-outs or simply a grid of spaces on paper. This research demonstrates the framework by means of a generative design system that introduces axial order in a plan parti made up of discrete 3D objects. The tool is designed to organize the 3D objects along an Axis specified by the user and also rearrange them following user-defined mathematical expressions. The numerical parameters (the dimensions and physical properties of the individual objects) are linked through the mathematical expressions to vary the spatial arrangement of objects. Implementation of the tool involves the Self Organizing Maps (SOMs) as the Graphical User Interface (GUI) in generative systems. This allows the user to select and dynamically view spatial arrangements that have been organized on a map based on their similarity. The application is implemented, tested, and its results are demonstrated using buildings designed by Louis I. Kahn, Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe.

summary The intention of this paper is to examine the mutual influences of initial architectural, structural and digital manufacturing related decisions on the evolution of free-form structures. A survey on current applications will be presented to lay the foundation for the examination of new production techniques and structural concerns for the computer generated expressive forms. Finally, the paper will describe an interactive web-based database project which aims to establish a grammar on the mutual influences of architectural, structural and production related features of free-forms. Based on the built examples of blob structures, the database serves as a catalogue of possibilities related to form, and facilitate assessment of the impact of the early choices on the free-form building design and development.

summary Learning in architecture has shifted from an individual focused approach to a larger system of interacting individuals in a situated, tool-mediated and socio-technical context. In addition to developing essential skills to work with diverse design software and taking part in collaborative design activities, learners also need to be equipped with competencies that will allow them to operate intelligently outside of situations of distributed cognitions. The challenge in present educational climate is to develop pedagogical approaches where situations of distributed cognition are not the ends themselves but are the means for improving mastery of solo competencies. The paper contributes to the current discussion about the need to re-orient architectural education and proposes a pedagogical framework for the development of a new web-based teaching/learning environment (socio-cognitive eco-system) as an integrated platform to support both autonomous and distributed learning.

summary This paper provides a critical overview of some of the fundamental issues regarding the adoption and integration of BIM – both as a method and as a technology – in Architectural education. summary The recent advances in digital design media and digital fabrication processes have introduced formal and procedural effects on the conception and production of architecture. In order to bridge the individual concepts and processes of multiple design disciplines, intensive cross-disciplinary communication and information exchange starting from the very early stages of design is necessary. A web-based database for design learning and design teaching named BLIP is introduced. In this framework, cross-disciplinary domain knowledge becomes explicit to be taught and transferred in Free-Form Design research and education. BLIP proposes a conceptual map through which the user can construct structured representations of concepts and their relationships. These concepts are high-level abstractions of formal, structural and production related concepts in Free-Form design development. BLIP is used for formalizing, organizing and representing conceptual maps of the three domains and facilitates information and knowledge sharing in collaborative conceptual design in context. The paper introduces the application together with its application in two educational design experiments.

summary This paper focuses on the emerging domain of digital free-form design, and attempts to explicate its knowledge content and characteristics through a systematic inquiry of the digital free-form design practice. The massive amount of information associated with the design and construction demands of the complexly shaped buildings demand explicit knowledge about the way various information pieces relate to one another. This paper reports on the process of developing a knowledge framework which serves as a reference model to describe and explain the free-form design and production processes in terms of the interaction of contextual conditions and according to the different ways design problems are perceived and formulated by the members of the design teams. The framework provides guidelines for the development of a web-based design decision support system to support collaborative knowledge construction, sharing and reuse in the domain.

summary This article reports on the initial analyses and findings of on-going research project which investigates the socio-technical transformation of Architectural practice due to technology adoption.A conceptual framework is developed as a tool to identify, analyse, and characterize the different socio-technical networks in current practice, and the ways in which these networks are being developed and coordinated. Highly technology- mediated and interdisciplinary architectural/engineering practices have been monitored and studied in their real-life project contexts.Through comparative case analyses, a conceptual framework has been developed and used to represent and analyse emerging socio- technical networks and the ways in which these networks facilitate innovation. In this context, new modes/practices of innovations are identified through the diverse and dynamic relationships emerging between architects, digital tools/systems, the design artefact, and the various multi-disciplinary knowledge/actors in a socio-technical setting.

title Enhancing human-building interaction and spatial experience in cultural spaces

summary In the realm of architectural evolution, the paradigm of static built environments has progressively shifted towards adaptive, responsive, and intelligent spaces. This paper presents a pioneering government-funded applied research project, the ‘Spatially Intelligent Arts Centre’, which exemplifies the convergence of multiple disciplines in the pursuit of redefining the traditional notion of a static arts centre. This endeavour sought to transform an existing arts centre building into a dynamic and intelligent space, thereby redefining its agency to foster novel user experiences and optimize operational efficiency. The project transcended conventional boundaries by merging the expertise of architects, computer scientists, user experience designers, spatial computing specialists, technology developers, and interface designers. Through transdisciplinary collaboration and adopting a design-thinking methodology, the project not only challenges the conventional limitations of architectural design but also offers a tangible illustration of the burgeoning field of human-building interaction research and practice. This paper details the conceptual underpinnings, technical implementations, and experiential outcomes of the Spatially Intelligent Arts Centre project, underscoring its significance as a model for implementation of human-building interaction in the context of a cultural building

summary Recent introduction and coupling of digitally mediated design and production environments facilitated a radical deviation from the traditional ways of using representations, knowledge assets, organizational forms and standards. Consequently, we observe an abundance of the traditional views of design and the emergence of new cognitive models/constructs based on the emerging relationships between the designer, the design object (artefact), the design tools/systems and the organizational network of the various actors and their activities in building design & production. The paper reports on the initial findings of an ongoing research which aims to uncover the ways in which digitalization and digital tools have recently been adopted to the work practices of multidisciplinary firms and the evolving socio-technical networks and organizational infrastructures within architectural practice.

summary This study explores the use of a computational method for decoding and encoding an art composition in the digital environment. Geometric decoding includes subdivision through color and shape. Five artworks of Mondrian, which contain simple but intense geometric data and have a unique composition style, are discussed in this context. Matrix-based expression of composition in terms of color and form with a code-based analysis allowed to definition of a control mechanism for existing geometric data. The aim of this decoding process, which follows segmentation and fragmentation methods, is to capture the common composition approach and particular comparison approach. Visual encoding, as the reverse of the decoding process, is the interpretation of the data obtained as a result of the analysis by assigning a color map. By this meanings, the matrixes and visual outputs enable the artworks to be compared according to the main composition style, or the similarities between them.

summary Town planning requires conscious handling of the existing urban structure and knowledge about its history. Only so planned modifications and supplements can be integrated in a sustainable manner into existing urban structures and have lasting effects. Modern CAD environments offer basically the possibility of supporting necessary planning process through additional integrated tools. In the project ‘Turban’ CAD extensions were developed additionally, providing planners and students with fundamental tools for data-capture and analysis around the temporal process from town developments.

summary In 1998, architecture schools in the three nation region of the upper Rhine came together to undertake a joint design studio. With the support of the Center for Entrepeneurship in Colmar, France, the schools worked on the reuse of the Kuenzer Mill situated near Herbolzheim, Germany. The students met jointly three times during the semester and then worked on the project at their home universities usng conventional methods. This project was essential to generating closer ties between the participating students, tutors and institutions and as such, the results were quite positive. So much so, that the organisers decided to repeat the exercise one year later. However, it became clear that although the students had met three times in large groups, the real success of a co-operative design studio would require mechanisms which allow far more intimate interaction among the participants, be they students, teachers or outside experts. The experiences from the Netzentwurf at the Institut für Industrielle Bauproduktion (ifib) showed the potential in a web based studio and the addition of ifib to the three nation group led to the development of the VuuA platform. The first project served to illuminate the the differences in teaching concepts among the partner institutions and their teaching staff as well as problems related to the integration of students from three countries with two languages and four different faculties: landscape architecture, interior design, architecture and urban planning. The project for the Fall of 1999 was the reuse of Fort Kléber in Wolfisheim by Strasbourg, France. The students again met on site to kick off the Semester but were also instructed to continue their cooperation and criticism using the VuuA platform.

summary The linking of planning and production is today of crucial importance in architectural planning processes. Though the teaching of techniques and methods of rapid prototyping in universities is not up to date, since the needed machinery is too expensive and the students’ direct and perpetual access to a sufficient number of systems cannot be granted. This paper describes a teaching project where architectural students tried to plan, build and test a 3-axes mill for themselves and their fellow students. It further describes the motivation and realization of the class and the possibility to integrate self-made and low cost milling machines in the education of architecture students.
