summary This paper reports on creative practice design research founded on the translation of complex polyrhythmic digital drumming into the spatial domain. We outline four exercises in the use of drumming improvisation as a methodology for the spatialization of polyrhythmic drum improvisation; as static Spatial Drum Notation and representation as 3D models, artefacts and in Virtual Environments and live drumming performance inside a VR CAVE. These creative exercises bring forward concepts of affordance of musico-spatial representations, a theoretical 'musico-perspectival hinge' and the continuum of performance, notation and representation.

summary This article aims to contribute to a better knowledge about the relations between algorithmic-parametric logic in creative activities and architectural design process. For this, the results of a didactic experience, carried out within a graduation course in which students are introduced to concepts, resources and techniques related to algorithmic-parametric logic, will be presented. This paper also presents a reflection on computational resources and the design process, in order to give theoretical and conceptual support to the developed exploration.

summary The use of "digital technology" - computer software, new material application, rapid prototyping, Computer Aided Manufacturing, Virtual Reality, collaborative design - is no longer a novel and innovative aspect of architectural design. In fact, many offices and architects use a varied mix of these technologies in their daily practice. We can observe that digital technology has become a mature part of architectural practice. In this paper, we want to outline an outstanding level of excellence in the use of digital technologies that enable certain widely acknowledged offices (for example Foster and Partners, UN Studio, BIG, and so on) to take their design work to high degree of quality and performance. We call this level and phenomenon "digital leadership." Digital leadership goes beyond technical digital skills. It is an integrated and holistic approach that makes no distinction between "architectural design" and "digital technology" and in fact creates a new blend of both. We propose that digital leadership has six key areas: Technological Ecologies; Creativity, Knowledge Processes, and Experimentation; Design and Research; Human Resources and Leadership; Collaborative and Explorative Environments and Impact of Digital Leadership. These are discussed in more detail in this paper.

summary Architects are generally perceived as “Formgivers with an extraordinary gift” (Ackerman, 1980:12). Implicit in this statement is the belief that the operations that architects employ to compose their designs are the product of a creative faculty that is beyond the reach of rational discourse, and thereby cannot be subjected to logical investigation. This view is detrimental to the advancement of knowledge about architectural composition and adversely affects both practice and education in architecture. More specifically, it prevents the architectural community from acquiring of a more refined conception about how architects derive their designs. In contrast to this view, this study demonstrates that architectural form-making is amenable to logical analysis. In specific, this is to be done through a theoretical and computational framework that describe and explain the tasks involved in the making of orthogonal building plans and sections. In addition to illustrating the susceptibility of architectural form-making to logical analysis, the frameworks proposed in this study overcome the limitations of previously established theories thatdeal with architectural form-making. These can be divided into two categories: normative and positive theories.Normative theories include architectural treatises and manifestos. A major limitation of normativetheories is that they have limited explanatory power. Their concern is with promoting a specific aesthetic ideology and prescribing rules that can be used to derive compositions that conform to it. Therefore, they cannot be used to explain form-making in general. Positive frameworks, such asshape grammar, rely on rules to describe derivation and analysis processes. Nevertheless, they do not provide a comprehensive description of the tasks involved in architectural form-making. This causes the relation between the rules and compositional tasks to be ambiguous. It also affects adversely the ability of these frameworks to provide architects with a complete understanding of the role of compositional rules in derivation or analysis processes.

summary Literature suggests that despite the increasing range and variety of computational tools and technologies, they have not really been employed for designing as extensively as it might be. This is due in part to the numerous challenges and impediments limiting their effective usage such as the methodological, procedural, and substantive factors and limitations, and skepticism about their impact of usage on the design process and outcome. The gap in our understanding of how advanced computational tools could support the design activities and design decision-making has expanded considerably to become a new area of inquiry with considerable room for the expansion of knowledge. This research is a single-case study that has been pursued in two phases: literature review and survey followed by analysis and discussion of the empirical results. The empirical observations were compared to the theoretical propositions and with results of similar research to highlight the areas and the extent to what the IT tools' usage have influenced the outcome of the design process. summary In this article, we present crowdsourcing as a design delivery method for publicly funded buildings, and compare it to the traditional Request for Proposals (RFP). We explore the potential of crowdsourcing through the use of an online design competition for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, IL, which the authors administered at Arcbazar.com, a crowdsourcing platform. Competition procedures have been applied in architectural practice since antiquity, from the Parthenon and the Hagia Sophia to thousands of seminal buildings around the globe. However, with the advent of digital technologies and outreach to a more interconnected world, crowdsourcing allows even the most mundane design challenges to go through the fair competition protocol. We argue that crowdsourcing can help democratize architectural design acquisition by giving a level playing field to designers, and produce a more just, competitive, and creative design product.

summary Parametric design is an emerging research issue in the design domain. However, discussions about the creative process in parametric design are limited. What is more, despite the passing of 57 years of parametric design's existence we still do not know what parametric design is. Is it a simple tool, which is useful in some kind of optimization of the architectural form, or it is a medium, which helps architects develop unexpected solutions, and perhaps this is already a new design paradigm? summary This article addresses an experiment carried out in the context of a digital fabrication laboratory and which purpose was to introduce basic algorithm concepts through the practice of Origami. The logical thinking associated with the area of programming is not common in the Brazilian educational institutions curriculum. This reality is noticeable in the environment of a FabLab, since it has a day dedicated to the free access and use of the community. No prerequisites are needed in order to attend the open day, enabling people to have access to numerically controlled equipments. For a conscientious use of these technologies it is important that the user have knowledge of the algorithmic logic allowing them to go beyond the basic functions inherent to each machine. The activity documented in this article intend to make the algorithmic logic accessible to a lay public insofar as the participant can identify similarities between the programming language and the development stages of the millennial technique of the paper fold.

summary In this paper we address the problem of knowledge management in architectural design computation practice, reflecting on our practice at Dsearch - a design computation network within White arkitekter. As a means to investigate relevant aspects of visual scripting, we introduce the notions of code, algorithm and note. We also introduce two different modes of operation within architectural practice: morphology and development - which help us distinguish the diverse knowledge types typically occurring in the structure of visual scripts. We describe two sets of tools developed by Dsearch to continuously integrate planning and documentation with design development work. The main conclusion from our practical experience of this approach is that it allows critical reflection into an efficient workflow. This constitutes a new kind of practice based and action oriented knowledge that can be curated in the form of design narratives.

title Towards a Genome for Zero Carbon Retrofit of UK Housing

summary The United Kingdom has some of the worst insulated housing stock in Northern Europe. This is in part due to the age of housing in the UK, with over 90% being built before 1990 [McCrone 2017, Piddington 2020]. Moreover, 85% of current UK housing will still be in use in 2050 by which stage their Government are targeting Net Carbon Zero [Eyre 2019]. Domestic energy use accounts for around 25% of UK carbon emissions. The UK will need to retrofit 20 million dwellings in order to meet this target. If this delivery were evenly spread, it would equate to over 2,000 retrofit completions each day. Government-funded initiatives are stimulating the market, with upwards of 60,000 social housing retrofits planned for 2023, but it is clear that a system must be developed to enable the design and implementation of housing-stock improvement at a large scale.This paper charts the 20-year development of a digital approach to the design for low-carbon domestic retrofit by architects Constructive Thinking Studio Limited and thence documents the emergence of a collaborative approach to retrofit patterns on a National scale. The author has led the Research and Development stream of this practice, developing a Building Information Modelling methodology and integrated Energy Modelling techniques to optimise design for housing retrofit [Georgiadou 2019, Ben 2020], and then inform a growing palette of details and a database of validated solutions [Moorhouse 2013] that can grow and be used to predict options for future projects [D’Angelo 2022]. The data is augmented by monitoring energy and environmental performance, enabling a growing body of knowledge that can be aligned with existing big data to simulate the benefits of nationwide stock improvement. The paper outlines incremental case studies and collaborative methods pivotal in developing this work The proposed outcome of the work is a Retrofit Genome that is available at a national level.

summary There is an absence of lightweight, sustainable construction materials in contemporary Haitian construction, a fact highlighted in the disproportionate loss of life in the 2010 Port-au-Prince earthquake. Between 2014 and 2017 the authors delivered a series of architectural design workshops in Haiti to raise awareness and develop design skills for bamboo using computational design tools. This paper provides a review of these workshops and a preliminary evaluation from surveys conducted with the course participants. Results showed architectural education had changed perceptions of bamboo and showed potential positive ecological impact due to subsequent reforestation activities instigated by participants. Weaknesses were in the lack of subsequent use of parametric modelling software. Bamboo material knowledge and a new architectural design methodology have been most relevant to their professional or academic work.

summary Architecture is a profession that requires collaboration among professionals from various fields. Despite the important nature of these interdisciplinary collaborations, architecture students rarely obtain the opportunity to learn about the work areas of other stakeholders and the practice of working together. In all sectors there is a growing need for professionals who possess in-depth knowledge in their own disciplines and also develop an understanding about other related disciplines. In a setting of a student project competition, this article examines how students from various AEC fields collaborate using BIM as a common data environment and emphasizes several considerations for implementing interdisciplinary collaborations in curriculums of architecture schools in students’ perspective.

summary The article presents the 'Digital Geometry Techniques' course taught at the second year of the undergraduate course at the Faculty of Architecture in the Warsaw University of Technology - WUT. The course introduces mathematical theory and generative modeling in order to prepare the students to consciously plan their creative process and to choose the set of tools according to an initial analysis of modeling constraints. The students gain knowledge on advanced CAAD techniques through learning functions of a particular program, and also by tackling geometry-related problems derived from real-world architectural projects. They are able to develop individual solutions using adequate techniques. We present three different students' semester works as examples to reflect on the significance of mathematics and algorithmization in the process of problem solving and form creation in architecture and urban design.

summary The present paper presents a framework for an Automated Code Compliance (ACC) system within a BIM environment. We begin by introducing the concept of ACC and its applicability in contemporary practice in general and BIM in particular. We proceed by introducing the mathematical method of Multi-Dimensional Data Fitting (MDDF) to develop singular structural design equations from multi-dimensional datasets of structural design equations employed in international design codes. We follow this by demonstrating how the MDDF output has been implemented in BIM-based software, to achieve code compliance. Finally, we demonstrate the overarching framework and how this can be implemented on a wide scale to achieve full ACC.

summary In the case of designers, architects and arts, tools are part of a repertoire of cognitive, symbolic, and semiotic artifacts with which each explores and learn about design problems. Nonetheless, when using digital fabrication tools, a dichotomy between what is ideated and what is made appears as an evident problem since many of the perceptual aspects of sensing and thinking about new things in the making are neglected. It is argued that this establishes a dichotomy between what is ideated and what is executed as an outcome from that idea. How designers can think, learn and augment their creativity by using digital tools in a more relational, exploratory, interactive and creative way? Furthermore, how can we teach design using contemporary fabrication tools beyond its representational capabilities? This paper explores the richness of using digital fabrication tools through the lens of shapes grammars as a design paradigm in order to extend computational making including digital fabrication tools, gestures and material behavior as crucial actors of the design process. Through the use of discrete heuristics - that is, the elaboration of deictic rules for computation with physical objects, materials and fabrication tools in a precise yet perceptual way- this paper shows experiments inside a third year design studio to overcome the hylomorphism present in the digital design and make dichotomy.

summary This paper reports on an investigation of the potentials of data utilisation in Architecture from a value generation and business creation points of view, based on an ongoing PhD research by the first author. It is of crucial importance to, first, identify what data actually signifies for Architecture, and secondly to explore how the value obtained through data-driven approaches in other industries could potentially be transferred and applied in our professional context. These objectives have been achieved through a qualitative comparative analysis of various cases. Additionally, the paper discusses the multiplicity of factors which contribute to different interpretations and utilisation of data with reference to various value systems embedded into our profession (e.g. design as ideology, design as profession, design as service). A comparative analysis of the existing data utilisation methods in connection with various value systems provide crucial insights in order to answer the following questions: How can data assess values in architectural design/practice? How can data utilisation give way to the emergence of new values for the profession?

summary Today more than 50% of the population is located in cities. This is an essential need, considering the facilities that urban life offers in contrast to the rural one. But, despite the benefits this migration brings to the individuals, it is also associated with some degree of unpredicted behavior which harms the community. In the recent years Albania, like most developing countries, has been facing problems with both informality and the inability to come up with concrete design solutions to adapt quick changes. From this perspective, this paper illustrates a research done to encompass new tools in the urban design practice of Albania for the overcoming of the current design difficulties.It describes a new approach to assess the problematics in the city of Tirana, and implement an algorithmic procedure which creates urban design proposals similar but not limited to the existing ones. Together with other evaluation tools, these new proposals can be tested in terms of energy efficiency, solar access and ventilation performance with the ultimate goal of creating a unified work model which not only will speed up the process but also improve its overall design efficiency.

summary During the last decade the hype for digitally fabricated educational pavilions has become very popular among architecture schools. A survey with the aim to catalogue and classify educational pavilions revealed more than 120 cases of digitally fabricated pavilions within the last decade. The analysis of the sample of 120 Design-Build projects built during the period 2006-2016 revealed, apart from obvious similarities and differences, the prevailing trends relating to the materials and the technology used for the design, manufacturing and assembly. From the processing of the gathered data a set of typologies emerge, which relate both to morphological characteristics as well as to the design process. The paper concludes by discussing the advantages and critical points of this educational practice and the learning outcomes for both students and educators.

summary This paper reports on a research project oriented to support the communication for, and realization of a sculptural masterpiece within an urban context in the historic centre of Rome. The sculpture has been installed just a few months before the 2017 eCAADe, thus enabling conference participants to explore the final output in situ. While the whole process of creation of the art piece is outlined, our focus is on the description of implementing various technologies like laser scanning, Virtual Reality (VR) and Numerical Simulations that have been used to accomplish the relevant tasks. The general field of investigation is how digital tools and a VR approach to modelling, simulating and developing sculptural components of an artwork could facilitate the workflow between artist, client, designers, engineers, urbanists, archaeologists, art foundry fabricators and public authorities. Methodologically, an action research approach was adopted for this project, primarily for its ability to link between research and practice in order to solve a realistic multidisciplinary problem in its actual setting.
