summary This paper reviews the historical and contemporary relationships between architectural design and Human Computer Interaction (hereafter HCI).Through this discussion the paper focuses on the enduring use of architecture as a metaphor in interaction design and the growing recognition that architectural space shapes the territory within which we interact with computational information.The paper begins with a brief discussion of the History of HCI before examining the relationship between the development of the computer Graphical User Interfaces (hereafter GUIs) and more recent work on Ubiquitous and Pervasive Computing.The paper then explores some current themes in HCI with a view to looking for potential overlaps between architectural design and new trends in the design of computational systems.

summary The paper details the computational modelling work to define a new type of responsive material system based on genetically engineered bacteria cells. We introduce the discipline of synthetic biology and show how it may be possible to program a cell to respond genetically to inputs from its environment. We propose a system of synthetic biocementing, where engineered cells, living within a soil matrix, respond to pore pressure changes in their environment when the soil is loaded by synthesising new material and strengthening the soil. We develop a prototype CAD system which maps genetic responses of individual bacteria cells to geotechnical models of stress and pore pressure. We show different gene promoter sensitivities may make substantial changes to patterns of consolidation. We conclude by indicating future research in this area which combines both in vivo and in silico work.

title CoBuilt 4.0: Investigating the potential of collaborative robotics for subject matter experts

summary Human-robot interactions can offer alternatives and new pathways for construction industries, industrial growth and skilled labour, particularly in a context of industry 4.0. This research investigates the potential of collaborative robots (CoBots) for the construction industry and subject matter experts; by surveying industry requirements and assessments of CoBot acceptance; by investing processes and sequences of work protocols for standard architecture robots; and by exploring motion capture and tracking systems for a collaborative framework between human and robot co-workers. The research investigates CoBots as a labour and collaborative resource for construction processes that require precision, adaptability and variability.Thus, this paper reports on a joint industry, government and academic research investigation in an Australian construction context. In section 1, we introduce background data to architecture robotics in the context of construction industries and reports on three sections. Section 2 reports on current industry applications and survey results from industry and trade feedback for the adoption of robots specifically to task complexity, perceived safety, and risk awareness. Section 3, as a result of research conducted in Section 2, introduces a pilot study for carpentry task sequences with capture of computable actions. Section 4 provides a discussion of results and preliminary findings. Section 5 concludes with an outlook on how the capture of computable actions provide the foundation to future research for capturing motion and machine learning.

summary Dynamic shading compositions present a challenge for computer simulation of illuminance performance still in the design phase of the project. Such architectural elements have a conflicting function, shading without blocking natural light. The evaluations of these dynamic elements present an infinity of parameters and several combinations, resulting in compositional complexity and making it difficult to read and understand the performance. The objective of this research is to identify the optimized positioning of dynamic facade shading elements. The dependent variable to be analyzed is the annual average illuminance. The algorithm that creates the shape of the Shoebox and manipulates the independent variables is the same that performs the annual daylight assessment. Simulation results are the metamodel input data, Machine Learning is used for the optimization. The contribution of this research is to test the set of results of the independent variables, training an algorithm capable of replacing the simulation.

summary In this paper, we focus on the regeneration of the existing building stock coupled to the implementation of decarbonization policies. We propose a digital collaborative framework for the extension of buildings enabling a quick comparison of neighborhoods in the early design stages. The framework proposes the potential extendable roofs based on Geospatial information and a set of rules and further engineering analysis that are defined by the experts. The system selects the buildings that can host roof vertical extensions, with a first analysis of the expected Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) impacts based on previous LCA aggregated models.

summary In Performance-Driven Design, it is challenging for different stakeholders such as the end-users to participate in the co-designing process. Performance-driven design requires complex algorithmic calculations, simulations, and optimizations. These computational functionalities enabled for this design process lack of transparency and can be sometimes complicated to understand. Therefore, the current applications of Performance-Driven Design contradict the participatory design where social interactions are considered as important steps to produce desirable and accepted design outcomes. In this context, the main aim of this study reported in this paper based on a 4-years PhD thesis at Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology and KU Leuven, is to address research methods suitable for enabling higher levels of participation in Performance-Driven Design and thus to provide recommendations and guidelines.

summary Many situations related to natural environment and human activities increase the risk related to housing and create a demand for rapid post-disaster solutions. The solutions implemented by both the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the local and national organizations should fulfill the requirements of the temporarily displaced populations. However post-disaster design faces many challenges in its process making the response always more complex. At the same time, computer-based design is a growing approach in both architectural practice and research. The research described in this paper aims to help in finding solutions to design issues by addressing the potential of computer-based architectural design support. It is applied to shelter and camp development and takes into account physical, contextual and climatic parameters. The outcome is a design process for shelter and camp, which has been validated by a parametric prototype experiment in a case study. This should support humanitarian teams and contribute to enhancing the quality of design as well as to reducing the time required for the design and construction processes.

summary Excessive use of aggregate materials and metals in construction should be balanced by increasing use of construction materials from annually renewable resources based on natural lignocellulosic fibers. Parametric design tools gave here a possibility of using an alternative newly developed biocomposite material, for realization of complex geometries. Contemporary digital fabrication tools have enabled precise manufacturing possibilities and sophisticated geometry-making to take place that helped in obtaining high structural behavior of the overall global geometry of the discussed project. This paper presents a process of realizing an experimental structure made from Natural Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (NFRP)- also referred to as biocomposites, which were synthesized from lignocellulosic flexible core reinforced by 3D-veneer layers in a closed-moulding vacuum-assisted process. The biocomposite sandwich panels parameters were developed and defined before the final properties were imbedded in the parametric model. This paper showcases the multi-disciplinarity work between architects, structural engineers and material developers. It allowed the architects to work on the material development themselves and enabled to apply a new created design philosophy by the first author, namely applying ‘Materials as a Design-Tool’. The erected biocomposite segmented shell construction allowed a 1:1 validation for the whole design process, material development and the digital fabrication processes applied. The whole development has been reached after merging an ongoing industrial research project results with academic education at the school of architecture in Stuttgart-Germany.

summary This paper presents a reinforcement learning (RL) based design method for kinetic facades to optimize the movement direction of shading panels. Included with this research is a case study on the Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta, USA to examine the effectiveness of the proposed design method in a real-life context. Optimization of building performance has been given increased attention due to the significant impact buildings have on energy consumption and carbon emissions. Further, building performance is closely related to the "Sustainable Cities and Communities‚ mentioned in SDG11. Results show that the novel design method improved the building performance by reducing solar radiation and glare and illustrate the potential of RL in tackling complex design problems in the architectural field.

summary Do we experience the size and character of virtual spaces in the same way as real spaces? What impact has the meaning of a space, i.e. furniture and other clues to the use of a space, on our experience of it? This paper describes an experiment where the participants could navigate through a room, first on desktop-VR, then in full-scale VR (in a CAVE) and finally in a full-scale model. In a first phase the room was empty and only defined through walls, windows and doors. Later on furniture was added as well as colors and textures. The experiment was a pilot study and threw light on some questions which we intend to develop in further investigations. It showed that the participants used building components like doors and windows and furniture in the presentation on desktop VR for their estimation of the size of the room. In the CAVE and in the full-scale model the participants' bodies were the measure for their estimations. The experiment also hinted at that color and texture had an impact on the experience of size.

title SPATIAL NAVIGATION IN VIRTUAL REALITY

summary For the past decade, we have carried out a number of participation projects using full-scale modeling as an aid for communication and design. We are currently participating in an interdisciplinary research project which aims to combine and compare various visualization methods and techniques, among others, full-scale modeling and virtual reality, in design processes with users. In this paper, we will discuss virtual reality as a design tool in light of previous experience with full-scale modeling and literature on cognitive psychology. We describe a minor explorative study, which was carried out to elucidate the answers to several crucial questions: Is realism in movement a condition for the perception of space or can it be achieved while moving through walls, floors and so forth? Does velocity of movement and reduced visual field have an impact on the perception of space? Are landmarks vital clues for spatial navigation and how do we reproduce them in virtual environments? Can “daylight“, color, material and texture facilitate navigation and are details, furnishings and people important objects of reference? How could contextual information clues, like views and surroundings, be added to facilitate orientation? Do we need our other senses to supplement the visual experience in virtual reality and what is the role of mental maps in spatial navigation?

summary This paper describes an experiment in which a virtual learning environment was used in the context of an architectural design course. The objective was to evaluate the capability of the learning environment used to support the interactions needed, between teacher-student and between students, for the establishment of a process of discussion and development of architectural design. Some limitations imposed either by the virtual learning environment or by the context of the experiment itself were identified and also positive points, such as the possibility to register the whole design process. All this data subside studies about the process of teaching/learning architectural design validating this experiment and allowing the promotion of new experiments in the different stages of this academic process.

summary Architectural designs are principally represented by drawings. Usually, each drawing corresponds to one design or aspects of one design. On the other hand, one executable drawing corresponds to a set of designs. These drawings are the same as conventional drawings except that they have computer code or programs embedded in them. A specific design is the result of the computer executing the code in a drawing for a particular set of parameter values. If the parameters are changed, a new design or design variation is produced. With executable drawings, a CAD system is also a program editor. A designer not only designs by drawing but also programming. It fuses two activities: the first, drawing, is basic in architectural practice; and the second, progamming, or specifying the relation of outputs from inputs, is basic in computer system development. A consequence of executable drawings is that architectural form is represented by graphical entities (lines or shapes) as well as computer code or programs. This type of architecture we call digital architecture. Two simple examples are presented: first, the design of a building in terms of an executable drawing of the architects, Sangallo the Younger and Michelangelo, and second, a description of an object oriented implementation of a preliminary prototype of an executable drawing system written in 1997 which computes a simple office layout.

summary The full-scale model in Wageningen was developed some 35 years ago and has been in use ever since. In a recent brochure about our mock-up system you will find four applications of our model: education, research, consultancy and information. In this paper some information about these four subjects will be presented in the sequence just mentioned. First some general information will be given about the system and about the methodological aspects of the use of our model, named 'the Structural Space Planning Method'.
