summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary In the summer of 2018, our collaboration was awarded a University Design Fellowship from the Exhibit Columbus organization to design, fabricate, and build a large pavilion in Columbus, Indiana as part of a biannual contemporary architecture exhibition. Our proposal for the competition was a pavilion that would double as an ecological education center. Our inspiration for this program was triggered in part by our reading of Jane Bennett’s materialist philosophy outlined in her book Vibrant Matter (2009). Through Bennett’s lens, our design rendered our site’s context as an animate field, replete with pre-existing material composites that we wanted to celebrate through a series of displays, information boards, and artificial lighting. In this, the installation would feature samples of local plants, minerals, and rocks, indigenous to Southern Indiana.

summary The following project was created as part of an art residency with the Wellcome Centre for Mitochondrial Research (WCMR) at Newcastle University. The WCMR specializes in leading-edge research into mitochondrial disease, investigating causes, treatments, and ways of avoiding hereditary transmission. Mitochondria is believed to have started off as a separate species that through symbiosis came to be the powerhouse of each cell in our bodies (Hird 2009). Mitochondrial disease is a genetic disorder that is caused by genetic mutations of the DNA of the mitochondria or the cell that in turn affects the mitochondria (Bolano 2018). Mitochondria is a hereditary condition and can affect people at different stages in their lives. It can affect various organs and has a link to various types of conditions. Therefore, the patient experience is unique to each individual and the elusive nature of the condition can make it particularly challenging due to the complexity of the disorder as well as the inaccessible scale on which these variations occur (Chinnery 2014)

summary Evolution of natural life and subsequently selection of life forms is an interesting topic that has been explored multiple times. This area of research and its application has high relevance in evolutionary design and automated design generation. Taking inspiration from Charles Darwin's theory, all biological species were formed by the process of evolution based on natural selection of the fittest (Darwin, n.d.) this paper explains exploratory research showcasing semi-automatic design generation. This is realized by an interactive artificial selection tool, where the designer or the end user makes key decisions steering the propagation and breeding of future design artifacts. This paper, describes two prototypes and their use cases, highlighting interaction based optimal design selection. One of the prototypes explains a 2d organic shape creator using a metaball shape approach, while the other discusses a spatial layout generation technique for conceptual design.

summary The paper is exploring methodology within the work in progress research by design through teaching project called 'Synergetic Landscapes'. It discusses codesign and cocreation processes that are crossing the academia, NGOs and applied practice within so called 'real life codesign laboratory' (Davidová, Pánek, & Pánková, 2018). This laboratory performs in real time and real life environment. The work investigates synergised bio-digital (living, non-living, physical, analogue, digital and virtual) prototypical interventions in urban environment that are linked to circular economy and life cycles systems running on blockchain. It represents a holistic systemic interactive and performing approach to design processes that involve living, habitational and edible, social and reproductive, circular and token economic systems. Those together are to cogenerate synergetic landscapes.

summary The Contextualized Digital Heritage Workshop - Lodz continues the path started by two successful workshops held during the eCAADe (Oulu, Finland) and CAADRIA (Suzhou, China) conferences. This workshop aims at creating a space to allow scholars to discuss, share and apply their skills and knowledge in a digital heritage experiment contextualized in Lodz, Poland. The city has a rich industrial heritage. Hence, this event will allow participants to explore an architectural heritage that was not investigated during the previous two workshops which were focused on different kind of heritage. Digital technologies together with multidisciplinary approaches allow to study and analyse tangible and intangible features of architectural heritage in alternative and innovative ways. The workshop will build upon the experiences and reflections elaborated during and after the previous two events.

summary In the following paper, a description, a comparison, a series of reflections, and future directions of two successful Contextualized Digital Heritage Workshops (CDHW) will be presented. The workshops have been organized during the eCAADe and CAADRIA conferences. The importance of architectural heritage as an expression of a local history and identity in a world that is more and more globalised is evident. Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, together with the use of digital technologies open new opportunities in the comprehension, documentation, analysis, reuse and dissemination of architectural heritage. The main concept behind a CDHW is to connect the event (and its wide variety of participants) to a specific local context in a multidisciplinary way. The paper defines and proposes a methodology to critically evaluate the two workshops and their individual aspects in order to identify and investigate ideas that can be explored during future CDHWs.

summary The paper discusses 23 interviewed architects in practice about the role of traditional and digital sketching (human-computer interaction) in communication with the client. They were selected from 1995 to 2018 (the interval of graduation) from three different countries: the Czech Republic (CR), Slovakia (SR), Netherland (NR). To realize three blending areas that impact the approach to sketching: (I) Traditional hand and physical model studies (1995-2003). (II)Transition form - designing by hand and PC (2004–2017). (III) Mainly digital and remote forms of designing (2018–now). Interviews helped transform 31 “parameters of tools use” from the previous theoretical framework narrowed down into six main areas: (1) Implementation; (2)Affordability; (3)Timesaving; (4) Drawing support; (5) Representativeness; (6) Transportability. Paper discusses findings from interviewees: (A) Implementation issues are above time and price. (B) Strongly different understanding of what digital sketching is. From drawing in Google Slides by mouse to sketching in Metaverse. (C) Substantial reduction of traditional sketching (down to a total of 3% of the time) at the expense of growing responsibilities. (D) 80% of respondents do not recommend sketching in front of the client. Also, other interesting findings are further described in the discussion.

summary The changing social structure and the development of new technologies in the emerging Society of Knowledge makes possible the development a new kind of living space or habitat that adapts and responds to the needs and problems of elderly. The exponential growth of the aging population in EU, US and Japan is well proven and it urgently calls for the innovative solutions. Today use of automated and robotic elements in design opens the new possibilities for architecture. This paper offers the background of the problem, presents few precedents of assisted by mechatronics solutions, review the four experimental design projects from Warsaw University of Technology and in conclusion propose the agenda for further design research.

summary According to eCAADe's mission, the exchange and collaboration within the area of computer aided architectural design education and research, while respecting the pedagogical approaches in the different schools and countries, can be regarded as a core activity. The current session follows up on the first Contextualised Digital Heritage Workshop (CDHW) held on the occasion of eCAADe 2016 in Oulu (D. di Mascio et.al.) This event was thought to represent the first of a series of future contextualized digital heritage workshops and hence, the name Oulu interchangeable with the name of any other city or place. The second CDHW took place in the framework of CAADRIA 2017 in Suzhou (D. di Mascio & M.A. Schnabel) and focussed on sharing and dissemination of heritage information and personal experiences, such as narratives.The primary objective for the 2018 digital heritage session is to engage participants in an active discussion, not the longer format presentation of prepared positions. The round table itself is limited to short opening statements so as to ensure time is allowed for viewpoints to be exchanged and for the conference attendees to join in on the issues discussed. The panel will review past practices with the potential for guiding future direction.

summary This paper discusses the ability to apply machine learning to the combinatorial design-assembly at the scale of a building to urban form. Connecting the historical lines of discrete automata in computer science and formal studies in architecture this research contributes to the field of additive material assemblies, aggregative architecture and their possible upscaling to urban design. The following case studies are a preparation to apply deep-learning on the computational descriptions of urban form. Departing from the game Go as a testbed for the development of deep-learning applications, an equivalent platform can be designed for architectural assembly. By this, the form of a building is defined via the overlap between separate building parts. Building on part-relations, this research uses mereology as a term for a set of recursive assembly strategies, integrated into the design aspects of the building parts. The models developed by research by design are formally described and tested under a digital simulation environment. The shown case study shows the process of how to transform geometrical elements to architectural parts based merely on their compositional aspects either in horizontal or three-dimensional arrangements.

summary This paper aims to link the blockchain technology with property issues and in extend architectural design decisions at the urban scale. In an urban design context, this paper investigates the new potentials of urban form connected to the application of the logic of the blockchain to urban design. With this, the article concentrates on the distributed way of sharing information, with no intent to focus on cryptography issues related to the blockchain. Transferring the blockchain's core concepts of data distribution through ledgers, to patterns of shared and private owned spaces it can lead to what we propose as polyphonic spaces, with overlapping uses. Urban realm, designed as a chain, initiates with the binary condition of private and shared but handles it as a way to interact, through nesting, its initial parts. We think that the blockchain theory is capable of challenging architecture by shifting the weight from individual elements of composition to compound entities (block) that incorporate all the information needed.Please write your abstract here by clicking this paragraph.

summary This paper focuses on the implementation of a digital repository and content management of the Museo de la Revolución Industrial, in Fray Bentos, as part of a project carried out in the context of the I+D project "La ciudad inteligente; un palimpsesto digital", currently under development in the Laboratory of Advanced Digital Visualization (Vidialab) of the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urbanism (FADU). The project main theme is the emerging paradigm of Smart Cities with focus on the territory as an integral cultural landscape. The experience, implementation, processed involved and related topics, are described and analyzed theoretically, in the search of architectural and historical heritage dissemination.

summary In 2018 after Typhoon Mangkhut hit Hong Kong, the city lost around 80% of its existing corals. As a consequence, a team consisting of marine biologists and architects have developed a series of performative structures that will be deployed in Hong Kong waters intending to aid new coral growth over the coming years. This paper describes the present research that focuses on the design and fabrication of artificial reef structures utilizing a robotic 3d clay printing method addressing the specificities of Hong Kong marine ecologies. The paper describes further the algorithmic design methodology, the optimization processes in the generation of the printing path, and the methodology for the fabrication processes during the production cycle to achieve even quality and prevent cracking during the drying process.

summary House Block was a temporary housing prototype in East London, UK from April to May 2021. The project constituted the most recent in a series of experiments developing Automated Architecture (AUAR) Labs’ discrete framework for housing production, one which repositions the architect as curator of a system and enables participants to engage with active agency. Recognizing that there is a knowledge gap to be addressed for this reconfiguration of practices to take form, this project centred on making automation and its potential for local communities tangible. This sits within broader calls advocating for a more material alignment of inclusive design with makers and 21st Century making in practice (see, for example, Luck 2018).

House Block was designed and built using AUAR’s discrete housing system consisting of a kit of parts, known as Block Type A. Each block was CNC milled from a single sheet of plywood, assembled by hand, and then post-tensioned on site. Constructed from 270 identical blocks, there are no predefined geometric types or hierarchy between parts. The discrete enables an open-ended, adaptive system where each block can be used as a column, floor slab, wall, or stair—allowing for disconnection, reconfiguration, and reassembly (Retsin 2019). The democratisation of design and production that defines the discrete creates points for alternative value systems to enter, for critical realignments in architectural production.

summary This work refers to the design, development, fabrication and exhibition of the device called A.L.A.D.A. (Digital-Analogic Algorithmic Laminar Artifact), an experimental project that com-bines parametric-analog morphogenesis and digital fabrication in a process of architectural-spatial discovery based on cut-flexibility that results in a metaphorical operation, a kind of sim-ultaneous Muybridge-style kinematic capture. The experience arises from the collaborative interaction between two research projects on morphology and digital media, their new mor-phogenerative and manufacturing possibilities, and the thought of digital manufacturing from productive and morphogenetic processes, in conjunction with an experimental and productive space outside the university. The working methodology from 2D to 3D through the flexibiliza-tion of rigid sheets through small-scale laser cutting was adapted to work in large proportions to allow viewers to walk around the artifact.

summary This paper describes a novel method for reconstructing urban environments based on individual occupant experience. The method relies on a low-cost off-the-shelf 360-degree camera to capture video and audio data from a natural walk through the city. It then uses a custom workflow based on an open-source Structure from Motion (SfM) library to reconstruct a dense point cloud from images extracted from the 360-degree video. The point cloud and audio data are then represented within a virtual reality (VR) model, creating a multisensory environment that immerses the viewer into the subjective experience of the occupant.

This work questions the role of precision and fidelity in our experience and representation of a “real” physical environment. On the one hand, the resulting VR environment is less complete and has lower fidelity than digital environments created through traditional modeling and rendering workflows. On the other hand, because each point in the point cloud is literally sampled from the actual environment, the resulting model also captures more of the noise and imprecision that characterizes our world. The result is an uncanny immersive experience that is less precise than traditional digital environments, yet represents many more of the unique physical characteristics that define our urban experiences.

summary This design research reimagines the architectural detail in a postdigital framework and proposes digital methods to work upon discrete tectonics. Drawing upon Marco Frascari's writing The Tell-the-Tale Detail, the study aims to reimagine tectonic thinking for focused attention after the digital turn. Today, computational tools are powerful enough to perform operations more similar to physical tools than in the earlier digital era. These tools create a "digital materiality," where architects can manipulate digital information in parallel and overlapping ways to physical corollaries. (Abrons and Fure, 2018) To date, work in this area has focused on materiality specifically. This project reinterprets tectonics using texture map editing and point cloud information, particularly reconceptualizing jointing using images. Smartphone-based 3D digital scanning was used to captured details from a series of Carlo Scarpa's influential works, isolating these details from their physical sites and focusing attention upon individual tectonic moments. As digital scans, these details problematize the rhetoric of smoothness and seamlessness prevalent in digital architecture as they are discretely construed loci yet composed of digital meshes. (Jones 2014) Once removed from their contexts, reconnecting the digital scans into compositions of "compound details" necessitated a series of new mechanisms for constructing and construing not native to the material world. Using Photoshop editing of texture-mapped images, digital texturing of meshes, and interpretation of the initial material constructions, new joints within and between these the digital scanned details were created to reframe the original detail for the post-digital.

summary In less than 150 years our carbon society transformed the planet. Today more than 50% of ecologies in the world are determined by unsustainable industrialization processes. The latest IPCC reports show that we are quickly arriving at points of no return in the warming of our planet. We cannot afford to continue in the same direction, we need a new imagination. As part of an E.U.-US funded $1.9 million research project we have been working on multiple projects for the future of the Miami islands since 2018:1. We developed a generative GIS-BIM based Python API for mapping and optimization of carbon-neutral design workflows. It includes genetic design combinatorics with intuitive graphical Dynamo-Python-Grasshopper programming with experimental design results. 2. We worked on a series of design research for the Miami Bay that envisions islands, living shorelines, programmable soils, and infrastructures that grow by themselves using synthetic biology.

summary Designers, architects and different creative professionals have used biomimicry, as a recurrent tool to solve human problems through the identification of strategies, characteristics and solutions in nature. This article presents the first highlighted experiences of bio-inspired parametric textures applications in academia, particularly in final degree projects, which are carried out through the methodology proposed in the bio-inspired parametric textures research project. This paper is divided into two parts: the first part is focused on bio-inspired textures applications methodology; the second part is oriented to show two cases of final degree projects in the industrial design career.
