summary This work is part of master's research that has as main objective to analyze the plans referring to the Santo Antônio Hill, elaborated in the 20th century. For that moment, a pilot test was conducted with the Urban Plan of Affonso Reidy (1948). The proposal is to analyze the plans through the historical-interpretative method that investigates immersion as a guiding concept. It is intended to elaborate a three-dimensional model that combined with the use of digital simulation allows a first-person experience, in a pedestrian point of view, inserted in these city proposals. The work seeks to encourage discussions about the use of digital simulation for experimenting with elaborated but not built projects, seeking to complement the traditional ways of analysis and comparison.

summary Integrating empirical evidence into architectural design has the potential to create more humane, legible, and inclusive spaces. Yet, the fast-paced nature of the design process, limited proficiency in scientific terminology, and a natural reliance on design intuition limit architects' ability to effectively apply empirical findings to inform their design decisions. To address this gap, this paper presents DesignMind, a toolkit for evidence-based, cognitively-informed, and human-centred architectural design. DesignMind has four complementary modules: (1) evidence-based design flashcards, (2) topological and geometric analysis, (3) agent-based simulation, and (4) cognitive walkthrough in virtual reality. The effectiveness of DesignMind was evaluated in an academic context where architecture and STEM students used it to analyse and design healthcare and workplace layouts. Initial results show that DesignMind is effective in integrating evidence-based design into the architectural design process and providing students with tools to test their designs for human-centred design criteria such as wayfinding, social communication potential and nursing efficiency. These preliminary results underscore the challenges and opportunities of DesignMind to fuel parallel efforts in evidence-based design, calling for a critical discussion around the notion of evidence in architecture and its interplay with design intuition.

summary Based on the assumption that socio-technical networks of computation in architecture exist and must be analyzed deeper in order to understand the impact of algorithmic tools on the design process, the present paper offers a foray into it, drawing on science studies methodologies. The research explores in what regard multi-agent systems (MAS) are representative as much from the existence of these socio-technical networks as of how their development influences the tension between tacit and explicit knowledge at play in procedural design processes and of the strategies architectural designers develop to resolve this tension. A methodology of analysis of these phenomena is provided as well as results of the application of this method to MAS, leading to a better understanding of their development and impact in CAAD in the past two decades. Tactics of resolution shaped by early MAS users enable, through a double appropriation, a skillful implementation of architectural practice. Furthermore, their approach partially circumvents the establishment of technical biases tied to this algorithmic typology, at the cost of a lesser massive democratization of the algorithmic tools developed in relation to it.

summary The contemporary climate crisis pushed communities of actors, cities and citizens to use smart technology, digital platforms, and data-based intelligence to steer creative solutions for greening in their urban ecosystems. This phenomenon brought about an increasing imperative for citizen participation and inclusion, in the co-design of green infrastructures, suggesting alternative ways to deal with the lack or misuse of public space. In this framework, this paper analyzes the case of ''UnionYouth in Chania'', a project that aims a) to build an environmental awareness strategy for Generation Z, b) to promote capacity-building processes related to climate change and environmental protection, c) actually transform the city public space through participatory processes. Specifically, the project describes the creation of a digital platform and a mobile app consisting of several engagement tools that allow interaction between the digital community of youth, the city's decision-makers, and city greening actors. Therefore, the first part of the paper talks about the necessity of promoting today's participatory processes in the city for climate change mitigation through a literature review that emerged in the last decade. The second part of the paper examines a case study, namely UnionYouth in Chania, a digital collaborative platform that promotes methods for greening the city through district-based, activity-based, and network-based redesign solutions. The third part of the paper brings about interesting reflections on the relationship between the analog and digital world, and how bottom-up processes may be an important tool in city planning. The overall scope of the analysis of the specific case study is to bring insights into the architectural world, as a means to create more bridges with citizens and communities and contribute to their greening understanding.

summary In Belgium, traffic safety is currently one of the highest topics on the list of priorities of the government. The identification of black spots and black zones and profiling them in terms of accident related data and location characteristics must provide new insights into the complexity and causes of road accidents which, in turn, provide valuable input for government actions. Data mining is the extraction of information from large amounts of data. The use of data mining algorithms is therefore particularly useful in the context of large datasets on road accidents. In this paper, association rules are used to identify accident circumstances that frequently occur together. The strength of this descriptive approach lies within the definition of different accident types and the identification of relevantvariables that make a strong contribution towards a better understanding of accident circumstances. An analysis of the produced set of rules, describing underlying patterns in the data, indicates that fiveaspects of traffic accidents can be discerned: collision with a pedestrian, collision in parallel, sideways collision, week/weekend accidents and weather conditions. For each of these accident types, different variables play an important role in the occurrence of the accidents.

summary Current initiatives for urbanising space are focused on three key locations; Orbital settlements; Lunar settlements and Martian settlements. Of the three, Martian settlements present themselves as the most hospitable location for interplanetary colonisation due to the various similarities between Earth and Mars. Despite significant scientific research for the settlement of Mars, there lacks an equally significant Urban analysis and impact of such settlements. The presented study explores the habitation of Mars through an urban lens of efficiency that responds to geographic and climatic conditions, as well as addressing behavioural challenges of a human settlement on Mars. The study is presented through two key stages, the first establishes life support modules, while the second develops an urban solution for habitation. In both stages, a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm is implemented, with a focus on the selection mechanisms that choose the optimal solution from the population generated by the algorithm. The results showcase an adaptable model that allows for multiple stakeholders with varying expertise the ability to influence the design of a Martian settlement.

summary In sustainable urban development the first stage of the urban design process should consist of a pre-design phase where the context of the site is analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. In this paper we present a methodology for data mining an urban Geographic Information System (GIS) data set, consisting of three main phases: representation, analysis and description. The process reveals a series of block and street typologies at various levels of detail that highlight the different character of two neighbourhoods. This methodology is demanding in the preparation phase and requires a high level of GIS and statistics expertise in the analysis phase. However, it successfully addresses the complex multi-scale and multi-level nature of cities in a systematic way, providing a tool for systematic profiling of neighbourhoods, which is site and problem specific.

summary The ‘City Induction’ research project aims to develop an urban design framework at the scale of site planning consisting of three modules: formulation, generation and evaluation. This paper presents the start of the on-going research on the evaluation module with the aim of identifying and discussing the assumptions behind its development. The evaluation module will be driven by sustainable urban development principles, which determine the design analysis criteria and benchmarks, and it will be structured around selected urban analysis and design methodologies. We discuss the challenges of bringing these two domains together, and propose to incorporate techniques of interaction and video game design towards a more meaningful and inspirational design experience.

summary This project had as goal to investigate how an urban space can be represented, and how can we to present information that facilitated broad and interactive spatial analysis in an easy and friendly way. This target was reached trough the elaboration of a computer application that allowed urban information visualization about Salvador City. This tool let users to build thematic cartography, visualize interactive 3D models, images, etc. Project development already produced two different prototypes. First versions provide a great spatial analyze flexibility, but it interface founded in a workspace defined do not allow user to do all overlayer possible. In this case the tool was a kind of cartographic atlas. The actual version had as design presuppose, to give users more information, interactivity, power and flexibility, adopting new medias, new representation models, and presenting quantitative and qualitative information.

summary "Evolving effective responsive systems, and creating a credible interface between the work and the user, requires an awareness of many different types of user, contexts and functions as well as the phenomenological aspects of social and environmental conditions." (Bullivant, 2006). Responsive design and interactive architecture operates at the intersection of Architecture, Arts, Technology, Media Arts, HCI and Interaction Design in a physical context suggesting ways in which the existing physical environments can be augmented and extended adding a greater level of depth, meaning and engagement with the world around us. Through a series of case studies, this paper explores a number of principles which may be applied to the design of responsive environments of which public information systems form part. Divided into three main sections, the paper first explains how responsive environments have addressed the application of public information systems, secondly, through a series of case studies, precedents are highlighted which lead to development of principles for developing designs for responsive environments. The third section discusses and elaborates on these principles which have been developed based upon our own interpretations and grouping of precedents and approaches towards interaction design. This paper contributes towards the field of responsive environments and interactive architecture through an analysis of case studies to infer a framework from which responsive environments may be created and developed.

summary As part of an ongoing research about technical, rhetorical and aesthetical characteristics of architecture presentations in websites, this paper presents considerations about the means of representation and public diffusion of architecture and urbanism, focusing the specificities of digital media through the keywords “narrative”, “diagram” and “database”. In search for basis to think the structuring of information experience in architectural discourses, the text punctuates the profession’s peculiar needs for presentation and visualization, and its links with the three keywords. Then, it presents a case study (the Bjarke Ingels Group website) to illustrate aspects of the analysis intended by the research.

summary Motion pictures can illustrate worlds that have never been. They may show fantastic depictions of the future or an interpretation of the past. In either case, they have the power to reach millions of people across cultures, generations, and educational backgrounds with visions of our environment that do not exist in our everyday world.

The study of imaginary worlds in this design studio case study is limited to motion pictures that postulate unique, or new environments rather than those films that faithfully attempt to document or reconstruct reality. In this sense, the movies used for study have a lineage traceable to Georges Melies "who came to film from illusionism and the "heater," rather than to the reality of the Lumiere brothers who came from photography which ultimately would lead to "cinema-verite."

Discussions, assignments and presentations in the studio are organized to provide students with an opportunity to gain a different awareness of architecture and use varying stimuli as source material for design. The study of architectural history, art, formal principles of design, visual perception, and media are required in order to complete the reconstructions and creations of proposed environments.

All student work throughout the entire semester is created with electronic media and the computer is used as an integral component of the studio enabling analysis and study, design, model creation, and animation. The available capabilities of computer graphics in the studio enables students to explore analytic and synthetic issues of design in motion pictures in a manner not readily available when restricted to traditional media. Through the use of digital media we have an opportunity to better understand the imaginary worlds for what they communicate and the ideas they contain, and therefore create an opportunity to modify our own concept of architecture.

summary This paper is based on the assumption that because designingis aimed at specifying configurations of entities, designers mustmanipulate forms and shapes and they must resort to visual reasoning todo so. Visual reasoning in designing is seen as the interplay betweenfigural and conceptual reasoning, such that the one supports andcontinues the other in order to arrive at a configuration that is valid interms of all the requirements it is to satisfy. We use protocol analysis toexplore the bond between conceptual and figural reasoning at two levelsof cognitive operation – that of the design move and that of theargument that is its building block. We conclude that the two modes ofreasoning are equi-present in designing; they describe a binary systemcharacterized by high frequency shifts between figure and concept.
