summary The paper documents the development of algor thms (released as Grasshopper plugin Chingree) to generate 2D compositions and 3D embodiments inspired from the visual ethos of Mondrian's neo-plastic compositions. Based on the empirical analysis of the compositions; rectangles are sub-divided with lines parallel to x and y axes, folllowed by selection of few of the sub-divisions for colouring. The principles of sub-division and selection are applied in 3D. Volumes are sub-divided with planes parallel to xy, yz and zx planes. Few of the sub- divisions are selected to be present (analogous to colouring in 2D). Shape gr mmar is used to control sub-division.

summary In the behavior of human cognition, Schank, a cognitive researcher, claims that human frequently rely on past experience to solve new problems. The information and knowledge of well-trained designers was obtained from fundamental training courses in schools, from everyday experience, and importantly from several design cases. Acquiring knowledge by seeing cases is the most important activity in the design process. But, there are no related works from cognitive view to discuss what and how designers see from instances. Thus, this paper attempts to investigate what designers can see as some meaningful elements from instances, what relationships are among elements and knowledge which retrieved from designers’ long-term memory, and how new obtained knowledge influences the design outcomes.

summary This project presents computational design and fabrication methods for locating standard steel reinforcement within 3D printed water-soluble PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) molds to create non-standard concrete columns. Previous methods from “Melting: Augmenting Concrete Columns with Water Soluble 3D Printed Formwork” and “Dissolvable 3D Printed Formwork: Exploring Additive Manufacturing for Reinforced Concrete” (Doyle & Hunt 2019) were adapted for larger-scale construction, including the introduction of new hardware, development of custom programming strategies, and updated digital fabrication techniques. Initial research plans included 3D printing continuous PVA formwork with a KUKA Agilus Kr10 R1100 industrial robotic arm. However, COVID-19 university campus closures led to fabrication shifting to the author’s home, and this phase instead relied upon a LulzBot TAZ 6 (build volume of 280 mm x 280 mm x 250 mm) with an HS+ (Hardened Steel) tool head (1.2 mm nozzle diameter). Two methods were developed for this project phase: new 3D printing hardware and custom GCode production. The methods were then evaluated in the fabrication of three non-standard columns designed around five standard reinforcement bars (3/8-inch diameter): Woven, Twisted, Aperture. Each test column was eight inches in diameter (the same size as a standard Sonotube concrete form) and 4 feet tall, approximately half the height of an architecturally scaled 8-foot-tall column. Each column’s form was generated from combining these diameter and height restrictions with the constraints of standard reinforcement placement and minimum concrete coverage. The formwork was then printed, assembled, cast, and then submerged in water to dissolve the molds to reveal the cast concrete. This mold dissolving process limits the applicable scale for the work as it transitions from the research lab to the construction site. Therefore, the final column was placed outside with its mold intact to explore if humidity and water alone can dissolve the PVA formwork in lieu of submersion.

summary Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, offers advantages over traditional construction technologies, increasing material efficiency, fabrication precision, and speed. However, many AM projects in academia and industrial institutions do not comply with building codes. Consequently, they are not considered safe structures for public utilization and have languished as exhibition prototypes. While three discrete scales—micro, mezzo, and macro—are investigated for AM with paste in this paper, structural integrity has been tackled on the mezzo scale to investigate the impact of process parameters on the bond strength between layers in an AM process. Real-world material deposition in a robotic-assisted AM process is subject to environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, the load of upper layers, the pressure of the nozzle on printed layers, etc. Those factors add a secondary geometric characteristic to the printed objects that was missing in the initial digital model. This paper introduces a heuristic workflow for investigating the impacts of three selective process parameters on the bond strength between layers of paste in the robotic-assisted AM of large-scale structures. The workflow includes a method for adding the secondary geometrical characteristic to the initial 3D model by employing X-ray computerized tomography (CT) scanning, digital image processing, and 3D reconstruction. Ultimately, the proposed workflow offers a pattern library that can be used by an architect or artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in automated AM processes to create robust architectural forms.

summary This paper describes the design and fabrication process of an adaptive joint using 3D printed mono-material bistable mechanisms. The proposed joint deforms when external forces are applied, achieving two stable states. An x-shaped microstructure (simul-SLE) is designed for the connection portion of the bistable structure inside the joint. 3D-Printing experiments is conducted to explore the possibility of various forms of simul-SLE, which realize bistable by a single material. The experiment primarily solved two problems, namely the selection of materials and how to make the rigid 3D printed material acquires properties of flexibility and softness. Finally, practical applications are shown to prove the future of this joint.

summary In usual robotic fabrication by 6 axis industrial robot such as KUKA ,ABB and other brands ,the usual robot's 4th ,5th and 6th axis is exactly converge in one point .When this type robot (pieper) is doing movement commands ,setting the degree of 4th axis close to zero is an ideal condition for motion stability ,especially for putting device which connect to tool head on 4th axis arm part.In plastic melting or others print which not cares the rotation angle about the printing direction(the printing direction means the effector's output normal direction vector, KUKA is X axis,ABB is Z axis) ,the optimization of 4th axis technology not only makes printing stable but also makes better quality for printing.The paper introduces a new algorithm to get the analytics solution.The algorithm is clear explained by mathematics and geometry ways. At the end of paper, a grasshopper custom plugin is provided ,which contains this new algorithm ,with this plugin, people can get the optimized target path plane more easily.

summary In this paper, we try to investigate architectural site survey process by conducting experiment and quantitative analysis. 17 student volunteers were asked to practice site survey for a fixed design objective. With site survey process recorded along with sketching and utterance, we adopt protocol analysis and FBS ontology, which are widely used and discussed in design process research, as the basis of our analysis. Since site survey is a preliminary stage of architectural design, it differs from actual design process in many aspects. In this case, we extended the original FBS framework by adding two extra activities- Objective Processor and Subjective Processor- to better describe site survey process.

summary Creativity is always interested in many fields, in particular, creativity and design creativity have many interpretations (Boden, 1991; Gero and Maher, 1992, 1993; Kim, 1990; Sternberg, 1988; Weisberg, 1986). In early conceptual design process, designers used large number of sketches and drawings (Purcell and Gero, 1998). The sketch can inspire the designer to increase the creativity of the designer’s creations(Schenk, 1991; Goldschmidt, 1994; Suwa and Tversky, 1997). The freehand sketches by conventional media have been believed to play important roles in processes of the creative design thinking(Goldschmidt, 1991; Schon and Wiggins, 1992; Goel, 1995; Suwa et al., 2000; Verstijnen et al., 1998; Elsas van and Vergeest, 1998). Recently, there are many researches on inspiration of the design creativity by digital media(Liu, 2001; Sasada, 1999). The digital media have been used to apply the creative activities and that caused the occurrenssce of unexpected discovery in early design processes(Gero and Maher, 1993; Mitchell, 1993; Schmitt, 1994; Gero, 1996, 2000; Coyne and Subrahmanian, 1993; Boden, 1998; Huang, 2001; Chen, 2001; Manolya et al. 1998; Verstijinen et al., 1998; Lynn, 2001). In addition, there are many applications by combination of conventional and digital media in the sketches conceptual process. However, previous works only discussed that the individual media were related to the design creativity. The cognitive research about the application of conceptual sketches design by integrating both conventional and digital media simultaneously is absent.

The significance of digital archive is not simply a collection, but critical for additional research and application. The outcomes of the project pointed out several implications.

summary In recent years, designers have used digital media at various points of the design process, which helps expand architectural possibilities. Digital media has changed not only the architectural style, but also the design process (Lynn, 1999). In earlier times, some researchers of design thinking have looked at how the role of physical models played in traditional design processes (Millon, 1994). However, the design process has been changed when media designers used to adjust from traditional to digital. Therefore, visual thinking and cognitive behavior of designers also change while using physical models in design processes. From the synthesis of the two aforementioned disciplines, we can find that there exists a point of deficiency. That is the cognitive research about designers who use physical models in digital design processes is absent. This is discussed in the current paper.

summary In this paper, we describe Internet and Architecture (i+a), a research and teaching program, startedfour years ago at Harvard Design School, to explore the possibilities that lie in the convergence of aphysical with a virtual architecture. The approach starts with the analysis of everyday verbs and thechanges that occur in the virtualization of everyday situations, and moves on to critically rethinkexisting architectural typologies and develop new architectures that combine physical and virtualcomponents. This paper describes our experiences with the approach in the year 2001-2002. Wepresent samples of design projects as illustrative examples of new architectural typologies thatcombine the physical and virtual, and describe how incorporating technologies for virtual collaborationinto the design process can enhance architectural practice in the broadest sense.

summary Presently, only a small percentage of people in the world typically hire an architect to design and build a home which is tailored to their preference. Besides the architect’s fee, clients also need to wait an interminable time for design and construction. Factory-made prefabricated housing systems tried to solve this problem previously. However, most pioneers failed to address the issues of variability and individual needs (Kieran & Timberlake, 2004). Plants closed because they produced more than the market demand, and prefabricated housing provided less flexibility than the traditional stick-built housing. The advanced digital technology makes it possible to communicate design ideas and concepts to others more effectively. The project delivery process leads itself to customization, embodying principles of lean production (Pine, 1993), flexible computer-integrated design interaction with clients, and reduced cycle times; all effecting rapid response between consumers and producers.

summary By collecting and evaluating client’s requirements with web technology, a methodology can be developed that can generate design options based on the client’s needs and available modular components in the market, and simulate the final design before beginning manufacturing. In this proposed model, a process of providing mass-customized prefabricated housing based on computer-aided design and a web-based product configuration system will be presented. How prefabricated housing design can be evolved from a mass repetitive production level to a mass customization level to meet variability and personality is the primary issue to be explored in this research.

summary In Taiwan, the National Science Council (NSC) has launched the “National Digital Archives Program” (NDAP) since 2002. We participated in two projects: “The 3D digital museum of Taiwan city and architecture” and “Digital model database and professional service for Taiwan city and architecture”. The first one attempted to build a virtual museum for Taiwan city and architecture through the past four hundred years. The second one was a value-added project which intended to further apply the digital contents of the previous one. This project was consisted of 3D refined data, digital knowledge database, and architecture professional service. We were responsible for the 3D refined data. As a result, the digital model database included three cities: Hsinchu, Chiayi, and Tainan, as well as sixty-four architecture models. The interactive entertainment platform is an important leisure in our daily life. In general, the interactive entertainment includes five types: arcade game, PC game, on-line game, TV game, and mobile entertainment. This research pays attentions to the arcade game which presents dynamic interactions between machine and users. Following the improvements of design techniques, we have opportunities to experience many arcade games with different purposes, such as drum game, dance game, and fishing simulator. However, we further apply the digital model database to create an interactive entertainment platform for a racing arcade game.

summary For adaptive facades, the dynamic integration of architectural and environmental information is essential but complex, especially for the performance of indoor light environments. This research proposes a new approach that combines computer-aided design methods and machine learning to enhance the efficiency of this process. The first step is to clarify the design factors of adaptive facade, exploring how parameterized typology models perform in simulation. Then interpretable machine learning is used to explain the contribution of adaptive facade parameters to light criteria (DLA, UDI, DGP) and build prediction models for light simulation. Finally, Wallacei X is used for multi-objective optimization, determines the optimal skin options under the corresponding light environment, and establishes the optimal operation model of the adaptive facades against changes in the light environment. This paper provides a reference for designers to decouple the influence of various factors of adaptive facades on the indoor light environment in the early design stage and carry out more efficient adaptive facades design driven by environmental performance.
