title First results in autonomous retrieval of buried objects
source Automation in Construction 4 (2) (1995) pp. 111-123
summary We have developed an autonomous system for the retrieval of buried objects. It is designed to detect, locate and retrieve buried objects. The system is equipped with a surface and a subsurface sensor. The surface sensor is a laser rangefinder used to build the surface model. The subsurface sensor is a ground penetrating radar (GPR) used to detect and locate buried objects. We use an industrial robot equipped with an excavator bucket for automated excavation. Our system uses a "sense and dig cycle" procedure to retrieve buried objects. First, subsurface sensing is used to detect and locate the buried objects. If the object can be reached with one dig, the excavator retrieves it directly. Otherwise a layer of soil above the object is removed and another subsurface scan is made to get a more accurate estimate of the object location. This loop is repeated until the object is retrieved. The paper presents some recent results in sensing and excavation from experiments conducted on our testbed and the specific methods that we use to achieve those results. Such a system has numerous potential applications. They include hazardous waste removal, maintenance of subsurface structure (e.g. gas pipes), construction, and removal of unexploded buried ordnance.

title Graph Visualization and Navigation in Information Visualization : a Survey
source IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, Vol. 6
summary This is a survey on graph visualization and navigation techniques, as used in information visualization. Graphs appear in numerous applications such as web browsing, state-transition diagrams, and data structures. The ability to visualize and to navigate in these potentially large, abstract graphs is often a crucial part of an application. Information visualization has specific requirements, which means that this survey approaches the results of traditional graph drawing from a different perspective.

title The Perception of Architectural Space in Reality, in Virtual Reality, and through Plan and Section Drawings - A case study of the perception of architectural atmosphere
source Kepczynska-Walczak, A, Bialkowski, S (eds.), Computing for a better tomorrow - Proceedings of the 36th eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, Lodz University of Technology, Lodz, Poland, 19-21 September 2018, pp. 735-744
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2018.2.735
summary This paper presents the findings from a comparative study of an architectural space communicated as the space itself and its two different representations, i.e. a virtual reality model and traditional plan and section drawings. Using eye tracking technology in combination with qualitative questionnaires, a case study of an architectural space is investigated in physical reality, a virtual reality 3D BIM model, and finally through representation of the space in plan and section drawings. In this study, the virtual reality scenario seems closer to reality than the experience of the same space experienced through plan and section drawings. There is an overall higher correlation of both the conscious reflections and the less conscious behaviour between the real physical architectural space and the virtual reality space, than there is between the real space and the space communicated through plan and section drawings. We can conclude that the scenario with the best overall size estimations, compared to the actual measures, is the virtual reality scenario. The paper further discusses the future applications of virtual reality in architecture.

summary This paper aims to demonstrate the advantages of working with cutting- edge technologies, such hypermedia, in the teaching of architecture in large universities. The topic hereby dealt with regarding cognitive construction is about stylistic vanguards, specifically Deconstruction and Minimalism, which are two very well-known trends of the last years. The quality leap from analogical towards digital,as well as the construction of knowledge in a path of increasing abstraction. The fact that the student-hypermedia interaction is individual allows the former work in accordance with his or her own personal requirements, in order to successfully achieve goals in didactics This paper includes a framework, an account of analogical teaching experience oriented towards the new technologies, and the on stylistic vanguards.

summary Working in pairs is collective collaboration. The collective intelligence, crowdthinking and its variations are part of today's language. Based on this concept, we propose to fill empty spaces from the current communication of culture from Goverment of Córdoba. There is an information movement and events in conection to crowd. We propose a device, that broadcasts the contents of the hashtag: #quetenemoshoy, making it more popular, and in everyone's range. We set out a collaboration situation, with a concrete proposal, that includes dialogue with its surroundings. Articulating knowledge from different disciplines, between the goverment and the residents. Following neologism from Gutiérrez-Rubí y Freire (2013),we propose will be CITY-CROWD-CREATING.

summary Teaching programming to architects, in academic and professional contexts, occurs in Latin America through self-management, and focused on results, without analyzing the processes and establishing a follow-up to participants, to establish patterns of application. The pointing out of these problems and the proposal of how to make said education sustainable has allowed finding variables specific to the region and to the very same tools and instruments, which are constantly evolving. At the same time, it is proposed after the analysis, that hetero-education (shared learning) itself requires self-education (self-teaching processes) as a complementary process.

source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary Two exhibits made evident that complex shapes generated through scripts are the attention focus of both educators and professionals. These projects did not start with traditional representation conventions (front view, plan and cross section) but with biological, geometrical or mathematical references, where patterns are recurrent. Using scripts it is possible to write and represent possibilities; blogs allow the publication of the results. In this context, a blog was created (2008) to publish methods and subjects extracted from workshops and manuals featuring rhinoscripting. During a year more than 57000 users accessed; the results of this documentation are hereby presented.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.1987.x.k0w
summary The working performance of computers and of numerous online-services today are being decentralized and used in networks. The interpersonal exchange of messages and hence electronic mailflow from one computer to another is gaining an increasing significance with the growth of the numbers of PCs being used. At the same time, new low-cost forms of organization and communications are being created. Message Handling as the term for the exchange of locally independent messages and news goes, is being introduced to the individual working place on a worldwide scale with the powerful PTT-Data Packet Switching Networks and the new communications protocols like the X.400 as well as the public electronic mail servers, which are available via telephone.

title The Description and Theoretical Analysis (using schemas) of PLANNER: A Language for Proving Theorems and Manipulating Models in a Robot
source Massachusetts Institute of Technology
summary PLANNER is a language for proving theorems and manipulating models in a robot. The language is built out of a number of problem solving primitives together with a hierarchical control structure. Statements can be asserted and perhaps later withdrawn as the state of the world changes. Conclusions can be drawn from these various changes in state. Goals can be established and dismissed when they are satisfied. The deductive system of PLANNER is subordinate to the hierarchical control structure in order to make the language efficient. The use of a general purpose matching language makes the deductive system more powerful.

title Reclaiming site analysis from co-sensing to co-ideation: A collective cartography strategy and tactical trajectories
source International Journal of Architectural Computing 2024, Vol. 22 - no. 2, 1-19
summary This study introduces a collective cartography strategy for analyzing complex urban spaces. It was applied during a 7-day Erasmus + workshop with 46 participants from universities in Spain, Turkey, Portugal, and Poland, representing various backgrounds such as urban planning, architecture, heritage, information technologies, and tourism. The workshop’s objective was to identify critical urban issues and generate sustainable and multisensory urban space concepts. The impact of this strategy, from co-sensing to coideation, was evaluated by its influence on collaboration and the development of self-generated tactics during the process. Within this context, we explored various group tactics, including multisensor data collection, multi-criteria-based analysis, crowdsourcing for site diagnosis, and distributed collaboration to enhance diverse perspectives and narratives. The findings, outputs, and reflections from participants indicate highly interactive, productive, and inclusive co-creation settings. These were facilitated through a web-based virtual collective space (Doyoucity) and a crowdsourcing mobile app for on-site data collection and analysis (Fulcrum).

summary All over the world, students and teachers in architecture have been developing learning materials in various digital formats. Unfortunately, the material is not shared across school boundaries, and thus not exploited to its full extent. Mostly, technical and organisational limitations hamper the sharing and exchange of learning material, although this would benefit the global community of students and teachers in architecture. This paper presents a recently launched EU-initiative called MACE—Metadata for Architectural Contents in Europe—which aims at creating a European-wide space for the electronic descriptions of architectural information to be used in architectural education. The idea is to exchange and enhance the metadata of as many as possible digital repositories in order to allow searches by distant partners. Real access conditions to the data still remain those specific for each repository. By describing and discussing this initiative in its early stage, the paper aims to benefit from the exchange of ideas and experiences with similar initiatives, and to trigger the interest of new repository owners to join MACE.

summary Today, everything is entertainment: the free time, the leisure and the mediatic and hypermediatic consumption. The incursion in the era of the service and the information, has given foot to the configuration of cultural industries whose market is centered in symbolic consumption and the mediation carried out by the intercultural hybridation derived from the capitalist tendency to expand the market of intangible goods. This symbolic market has given to origin the birth of certain tendencies and generations that are transforming, in a radical way, the mass media.

title Digital Sensations: Space, Identity, and Embodiment in Virtual Reality
source University of Minnesota Press, Minneapolis, Minnesota
summary Virtual reality is in the news and in the movies, on TV and in the air. Why is the technology -- or the idea -- so prevalent precisely now? What does it mean -- what does it do -- to us? Digital Sensations looks closely at the ways representational forms generated by communication technologies -- especially digital/optical virtual technologies -- affect the "lived" world. Virtual reality, or VR, is a technological reproduction of the process of perceiving the real; yet that process is "filtered" through the social realities and embedded cultural assumptions about human bodies, perception, and space held by the technology's creators. Through critical histories of the technology -- of vision, light, space, and embodiment -- Ken Hillis traces the various and often contradictory intellectual and metaphysical impulses behind the Western transcendental wish to achieve an ever more perfect copy of the real. Because virtual technologies are new, these histories also address the often unintended and underconsidered consequences -- such as alienating new forms of surveillance and commodification -- flowing from their rapid dissemination. Current and proposed virtual technologies reflect a Western desire to escape the body Hillis says. Exploring topics from VR and other, earlier visual technologies, Hillis's penetrating perspective on the cultural power of place and space broadens our view of the interplay between social relations and technology.

title CAAD meets digital photogrammetry: modelling _weak forms_ for computer measurement
source Automation in Construction 5 (3) (1996) pp. 171-183
summary The integration of state-of-the-art photogrammetric methods with the capabilities of CAAD has great potential for a variety of architectural applications. This paper describes the current status of an ongoing research project which aims to develop an easy to use tool for the photogrammetric generation of accurate, reliable and well structured 3D CAAD models of architectural objects. The project adresses the whole range of issues that arise from the digital image acquisition to the data processing, the data integration between photogrammetry and CAAD and the architectural structuring of the geometric data. While also giving a brief overview of the project, the paper concentrates on one central aspect of the system: a method to model what we will define as 'weak forms' as the basis for qualitatively controlled computer measurement.
