title Computational Aesthetics of Low Poly: [Re]Configuration of Form

summary Low-poly modeling as an emerging field in visual arts, product design and architecture has an essential effect both on the designer's and the viewer/user's experience. It has an advanced abstraction ability over the reconfiguration of form. This paper examines the visual features of low-poly form in terms of the computability of its aesthetics. A visual feature classification is made by referencing George David Birkhoff's aesthetic measure theory based on the complexity and order relationship. Topo[i]wall installation has been examined as a case study during the analysis. The relationship between form, computation, aesthetics and human-computer interaction are elaborated according to the results. It has been observed that low poly modeling offers a variation set in terms of compositional features, which are proportion, balance, vertical and horizontal network system while protecting its unity through the analysis of the generated computational model.

title Quantification of Effective Temporal Exposure to Daylight Illuminance Levels in Healthcare Settings

summary The purpose of this study is the quantification of the exposure of occupants to daylight illuminance levels. The case study is the typical floor of a patient tower occupied by nurses in twelve hours shifts, from 7 am to 7 pm. Significant evidence exists regarding the positive impact of access to daylight on staff outcomes in healthcare facilities in terms of reduction of stress, absenteeism, medication errors, and burn outs. However, the standard daylight simulation methods evaluate the building and do not capture the dynamic nature of people’s behavior while moving through the space. The proposed approach combines agent-based simulation and daylight performance analysis to compute the occupants’ exposure to daylight levels throughout the year. The results show the discrepancies between building-centric and human-centric types of analysis and the contribution of dynamic simulation methods to design occupancy schedules to warranty equitable access to daylight to building occupants.

summary In the midst of a global pandemic crisis, this proposal seeks to solve a need for a synchronous and multi-user interactive virtual environment for the exhibition of artworks as part of an international illustrators encounter. This research shows a UX+XR design strategy based on UX methodology and the inclusion of parametric design for MUVEs that is framed in a UX+XR prototype for the exhibition, virtual-meeting place, and pedagogical experiential approach directed to defined users. The result, a virtual space named “Ilustremos” (let's illustrate) is created to promote creativity, celebrate art, create community and multidisciplinary collaboration.

summary Combining Biomimicry and Parametric Design, this research aims to detail the design process of an ephemeral pavilion which uses the method Biomimicry Design Lens, proposed by Biomimicry 3.8. The experiments developed in this paper followed the method’s diagram insights and it was guided by the ‘Biology for Design’ diagram in a non-sequential order in the design process. The pavilion is located in the Serpentine Gallery, and it was bio-inspired by the ribs of the inferior face of the Victoria amazonica leaf, a natural morphological structure that was translated into a quadrangular grid characteristic of the waffle structure. Finally, the parametric implementation allowed the development of several morphological experiments.

title University Campus Walkability Index Supported by Digital Databases

summary Studies on the university campus commonly consider its spatial particularities in comparison to the city. However, the university debate about mobility also addresses urban-related challenges, like those posed by the dependence on vehicles and incentives for active mobility. Considering internal mobility, this work explores Wi-Fi connections from a Brazilian public university to trace community trajectories and population density on campus. We adopted objective data from the built environment for the application of a walkability index. The procedures were performed using GIS and the results shared for visualization in the Kepler.gl application. The results include walkability indices for different campus sectors. The discussion focuses on the potential use of the index in promoting a more integrated and less automobile-dependent campus.

summary The vast majority of children's environments are planned and organized considering the perceptions of adults. Co-design is an important tool for adding users to design process. The objective of this work is to include children in the design process of a Pocket Park, using methods and tools to support Co-design. The work was structured based on literature review, Focus Group, Culture Maker, Digital Fabrication and Prototyping. Two online synchronous workshops were held with 23 students and 2 primary school teachers. A survey indicated that the collaborative project has a great contribution in the design process of urban spaces. Promotes assertive communication between those involved, welcoming their ideas in a flexible way. It also indicates that Digital Fabrication and Prototyping equipment are important vehicles in the construction of objects that facilitate communication during the design process, such as toys present in children's daily lives. Finally, there was a rich exchange of information and learning during the design process.

summary The Co-design method has great relevance in the inclusion of different classes of users in the Design Process (DP), such as Visually Impaired People (PwDS) and children. This work indicates results of three Co-design dynamics. Focus Group, guided tour, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and workshops were carried out, as strategies for the inclusion of different users in the DP. The process of designing an inclusive signage board for PwDS is presented. Next, the project of inclusive playgrounds for visually impaired children. Finally, an activity carried out with basic education students, combining new technologies in the child's learning process. Participants were encouraged to express their knowledge through different tools that adapted to their reality. The results show the importance of including different methods, tools and resources to support the DP. In addition, Digital Fabrication and Prototyping are techniques that enhance Co-design, as they act as congratulators for communication between the designer and users.

summary The paper aims to analyse the parameters for dimensioning the urban block in the context of the ongoing debate over Rio de Janeiro's new Master Plan (PLC N°44/2021). The analysis focuses on three main points: (1) the definition of the block, (2) the discrepancies found in this regard in the land parcelling system, and (3) the limitations that gated communities impose on the parameterisation of the block. The paper briefly relates the role of the master plan in Brazilian urban policy. Next, it points out the arguments that emerged during the public hearings over the new proposed master plan regarding block sizing. Then, it analyses Rio's urban law framework and the literature regarding the city's road network, cul-de-sac structures and gated communities, supported by the blocks and the streets georeferenced maps available at the Rio's Municipality and the Open Street Maps platform. Finally, it discusses the analysis outcomes with the arguments that emerged during the public hearings regarding block sizing.

summary This article aims to identify and analyze inductive aspects (those which go from particular instances to the general configuration) present in ideation phases of digital design projects (such as apps, websites and tools for companies’ internal communications), with special emphasis on how induction occurs in creative processes. Using a qualitative methodological approach, the analysis is based on in-depth, semi-structured interviews with digital designers, on a literature review on the subjects of creativity and classic design method, as well as on a design documentary. Research findings suggest the importance of combining the use of verbal and visual communication resources in group dynamics; the need for designers to be highly proficient in the tools and techniques used while generating new alternatives, regardless of their physical/analogical or virtual/digital nature; and to allocate, whenever possible, ample time to explore ideas in order to push the limits of each project being developed.

title COVID-19 and the City: An Analysis of the Correlation between Urban and Social Factors and COVID-19 in Fortaleza, Brazil

summary The COVID-19 pandemic has been the biggest sanitary crisis humanity has ever faced, the virus has contaminated 662.717.929 people worldwide and killed 6.701.270 people. However, these numbers were not distributed equally at international, national or urban scale. In Fortaleza, Brazil, city studied in this paper, data from 2021 and 2022 epidemiologic reports suggest a contamination pattern that starts in neighborhoods with higher Human Development Index (HDI) and then goes to lower HDI neighborhoods, however, throughout all of this cycle, low HDI neighborhoods tend to have a higher lethality rate. These facts raised the hypothesis that those neighborhoods have specific urban and social factors that affect the capacity to respond and prevent COVID-19. The main objective of this paper is to identify the correlation of some urban and social factors with COVID-19 data. To achieve that, the authors selected seven variables (access to water rate, literacy rate, waste collection rate, population density, access to electric energy rate, sanitation rate and average monthly income) to correlate with four COVID- 19 indicators (total number of cases, total number of deaths, contamination rate and lethality rate). For this, it was chosen to apply Spearman’s correlation coefficient and for the calculation the statistical software Jamovi was used. The results show that the literacy rate, the access to electric energy rate and average monthly income have a positive correlation with the contamination rate, however these same variables have a negative correlation with the lethality rate.

summary COVID-19 was a sanitary crisis of international impact. However, its effects weren’t experienced equally. In Fortaleza, epidemiological reports (2021;2022) point to different infection patterns between high Human Development Index (HDI) and low HDI neighborhoods, which surfaced the hypothesis that certain territories’ characteristics could correlate to COVID-19 data. This article describes a phase of a three-phase research, whose objective is to identify correlations between urban and demographic (UD) data to COVID-19 data. To this, a literature review was done to select seven UD variables and four COVID-19 ones, then, Spearman’s correlation was applied in four pandemic time frames (TF). Results show that literacy rates, monthly income and energy have either low or moderate positive correlations with contamination rates in most TF. However, they’ve shown low or moderate correlations with lethality rates in three TF. Population density showed low positive correlations to either lethality rates or total number of deaths in three TF.

summary Contemporary agent-based pedestrian simulations offer great potential to evaluate architectural and urban design proposals in terms of medical risks, crowd safety, and visitor comfort. Nevertheless, due to their relative computational heaviness and complicated input-parameters, pedestrian simulations are not employed during the design process commonly. Simulation results significantly impact planning decisions, especially when they are already available in the early design phases. This paper analyzes the requirements of pedestrian simulations for early planning stages, such as seamless integration into iterative and collaborative design processes, interactivity, and appropriate visualization of results. For this purpose, we combine two existing projects: a high-accuracy pedestrian simulation and the CDP//Collaborative Design Platform. To adapt the simulation method to the requirements of early planning stages, we investigate interactions that blend intuitively with the design process and enable multiple users to interact simultaneously. We simplify simulations input parameters to match the level of detail of the early design phases. The simulation model is adapted to facilitate continuous and spontaneous interactions. Furthermore, we develop visualization techniques to support initial design negotiations and present strategies for compensating computation time and giving constant feedback to a dynamic design process.

summary Microalgae are a sustainable source of unique properties with potential for various applications. Biofuel production has led to the use of them as bioreactors on an architectural scale. Most of these efforts cannot manage the output due to the lack of intelligent control and monitoring over environmental micro-scale growth. This research presents the possibility of control and monitoring over the bio-energy retrieved through micro-organisms in bio-reactors, specifically the growth environments computation. To achieve monitoring, three dimensions of the medium culture captured by cameras, and with the advantage of image processing, the picture frames pixel values measured. In this process, we use the Python OpenCV Library as an image processing reference. Finally, a specifically developed algorithm analyses the calculated 3d-matrix. By changing the environmental parameters, control happens by directly recognizing changes in density and outputs. This researchs computational process has proposed a novel approach for controlling particle-based environments to reach the desired functions of microorganisms, This approach can use in a wide range of cases as a method.

summary Children's playgrounds or also called playgrounds are open spaces, the basis for children's recreation. Important for the inclusion and mobility of visually impaired children in the social environment, through inclusive urban facilities that stimulate new experiences for their cognitive development. In this context, the use of Co-design with visually impaired people, in the design processes of children's playgrounds, assumes an importance for an inclusive project based on their experiences. Thus, it aimed to promote a project together, to provide more comfort and safety to users. It presents as main results as better colors, materials and types of toys for children with visual impairment to be competent in a playground including from the application of methods, tools and resources in the Co-design process.

summary Digital fabrication technologies have been developing rapidly; the number of shapes that can be created in different design sectors by this technology has grown exponentially and in the jewelry field it’s not different. Jewelry is an old and constantly evolving craft and the digital manufacturing was first incorporated into it as a form of prototyping and problem solving, but today there are many creative uses for it. This article presents data on some productive practices, prioritizing information on learning, knowledge domain and access to digital fabrication technologies. We discuss the ways which the technology is appropriated in a specific socio-productive context of design jewelry production located in Northeastern Brazil. The study identifies the techniques and technologies effectively appropriated by the surveyed audience and discusses the conditions of these appropriations.

summary There is a variety of BIM brands present in the Latin American market, there are several questions about their performance in the Spanish language. BIM software companies with a presence in Latin America were appointed to a series of structured and sequenced workshop. At the end of each talk, a specialized audience responded to a series of structured surveys on both theoretical and practical aspects of the software presented. The demonstration consisted of two areas: one theoretical and one practical. The theory presented relevant historical attributes, brand visibility data and some known examples of its use. In the practical part, a live demonstration of the use of the basic tools and functions of the interface was requested. It was derived that: The companies fulfilled the expectation on the agenda in a dissimilar way, the responses to the surveys revealed a similar performance in general terms (modeling, prices), the workshops showed significant differences in theoretical aspects such as known examples, certification. There is a need to advance in the dissemination of the performance of the different BIM brands in the AEC industry in Latin America, the level of individual experience strongly influences the evaluation of the software, the user's profile and the type of project will determine the software to use.

summary On-site construction is one of the main research directions of robot construction. Due to the complex and everchanging construction environment on the site, traditional offline programming and simple conditional programming cannot meet the needs of robot on-site construction at all. Realtime adjustment of the robot's operating program for the real-time situation in the field is the appropriate solution. Therefore, the real-time communication and control of robots has become a key issue for robot on-site construction. This article discusses in turn the way of robot offline program control through EthernetKRL and grasshopper. A remote real-time communication and control method for an on-site construction robot is studied, and the application of the method in the on-site construction process of an actual robot is introduced with the Wuzhen coffee kiosk project as an example. Based on the above methods, remote real-time monitoring of the construction robot on site can be realized, which provides a reference for the actual engineering application of the construction robot on site.

summary With the increase in labor costs, more and more robot constructions appear in building construction and spatial structure fabrication. There are many robots working on large-scale objects. When the reach range of the robot cannot meet the requirements, so an external axis is needed. The external axis is usually a linear motion device, which can significantly increase the operating range of the robotic arm. In actual construction, it is also widely used. This article introduces a 3d printing coffee bar project. Because this project is of a large scale and needs to be printed at one time, the XYZ external axis was used in this project to complete the task. Inspired by this project, this article study several methods of optimizing the motion of external axes in large-scale construction. Finally, we chose to use the Fourier series as the most suitable method to optimize the printing path and programed this method as a component of FUROBOT for more convenient use. This article explains the principle of this method in detail. Finally, this article uses a 3D printing example to illustrate the precautions in actual use.

summary The goal of the research described in this paper is to address climate change by promoting the production of renewable energy in building envelopes, which are exposed to solar radiation. It proposes an energy-based design paradigm, where energy processes shape the building form, and a digital design system for building envelopes that considers the trajectory of sunrays. The goal is to create envelopes that are efficient in harvesting solar energy, enabling them to produce the electricity that buildings consume. To operationalize the proposed digital design system, a building envelope grammar is developed and implemented in a software called LIDIA to be used by architects in design process to generate solutions with improved energy production performance. The efficiency of the resulting solutions, the effectiveness of LIDIA and, therefore, the validity of the proposed paradigm, is demonstrated with the design of envelope solutions for single family houses.

summary In usual robotic fabrication by 6-axis industrial robots such as KUKA, ABB, and other brands, the usual robot’s 4th, 5th, and 6th axis is exactly converged in one point. When this type robot (pieper) is doing movement commands, setting the degree of 4th axis close to zero is an ideal condition for motion stability, especially for putting device which connects to tool head on 4th axis arm part. In plastic melting or others print which not cares the rotation angle about the printing direction (the printing direction means the effector’s output normal direction vector, KUKA is X axis, ABB is Z axis), the optimization of 4th axis technology not only makes printing stable but also makes better quality for printing. The paper introduces a new algorithm to get the analytics solution. The algorithm is clearly explained by mathematics and geometry ways. At the end of the paper, a grasshopper custom plugin is provided, which contains this new algorithm, with this plugin, people can get the optimized target path plane more easily.
