summary ZipShape is a universal method to fabricate single curved panels from any plain material without molds. The system uses two individually slotted panels that interlock when bent to the predefined curvature. As non-radial curves require individual teeth geometry, the method makes use of automated detailing with corresponding algorithms. ZipShape is a fusion of information processing and material processing based on comparatively simple software technology and standard workshop machinery. With help of case studies, this paper evaluates the method’s claim to be a variable and feasible solution for the realization of non-planar shape.

summary The paper discusses a 1:1 student workshop on digital sheet metal fabrication organized in collaboration between ETH Zurich and the City of Zurich in 2005 and 2006. During the workshop a structure of fifteen sheet metal schoolyard roofs was designed, produced, and constructed by the participating students. The workshop was set up to explore how current academic topics such as CAD/CAM, digital fabrication with minimal tolerance, and design optimization with genetic algorithms could be incorporated in a permanent structure with legal building standards and a professional construction sequence.

summary More than the half of world population live in urban areas, and there will be an important need to densify cities. Urban densification will lead to cities with higher level of obstruction due to new surrounding buildings compromising daylight, energy consumption, view out, solar access among others sustainability aspects, which are often in conflict during renovation and early design stages of urban areas. There are novel fast design workflows based on prediction formulas that do not rely on the traditional and time-consuming approach based on daylight/thermal modelling-simulation. The main aim of this 7-hours workshop celebrated within the RIS23 international conference is to teach young designers how to use a novel urban densification method based on prediction formulas implemented as Grasshopper plug-ins in Rhinoceros. This paper describes the motivations of this workshop, a brief explanation of the design workflow taught and the different densification strategies proposed by each participant, highlighting their pros and cons as well as feedback of the design workflow itself.

summary As a result of reviewing existing research in the field of public participation, an on-line collaborative design system can be broken down into the following four sub-systems : the planning objectives system, the discussion system,the proposals system and the design game system. Using these systems, participants can exchange their ideas and concepts, experience the present situation and give their opinions on an interactive web site. Furthermore, in the design game system, the participants can design their park plan according to their preferences and save their design to a server database. Other participants can then access the database to review another participant’s design for purposes of comparing and getting consensus. In order to evaluate our demonstration system, we carried out anexperiment using the design game in Yamanoue community where a park project was scheduled by the local government of the area. Through the participation of the residents and university students, we were able to analyze the design process of the park design workshop in an Internet environment. In particular we were able to examine the exchanging of participates’ ideas, the process they all used in creating VRML worlds of their park design and the effectiveness of VRML for plan presentation.

summary The study reports on the results of a one-day workshop held during the RIS23 conference. The proposed exercise concerns the design and construction process of a temporary architecture optimized on solar parameters for the climatic adaptation of urbanized and natural open spaces. The morphogenesis is obtained on the data of solar vectors in relation to climatic comfort and the shadow optimization. Rhino / Grasshopper / Ladybug are the adopted software. The process results in 1/30 scale cardboard models customized on the climatic data of three locations. Shade analysis of the models by Heliodon concludes the workshop.

summary In most of Indonesian traditional architecture, are seen using decorative ornaments on its building skin. Nowadays those traditional decorative ornaments are no longer used because it is considered old-fashioned and have no technical function that does not match the design of modern buildings, so the traditional characteristics and locality of the building is lost. This paper offers a development of the building skin that aims to revive a new expression of traditional decorative elements by applying digital technology as well as having an adaptive function. Most of the adaptive building skin uses kinetic techniques in order to make its formation transformable. This paper proposes a camshaft mechanism system to transform the pattern of traditional ornament that uses pre-programmed analysis data of environmental changes to parametrically drive the number of rotation phase and length of nose (Lobe Lift) that generates the shape of camshaft. Furthermore, this shapes drives the transformation of the basic pattern. In conclusion, this paper has developed a prototypical tool that facilitates the new approach to kinetic decorative ornaments on building skin.

summary This paper describes the challenges and approaches to introduce computational thinking to a large and diverse group of architecture students during an international workshop with 300 students from different cultural backgrounds and educational levels, also integrating a diverse group of tutors whose computational expertise varied extremely. The approach suggested articulating a design task which enforced computational thinking but enabled different levels of engagement with the computer as a tool. Hypothetically this would allow all participants to engage with the computational thinking agenda regardless their computational affinity even whilst applying analogue methods. Besides the intercultural experience the workshop was successful in exposing a large group of students and tutors to the concepts of computational design whilst accommodating different learning preferences and engagement with the computer as a device.

summary It is the thesis of this paper, that the application of a parametric design approach to urban design has great potentials for improving the systematic testing and subsequent argumentation for urban design proposals. Parametric design has so far mainly been applied to engineering. However, the ‘components’ constituting an urban design also share similarities that may be defined parametrically. Aspects such as density, use, mix, form, space, and typology may all be defined parametrically. By doing so, it is possible to not only perform a systematic de-sign process, but also to evaluate the pros and cons of scenarios with different parametric settings. On the basis of a theoretical discussion, followed by a case study in the form of a student workshop, the paper will discuss the nature and scope of parametric urban design, draw some preliminary conclusions, and outline some possible perspectives for the development of parametric urban design.

summary This paper introduces the pedagogic experience of a course in the Visual Arts Bachelor Degree Program offered by the Facultad de Arquitectura Diseño y Urbanismo at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral, in Santa Fe, Argentina. The class was taught using a combination of Present and Semi-Present attendance through the Multimedia Center of Distance Education (CEMED), and with the support of the Multimedia and Didactic Device Laboratory for the Education (LIDEM), belonging to the said university and school. The workshop dealt with the integration of Digital Media into the Artistic-Creative and Teaching-Learning processes, Despite the lack of electronic equipment of last generation and in the necessary quantity, we achieved interesting and successful results that are relevant to this congress' topics.

summary This work is based on the recognition that there will always be a need for different representations of the same entity, albeit a building or building part, a shape or other complex attribute. Different representations support different sets of operations with varying efficiencies. Given our expectation that such multiple representations will always exist, there is a need, formally, to define the relations between alternative representations, in order to support translation and identify where exact translation is or is not possible, and to define the coverage of different representations. A method for the analysis of representations is developed, which is applied to four different solid modeling representations.

summary This work is the result of a postgraduate thesis done at the chair for Architecture and CAAD at the ETH in Zurich Switzerland. It proposes a prototype for a three-dimensional modelling tool in a networked environment. The work is composed of two distinct parts. (1) A modeling tool to create three-dimensional objects in an intuitive and interactive manner. (2) A database component to store and retrieve the objects. This modeller has been implemented for the first time in a design course, where students where using the modeller to sketch and interact within a large group to formulate aspects of their design. The Paper focuses on the modeller and on the experience from a one week workshop.1. Modelling Tool. The modeling tool operates in two different modes: (A). Composing cubic forms within a limited cubic space. (B). Deforming the composition of boxes by means of their interaction with a separate volume. For the composition of cubes, the user has to drag a cube with the mouse to continue placing cubes in space. Furthermore, he can move and delete the placed cubes. Simple and complex objects can be created this way, in an easy and intuitive manner. For the second mode, the forms are generated by intersecting a volume with an object created previously in the first mode. The volume can be scaled and moved. The part of the existing object located outside the volume remains unchanged, while the part that lies inside it is transformed in the same way as the volume. Complex forms can be created in this way with simple transformations. 2. Database Storage and Retrieval.The created objects can be stored in a database. Other users can access the objects stored in the database and continue working on them in the same modeling environment. There are two ways to interact with objects from the database. On one side it is possible to substitute the composition of cubes, and keep the distorted framestructure of the currently active object unchanged. On the other side it is possible to initiate a morphing process between the currently active framestructure and the framestructure of an object from the database. This process can be stopped at any time. It is always possible to switch back in the modeling modus and continue work on the object.3. Workshop at the the School of Design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.A Group of over 100 students were using the tool in a second year design course. The tool has been implemented as part of a workshop in the second half of the design studio. The workshop lasted for one week in which a collective dataset of over 1000 models has been created by the students. Afterwards, a possibility was given to the students to retrieve models from the database and to process them in different software packages or have them physically built by a 3D printer, and then continue working on the physical model.

summary The paper discusses the methodology, educational process and design outcome of the studio course "Furniture Design with Digital Media: From Design To Production" which took place at International Hellenic University in Thessaloniki, Greece. 20 students and young professionals participated in the course working in teams to produce a series of models which would later develop into a full-scale furniture piece. The workshop aimed to offer an experiential learning opportunity, showcasing the entire digital workflow employed for furniture design, from design to production. The design methodology employed digital design strategies, linked with material constraints, optimization and adaptation of the design for digital fabrication equipment. This educational experiment led to the production of a full-scale furniture prototype which was digitally fabricated and is currently on exhibit at the premises of the International Hellenic University in Thessaloniki.

keywords This paper presents design research on ancient Greek technological achievements and their reinterpretation in the contemporary world. The research involved the study of ancient greek technology and its respective digital representation and led to a semester-long design studio within the product design curriculum at the International Hellenic University. The students would study the morphology of ancient Greek technological devices through their 3D reconstruction and prototyping. The paper will present the results of the aforementioned design studio, commenting on the methodology, the learning theories adopted and the learning outcomes.
