summary In the field of design the pen-based system is a newly developed computer interface that provides the designer with the convenience of a pen in freehand sketches. But these pen-based systems only focus on an interface familiar to the designers and the application of the hardware and software that go with it, treating the pen only as a mouse-like input device. As pen and pad are devices for the pen-based system, the hope is that they can be endowed with more intelligent characteristics to let them interact with designer’s gestures and become a creative source for the designers, while simultaneously preventing the design fixation encountered by designers during design process. This research utilizes the unintentional hand gestures made by designers, such as the designer’s grip of the pen or movement involved in playing with the pen, putting it down, knocking it, twisting it or shaking it, during the thinking process or when running into a design fixation. From the interaction between the pen and the pad, certain actions may be generated to stimulate the designer’s thinking process. This research uses a neural network as the main learning mechanism for the eventual development of a prototype of a pen-based drawing system that provides timely visual stimulation: a G Pen system.

summary Freehand sketch is the most critical stage in the design process. The importance of the freehand sketch is in its ability to freely represent various projections of ambiguous drawing using a convenience tool, pen-and-paper. Recently, pen-based system which developed attempted to use pen as an input device, allowing sketches to be freely drawn on computers. However, as far as the various drawing projections, such as diagram, symbol, plan, elevation, section, perspective, etc., how are they interrelated to a designer’s cognitive behavior? Different media have different abilities to represent projections. What’s the difference of design cognitive behavior between conventional pen-and paper and pen-based system in view of both using a pen as a design medium? This research proceeds a think-aloud protocol analysis to present an analysis and discussion. Research results show that there is a relationship of gradual embodiment, mutually complementary, going from a whole to being dissected into sections between the different projections. Moreover, pen-based system is more than a pen, it allows designer to inspect a 3-D view during the sketching stage. This gives the designer more opportunities during the sketching stage to conduct the design thinking process based on the ambiguous 2-D projections and the more concrete 3-D images, as well as more opportunities for visual feedback

summary In earlier researches on freehand sketching, the cognitive behavior of designers was studied. In recent years, some researchers began to look into this area from the design media aspect. The pen-based system, developed by Gross, Landay and other researchers, used the pen as an input device, allowing sketches to be freely drawn in a computer environment. The importance of the freehand sketch lies in its ability to freely represent various drawing projections using ambiguous sketches. However, as for the various drawing projections, such as diagrams, symbols, plans, elevations, sections, perspectives, etc., how are they interrelated to a designer’s thinking process and the cognitive behavior? Different media have different abilities to represent different projections. Would they affect the designer’s design thinking as well? Targeting different media, i.e., conventional freehand sketches vs. the computer pen-based system, this research uses case studies and think-aloud protocol analysis to present an analysis and discussion. summary This research develops Presence Stickers, the capacitive sensing module that can be easily affixed to the existing space element surfaces (such as a wall, door, stairs), and daily objects or home furniture (such as a chair, cabinet, table, sofa, etc.). These 30*30 cm Presence Stickers can actively sense people‚s physical behaviors and body movements in spaces. From the preliminary analysis of observing the 80-year-old elderly subject‚s daily activities, the movement trajectory of the ‚Move-Stop‚ pattern is found. There will be a Touch (T) and Touchless (TL) relationship between the body and the space elements or objects. Furthermore, the touchless, or non-contact, intimate relationship can also be divided into two types: 1. The body that ‚Passes by‚ (P) the spatial elements or objects, and 2. The body that ‚Stays‚ (S) in front of the object and performs activities. These three types of the intimate relationship between bodies and objects, i.e., T, TL-P, and TL-S, were used as the main sensing conditions to develop the Presence Stickers sensor module. We affixed 8 Presence Stickers on 9 objects in six spaces and finally, the life pattern can be analyzed and the sensors provide the customized intelligent application function for the elderly.

summary This research develops a robotic arm-controlled wax material fluidity shape/form-making system that combines AI image recognition and remote control capabilities. AI image recognition is used to capture the designer's hand gestures or movements as an intuitive input method for controlling shape forming. It gives the designer active control of the desired model shape through the temperature, rotation, and movement controls in the process of phase change of wax materials. The system has the additional advantage of remote control, allowing designers to create wax models remotely through intuitive gesture-controlled interactions. This advantage will become a new method of the digital co-creation process.

summary This study explores the integration of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content (AIGC) in design processes, focusing on the ideation phase. Utilizing in-depth interviews with experienced designers and an experimental approach with novices, it compares AIGC tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney and Copilot with traditional sketching methods. The findings reveal two distinct operational patterns in AIGC utilization: a subtractive method of refining AI outputs and an additive method of evolving design through AI suggestions. Experienced designers view AIGC as a powerful aid for creative ideation, while novices prefer familiar hand-drawing methods. The study proposes a "Seeing-Instructing-Seeing" model, adapting Schön's reflective practice model, to incorporate the collaborative dynamic between designers and AI, marking a shift from manual to intellectual labor in design ideation. This represents a paradigm shift in design methodologies, suggesting a future of co-creative partnerships between designers and AI tools.

summary The recent convergence of computational design and digital fabrication has made new forms of architectural materialization possible. A workshop conducted at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology investigated how differentiated lightweight metal structures may be designed and fabricated under these new conditions. The workshop aim was to complete three such structures; each one is aggregated from aluminum profiles that are robotically assembled according to computationally driven geometric logics. The key challenge was to enable participants, assumed to lack programming and robotic fabrication experience, to design and construct their structures within imposed time constraints. This paper describes the subsequent development of accessible computational design tools and a robust robotic fabrication method for the workshop, and highlights the key decisions taken with their implementation. The workshop results are discussed and the design tools evaluated with respect to them. The paper concludes by recommending an approach to developing computational design tools which emphasizes the importance of usability and integration with the fabrication process.

summary The term “robot” was born from a play written almost a century ago. Today robotic fabrication has become an emerging topic in architectural research. As architects work with these technologies, they are challenged with writing a different kind of play: here robots are the actors and the physical materialization of a design is their performance. However current Computer Aided Design (CAD) packages do not provide native robot programming functionalities which architects require to plan and orchestrate these fabrication process. To address this limitation, a Python library for robot programming is written. It is referenced by a toolkit of custom components developed to extend a graphical programming environment commonly used for architectural design. The empirical development of these software tools takes place in the context of a design studio investigating the subject of the high rise. The tools are tested in a workflow that involves the digital design and scaled robotic fabrication of high-rise housing. This paper discusses the considerations underlying the toolkit’s design, the outcomes of its use in the studio, and its impact on the creative design process.

title Shape Exploration in Design: Formalising and Supporting a Transformational Process

summary The process of sketching can support the sort of transformational thinking that is seen as essential for the interpretation and reinterpretation of ideas in innovative design. Such transformational thinking, however, is not yet well supported by computer-aided design systems. In this paper, outcomes of experimental investigations into the mechanics of sketching are described, in particular those employed by practicing architects and industrial designers as they responded to a series of conceptual design tasks. Analyses of the experimental data suggest that the interactions of designers with their sketches can be formalised according to a finite number of generalised shape rules. A set of shape rules, formalising the reinterpretation and transformations of shapes, e.g. through deformation or restructuring, is presented. These rules are suggestive of the manipulations that need to be afforded in computational tools intended to support designers in design exploration. Accordingly, the results of the experimental investigations informed the development of a prototype shape synthesis system, and a discussion is presented in which the future requirements of such systems are explored.

summary The Brazilian Performance Standard (NBR 15.575/2013 – Housing Buildings – Performance) is changing the design process of residential buildings, imposing new acoustic performance criteria. In this Context, the present paper proposes the programming of a Revit plug-in for verifying sound insulation of walls between environments, collecting information of the building’s model from a parameter database, calculating values of the elements’ sound reduction index and allowing to ponder constructive systems’ performance. The application aims to amplify productivity of designers and to provide greater control over technological solutions, assisting in the compliance with performance criteria.

summary This paper presents the scenario of programming use by architects and engineers by creation of their own unique tools. It aims to emulate and understand BIM software customization phenomenon by development of plug-ins. Design Science Research was used to direct the construction of artifacts for specific practical problems. Results are presented by development of Revit plug-ins to meet Brazilian Performance Standard criteria in areas of acoustic and luminous performance. It is concluded that scripting enables the designer to tailor processes to their own particularities, possibly becoming a high-impact skill in the future, with importance regarding their independence and versatility.

summary In order to design an ephemeral pavilion located at the Serpentine Gallery (England), an experimental design approach was developed in this paper by using biomimicry strategies associated with parametric modeling. Exploring the solution-based methodology, the analysis of the sartorius muscle anatomic features such as rotation, flexion and long shape allowed inspiring the proposal of a Sartorius Pavilion which is the object of study. The experiment was implemented throughout a parametric visual script tool resulting in a model capable of rapidly and intuitively simulating shape variations, basic structural and material attributes by modifying a set of previously defined parameters.

summary The World is experiencing a rapid surge in urban population, in addition to fast urbanization processes. Contemporary cities witness the rise of numerous urban and social problems, leading to the emergence of informal settlements. Still, computational and parametric resources have increasingly been adopted in novel approaches to urban planning and design. These resources can be used in informal settlements to improve urban quality without losing their essential features. This paper describes a teaching experience in the context of a design studio that uses shape grammars and parametric tools to design for an informal settlement context in Ahmedabad, India.

summary This paper presents a computational approach to provide dynamic assessment and optimization of principles derived from Transit Oriented Development (TOD) - an urban development model that advocates compact, walkable, and mixed-use neighborhoods, centered around transport stations. In spite of being increasingly promoted in several cities of the world, TOD lacks an approach that addresses multivariate data for optimization of its principles. In this paper, we propose a methodology backed by an algorithmic-parametric CAD environment, applied to a neighborhood unit in a case study. The objective is the analysis and improvement of TOD relevant and measurable features (transit accessibility, walkability and diversity) in order to optimize neighborhoods' features. The ultimate goal is to facilitate the management of solutions in TOD planning processes, supported by a principle-index-tool approach triad.
