summary Despite the complexity of parametric modeling, it is possible to apply it in educational context with a simpler approach. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the use of active methodologies in education. Gamification, particularly, should be emphasized regarding its association with parametric modeling. Post-pandemic scenario made possible the reinsertion of traditional practices, thus adding successful learning methods from online teaching. This paper aims to compare the adoption of parameterization and gamification to teach Descriptive Geometry on both teaching scenarios: online and presential. Two experiments were implemented to four Technical Drawing classes - A and B (2021), C and D (2022) -, in high school and technician level. The quantitative results addressed to the efficiency of parametric modeling as a didactic tool, and the qualitative results indicated that the students accepted the experiences of parameterization and gamification, on both scenarios. Nevertheless, there were subtle differences between the results from online and presential scenarios.

summary There is little research on the possibilities and limitations of digital design, prototyping and manufacturing of architectural components inspired by microscopic plant structures. The hypothesis was that "prototypes of autonomous responsive cell panels can be produced using digital manufacturing by addition and robotics. The objective was to determine the possibilities and limitations of the design, prototyping and manufacture of a responsive cell prototype inspired by the microscopic plant structures of the peel of fruits of Annona Cherimola, Mill and Annona Squamosa, L. (atemoia), Mauritia Flexuosa (buriti), Attalea ssp (babassu coconut), Annona Muricata (soursop) and Annona Squamosa (pine cone or conde fruit). Autonomous responsive cells inspired in plant structures can be produced. But the autonomous responsive cell controlled for sensor-presents itself as an alternative to automatic orientation toward a natural (sun) or artificial lighting source.

summary The biocolonisation of urban building surfaces by mosses is a ubiquitous and naturally occurring phenomenon that encapsulates immense ecological value for both current and future challenges of life in cities. The miniature ecosystems facilitated by mosses capture atmospheric pollutants and maintain local biodiversity by providing shelter and nutrients for a highly diverse set of organisms across all kingdoms of life. Early establishment and growth of bryophyte communities appear to be influenced by a dynamic mix of biotic and abiotic factors, while environmental cues modulate physiological responses and biochemical exchanges. A prototype monitoring device was designed to measure carbon dioxide uptake under variable light, humidity, and temperature conditions during a 3-week experiment. By providing a non-destructive tool for understanding and visualising the impact of environmental variables on photosynthetic behaviour, the device contributes to a biocentric design practice, where an organism’s ecological needs begin to drive the development of bioreceptive micro-environments.

title The analysis of architectural discourse in the context of computational public opinion: Data mining of Google map reviews

summary New media platforms and mapping tools are created by digital communities, and their representations influence public opinion. Crowdsourcing platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Google search engines and Maps have no such limitations or boundaries as in the physical space, these platforms are creating new virtual public places. To assess and forecast the accessibility and aesthetic issues of urban spaces in Istanbul, text and image data from Google Maps were employed. In this study, we searched at the reviews of certain public/semi-public places by using text mining and image analytics tools. Recently designed or renovated 11 public buildings and open places were chosen. The main findings of this exploratory study are that; 1) the level of being public can be understood from the crowdsourcing, 2) image analytics of crowdsourced visual data can assist to identify the aesthetic quality, and 3) the accessibility capacity of public spaces can be identified.

summary Life is getting digital more than ever as technology improves. While the Internet is responsible for two percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, it is underestimated as a pollutant. Since public awareness is one of the most important preservation methods, it can contribute to protecting the environment from carbon emissions by raising people's understanding. In this regard, serious games, as a type of gamification transmitting educational content besides entertainment, immerse the player in enjoyment while teaching them a specific topic or enhancing their skills in a field. This study proposes a serious game, taking the digital unseen carbon footprint and its effects on the landscape into the topic. The game considers SDG goals provided by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. In this regard, the research uses SDGs 4 and 7 by providing quality education for all and access to sustainable energy by changing people's everyday habits.

title From Shelter to Home: Transformation Grammar of Housing Units in Irbid Refugee Camp

summary This paper presents research on the design challenges in refugee camps where “temporary" shelters often evolve into permanent homes and larger communities. These transformations convey an informal design process, a phenomenon evident in Irbid Camp for Palestinian refugees in Jordan. To study this site and design process in detail, shape rules based on the transformation of ten individual housing units are developed, with consideration of area and growth limitations inside the refugee camp. The Irbid Camp Grammar reveals a modular, grid-based logic at play in the incremental and spontaneous design of refugee housing from temporary shelters to permanent homes. This study is one step forward in helping us understand how formalizing this growth logic can contribute to the design of better emergency housing interventions in the future.

summary Hotspot creation is one of the most important modules within virtual environments which helps show the navigators of these environments some information about semantic elements within it and facilitate the navigation between the virtual spaces. In this paper, a system for automatic hotspot proposals and creation in virtual environments is proposed. The system uses computer vision modules to automatically propose hotspot locations in addition to identifying and creating these hotspots with candidate labels. Two main modules used in the system are object detection and scene segmentation. The scene segmentation helps give candidate hotspot areas and provides an overall understanding of the semantics of the virtual environment. The object detection module also uses pretrained deep networks for automatic hotspot creation over these objects. The system helps speed up the hotspot creation process and offers a tool for virtual environment users and creators.

summary Understanding the relationships between individuals and the urban streetscape is an essential component of sustainable city planning. However, analysis of these relationships involves accounting for a complex mix of human behaviour, perception, as well as geospatial context. In this context, a comprehensive framework for predicting preferred streetscape characteristics utilizing deep learning and geospatial techniques is proposed. Geotagged social media posts and street view imagery are employed to account for individual sentiment and geospatial context. Natural Language Processing (NLP) and computer vision (CV) are then used to infer sentiment and model the visual environment within which individuals make posts to social media. An application of the developed framework is provided using Instagram posts and Google Street View imagery of the urban environment. A spatial analysis is conducted to assess the extent to which urban attributes correlate with the sentiment of social media postings. The results shed light on sustainable streetscape planning by focusing on the relationship between users and the built environment in a complex urban setting. Finally, limitations of the developed methodology as well as future directions are discussed.

summary Wikihouse is an open-source, modular, digitally fabricated building system. Despite being the object of many studies in different countries, most of these experiences present a sequence of frames that generate only linear forms without formal variations. In this sense, this study aims to develop a geometry that allows more variations through the repetition of the same module. For this purpose, the research uses visual algorithmic modeling in Grasshopper to generate the geometry. As a result, we inserted the frames into a trapezium and mirrored the main profile, which kept the number of pieces. In future research, we intend to optimize the number of parts, reduce the cost and production time, and build a 1:1 module for validating its constructive stability.

summary Documentation of built cultural heritage is an important safeguarding strategy. However, the use of traditional documentation techniques, based on the direct acquisition of measurements with analog devices, makes the process time-consuming, inaccurate, and often inadequate for recording complex shapes, often found in the ornaments of certain architectural styles. This work explores the use of photogrammetry combined with digital fabrication in order to develop a methodology to document these elements of high geometric complexity, creating a workflow that connects digital techniques to traditional materialization techniques, exploring the potential of documentation to translate back into matter similar to that of the documented object. Seeking to validate these workflows, a series of prototypes are made in different materialities to evaluate the different techniques employed.

summary Which kind of imagination do we need for the future of our planet? In the past 150 years, we have completely transformed our biosphere. Today we have arrived at points of no return in global warming! The temperature of the Arctic Ocean will increase by 3-5°C by mid-century. This will lead to disastrous ocean acidification, sea-level rise, and worst of all the thawing of the permafrost that will release 1 trillion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In this paper, we argue that building with biology will be the most important force to transform our planet. Since 2006, Synthetic Biology (SynBio) has surfaced as the fastest-growing technology in human history. SynBio involves emerging techniques that allow us to design, edit, and engineer all kinds of living organisms. In this paper, we elaborate on its potential development in growing infrastructures and its impacts on architectural thinking.

summary The main objective of this research is to develop a method that can integrate responsive and interactive architecture through the application of soft robotics on a façade. To achieve this objective, a review of the main concepts, adaptive architecture (responsive-interactive) and soft robotics was first carried out. Secondly, recent studies and research that speak of the application of soft robotics in architecture are analyzed. With the knowledge acquired in the analyzes and reference studies, together with the help of programming and computational design tools, a scalable physical prototype was developed that manages to integrate both types of adaptive behaviors (responsive-interactive) in a single hybrid robotic system (soft-rigid), demonstrating the potential of soft robotics in architecture, in this case being applied to be sensitive and act on changes in temperature produced by solar radiation.

summary Descriptive Geometry demands abstraction and spatial visualization. In this case, parameterization can be useful as a supporting tool. However, in an online learning scenario, where the students have no access to software, it is necessary to re-think and adapt the use of parametric simulation. The active character from the parametric modeling manipulation can be compensated by adopting active teaching-learning methodologies. This didactic experimental study was applied to two classes in a technical and high school education context, focusing on two subjects: points and lines in descriptive geometry. The study intends to analyze the application of parametrization and active methodologies, mostly gamification, in the online learning of Descriptive Geometry. The results indicate that it is still possible and efficient to apply parametric modeling in online learning articulating with active methodologies, and it hence improves the teaching-learning process.

summary This study proposes a framework for the use of mobile robots namely RIZOBots in form studies in the early phases of design. The proposed framework was tested in two experiments. An agent-based model was utilized for the movement of mobile robots, a drawing task was defined as the task. In particular, rule sets for agent-agent and agent-environment interaction were used. Light-sensitivity rules were utilized to achieve agent-environment interaction, apart from obstacle detection. This study focuses on the effects of two different zone-related states on the behavior of RIZOBot which is a configurable differential-drive wheeled robot developed by authors using off-the-shelf products and 3D printed body parts. Two zone types with very basic features are used to define environmental conditions. The traces left on the canvas, the irregularities in the movement of the robots, and the robot-environment interaction will be evaluated in the study. The results and analysis of the two selected experiments are presented and the potential of the proposed framework is discussed.

summary The objective of the project is to facilitate the perception of the distance between the technological skills built during the academic journey of the students in Visual Communication Design, and the skills demanded by the labor market. For this research, the Vision in Product (ViP) methodology was used, transferring the results to a possible 2027 scenario. We defined seven professional technological profiles which will help students in their professional insertion, and their adaption to the fast changes in the labor area. Our collaborative and interactive interface was designed to display the data obtained in the survey and the design profiles that will be most in demand in the future. The differential value of our research lies in the possibility of showing the obtained results in a collaborative interface.

summary Based on a university teaching-research-extension experience in Sao Gonçalo do Baçao (Minas Gerais, Brazil), this article discusses the use of digital technology as a way to expand the virtual, understood as an event in latent state, as a process of problematization and not of problem solving. Three digital interfaces developed with the common goal of encouraging questioning and the exercise of autonomy from different approaches and themes are presented. The interfaces seek to articulate the Flusserian idea of 'responsibility', regarded as the act of responding to others in a way that promotes an opening for people to continue the design process dialogically. In short, the interfaces indicate possibilities provided by digital technologies and exemplify ways in which they might drive processes towards social-spatial transformation.

summary The following paper describes and comments a construction planning platform for the Additive Manufacturing of wall modules, as a set of design and planning actions that interwove robotic, material capacities and spatial characteristics. Goal here is to take semi-conventional strategy and augment the algorithmic process for design and knowledge acquisition regarding design oriented to 3D Printing Construction.

summary This article synthesizes the result of a systematization and analysis of videomapping carried out in “Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada” in the period 2014-2022, taking as a source the information collected in the investigation "(Lafluf, 2020), it is updated by integrating new experiences and new interpretations. Likewise, the article aims to provide a structured way to describe and analyze videomapping projects, keeping in mind three axes: context project, mapping project, and mapping event. These categories refer to a strategy developed within the methodological framework of the master's thesis "Videomapping en los proyectos del Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada de la Facultad de Arquitectura Diseno y Urbanismo (Udelar). Caso de estudio: Videomapping Patrimonio Anglo" (Lafluf, 2020) as well as in other investigations to describe the videomapping. Once this set of videomapping projects has been presented, general considerations are made to analyze the surveyed cases.

summary Water availability has a key role in their process of occupation. However, accelerated urbanization had several detrimental impacts, increasing the vulnerability of urban communities. Because of the limitations of traditional planning, an alternative approach is emerging to respond to the constant changes in the landscape. Now, green infrastructure (GI), an ecosystem-based approach (EbA), is being used combined with traditional solutions to increase the resilience of the cities. In this paper, we proposed the use of an algorithm to determine the best place to implement GI. The algorithm used the inputs to develop a multi-criteria analysis capable of translating urban complexity. Results show that the GI solution can’t be efficiently implemented without context evaluation. However, the algorithm has the potential to become an informative tool in the decision-making process of urban planning.
