summary This paper explores the potential of robotic needle felting for customized production of nonwoven textiles and their architectural applications. The possibility to program the robotic movement and locally control fiber density and distribution allows the design of nonwoven, heterogeneous materials with graded properties not by differentiating their chemical composition, but rather controlling their mechanical structure. We propose a parametric design and fabrication workflow relying on a 6-axis robotic arm. We describe design techniques for the generation of felted surfaces with varying material properties and their translation to instructions for robotic felting, as well as the physical fabrication setup. Within our research, the ability to locally differentiate material properties is further explored to create three-dimensional folding behaviors. We study how fiber densities affect their folding ability and geometry, examine qualities of resulting edges, analyze how they affect folding and finally design targeted folded structures by informing the felting pattern. While robotic felting has not yet found significant applications in architecture, the designs and prototypes demonstrate its potential in the architectural context, as it suggests new solutions for recyclable, circular building components or surfaces.

summary This paper documents an initiative taking the form of a "dialogue". The format which has been developed is somewhat similar to that of the "conversation" which Mondrian conceived in 1919, taking place between two fictitious characters - A and B - discussing the new direction in art, which he called "Nieuwe Beelding" and which contributed to the "De Stijl" movement (the dialogue was followed later that year by a "trialogue" between X, Y and Z on a virtual walk taking them from the countryside to the city) 1 . This time the issue is not so much the evolvement of a new artistic or architectural style, but the role of "new media" in architecture... The present dialogue takes place between two fictitious media proponents ("Alpha" and "Omega"). They take turns questioning several issues and exchanging proposals... What are the values - and the promises - of computer supported instruments in creative design and research - concerning the art and science shaping the built environment? How do the present applications measure up, how do they compare to the expectations and ambitions expressed a number of years ago? The form of a dialogue means that issues and ideas, which are not often aired within the confines of academic discourse, can be played back and forth and a measure of exaggeration was intended from the beginning... This contribution does not in any way pretend to be all-inclusive. Rather, the paper is meant to put forward ideas and experiences - from the perspective of the Delft Media group, in practice, in teaching and in research - which may stimulate (or even irritate?) but will hopefully activate. The aim is to open up discussions, to allow other (hidden) agendas for the future to become more visible and to look for platforms for sharing concepts and fascinations, however improbable they might be...

In the world environment it stands out the first database developed in Argentina, it is the database of the Modern andContemporary Architecture “Datarq 2000” elaborated by the Prof. Arturo Montagú of the University of Buenos Aires. The general objective of this work it was the use of new technologies for the prosecution in Architecture and Design (MONTAGU, Ob.cit). In the database, he intends to incorporate a complementary methodology and alternative of use of the informationthat habitually is used in the teaching of the architecture. When concluding this investigation, it was achieved: 1) analysis of projects of modern architecture, of which some form part of the historical patrimony of Maracaibo; 2) organized registrations of type text: historical, formal, space and technical data, and graph: you plant, facades, perspectives, pictures, among other, of the Moments of the Architecture of the Modernity in the city, general data and more excellent characteristics of the constructions, and general data of the Planners with their more important works, besides information on the parcels where the constructions are located, 3)construction in digital format and development of representations photorealistics of architecture projects already built. It is excellent to highlight the importance in the use of the Technologies of Information and Communication in this investigation, since it will allow to incorporate to the means digital part of the information of the modern architecturalconstructions that characterized the city of Maracaibo at the end of the XX century, and that in the last decades they have suffered changes, some of them have disappeared, destroying leaves of the modern historical patrimony of the city; therefore, the necessity arises of to register and to systematize in digital format the graphic information of those constructions. Also, to demonstrate the importance of the use of the computer and of the computer science in the representation and compression of the buildings of the modern architecture, to inclination texts, images, mapping, models in 3D and information organized in databases, and the relevance of the work from the pedagogic point of view,since it will be able to be used in the dictation of computer science classes and history in the teaching of the University studies of third level, allowing the learning with the use in new ways of transmission of the knowledge starting from the visual information on the part of the students in the elaboration of models in three dimensions or electronic scalemodels, also of the modern architecture and in a future to serve as support material for virtual recoveries of some buildings that at the present time they don’t exist or they are almost destroyed. In synthesis, the investigation will allow to know and to register the architecture of Maracaibo in this last decade, which arises under the parameters of the modernity and that through its organization and visualization in digital format, it will allow to the students, professors and interested in knowing it in a quicker and more efficient way, constituting a contribution to theteaching in the history area and calculation. Also, it can be of a lot of utility for the development of future investigation projects related with the thematic one and restoration of buildings of the modernity in Maracaibo.

title On the Limitations of Shape Grammars: Comments on Aaron Fleisher’s Article “Grammatical Architecture?”

summary Shape grammars were introduced by Gips and Stiny in 1972. Since then, there have been many articles and books written by them and their associates. In 1992, Aaron Fleisher, a professor at the School of Planning, MIT, wrote a critique of their work in an article titled “Grammatical Architecture?” published in the journal Environment and Planning B. According to him, Gips, Stiny and later Mitchell, propose a hypothesis that states that shape grammars are presumed to represent knowledge of architectural form, that grammars are “formable,” and that there is a visual correspondence to verbal grammar. The strong version of “the hypothesis requires that an architectural form be equivalent to a grammar.” Fleisher considers these hypotheses unsustainable, and argues his case by analyzing the differences between language, and architecture, and by dealing with the concepts of lexicons, syntax and semantics. He concludes by stating that architectural design is negotiated in two modalities: the verbal and the visual, and that equivalences are not at issue; they do not exist. If there is such thing as a language for design, it would provide the means to maintain a discussion of the consequences in one mode, of the state and conditions of the other. Fleisher’s observations serve as the basis of this paper, a tribute to him, and also an opportunity to present an outline to an alternate approach or hypothesis to shape grammars, which is “nonlinguistic” but “generative,” in the sense that it uses production rules. A basic aspect of this hypothesis is that the only similarity between syntactic rules in language and some rules in architecture is that they are recursive.

summary A methodology and several algorithms for interactive motion planning are developed for multi-equipment landfill operations in an automated landfill system (ALS). A system for establishing ALS is also proposed in the paper. To develop a multi-truck/multi-compactor ALS, the major problems can he classified into three principal categories: (1) navigation system for multiple devices, (2) job-site geometric model, and (3) instantaneous motion planning and control system for equipment in the work site. To solve the problems from the three categories, this paper will present a methodology to simulate the operational processes of landfill vehicles and equipment in pre-planning a landfill project as well as finding efficient and collision-free motion patterns to control autonomous landfill equipment during the construction phase. Furthermore, by linking this system to a global positioning system (GPS), the efficient traffic routing and collision-free path for each piece of equipment can he calculated by using real-time positional data acquisition in a 3-D geometric model of a landfill site.

summary This paper presents a method for organising urban data inside the CAD environment into a hierarchical structure, which promotes the ease of transferring information between all available urban elements, from streets to buildings passing by the plots and blocks. This is done using parametric methods that map the urban data using the available CAD and GIS records. Finally, the paper presents a couple of example scenarios where such methods are most needed and how much they could facilitate more detailed and complex data to be accessed, compared, and analysed.

summary This research aims to compare two experiential learning methods’ effectiveness for (1) a deeper understanding of structural behaviour, and (2) skills to design architectural forms that are structurally informed. A course was planned to investigate the effect of the type and order of the two teaching units: (1) guided experiments on a parametric design model, and (2) parametric design of a tower and custom experiments using Grasshopper and Karamba. Results indicate that the group that started with the experiments learned to ask the relevant questions by experimenting with the appropriate parameters that helped them to find the structural principles and apply them during their design phase. The group that started with the design were lost in the structural concepts and in identifying the meaningful parameters to test for. However, after the experiment was completed, this group could make a knowledge transfer. Acquisition of structures knowledge may require the experience of multiple situations while the application of this knowledge may involve selecting the relevant structural experience with the architectural form-finding process. In the future, a proposed experiential learning method will be compared with an instructive learning approach of structural systems for architecture students.

summary Compared to the take-make-waste-oriented linear economy model, the circular model has been studied since the 1980s. Due to consumption-oriented lifestyles along with having a tendency of considering waste materials as trash, studies on sustainable materials management (SMM) have remained at a theoretical level or created temporary and limited impacts. To ensure SMM supports The European Green Deal, there is a necessity of developing top-down and bottom-up strategies simultaneously, which can be metaphorized as digging a tunnel from two different directions to meet in the middle of a mountain. In parallel with the New European Bauhaus concept, this research aims to create a case study for boosting bottom-up and data-driven methodologies to produce short-loop products made of bio-based biocomposite materials from local food & organic wastes. The Architecture departments of two universities from different countries collaborated to practice these design democratization methodologies using data transfer paths. The 3D printable models, firmware code, and detailed explanation of working with a customized 3D printer paste extruder were shared using online tools. Accordingly, the bio-based biocomposite recipe from eggshell, xanthan gum, and citric acid, which can be provided from local shops, food & organic wastes, was investigated concurrently to enhance its printability feature for generating interior design elements such as a vase or vertical gardening unit. While sharing each step from open-source platforms with adding snapshots and videos allows further development between two universities, it also makes room for other researchers/makers/designers to replicate the process/product. By combining modern manufacturing and traditional crafting methods with materials produced with DIY techniques from local resources, and using global data transfer platforms to transfer data instead of products themselves, this research seeks to unlock the value of co-creative design practices for SMM.

summary This study presents a pedagogical experiment on the integration of AI into the project studio in the early stages of design education. The motivation of the study is to support creative encounters in design studios by promoting student-design representation, student-student, and student-artificial intelligence (AI) interaction. In the scope of this study, a short-term studio project is used as a case study to examine these creative encounters. The experiment covers five stages that enable a recursive analysis-synthesis action. The stages include (i) precedent analysis of a given set of building façades images, (ii) feature extraction, (iii) composing new façade representations through employing previously generated features, (iv) training an AI by the use of styleGAN2-ADA with the outcomes of stage 3, (v) Use of synthetically generated façade images as a design driver. The pedagogical experiment is evaluated through the lenses of novelty, style, surprisingness, and complexity concepts. The challenges and potentials are introduced, as well as elaborations on the future directions of the interplay between AI-oriented making and first-year student making.

summary The hybridization of architectural, biological and robotic agencies Situated in the field of architectural biodesign, InterspeciesForms explores a closer relationship between the fungus Pleurotus ostreatus and the designer in the creation of form. The intention of hybridizing mycelia’s agency of growth with architectural design intention is to generate novel, non-indexical crossbred designed outcomes that evolve preconceived notions of architectural form. Mycelium are threadlike fibrous root systems made up of hyphae, that form the vegetative part of a fungus (Jones 2020). Known as the hackers of the wood wide web (Simard 1997) mycelia form complex symbiotic relationships with other species that inhabit our earth. Michael Lim states “Fungi redefine resourcefulness, collaboration, resilience and symbiosis” (Lim 2022, p. 14). When wandering around the forest to connect with other species or searching for food, fungi form elaborate and entangled networks by spreading their hyphal tips. Shown in Figure 1, this living labyrinth results in the aesthetic formation of an intricate web. Due to the organisms ability to determine the most effective direction of growth, communicate with its surrounding ecosystem, and connect with other species, fungi are indeed an intelligent species with a unique aesthetic that must not be ignored. In drawing on these concepts, I refer to the organism’s ability to search for, tangle, and digest its surroundings as ‘mycelia agency of growth’. It is this specific behavioral characteristic that is the focus of this research, with which I, as the architect, set out to co-create and hybridize with.

summary Despite the complexity of parametric modeling, it is possible to apply it in educational context with a simpler approach. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the use of active methodologies in education. Gamification, particularly, should be emphasized regarding its association with parametric modeling. Post-pandemic scenario made possible the reinsertion of traditional practices, thus adding successful learning methods from online teaching. This paper aims to compare the adoption of parameterization and gamification to teach Descriptive Geometry on both teaching scenarios: online and presential. Two experiments were implemented to four Technical Drawing classes - A and B (2021), C and D (2022) -, in high school and technician level. The quantitative results addressed to the efficiency of parametric modeling as a didactic tool, and the qualitative results indicated that the students accepted the experiences of parameterization and gamification, on both scenarios. Nevertheless, there were subtle differences between the results from online and presential scenarios.

summary Data-driven urban design processes consist of iterative actions of many stakeholders, which require digital participatory approaches for collecting data from a high number of participants to make informed decisions. It is important to evaluate such processes to justify the necessary costs and efforts while continuously improving digital participation. Nevertheless, such evaluation remains a challenge due to the involvement of different stakeholders including participants, designers, and policymakers in decision-making processes, and the lack of a systematic method to generalize participation outputs that are mostly situated and context based. By addressing this challenge, this paper introduces a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) based framework to measure the effectiveness and quality of digital participation systematically and quantitatively. To achieve such evaluation, we conducted a digital participation experiment and investigated such processes with the help of participants, designers, and policymakers from Singapore and Hamburg. By formulating this framework, we aim to reveal perspectives of different stakeholders towards digital participation and enable the evaluation and comparison of digital participation processes based on the introduced digital participation criteria.

summary Due to their recent popularity and success in fields such as engineering and business, gamification and by extension game design principles demonstrate the ability to teach complex, multi-disciplinary skills in an engaging, entertaining, and effective way. Architectural education especially introductory architectural education is a foundational and fundamental part of a budding architecture student’s career and oftentimes requires the understanding of dynamic systems, spatial reasoning, and experiential learning. The paper posits that gamification and game design principles can utilize certain components such as augmented reality, narrative design, and fun in order to create tools, gamify existing curriculum, and increase retention, engagement, and mastery of the difficult high-tech skillsets required of introductory architects. The paper focuses on reviewing and systematically analyzing research on gamification in education. In particular, it focuses on systematically reviewing and analyzing data from multiple relevant case studies chosen based on the application of technology such as augmented reality, the integration of game design, and the feasibility of gamification in educational environments. This data is examined based on feasibility, accessibility, and effects on information retention and the findings are outlined in a comparative table of methods, tools, and technologies organized based on their suitability. Ultimately, the paper aims to establish a framework for gamifying introductory modules in architectural education and hopes to create a future architectural augmented reality game meant to utilize gamification to help new architectural students.

summary Mass customizing of building components allows new conditions to explore aesthetic and sustainability in architecture. However, such possibilities tend to require the use of expensive and heavy digital fabrication machinery, which is seldomly available in most regions on the planet. In this context, this paper presents a research in progress that explores Augmented Reality (AR) to support craft production of customized stereotomic components. As a portable technology, the work examines the potential of AR to materialize design solutions that are geometrically complex and variable. Considering the current research on augmented fabrication processes, this work contributes to producing variable building components for stereotomic construction with a focus on earth-based materials. Extending the findings of a recently completed PhD thesis, the work replaces the use of a robot with the HoloLens glasses and Fologram application to produce low- cost and reusable molds. This augmented fabrication setup allows the human control of the production of variable molds, ready for casting and assembly of stereotomic components. This work addresses several of the NEB and UN SDGs goals.

summary The new construction that is projected to take place between 2020 and 2040 plays a critical role in embodied carbon emissions. The change in material selection is inversely proportional to the budget as the project progresses. Given the fact that early-stage design processes often do not include environmental performance metrics, there is an opportunity to investigate a toolset that enables early-stage design processes to integrate this type of analysis into the preferred workflow of concept designers. The value here is that early-stage environmental feedback can inform the crucial decisions that are made in the beginning, giving a greater chance for a building with better environmental performance in terms of its life cycle. This paper presents the development of a tool called LearnCarbon, as a plugin of Rhino3d, used to educate architects and engineers in the early stages about the environmental impact of their design. It facilitates two neural networks trained with the Embodied Carbon Benchmark Study by Carbon Leadership Forum, which learns the relationship between building geometry, typology, and construction type with the Global Warming potential (GWP) in tons of C02 equivalent (tCO2e). The first one, a regression model, can predict the GWP based on the massing model of a building, along with information about typology and location. The second one, a classification model, predicts the construction type given a massing model and target GWP. LearnCarbon can help improve the building life cycle impact significantly through early predictions of the structure’s material and can be used as a tool for facilitating sustainable discussions between the architect and the client.

The data-informed approach presented in these field notes helps to integrate ecological needs within the design process, and develop more precise design strategies to mitigate this impact.

summary Digital design processes are increasingly being explored through the use of 2D generative adversarial networks (GAN), due to their capability for assembling latent spaces from existing data. These infinite spaces of synthetic data have the potential to enhance architectural design processes by mapping adjacencies across multidimensional properties, giving new impulses for design. The paper outlines a teaching method that applies 2D GANs to explore spatial characteristics with architectural students based on a training data set of 3D models of material-labelled houses. To introduce a common interface between human and neural networks, the method uses vertical slices through the models as the primary medium for communication. The approach is tested in the framework of a design course.

summary InterLoop employs previously developed workflows that enable multi-planar robotic bending of metal tubes with high accuracy and repeatability (Huang and Spaw 2022). The scale and complexity is managed by employing augmented reality (AR) technology in two capacities, fabrication and assembly (Jahn et al. 2018; Jahn, Newnham, and Berg 2022). The AR display overlays part numbers, bending sequences, expected geometry, and robot movements in real time as the robot fabrication is occurring. For assembly purposes, part numbers, centerlines, and their expected positional relationships are projected via quick response (QR) codes spatially tracked by the Microsoft Hololens 2 (Microsoft 2019). This is crucial due to the length and self-similarity of complex multi-planar parts that make them difficult to distinguish and orient correctly. Leveraging augmented reality technology and robotic fabrication uncovers a novel material expression in tubular structures with bundles, knots, and interweaving (Figure 1).

summary Faced with the challenges of the actors' coordination regarding the increasing building complexity, the new digital collective approaches of advanced design raise the problem of the transition between collaborative ideation (first creative moments of deployment of ideas) and the following phases of digital production (including the formalisation of building specifications in BIM models). In response, we aim to develop a digitally instrumented method for moving from conventional architectural graphic documents to the 3D digital models characteristic of BIM. We propose here a detailed formalisation of the ideation-BIM transition problem and a method for managing building information to improve this transition.

summary This paper describes a method to understand and digitally reconstruct two sculptures by Gertrud Goldschmidt, a German-born, Venezuelan artist also called Gego. Gego is best known for her series of works called “Reticuláres”. These three-dimensional and open installations, mostly hanging freely in space, are playing with the concept and perception of space as well as challenging the definition of the traditional sculpture. The paper aims to generate information about two specific structures called “Nubes” (Clouds for Spanish) to assist in a physical reconstruction for a larger exhibition about Gego and to contribute to understanding Gego’s work process. Originally, the structures were suspended from a building's ceiling as an art installation in Caracas, 1974. There are three main challenges for this reconstruction: (1) The installations exhibit a complex three-dimensional geometry. (2) Scant drawings and photographs exist. (3) Gego might not have followed her initial drawings completely when building Nubes physically, because of the mentioned complexity and due to the light and bendable material properties of the employed material. The paper describes a computational process that recreates the object’s geometry in four steps: (1) Analyse all existing media of the structure. (2) Translate found information to the digital environment of Grasshopper. (3) Use a physical simulation to derive the end state of the hanging structure. (4) Optimize and tune the simulation with an optimization algorithm for better results. This paper demonstrates the usefulness of computational tools for reconstructing lost sculptures with little documentation. In this case, these tools allow a more accurate reconstruction and contribute to a fuller understanding of the design and realization process of Gego's Nubes.
