summary An exploration study is performed to investigate how a dynamic (digital) structural expressivity can lead to a new intuitive relationship between the individual user and the building.The study links the structure’s experience which can be described mathematically, and is theoretically exact, to the subjective user’s experience that is studied in the fi eld of psychology and phenomenology. The dynamic nature of their interaction is studied and an interactive virtual design is made in which the structure shows the forces the user introduces and also adapts to them; it enables intuitive communication. This approach fi ts in the global shift from primarily static to a more dynamic, one to one, agent based understanding of our environment.

summary This paper introduces a design methodology and a toolkit developed as a parametric CAD program for configurative design of architectural plan layouts. Using this toolkit, designers can start plan layout process with sketching the way functional spaces need to connect to each other. A tool draws an interactive bubble diagram and a set of tools reveal feasible geometric interpretations of the proposed bubble diagram in terms of plan layout graphs. Offering real-time Space Syntax analyses at the same time, the tools provide feedback on the spatial performance, which is translatable into the likely social performance of the plan layout patterns.

summary In a quest for promoting sustainable modes of mobility, we have revisited how feasible and suitable is it for people to walk or cycle to their destinations in a neighbourhood. We propose a few accessibility measures based on an 'Easiest Path' algorithm that provides also actual temporal distance between locations. This algorithm finds paths that are as short, flat and straightforward as possible. Considering several 'points of interest', the methods can answer such questions as “do I have a 5 minutes 'easy' walking/cycling access to all/any of these points?” or, “which is the preferred point of interest with 'easy' walking cycling access?” We redefine catchment zones using Fuzzy logics and allow for mapping 'closeness' considering preferences such as 'how far' people are willing to go on foot/bike for reaching a particular destination. The accessibility measures are implemented in the toolkit CONFIGURBANIST to provide real-time analysis of urban networks for design and planning.

summary In this paper we describe an experimental CAD design studio, where we study the influence of CAD tools and special materials on the process of designing. The studio has the following aims: teaching how to collaborate using an Internet facility, and exploring the relationship between computation, sketching and physical models. Interaction and sustainability are major themes in the design studio. We present the pedagogical approach and results of the design studio, followed by observations and conclusions.

summary Being overwhelmed by computing technologies, we are forwarding more and more of our skills into area of "thinking by head". Our designing capabilities are turning into capabilities of "how to work with very intelligent technology". The processes of human brain, nevertheless, are different to the processes in computer. Designers are said to think by hand. As architects we are looking for final forms that not only fulfil the technical requirements, but are beautiful as well. Therefore sketching is one of the skills that belongs to an architect in order to design and particularly to work in a team. The workshop will accordingly focus on sketching on electronic devices in comparison with sketching on paper. Is it actually possible to switch to tablets when sketching? If yes, which application is the best to use? In order to find that out, there will be a test of three applications: ColLab Sketch, Queeky and FlockDraw. The participants will be sketching on-line and helping to find the best way of communication by sketch. By drawing they will become a part of the research, their work will be post-produced and exhibited at the welcome dinner.

summary This paper extends our previous research on using memorable spaces displayed in virtual reality (VR) for learning while utilizing various memory techniques such as Method of Loci (MoL). For this method we need to identify design guidelines for an easily memorable space which provides enough opportunities to create mnemonic devices in order to make the method efficient. Therefore, we explored various design principles of memorable space and experimentally tested them with users to find patterns and verify their validity. Experiments focused on exploring composition, atmosphere and affordance of the space. Users were placing mnemonic devices in the VR environment and we observed and measured their behavior and usage of the given space. From gathered data we defined several design principles which were either predicted or discovered during the testing. We summarized our findings and outlined guidelines for designing memorable spaces and further research. Furthermore, data from the memory testing once again indicate efficiency of the method and ability of the users to memorize a long list of consecutive numbers.

summary In this paper we report on a PhD research project that has just started. The main question of the research deals with improvement of architectural education, and we are concerned in particular on the influence of CAD. First we outline the basic assumptions and major considerations of the research, following we describe the research methodology, and show the principal direction of the work. Some work has already been done, and the paper ends with a few tentative “educated guesses” what the possible outcomes of the work may be.

summary The paper describes a possible way of teaching design studio over distance. Diverse experimental settings in terms of using different technology were tested with a group of students located at remote places. In this paper we describe the use of high sophisticated collaborative technology such as Value Lab in combination with ordinary computing equipment on an individual basis such as Prague Lab. It points out the advantages and weaknesses of both Labs. The aim is bringing facility and transparency into remote collaborative process in order to implement them into regular architectural studio education. Authors developed new application “ColLab sketch” in order to understand, simplify and facilitate digital sketch processes on diverse platforms.

summary According to the dictionary ambient architecture should be kind of object or space that relies to its surrounding or spontaneously reacts on the presence of human. Ambient architecture can also be musically expressed [1] or painted [2]. We developed special architectural building units that offer space for incorporation of intelligence and media for human interaction and for ambience.We are introducing an object called PET(ch)air made of PET(b)rick [3], a hollow transparent bottle-brick. The first intention was to generate new building unit from recycled PET material. Now that we observe its qualities, we can see it is well prepared for ambient intelligence application, especially in combination with light. For the purpose of a brick we are transforming old recycled plastic into new bottle-bricks. Using the bottle-brick as building unit we build interior objects that are ready to turn spaces into ambient rooms, places that can be customized by their visitors or spontaneously react on them. Together with this, we opened a design studio, where students were asked to develop ambient interior pieces for a special event using the method of learning by doing.

title Gothic Cathedral in the Virtual Reality

summary Everyone who once visited Beauvais, small town placed 100 km from Paris, certainly asked himself: "how would have this highest gothic cathedral, that was started here, looked like if it had been completed?". I attempted to answer this question in my diploma work in 1994. However, the task wouldn't be done without power of contemporary computers. They made it possible to create the entire three-dimensional model of this magnificent building in the virtual reality. Cathedral Saint-Pierre in Beauvais, which was started in 1225, partly collapsed in 1284 and 1573. Finally, in 1600, when only choir and transept were finished, the works had been interrupted. The height of this highest gothic interior in the world is 48.5m. To my disposition I had the drawings of plan and cross- section of the existing part of the building, photographic specification and detailed description of the construction of the cathedral. I used PC 486DX/33, 16 MB RAM, HD 170 MB and software: Autodesk AutoCAD r.12 and AccuRender r.1.10. The work was divided into three stages. The first one was "building" the model of existing part of the cathedral in the threedimensional CAD-space. The next one was trying "to finish" the temple based on theoretical reflections and comparative analyses of existing French gothic cathedrals. The last stage included the performance of the series of pseudorealistic pictures showing the "finished" cathedral in Beauvais from the outside, inside and with illumination by night.

summary This paper includes some of the results obtained by "The Assessment of San Juan City Environmental Cultural Heritage - A methodology development based on G.I.S. technology" project team. Various criteria and methodologies used for an urban sector diagnosis are analysed based on D.F. Sarmiento Native Home National Historical Monument. Although the above mentioned GIS technology was applied together with the data base generated by the SICAT (Survey Data System), it was necessary to incorporate other data which were not considered by such a base. Consequently, a new system called Heritage Data System (HDS) was designed. The methodological contribution improved the GIS quality of detecting multiple relations among the sector under study cultural goods, such as: eleven environmental historical elements, two designated national historical monuments, one designated national historical site, historical buildings, urban districts, trees and facilities and allowed to define what was called "The Protected Environmental Historical Area".

title Using Space Syntax Software in Explaining Crime

summary Space syntax provides methods for analyzing spaces using recent developments in computer programs. This paper reports a study that was undertaken to investigate the role of space syntax in identifying geographical patterns of crime in Ypsilanti, Michigan. All the spaces in the city were analyzed using the Spatialist, a computer program developed by Georgia Tech. The Spatialist computes the accessibility level of all the spaces in a spatial system. Sociodemographic variables such as median income, racial composition, youth concentration and level of education were available from the U.S. Census. The crime report was obtained from the Ypsilanti Police Department and Eastern Michigan University. It includes data on four types of crime at an address level with the exact date and time. Both sociodemographic variables and crime data were merged with the Spatialist map using ArcGIS. The data was analyzed using SAS, an advanced statistical package. Findings showed strong relationships between attributes of space and crime locations.

summary This paper presents methods and results of a locational research using graphics interface and GIS (Georeferenced Information System). The location model performs a hierarchical analysis on activities related to the Biodiesel production cycle, based on castor oil (Ricinus communis L.). The case study is the Brazilian Northeast region, and indicates properly selected counties for Biodiesel major stages: planting, crushing and oil processing. The research uses a large set of administrative, economical, social, environmental and agricultural data. Final results were obtained with graphical and query methods for selecting and editing data. A fuzzy set program imports territorial offer data and exports location indicators to database. The indicators produced thematic maps containing hierarchical location data, organized to perform a Biodiesel stages zone classification based on graphical analysis. [Full paper in Portuguese]

summary This paper discusses the relevance of CAVE systems in comparison with virtual and augmented reality head-mounted displays in terms of immersion experience, costs, maintenance, ease to use, interactivity, and social interaction. It is based on a comparative study of a systematic literature review comprising the works available at CumInCAD and IEEE databases in the period from 1998-2018, and empirical data from technical visits made to five CAVEs in Europe. The discussion seeks to cover the limits of each technology and questions the need for CAVEs nowadays.

summary This paper presents an initial version of the mapping of Brazilian actors in the field of immersive technologies applied to architecture, urbanism, design, and arts. The mapping includes academic and artistic actors who have produced within the researched theme between 2018-2023. Google Scholar and institutional repositories were the main search tools for relevant productions. After gathering the data, validation procedures were conducted. The eligible names were then added to an online table, intended to be collaborative and dynamic The results revealed a total of 45 mapped actors, including eight artists and 38 academics, affiliated with 21 institutions across Brazil. The collaborative online table situates Brazilian immersive technologies production and help to identify affinities between actors, fostering collaborations and research networks. It provides the possibility of visualizing the distribution of these actors nationwide, informing the academic and non-academic communities about the national artistic and scientific productions within the field.

summary Of the profileration of new business paradigms in recent years, one of the primary foci has been building closer relationships between firms in the value adding chain. Lean production, which encompasses J1T, supply-chain management, and TQM/continuous improvement, has provided an important paradigm for reorganization of business practices and is in the process of revolutioni-zing western mass production industries, particularly the automotive industry. While lean production is attractive, it is not appropriate for all industries or production requirements. Lean production works best within a relatively stable production volume and stable range of products. "Mass customization" has proven difficult for accomplished lean producers such as Toyota, and requires a different set of organizational disciplines than those used in lean production. For example, in the lean production paradigm, relationships with suppliers are long-standing and steady, while in a mass customization paradigm, relationships with and between long-term suppliers will vary over time, and new suppliers will enter and leave the organization in a transient fashion. The organization form appropriate to mass customization is the network organization (also known as the virtual corporation in the popular business press), of which construction project organization is an instance, At the project level, we examine construction organization in the context of network organization theory. In particular, we examine boundaries between firms to highlight problems of coordination in a multi-firm environment, and the interdependencies that arise due to coordination needs. We provide a conceptual framework to describe these aspects of construction network organization, and discuss ways that different construction firms are dealing with coordination and boundary problems by rethinking contractual relationships and building closer ties with other firms in the network.

summary In this article the authors develop some algorithms and tools for solving matrix problems on parallel processing computers. Operations are synchronized through data-flow alone, which makes global synchronization unnecessary and enables the algorithms to be implemented on machines with very simple operating systems and communication protocols. As examples, an algorithm that forms the main modules for solving Liapounov matrix equations is presented. The authors compare this approach to wave front array processors and systolic arrays, and note its advantages in handling missized problems, in evaluating variations of algorithms or architectures, in moving algorithms from system to system, and in debugging parallel algorithms on sequential machines

summary Analyzing and evaluating designs for modifications to suit the requirements of human performance is typically performed only after the architectural spaces and structures have been built and used, a process that is known as retrofit or post-occupancy evaluation. For people with disabilities, there is a special need to overcome this problem by evaluating the suitability of their home environments before the construction phase. Our work introduces a new methodology in which virtual reality (VR) is used for virtual pre-occupancy environmental evaluation (VOE). Our study demonstrates the potential of the VOE concept by developing an interactive living environments model to evaluate human performance before the construction phase.
