summary This paper presents an ongoing research, aiming to introduce a fabrication procedure for the development of tensile mesh systems. The purpose of this methodology is to be implemented in real time, based on a feedback loop logic cyclically iterated between robotic machine control and elastic material behaviour. Our purpose is to extend the capacity of robotically driven mechanisms to the fabrication of complex tensile structures and at the same time, reduce the defects that might occur due to the deformation of the elastic material. In this paper, emphasis is given to the development of a custom-made end effector tool, which is responsible to add elastic threads and create connections in the form of nodes. Based on additive fabrication logic, this process suggests the real time development of physical prototypes through the increasing smoothness of mesh structures.

summary This paper demonstrates an integrated approach for the development of a complex timber structure through a hybrid model of robotic and conventional construction. Specifically, a tree-like branching structure is parametrically developed and optimized in terms of material waste reduction during robotic cutting of variable structural components in size and angle. Also, the position and angle of joints are determined through robotic marking of wooden components in a continuous robotic workflow. This is followed by their conventional assembly into larger structural elements and then into an overall structure. The physical results are evaluated in terms of cutting and assembly accuracy of wooden parts based on a 3D scanning approach. The results show manufacturing deviations, both in cutting and assembly stages, which are executed by the robot and the carpenters respectively. These results provide useful inputs that enables a more thorough and productive consideration of the application of robotic technology and human involvement in the construction industry.

summary The usage of computer as a standard tool for an architect became obvious in the past few years. Late 90's along with their rapid development of technology, followed by the growing amount of computer hardware on the market /constantly better and cheaper at the same time/ caused the big changes in the possibilities of project's presentation. The lack of necessary memory to perform proper calculations for high quality rendered images no longer exists. The question raised most commonly by all leading computer software producers concerns the amount of time in which those calculations can be carried out. The race continues while once again, the price of already existing hardware drops rapidly. All these facts make computer more accessible for a potential user such as an architect. Additionally CAD programmers try to make programs as friendly as possible, reducing constantly the amount of time required to learn the program, at least at its bases. As the result, in the next few years, computer may become a standard, at least in some ways of project's presentation. Once again we may face the problem, when the everyday life goes far beyond the expectations. The question appears, how can all kinds of architectural authorities be prepared for constant changes in this field.

summary Accurate planning and economical building within an existing structure require a complex building analysis based upon detailed scale plans. Work has shown unsatisfactory of measuring tools: (1.) Recording of measurements with meterrule and measuring tape often results in mistakes and wasted time. Since the data is not digitalized the measurements cannot be used by a CAD system. (2.) Commercially available CAD software is made only for new planning but not for planning with an existing structure. Up till now architects who predominantly work with existing structures were not able to take advantage of products in the software- and hardware market which would satisfy their needs. The problems already begin with the search for appropriate tools for the surveying of existing structures and the simplest possible transfer of the data to a CAD System. There is an increased demand for quality surveying of existing structures. In Germany, far more than 60 % of all construction planning is related to existing structures. Due to the special situation in the five new states this percentage will grow significantly. Other countries will find themselves in a similar situation. A large number of precise and analytical surveys of existing structures will be needed in a relative short time. Time pressure and stress factors at construction sites call for quality planning and economical construction which can only be accomplished with reliable and exact surveying of structures. Frustrating experiences in the field have led me to develop systems for the surveying of existing structures. With CASOB (Computer Aided Surveying of Buildings) we have a tool today that simultaneously surveys and creates a CAD compatible drawing.

summary The paper presents a prototype for a Home Automation and Information Systems (HAIS) applied to an existing dwelling, the Florianopolis House, with the potential to address building performance and user behavior towards a more sustainable way of living. Home information and automation systems based on a great variety of sensors, associated with local weather stations and climate forecast databases can significantly impact the construction of more sustainable habits in home dwellers. Monitoring the weather variations, building’s performance and the impact each resident’s activity in energy and water consumption is a powerful tool for the dwellers’ awareness and can provide a significant impact on residents’ reconnection with the natural cycles. The development of the graphic interface is highlighted as a critical issue for the communication of building performance, weather data and actuators control.

title 3D models of urban icons: tracing Benjamin and Koolhaas

summary Walter Benjamin and Rem Koolhaas developed two significant investigations, which explored the culture of Paris and New York through the analysis of their architectural artifacts. Their research projects successfully construct, from a few meaningful components of the built environment, an understanding of the overall city and its society. The objective of this paper is to address the similarities between the research carried out at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the work of these two acclaimed writers. Our group aims to select urban icons, from different moments and areas in Rio de Janeiro, to be studied in order to understand the city evolution in the 20th Century. The distinguished Ministry of Education building is the investigation's prototype, analyzed thorough several 3D models and other digital techniques. We conclude that a thorough study of Benjamin's and Koolhaas' work should be considered a primary support for the interrogation of our own investigation.

summary The primary aim of the monitoring of land use planning is to obtain information about the state and development of land use planning. The new Land Use and Building Act of Finland has obliged the authorities to monitor land use since the beginning of the year 2000. Two information systems help to fulfil this task in the Finnish Environmental Administration. GISALU (Land Use GIS) is a collection of data sets containing geographical data on land use plans, deviation decisions and the cultural environment. KATSE(the Information System for Monitoring Land Use Planning) mainly contains statistical data on the state of planning as a whole and changes in it. GISALU is an important information source for KATSE. Both information systems form part of ALUTJ (the information systems for land use), and they are also subsystems of HERTTA (the Finnish Environmental Information System).

summary In 1995 Maver proposed seven deadly sins for CAAD as the prelude to a critical discussion on the principles, methods and practices of the field. In an attempt to return to this discussion, in this paper these sins are linked to the seven deadly sins and the complementary seven heavenly virtues. The analysis of computational processes into a theoretic, an algorithmic and an implementational framework provides a framework for the positioning of sins and possible or already attained virtues in CAAD.

summary Among the founding fathers of architectural computing, the late W.J. Mitchell was arguably the one who managed to capture the imagination of the younger generations through overviews and insights that described the backgrounds and scope of the area in a way that was suitable for novices as well as people outside the area. Calling such overviews successful popularization is only part of the truth. More importantly, they formulate a coherent and comprehensive approach that allowed Mitchell to move between eras and contexts without loosing focus or sacrificing fundamental priorities. It is an approach that remains valid and usable, a source of inspiration and understanding for future generations in the area.

summary The acoustic computational simulation presents many advantages but at the same time there are some limits corresponding, among others, to the modelisation of the hall geometry. The integrated modelers of geometry of the halls in the acoustic simulation software are based especially on the programming code modelisation via text editors of coordinate points and not on the graphical modelisation, as the CAD software is. In cases of complex architectural shapes of halls, the majority of the acoustic simulation software imperatively needs to import a model from a CAD software. However, the modelisation of the geometry of the hall must take into account several criteria in order to run in an acoustic simulation software, and optimize the calculation results, such as the plane surfaces, the limited number of surfaces in some cases, the elimination of the unnecessary elements, the accepted geometry model format, etc. This paper explains the description and the particularities of three different modelisation processes of the Architectural School Amphitheater of Bordeaux in a CAD system in order to be adequate for acoustic simulation via acoustic software, such as ASCII, dxf and normals orientation model formats. It also presents computer automatization aspects of these processes integrated in a plate-form adaptable to a CAD system named “CAD-Acoustic.” These modelisation processes can also be a helpful tool during the architectural conception of the acoustic hall.

summary This paper describes methods, processes and the outcome of the reconstruction in the medieval wooden settlement complex in Pultusk, Poland. It is the result of the interdisciplinary cooperation between architects from Warsaw University of Technology and archaeologists from Regional Museum of Pultusk. They have undertaken the research issues of information exchange and knowledge-building processes in the digital environment. Main issues were related to the methods of computer reconstruction in architectural and urban scale, which enable alternative narrative threads. To achieve this, parametric techniques were adopted and the 'Pultusk Recontructor' application was developed in Grasshopper. The interaction between architects and archaeologists over hypotheses and alternatives was supported in urban scale by 'Rapid Reconstruction Modular Model'. This 3D printed urban model, consist of segments which can be simultaneously exchanged. It became not only a substrate for scientific debate, but also may serve an education role for the permanent Museum exhibition.

summary This study focuses on spatial metaphors in digital interfaces that designers use in their modeling processes. When designers themselves perform an action by using a digital tool, they often make spatial inferences without realizing it, with the help of their mental models and established modeling experiences. In order to trace these implicit spatial metaphors, the spatial metaphors used by the designers were discussed through their verbal expressions. Within the scope of the pilot case study, the participants told each other the 3D models given to them verbally, and the other participant made the 3D model simultaneously with the narrative. The metaphors that the participant in the role of the narrator used with the intention of making a spatial description allowed the participant in the role of the modeler to build spatial relations. This study, which has the potential to provide a spatial framework for interfaces in the future, is a step toward designing new user interface metaphors.
