summary This paper describes an experience in a Graduate course Architecture and Urbanism that used computational tools to analyze urban quality – considering form, uses, density and spatial configuration (based on visual and fields) – in different urban areas in the city of João Pessoa. Understanding that the city is a problem in organized complexity, different aspects condition the quality of use of spaces and reveal urban dynamics. Urban analysis aided by computational tools revealed successful in characterizing different problems and potentialities that can lay the foundation for interventions with more urban quality.

summary This article presents the parametric design and modeling in BIM of curved walls for 3d-printed construction in concrete, seeking to manage the reduction of materials and construction execution times, and enhance its architectural expression. The process described here is structured in the following phases: (i) conceptual preliminary design exploration, defining formal parameters in Revit, (ii) parametric modeling with Dynamo and Revit, (iii) integration of structural validation and printing programming of the robotic arm, and examples of execution with 3D-printed construction.

The challenge of design is more than creating a three - dimensional digital (3D) model that includes all available information; visualization and communication throughout the entire process is crucial due to the global nature of contemporary architectural practice. This study asks: What tool would satisfy this need for communication? The objective of this paper is to explore these issues and propose an answer to this query based on flexible management to solve them.

summary The paper discusses a numerical modeling tool to evaluate thermal performance of building envelope according to Brazilian NBR15.220 and NBR 15.575 standards. Contemporary integrated design processes require the development of early design stage decision support mechanisms in order to optimize building performance. The development of the proposed tool focused on early stage decisions on building envelope design and integrating tool usability in the design process. Results indicate that the proposed tool provides basis for decision making that respond to Brazilian standards previously disregarded by participants. Also indicate improved understanding on parameters that affect building envelope thermal performance.

summary Contemporary architecture is considered a dynamic system, capable of adapting to different needs, from environmental to functional ones. The term 'Adaptable Architecture' describes an architecture from which specific components can be changed in relation to external stimuli. This change could be executed by the building system itself, transformed manually or it could be any other ability to be transformed by external forces (Leliveld et al.2017). Adaptability concept is therefore linked to motion and to recent advances in kinetic architecture. In our research we are studying the rules that we can use to design a kinetic architecture using origami. Parametric design allows us to digitally simulate the movement of origami structures, we are testing algorithmic modeling to generate doubly curvature surfaces starting from a designed surface and not from the process. Our main goal is to study the relationship between geometry, motion and shape. We are interested, in particular, in complex surface manufacture using origami technique to design a kinetic and reactive ceiling.

title Emergency immersive stimulation: an approach to educational artifacts.

summary The case study describes the effects of immersive stimulation and its factors that affect the attitude of students in pandemic times. The experiment used an educational plan and immersive artifacts with a situated approach. The case study used a survey, their reliability calculation had 9 items that were rated with a Likert scale. The experiment had 17 participants and two questions as axis. “How is your information about immersion?” was the first question, “Which factors affect the students’ attitude in an immersive space?” was the second question. Last question was a disaggregated survey with 3 variables. As a result of the research, there were an average of 9.3 in male participation with 12.5 years old; average of 4.5 in female participation with 12.3 years old. Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient was 0.969, as a positive influence of the immersive artifacts and a situated learning perspective.

title Design, construction and validation of an all-terrain wheelchair in magnesium alloys

summary Magnesium alloys have an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and can be manufactured with a lower environmental impact. Although its application is attractive for wheelchair design, it is little explored. As a result of this work, an all-terrain wheelchair was designed, exhibiting a weight reduction of 32% compared to commercial products. Users performed usability tests, to evaluate the improvements achieved. This wheelchair can contribute to improving their quality of life, allowing users to save energy and preserve the health of their upper limbs. Finally, an impact was achieved in the local industry, developing capacities to manufacture products in these alloys.

summary Keyframing, Morphing, Inverse Kinematics; they are all animation technics which have been explored by diverse groups of architects, academics and students, searching for new horizons in the proyecting process development, pushing forward the present limits of proyecting methodology. We define this project starting by the explorative use of animation tools as experimental variables in reformulating our design processes. Data input have been traditionally carried out using classic interfaces such as keyboard, mouse, graphics tablet, among others. Despite this is accepted by many as the standard way of communicating with machines, we think this is still very far from the ideal way to design and model new proposals. In this context we propose to investigate a new way to approach to the computed aided modelling process, questioning and reformulating traditional interfaces in user .machine communication.

summary In landscape design a vertical section is a representation that, comparatively, is less used than in architecture. However, given the current complexity of urban intervention, the section is a graphical tool of analytical and communicative interest to complement the information that plants give us. The paper is structured in three parts: the first presents the theoretical-conceptual framework of the research, in the second, some notable examples are studied, and in the third, a photomontage exercise is carried out in a course with students of landscaping.

summary This paper presents the results of the development of a graphic coding implementation system that was created to produce a series of diagrams integrated into a pre-existing digital guide platform (www.plexo.edu.uy). The aim of this coding system is ?among others? to present a selection of one hundred architectural projects from different parts of the world, so that it serves as a guide in an academic trip made by architecture students. The drawings were made by advanced students who were taking an undergraduate course.

summary Montevideo has a new visitor. In the heritage building of the german architect Karl Trambauer, located in the Old City, a new presence was installed filling the vacuum left by its former collapsed dome, seeking to restore a message, adding a new vision and recovering the lost dialogue between the architecture, the city and its inhabitants. This paper summarizes and explains the experience of the workshop Adaptation 2015, held on September 2015 at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Exposing the theoretical framework, design strategies, morphogenetic development, digital manufacturing experimentations, conclusions and open questions from the experience made. We will go through this temporary intervention on Trambauer’s building, being a rare but symbiotic object, with parametric genes, digital and handcrafted manufacture, and also looking for the impact of theory and academic practices in the city.

summary The object-oriented language TM is presented and its main features are discussed, such as attribute inheritance, extensibility, encapsulation, definition of public and private responses, and addition of responses. These features make TM attractive for expansion into a programming environment providing extensive DBMS capabilities. summary Learning in architecture has shifted from an individual focused approach to a larger system of interacting individuals in a situated, tool-mediated and socio-technical context. In addition to developing essential skills to work with diverse design software and taking part in collaborative design activities, learners also need to be equipped with competencies that will allow them to operate intelligently outside of situations of distributed cognitions. The challenge in present educational climate is to develop pedagogical approaches where situations of distributed cognition are not the ends themselves but are the means for improving mastery of solo competencies. The paper contributes to the current discussion about the need to re-orient architectural education and proposes a pedagogical framework for the development of a new web-based teaching/learning environment (socio-cognitive eco-system) as an integrated platform to support both autonomous and distributed learning.

summary This paper addresses a reflection on the cultural transformation caused by the advent of digital materials in the daily interaction of human beings and their impact on the construction of imaginaries. To do this, an approach to the notions of culture is sought from the conditions of material interaction and the generation of semiospheres, as well as the implications of the insertion of digital materiality into this dynamic. On the other hand, approaches are made to the consequences produced in the collective imaginaries of Medellín, Colombia, in terms of the transformation it has undergone over the past two decades, in the clear context of the advent of digital media and the consequent transformation they produce in collective narratives.
