title Experimental Immersive Practices in Teaching Sustainable Planning: Perspectives and Applications in an Academic Environment
source García Amen, F, Goni Fitipaldo, A L and Armagno Gentile, Á (eds.), Accelerated Landscapes - Proceedings of the XXVII International Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2023), Punta del Este, Maldonado, Uruguay, 29 November - 1 December 2023, pp. 181–192
summary Climate challenges faced by cities have their origins in water resources management. The built infrastructure ignores its ecological bases, altering ecosystems and the water cycle. Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) arise as viable alternatives to confront these problems. However, the inconsistent documentation about the systematization and functioning of NBS makes the professionals insecure about their use. New approaches using Virtual Reality (VR) facilitated the visualization and evaluation of the 3D model of a bioretention prototype. We used the headset Oculus Quest 2 and the notebook Predator Helios 300 for VR immersion. The model viewed was produced by the Archicad 26, Twinmotion, Rhinoceros 3D, and Gravity Sketch software. The experience showed that VR is effective for simulating propositive scenarios and as a learning tool in an academic environment, widening the comprehension and functioning of the subjects.

title Python on the Landscape of Programming Tools for Design and Architectural Education
source SIGraDi 2017 [Proceedings of the 21th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-227-439-5] Chile, Concepción 22 - 24 November 2017, pp.237-241
summary Currently most professional modeling and computer graphics software packages embed a scripting language. This is an early report on collecting data about software applications and coding tools geared towards the educational environment, preparing a listing for further evaluation and analysis of platforms. An increase in the adoption of Python as the embedded scripting syntax in many established tools can already be recognized, therefore the creation of educational materials on Python for design and architectural education merits further attention. Other insights on the educational potential of the available tools might be gained by advancing the data collection and evaluation work.

title Free-form Ceramic Vault System - Taking ceramic additive manufacturing to real scale
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2019.1.485
source Sousa, JP, Xavier, JP and Castro Henriques, G (eds.), Architecture in the Age of the 4th Industrial Revolution - Proceedings of the 37th eCAADe and 23rd SIGraDi Conference - Volume 1, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal, 11-13 September 2019, pp. 485-492
summary The use of Additive Manufacturing (AM) for the production of architectural components has more and more examples attesting the possibilities and the advantages of its application. At the same time we seen a fast grow of the usage of ceramic materials to produce fully customised architectural components using Layer Deposition Modelling (LDM) [1] techniques. However, the use of this material, as paste, leads to a series of constraints relative to its behaviour when in the viscous state, but also in the drying and firing stages. Thus, when ceramic dries, the retraction effects may be a barrier to the regular use of this material to build future architectural systems. In this sense, it is important to study the material behaviour and know how to control and use it as a primary construction material. To do that we present the challenges and outcomes of project Hexashade, a ceramic vault shading system prototype whose geometry and internal structure is defined according to the solar incidence. This paper explain how we expect to build a real scale self-supporting prototype.

source Stojakovic, V and Tepavcevic, B (eds.), Towards a new, configurable architecture - Proceedings of the 39th eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, University of Novi Sad, Novi Sad, Serbia, 8-10 September 2021, pp. 483-492
summary The manufacture of architectural components driven by digital design tools and Additive Manufacturing (AM) allows the achievement of highly evolved constructive systems, more integrated into a specific reality to which it is intended to respond, resulting in unique and adapted solutions with high geometric and material performances. Considering the application of these methods to common structural elements, namely beams and columns, for which there are already several examples demonstrating their feasibility, we find that it is necessary to provide a sound answer to an element that is fundamental for these proposals to function together as a single system - the moment of connection between beams and columns. In this sense, this paper proposes the design and test of a set of connections with adapted geometry between beams and columns, produced through ceramic Liquid Deposition Modelling (LDM), applying logics of topological optimization. This work foresees the development of a constructive system that incorporates reversible and irreversible connections, being formalised in a set of gantry structures formed by two vertical elements and a horizontal one, giving the comparative model between digital design and manufacture methods and the traditional ones.

summary Even with the difficulty of implementing NBS for EbA as a solution due to the inconsistent documentation of past experiences and heavy dependence on local, ecological and social conditions, would it be possible to implement NBS that incorporate the needs of each place? This paper shows the experience of the implementation of a NBS in an urban area, in the context of “Present City Project”, using parametric modeling to simulate outcomes during the planning process. The algorithm used inputs to develop a multi-criteria analysis capable of translating urban complexity. The result of this process is a comprehensive map identifying the most efficient locations for implementing GI based on the provided data and the streets suitable for interventions with NBS as well as their water absorption capacity. Throughout the process of submitting the "Present City Project," the algorithm played a pivotal role as an essential tool for raising public awareness.

summary This paper discusses the potential of using data from social media and location data platforms to create cartographies that enhance our understanding of urban dynamics. Natural Language Processing (NLP) and sentiment analysis are highlighted as essential tools for comprehending and categorizing this data. The study conducted a systematic review of NLP and sentiment analysis applications in urban studies, covering 27 peer-reviewed journals and conference papers published between 2018 and 2023. The research classified applications into six categories: urban livability, governance and management, user and landscape perception, land use and zoning, public health, and transportation and mobility. Most studies primarily relied on data from social media platforms like Twitter and location data sources such as Google Maps and Trip Advisor. Challenges include dealing with irrelevant or misleading information in publicly available data and limited accuracy when analyzing sentiments of non-English-speaking populations.

summary The instantaneous nature of globalized information has brought places closer together and homogenized space, eliminating regional differences. Contemporary urban architecture and the technical-scientific- informational quality of the human-made environment innovates the rationality of the dominant actors in society. The field of telecommunications has developed substantially in the last 30 years, and today we are participants in a digital era, that has not only shortened distances but revolutionized the concepts of time and space. Telematics is a fundamental element of cities at the end of the millennium and has become a new instrument of social control. Electronic vigilance systems, as an application of telematics, are now widely used in cities, and a new urban space is being configured based on this dynamic. This paper is an introductory essay on the topic, which is essential in the understanding of urban spatial dynamics, and its objective is to point out fields for future research.

summary This paper discusses the experience of the initial phase of introduction of the BIM paradigm in the undergraduate program in Architecture and Urbanism (evening course) of FAUFBA. We started from the premise that BIM should be adopted gradually and integrated with the various subjects of the course, and should be initiated through the disciplines of graphic representation. The proposal for this course is presented and practices are discussed, as they were experienced in the discipline of Computing and Design II, which deals with this paradigm. It was observed that BIM process requires significant changes, as it encountered some initial resistance from the students. However, this approach increases the understanding of building and facilitates the project documentation. Furthermore, the understanding of the scope of the paradigm was crucial to the effective use of the adopted tool.

summary In the recent decades, the high-resolution remote sensing, through 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry benefited historic buildings maintenance, conservation, and restoration works. However, the dense surface models (DSM) generated from the data capture have nonstructured features as lack of topology and semantic discretization. The process to create a semantically oriented 3D model from the DSM, using the of Building Information Model technology, is a possibility to integrate historical information about the life cycle of the building to maintain and improving architectural valued building stock to its functional level and safeguarding its outstanding historical value. Our approach relies on an ontology-based system to represent the knowledge related to the building. Our work outlines a model-driven approach based on the hybrid data acquisition, its post-processing, the identification of the building' main features for the parametric modeling, and the development of an ontological map integrated with the BIM model. The methodology proposed was applied to a large-scale industrial historical building, located in Brazil. The DSM were compared, providing a qualitative assessment of the proposed method.
